Parking is Easy! If you’re coming downtown for the day, for a special event, or to enjoy the many shopping and dining opportunities, you don’t have to look far to find a place to park. There are currently 3,800 parking meters located in Spokane’s city center. To take advantage of pay-by-phone meter parking, download the QuickPay App, found in most smartphone app stores. Or take advantage of covered garages that allow you to keep your car snow free
in the winter. Participating downtown businesses can help you pay for parking by giving you an EasyPark validation whenever you make a minimum purchase. Validated EasyPark coupons are redeemable at downtown parking facilities displaying an EasyPark sign. And don’t forget about the many surface lots located within feet of your destination. Over 6,000 parking spaces are waiting for you for as little as $3 a day!

o Christmas story set in Spokane would be complete without including some common landmarks. So before you hop into a buggy for a charming carriage ride around downtown, charge your cell phone, grab a selfie stick and make your way to the GARBAGE GOAT and the antique LOOFF CARROUSEL in Riverfront Park. These family-friendly popular attractions are as fun to visit as they are unique. It’s only a short walk from there to the RIVER PARK SQUARE CHRISTMAS TREE in the mall’s magnificent atrium. bells on them, and kids love being able to hear that. The holiday lights are up around town, and usually some places are offering hot cocoa and candy canes. It’s just the epitome of a holiday experience.” To take in all of the magic of classic Spokane, you’ll have to explore beyond the carriage ride routes. Make a point of stopping by DODSON’S JEWELERS, which has specialized in fine jewelry and outstanding customer service since 1887. Their incredible selection of rare and exquisite jewelry for any occasion is complemented by an art gallery featuring original works by regional artists. Across the river at WONDERS OF THE WORLD, you’ll find natural works of art, along with an extensive range of exotic imports that have been hand-selected by the owners. Located in the historic Flour Mill, the store prides itself on its eclecticism: A huge aromatherapy section and a 50,000-year-old Pleistocene cave bear skeleton named “Annie” round out a full shop dedicated to beads and beading tools. Also in the Flour Mill is CLINKERDAGGER, which O’Doherty isn’t alone in calling “a Spokane favorite.” The restaurant has a particular flair for seafood and steaks that seem twice as delicious when enjoyed at one of the many tables overlooking the Spokane River. “It’s just one of those places you want to go during the holidays,” she says. “It’s so cozy inside.” Steaks and seafood are also on the menu at
so tall you might have trouble fitting it all in the frame! As Christmas Day approaches, it’s very likely that Santa will be there, too. He’ll be happy to pose for a photo and hear what’s on your list. Last, but certainly not least, there’s the historic lobby of the DAVENPORT HOTEL. Designed in the palatial Spanish Renaissance style, it’s almost magical to behold during the holidays — especially during the two-week Christmas Tree Elegance event (Nov. 29 to Dec. 11), when it’s encircled by nearly 20 themed and custom-decorated trees on the mezzanine level.

Not only does it offer a stylish setting in which to socialize and enjoy the lounge’s award-winning double martinis, the adjoining hotel lobby is always decked out in grand fashion for Christmas. “Visiting the Davenport is right up there with the carriage rides,” says O’Doherty. “The Peacock is such a great spot to visit after shopping to kick back and relax a little bit.” For a more intimate atmosphere that combines casual warmth with a sense of sophistication, try CHURCHILL’S BASEMENT LOUNGE in the lower level of Churchill’s Steakhouse. There’s live piano music seven days a week and a long list of fine wines, seasonal cocktails, imported beers, sought-after Scotch whiskies and single-barrel bourbons. Guests can order from the full dinner menu or a lighter bar menu. No classic Spokane tour would be complete without at least peering in the window of BRUTTLES GOURMET CANDY, home to the distinctive, hand-pulled, soft peanut-butter brittle that has been the shop’s signature recipe
for more than 60 years. They sell small, medium and large holiday candy samplers of their cashew brittle, caramels, white chocolate bark, old-fashioned brittle, and of course their famous soft brittle. To see Christmas sweets spring to life and dance before your very eyes, don’t miss TCHAIKOVSKY’S NUTCRACKER as performed by the Spokane Symphony and the State Street Ballet. Conducted by Morihiko Nakahara and featuring groups of local dancers along with lavish sets, a total of five evening and matinée performances of this holiday ballet will take place at the Fox between Dec. 1 and 4. “The story of the Nutcracker is one that a lot of us grew up with,” says O’Doherty. “To go and see it in person is just magical. It really puts you in the holiday spirit.”

