s we muddle through the gray, cold winter into a new year, one can’t help feeling hopeful for the bright days looming ahead. And sure, sometimes that hope is aided by a puff or nibble of our cannabis treats of choice, as well as the wintry celebrations that help make the slog toward spring bearable. Valentine’s Day is one of those celebrations, and Sarah Munds tells us how to make an ideal day of it for marijuanaloving couples (page 10). If you’re more of a Netflixand-chill type, rediscover some of the worst movies of 2018, suddenly made better with a little recreational enhancement (page 6). As you watch Venom or The Meg, consider one of the hottest trends of last year (page 4). Just think, in a few strategically celebrated weekends you’ll be ready to bust out the sunscreen and pack away your winter coats for another year. n

Eating the Market The hottest weed products in 2018? Candy, sodas and vape cartridges

T

BY WILSON CRISCIONE

here’s still plenty of bong-ripping, pipe-smoking and jointpassing going on in the world of weed. But the hottest trend in weed in 2018? Everything but actual bud. You don’t have to inhale a cloud of smoke and feel the burn in your lungs in order to get high. And the legal weed market has started to realize that. “One of the largest trends in 2018 was vape adoption and edibles,” says Robert McKinley, owner of Grow Op Farms in Spokane Valley. In states where weed is legal, FLOWER is still the top seller. But its dominance in the market is diminishing. Gummies, sodas and vape cartridges — ways to consume marijuana besides smoking — are becoming the new favorites for consumers. A report released in September by Arcview Market Research projects sales of cannabis concentrates to nearly match flower sales in the U.S by 2022.

It’s the hottest trend in weed these days. So we asked some local retail stores what the most popular products are. Weed-infused candies are flying off the shelves, says Erin Moore, assistant manager at Green Light in Spokane Valley. She says the “RINGS and BELTS” are favorites for customers. The “rings” are basically like Peach Rings, but infused with cannabis and coming in various flavors. The “belts” are like Fruit by the Foot, the classic strip of candy that every child under 12 has in their lunch box. Green Light also sells what they call “PEBBLES,” or hard candy. (The state almost banned pot-infused candies in 2018, but instead decided just to require the candies look more boring to not appeal to children.) In 2019, Moore expects VAPE CARTRIDGES to become more popular. Retail stores will continue selling an increasing array of products. Farmers will focus on their best-selling weed strains

more, instead of creating as many strains as possible. “I think more companies are focusing on quality over quantity,” she says. At Locals Canna House, the top-selling retail store in Spokane County, flower remains the most popular product, says customer service manager Reese Sarff. Still, Sarff says they’ve seen more people buy edibles, vape cartridges and an emerging new product: WEED SODAS. “Essentially [sodas] are still an edible,” Sarff says. They may act a little bit quicker, however, so they usually recommend to start small. Eric Skaar, regional manager of Sativa Sisters in Spokane, says he’s selling a lot of cannabis-infused BATH BOMBS. Drop it in the bathtub with you and get ready for the most relaxing bath of your life. “We’re seeing more and more of it all the time: creative, inventive new things, or putting a new spin on something that’s been around,” he says. Skaar guesses that people are starting to become more health-conscious with their weed consumption. People who are 45 and older are major consumers of recreational pot, and they’re wary about inhaling smoke if they don’t have to. “As consumers become more educated, they’re starting to get away from smoking flower,” Skaar says. “I think it’s going to continue in that direction. They’re going to want more sophisticated products.” n

FILM

Skyscraper

Highs & Lows We pick some truly baffling 2018 films that would work way better when you’re stoned BY NATHAN WEINBENDER

B

y now, you’ve probably seen a lot of film critics’ top 10 lists of the year, ranking cinematic masterpieces that you’ll probably put in your Netflix queue and never actually get around to watching. But amongst the least memorable of 2018’s movie crop were some strange, screwy and flat-out dumb pieces of work that could make for a great night high on the couch.

ACTION POINT

The Jackass crew made their return to feature filmmaking with the story of a real 1970s theme park with dangerous rides. Johnny Knoxville goes shooting off waterslides and gets catapulted into the side of a barn, and it’ll only be amusing if you’re a few tokes deep.

BAD SAMARITAN

David Tennant is woefully miscast as a

6 GREEN ZONE QUARTERLY WINTER 2019

serial killer who makes it his duty to ruin the life of a petty thief who discovers his secrets. Unintentional hilarity ensues, and the absurdity is ratcheted up to the point that Tennant is practically gnashing his teeth right into the camera.

