Idaho Cabin Santa, ID Situated at a bend in the St. Maries river, a glass encloser allows for nature to bleed into the space. The shifting protrusions of the glass masses jet out to reach toward the views. The resulting overhangs provide for the necessary shade in summer, while inviting the suns warmth in the winter. A protective outer shell shields the harsh east and west light, while its shaping and perforations emphasize and invite views of the natural surroundings.

The journey from arrival to the site, to within the space, is meant to create intrigue. The user is weaved down the hillside to be encapsulated within. Upon entrance to the interior, the user is engulfed by the views created by the glass box.

Prefabricated Housing Displaced Locations Development of a system to be used as housing for families uprooted and displaced. Limiting the number and variations of the pieces to the whole, allow for a simple and clean variation of a home on stilts. In return, this reduces cost and construction time. Standard sizes of Structural Insulated Panels make up the walls, roof and floor that are then supported by steel frames and infilled with glass. A wet core is then inserted and optional partition walls for interior spaces.

SHELL Helix Pomatia Gastropods grow their shells by secreting calcium carbonate and trace materials in their surroundings as they grow. Transverse stria along the surface act as growth rings, and form each year with variations that register in diet, low pH in the soil, and other environmental conditions.
The physical shell was slowly eroded away to give sight into its internal structure and cavities. By recording this initial sectioning series, a digital replica could be reproduced for the continuation of this cycle. Through the use of the digital model, a series of sections gave way to diagrammatic representations of the results.

logarithmic spiral
The physical shell was cut down and referenced in order to overlay digital section lines.
Section lines were then applied to a logarithmic spiral.

While linear sections allowed for an understanding of the structure as a whole, the use of radial sections allowed for the unfolding of the shell into a historical timeline. The resultant gives insight into the growth of the shell over time along with a visual understanding of density and anomalies expressed.

EARTH CLOSET New York, NY In bathrooms, as in all architecture, membranes and apertures manage organic systems. As tiny urban objects, the envelopes of bathrooms regulate these organic systems as a finely tuned regiment of hygiene, privacy, maintenance and notions of propriety in public behavior.
concept diagram|site plan Above: A projected path of movement as the experimental bathroom leaves its trace. Below: The movement of the bathroom leaves a trail of nutrient rich fertilizer to be planted while rainwater is gathered for hand washing and plant watering.

One billion gallons of water are used each day to flush waste down the toilet in New York City. 6 cubic feet urine 1.5 cubic feet feces
earth closet
Set forth as an initiative to deal with the relentless amount of water used each day to flush waste to municipal treatment plants in New York City, a natural waterless cycle is substituted. In this rendition of the public restroom, waste is composted into nutrient rich soil. When the composting chamber reaches capacity and the contents has been processed, the toilet is towed forward. This forward movement expels the fertilizer and simultaneously tills it into the ground. Seeding can then take place followed by the progressive growth of plant life. This constant trail of remnants converted to life seeks to bring about awareness of the resources that as a society we flush away. Seen as not only a agricultural experiment, but also sociological as people are reminded of the resources inherent within human waste. Using heated aerobic digestion as a means for composting waste, affluent can be fully composted within a matter of two weeks with sustained temperatures. Research suggests that this method of decomposition is more effective at removing pharmaceuticals than a typical anaerobic system used for waste treatment.
7 2500 square feet fertilizer Properly handled the annual waste from one person can provide enough nutrients to fertilize a 50’ x 50’ garden.

URBAN OUTDOORS Seattle, WA The pacific northwest is a mecca for outdoor enthusiast who seek to reconnect with nature. Fueled by these agents, this complex seeks to bring the outdoors into the city. The need to meet the demands of these individuals within the city is enhanced by limited facilities for training and resources for which they seek. The integration of a training and resource center go about providing for these shortcomings and in turn create a new vibrancy within the neighborhood and sport.

Graphic Design Washington State University The design process for print material is much the same as any architectural design problem. Two-Dimensional media needs to display a message graphically, while providing a provocative interface to draw users in. The ordering of elements needs to provide depth and balance among the composition.
