Local budtenders share advice for first-time consumers Trust Your Nose Royal’s Cannabis budtender Ben Neidigh suggests those new to marijuana take note of how strongly the flower smells, as that’s a good indication of the high the strain gives. “Terpenes are what give marijuana its smell and its flavor,” he says. “It’s also the catalyst that gets the THC into your bloodstream, so if you get a bud that smells really good and there’s a lot of smell to it, then you know it has enough of the terpenes to get all of the THC into your bloodstream, and you feel the full effect of that bud.”

Know Your Colors Orange labels indicate sativa strains, green labels indicate hybrid strains, and purple labels indicate indica strains. Green Nugget budtender Rachel Franzen says this labeling system is fairly standard throughout the industry.

Start Small Because new consumers have a lower threshold for THC, the ingredient in marijuana that gets consumers high, Franzen says an edible, which usually contains about 10 milligrams of THC, is the perfect starting place. But the “start small” suggestion still applies to those looking to smoke pot. Krogh says it’s easy for new smokers to become turned off from smoking after experiencing a strain with a high THC content. “It’s not the weed

that your parents and grandparents were smoking, where you could smoke a big ’ol joint and go function,” he cautions. “You’re not going to be able to function after a joint sometimes.”

Take it In, Let it Go Neidigh warns smokers who want to try dabs and concentrates against thinking like a smoker. “As bud smokers, we’re basically trained to take a hit and hold it in for a minute or two, then let it out,” he says. “You can’t do that with a concentrate; you’ll end up coughing for 20 minutes. I tell people who are going to move up to concentrates to take it in and let it go.” Franzen echoes Neidigh’s warning regarding concentrates. “[New consumers] should probably not buy concentrates or an oil-infused GREEN ZONE IN joint right off the bat,” she says. Cinder’s budtenders know as much about flowers and edibles as they do topicals and concentrates, and they’ll soon be able to work with medical users. Inlander readers in 2016; he shared his thoughts about the legal cannabis marketplace with Green Zone Are you excited for the medical merger?

What are the latest trends?

Oh, yeah. It’s a huge deal economically. Medical patients can purchase three times as much as a regular customer. Also, you get to help people. Before, if somebody asked me, “What can you do for my back pain today?” I couldn’t give them any help. But now [as of July 1, 2016], if they have a doctor’s recommendation, I can tell them what strains, edibles and topicals work for their pain.

Concentrates are becoming a larger part of the industry. We sell almost as many concentrates as we do flowers.

What questions do people ask most often?

What’s the best part of your job?

“What’s your highest THC?” The other question that we’re finally getting a lot more is, “What are you smoking? What are you using?” That’s the easiest way to give advice.

I connect with our customers, our producers and other retailers. When I was going to that class, we had to take a 100-question exam, and I got a 99 out of 100. When I was at Eastern [Washington University], I didn’t get any 99 out of 100s on any exams, but I also didn’t have that passion and that yearning to be better at it, learn more. My favorite part is waking up and coming to somewhere you know you belong. You can’t beat it.

So some customers don’t ask questions? A lot don’t think to ask. You can look up our menu online so they usually know what they want, and if they don’t, it’s because they don’t know what’s good.

Are “little old ladies” still coming in? Oh, yeah… I’ve learned to expect anything. There shouldn’t be a stereotype with stoners. If you want to enjoy a joint, that’s OK. It doesn’t make you a stoner.

Why do you think that is? It’s becoming more popular, more accessible. Prior to the retail industry, concentrates were really hard to come by. Now it’s really sterilized, it’s sanctioned and it’s the clean way to inhale.

What are your hopes for the future? I want to see it become legal everywhere. It seems like Washington has it figured out in terms of making laws, making money from it. I’d like to see other states jump on board. I’d like to see a healthier respect and acceptance for it. n

Maui The aptly titled tropical strain is said to be more head-heavy than other sativas, with an effect that builds slowly and lasts for more than two hours for some users. Golden Pineapple, Blue Dream (also popular at Royal’s Cannabis) and Maui are all top sellers at Lucky Leaf. Budtender Justin Fulton thinks that’s because the strains are all sativa-dominant. “People on this side of the state are really into the sativas more for the activeness,” he says. “People are looking for the heady, more creative [strains]. They want to get out and hike and do stuff, instead of sit in their house and do video games.”

AK-47 Hardcore name, mellow high. This mix of Colombian, Mexican, Thai and Afghani strains keeps users alert and engaged creatively and socially with its earthy smell and floral taste. It’s also a popular strain because of its through-the-roof THC content. This strain — as well as Primus, a potent strain that provides longlasting euphoria and can be used to help appetite loss and pain relief, and Northwest Cannabis Solutions’ Cherries Jubilee — is a big hit with Green Nugget customers.

Blue Suede Shoes The origins of this strain are unknown (some say it’s a cross between Afgoo and Heavy Duty, others think it’s OG Kush crossed with an unknown sativa), but its popularity among Cinder customers is proven. Budtender/supervisor Zack Krogh says the shop has a difficult time keeping it in stock, and has created a sign-up list so fans of the strain can be notified when the next shipment comes in. “We usually have at least 15 names between the last Blue Suede Shoes we sell and when it comes back in,” Krogh says. “It doesn’t stay on the shelf for more than a week.” n
