The Induction Lighting Company
Low Energy LightingCost and Carbon Savings, Payback, and Return on Investment The ILC have successfully implemented various low energy lighting systems that have significantly delivered energy cost and carbon savings for national companies both in the UK and main land Europe. A number of cost saving scenarios are presented here.

Question? You say that retro fitting Induction lighting has provided clients with significant energy costs savings – do you have any examples and how you have monitored the reduced energy and costs? Answer! All our customers have benefited from reduced energy costs which seem to be the initial quantifiable measure of success and the measure has been different with each customer. The cases below exemplify this. However, with induction, LED, T5 and LCD linear tubes, other inherent benefits also accrue which are more or less evident dependant on the operating work environment. For example;brighter non-flicker, non-strobing light in food processing and packaging, reduced maintenance costs in high warehousing (18 metres), good colour rendering in a security environment, instant-on using PIRs in busy 24 hour warehouse, and minimal heat generation in cold stores working down to -25 centigrade. NATIONAL FOOD PROCESSING FACTORY AND DISTRIBUTION CENTRE An early example of hugely significant energy costs savings was in a national food processing company warehouse which gave results far in excess of those budgeted. The Energy Reduction Figures A warehouse unit with a mix of 400W SON and Metal Halide high bays were replaced by an identical number of 200W Induction High bays. The actual power consumption over a 7 day period both prior to and post the installation were recorded using a power logger. A reduction in ‘true energy’ consumption was recorded and verified, being during a mid-week period from 796.5 Kwh to 306.8 Kwh and at the weekends down from 796.5 to 90.2Kwh for a 24hr period. A saving of 489.7Kwh per 24hr mid-week and 706.3Kw per 24hr period during weekend days. The power consumption has also gone from a constant load of approximately 33.18Kw per hour to a fluctuating load of 12.78Kw per hour due to motion and Lux detection. Energy Summary and Cost of Ownership The existing 400 Watt SON Lighting was drawing 321,443.76 Kwh per annum, and based on energy costs at a unit rate of £0.0744 + CLC £0.0047, this gave an annual charge of £25,426.20 and carbon emissions of 173.57 Tonnes of CO2 maintenance costs were budgeted at £17.00 per lamp per annum, a cost of £1513. A Total True Energy Cost of Ownership with existing 400W of £26,939.00 KERS Ltd T/A The ILC Vantage House, Rother Valley Way, Sheffield, S20 3RW

The new 200 Watt Induction Lighting is drawing 89,148.80Kwh per annum, and based on energy costs at a unit rate of £0.0744 + CLC £0.0047, this gives An annual charge of £7,051.67, and Carbon emissions of 48.14 Tonnes of CO2 With no maintenance costs supported by a 5 year warranty A Total True Energy Cost of Ownership with Induction 200W of £7,052.00 Pay Back and Return on Investment The energy saving of £19,887 per annum resulting in a payback period of 1.7 years. However, the project is approved under the Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme which reduces the payback period to only 1.3 years. Over the 5 year warranty period total energy costs savings are £99,435, and total carbon emission savings are 627 tonnes, which at CRC tax rates of £12 per tonne represent a saving of £7,525. A total saving, including maintenance costs, of £114,543 equivalent to a RoI over the 5 year period of 3.38. The Induction lamps have an expected lifetime of 80,000 ~ 100,000 hours giving a further 5 years lighting and financial benefits – a further £99,435 and 627 tonnes of carbon.

LARGEST EUROPEAN INDUCTION LIGHTING INSTALLATION DISTRIBUTION WAREHOUSE IN BELGIUM. An Induction lighting design and implementation project was completed in Belgium in November – December 2011 and is the largest induction lighting lit distribution hub in Europe.
The ILC- Project – European Distribution Centre
60,000 sq metres ; 850 200W Induction Luminaires at 11 metres; 135 Lux
The initial stages of the roll out was for a single warehouse with 850 200W induction luminaires to replace a mix of existing 400W SON and Metal Halide fittings. The customer’s electricity supply billing below is indicative of the immediate high energy cost savings. In October 2011 prior to the start of installation the average KWh consumption was 212,502 KWH. A partial install in November immediately reduced the consumption to 174,000KWH, and in December 2011 when only nearing completion this fell to a level of 157,787 KWH. An immediate energy saving of 25.7% in a part completed installation. The billing decreased proportionately and the drop in the whole bill (which relates to the whole enrgy supplied) is attributed to the lighting contribution.

The schematic below compares the monthly KWH draw over the years 2009, 2010, and 2011 and there is a clear reduction in consumption in November and December 2011 compared to previous years even though the installation had not been fully completed.
The introduction of Induction lighting to the warehouse has markedly improved the power factor and the read out below shows the improvement in the overall power factor but more importantly the huge benefits in L1 and L2.

NATIONAL GROUP OF 300 DISTRIBUTION and RETAIL OUTLETS An initial survey and trial was instigated for a national wholesale distribution chain with over 300 outlets in the UK alone. The trial was to compare the energy draw and light levels and uniformity of spread for A row of 5 x 150w Induction lighting, L1, A row of 3 x 400w Metal Halides, L2, and A row of 5 x 400w Metal Halides, L3. The tabulation below compares the energy draw in watts (W) for the three variants W L1 724.481812
W L2 1253.41357
W L3 1710.47266
As a direct comparison L1 with 5 x 150w is drawing circa 1000w less than the existing 5 x 400W metal halide units and provides brighter light and increased Lux levels at the working plane. The CRC energy costs savings calculator below identified the forecast savings for a simple 64 luminaire bay. Extrapolated over the national group annual savings in excess of ÂŁ2 million will accrue.