ADVENTURE IN THE ARTS O
ne of the most exciting things about the holidays is the amount of special entertainment on offer — new and familiar, traditional and modern, for young and old alike. Few shows embody that breadth of appeal more than A CHARLIE BROWN

Holiday Guide 2016
CHRISTMAS, the beloved tale of a search for meaning and value in a season that can overlook them from time to time. “It’s a timeless, holiday classic — a wonderful story that touches on all that is good,” says Chris Taylor, who’s directing the

Academy production of the show at the Spokane Civic Theatre. “It reminds us that it doesn’t matter how much money you have, or how cool your Christmas tree looks. Poor Charlie Brown tries so hard to do what’s right, and at the end of the day he’s rewarded by the faith and generosity of his friends.” A Charlie Brown Christmas (Dec. 3-11) is just one of many arts events on offer this season. In fact, an arts adventure awaits in downtown Spokane — not least during the FIRST FRIDAY festivities on Dec. 2, when retailers and restaurants will host live music, small art exhibitions, special events, and other activities showcasing the region’s ex-
Charlie Brown Christmas isn’t the only live holiday entertainment you can experience downtown — or even at the Spokane Civic Theatre, for that matter. This season, the Civic is also running THE TRIAL OF EBENEZER SCROOGE, a lighthearted sequel to A Christmas Carol that sees Scrooge reverting to his old, miserly ways. He’s suing his deceased partner Jacob Marley along with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future for a series of alleged crimes that include kidnapping and emotional torment. But who knows? He just might get another object lesson in yuletide spirit. Over at the Bing Crosby Theater, you can catch IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE: A RADIO PLAY, which is like two shows in one: An old-fashioned radio adaptation of the heartwarming Frank Capra movie (pictured above) wrapped in a larger play about staging the radio show. ALL IS CALM, the poignant and bittersweet tale of the 1914 Christmas truce, is running at The Modern Theater throughout all of December. Now in its third year, this all-male a cappella retelling of the temporary cease-fire is fast becoming an Inland Northwest holiday tradition.

To cap off your brewery tour or evening at the theater, the GILDED UNICORN is the perfect pre- or post-show dining stop conveniently located in West Downtown. Its rustic wood, stone and brick interior is incredibly cozy during the winter months, and the menu of artisanal comfort food is as magical as the name suggests. Equally close is NUDO, which dishes up delicious variations on authentic ramen noodles amid a clean, minimalist setting enhanced by pop art á la Roy Lichtenstein. A variety of original works by more than 20 area artists are available at POTTERY PLACE PLUS. From large wall art to small decorative accents, from jewelry to fashion accessories, the range of exclusive arts and crafts on offer at this longtime artist-owned and -operated cooperative is sure to hold something for the special folks on your holiday shopping list. The same could be said of ATTICUS, which features recherché candles, stationery, clothing, candy, home décor and plenty more — much of it regionally sourced — alongside a broad selection
of gourmet tea and coffee that anyone would be glad to unwrap. When shopping for those who enjoy getting creative in the kitchen, be sure to drop in at the KITCHEN ENGINE in the Flour Mill. You’ll find premium cutlery, cookware and bakeware, as well as countertop appliances that will help everyone from skilled chefs to novices in their pursuit of culinary masterpieces. As has often been said, art imitates life. That could be why Chris Taylor says the spirit of A Charlie Brown Christmas is on display throughout downtown Spokane during the holiday season. “The Peanuts characters and Charlie Brown can speak to so many people in so many different ways. In the Spokane community, specifically around Christmastime, there is this great spirit of generosity and goodwill. You see it downtown in the decorations. You see people coming together. And generosity and goodwill is the theme of this show. So I think the microcosm of A Charlie Brown Christmas fits really well in the macrocosm of Spokane.”

Kathleen Lara inside her chic, French-inspired children’s boutique, French Toast.
- Chapter Three -
A FAMILY GETAWAY H
aving grown up in North Idaho, Kathleen Lara can remember the anticipation that came before a family trip to downtown Spokane — particularly during the holidays. “Coming to Spokane was always a big deal,” she says. “It was always special if we got to go downtown and see everything.”
14
Holiday Guide 2016
Today, Lara and her daughter Julia run FRENCH TOAST, a children’s gift boutique that plays a part in what’s helping to make downtown Spokane special for a new generation of families. “Most of our products are geared to ages 7 or 8 and under,” says Lara. “Some of the inspiration for this store was a line we carry
HOLIDAY GUIDE 2016 called Moulin Roty. It’s a French line with fun, unique toys — stuffed animals, games and baby gifts. We also carry a Spanish line called Mayoral. Those clothes are so unique that you’re not going to find them in any mainstream store, or anywhere else in Eastern Washington. We really go out of our way to find things that are different.” Throughout the entire winter season, there’s plenty more for families to shop, see and do downtown. THE ICE PALACE in Riverfront Park is a great place to start a weekend getaway, or simply a daylong outing. Here you can rent a pair of skates and take to the ice for free skating and curling lessons, as well as broomball. The Ice Palace is also happy to welcome large groups, including family reunions and holiday parties. When you’re finished and looking for a place to warm up, you can grab lunch at ROCKY ROCOCO, a favorite of Lara’s. “I love Rocky Rococo,” she says. “They have one pizza called the Rococo Chicago with Italian sausage and diced tomatoes. It’s the best deep-dish.” In the afternoon, head over to MOBIUS SCIENCE CENTER at its new location in the historic Washington Water Power building. The Bodies Human exhibition (recommended for ages 10+) runs until Dec. 31 and offers a fascinating under-the-skin glimpse into our skeletal, muscular, respiratory and circulatory systems. For younger children and squeamish adults, the museum has lots of permanent hands-on activities that make science accessible and fun. Next, how about some relaxed shopping at nearby URBAN OUTFITTERS? Along with the hottest trends in mainstream fashion, this brand-new addition to the vibrant downtown retail landscape also sells what’s all the rage in books, music, housewares and high-tech gadgets. Before dropping off all your holiday shopping at your hotel, be sure to reserve a dinner table at TORTILLA UNION in River Park Square. This restaurant, which opened in August, specializes in Southwestern fare prepared using high-quality, regionally sourced ingredients. The family-friendly menu features, among other things, many different types of enchiladas and a variety of tortas and tacos, including the popular barbacoa.
Provided you’re not too full, cap off the evening at WILD WALLS CLIMBING GYM. It’s open late (usually until 10 pm) and provides an opportunity for climbers of all ages and skill levels to scale new heights in a safe, supervised indoor environment. The following day, you’ll want to make a beeline to SPORT TOWN, a locally owned apparel and sporting goods store that has almost everything you of what Downtown could imagine Spokane has to offer! for the athletes DowntownSpokane.org and fans in your family: sunglasses, hair bands, running shoes, pennants, backpacks, stickers, specialized gear and so much more. Naturally, they’ve got a distinct emphasis on regional team apparel and accessories for Hawks, Cougars, Zags and Huskies. If your weakness is sweets rather than sports, you don’t need a holiday to justify a trip to SWEET FROSTINGS — but the time of year does mean that their selection of baked goods will be even more tantalizing than usual. In addition to perennial cupcake favorites like salted caramel and pumpkin spice, this from-scratch bakery makes Christmas cookies and holiday cakes that taste as amazing as they look. “Their store and the décor is beautiful,” says Lara.

You won’t be able to choose; it all looks yummy at Sweet Frostings. “They do such a nice job with presentation, and all of their packaging. event hosted by Derek Deis and Melissa Luck of KXLY, the public is invited to come out to Wall Street and sing traditional holiday carols — which, as fans of the movie Elf know, is the best way to spread Christmas cheer. “Downtown is great because we decorate for the holidays and try to make it as fun and festive as we can,” Lara adds. “There are lots of lights around the downtown area and so many fun places to shop and eat.”

Chef Chad White at his one-of-a-kind ceviche restaurant, Zona Blanca.
- Chapter Four -
ONLY DOWNTOWN D
owntown Spokane has an incredible variety of restaurants and retailers that you won’t find anywhere else in the city — if not throughout the entire region. Few people can appreciate that more than chef Chad White, owner of the trendsetting ceviche bar ZONA BLANCA. “There are no dedicated ceviche restaurants in either Seattle or Portland, so Zona Blanca is pretty much the first of its kind in the Pacific Northwest,” he says. “The layout of our restaurant is also unique in that it’s a collaborative venture, with essentially three separate businesses operating under one roof.

You walk in the door and immediately you’re in the Steel Barrel Taproom with 30 taps on the wall, and we have two brewers — soon to be three — brewing in-house at the brewery incubator. Then you walk to the back and see our ceviche spot.” What’s ceviche? It’s a Latin American dish that White says can be traced back to Peru. “Ceviche was developed for preservation. Catching fish, cleaning it and then soaking it in lime juice allowed them to hold their fish for a lot longer. Chefs later made it into a sexy form of an appetizer that’s now celebrated around the world. You can do a lot with it.

You can soak these fish in orange juice, lemon juice, lime juice or different vinegars. You can flavor them with different chiles. The combinations are endless, and are all so different. You just have to have the creativity to bring it to life.” As unique as ceviche is, White says that other downtown restaurants are also serving up impressive food in ways that are all their own. Take SANTÉ, for instance. “I feel like Santé is the premier special occasion restaurant,” White says. “If I was going to bring anybody into town during the holidays, that’s where I’d eat. The food is exceptional and the service is wonderful.” While not exclusive to Spokane, the new CARHARTT store has a distinctive character, thanks to its location in downtown’s historic Bennett Block.