FIFTY SHADES FREED

The trilogy comes to a merciful close, and its final chapter could only be enjoyed as the target of weed-induced snark. It’s defined by nonsensical storytelling, including a bizarre kidnapping plot detour that feels like it was taken from another movie and surgically grafted on to this one, and sex scenes with so little chemistry you’ll be shouting jokes out at the screen.

LIFE ITSELF

This wildly miscalculated melodrama from the creator of the hit NBC drama This Is Us is so bizarre, you might think you imagined it. From its misjudged narration

by Samuel L. Jackson to multiple instances of people being hit by buses to its terrible punk-rock cover of Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love,” this horrible, horrible movie has it all.

1325 N. DIVISION SPOKANE

THE MEG

A movie pitting Jason Statham against a prehistoric shark should have been a lot more fun and a lot wilder than it turned out to be. That’s why a little herbal assistance could make the enterprise much goofier, and a whole lot more fun.

MAKE APEX YOUR NEW YEAR SHOP

MOM & DAD

I genuinely liked this quick-and-dirty genre movie in which an unexplained airborne virus causes all parents to want to murder their children. But the reason it’s on this list: The dad of the title is played by Nicolas Cage, who’s going nuts before he’s even infected. A highlight has him destroying a pool table while he screams “The Hokey Pokey” for reasons that remain unexplained.

RAMPAGE & SKYSCRAPER

Dwayne Johnson made two ridiculous action films in 2018: Rampage, about a super-smart ape fighting other mutant monsters, and Skyscraper, in which the Rock tries to save his family from a burning high-rise. Both are pretty fun on their own, but they’d be ever more fun if you’re a bit impaired.

There are dozens of big-budget comic book movies, but few as strange as Venom. It felt like too much and not enough simultaneously, but Tom Hardy’s gonzo performance would be a lot of fun to watch if you were under the influence. n

EDIBLES

A Different Box of Chocolates These spiked salted caramel chocolates are easier than you think BY SAMANTHA WOHLFEIL

W

hether you want to get a little silly with your partner on Valentine’s Day, or you just enjoy chocolate, caramel and edibles, it’s a lot easier than you think to make professional-looking filled chocolates at home. Before you start, you’ll need a chocolate mold, available at baking and craft stores. While they come in a variety of solid and soft materials, we’d recommend a softer plastic or silicone mold so it’s easier to pop out the candies at the end. The mold used here was a more classic shape, but feel free to get a fun pattern for your adventure in chocolatiering.

SALTED CARAMEL CHOCOLATES 2 tablespoons weed-infused coconut oil 2 tablespoons butter 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup heavy cream 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon salt 16-ounce bag of semisweet chocolate chips

Melt the infused coconut oil and butter in a saucepan over medium heat. (You can make your own oil by simmering ground bud with coconut oil in a slow cooker on low overnight and then straining and storing it in the fridge or freezer). Add the brown sugar and stir until dissolved, then quickly add the vanilla and cream. Add the salt and stir constantly while the mix comes to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and keep stirring for about five minutes. Pour sauce into a heatproof container and cool on the counter for a few

minutes before fully cooling in the fridge. In a double boiler or heatproof glass bowl over a pot of simmering water, heat the bag of chocolate until just melted, stirring constantly and being careful not to overheat it. Fill each well in the mold to the top with the chocolate and let sit for about 10 seconds. Then tip the mold over the bowl of chocolate and tap out the excess, so each well is just coated, creating the outer shell. Scrape any extra chocolate off the mold and cool the chocolate in the fridge for a few minutes. Pipe cold caramel sauce into each of the cooled wells (you can make an easy piping bag by putting the caramel in a Ziploc and cutting the corner off), stopping about two-thirds of the way to the top. Then cover each well with more melted chocolate, scraping any extra off the mold so each piece is uniform and flat. Cool the whole thing completely in the fridge. Once fully chilled, pop the chocolates from the molds and enjoy! Store the extras in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer to enjoy as wanted, and as with all edible recipes, less is more until you know how potent your batch is. n

ONE SAMPLER SAYS... Without knowing the strength of these mystery chocolates, and having a fairly high tolerance when it comes to edibles, I wasn’t sure what to expect. So initially, I was delighted at how insanely delicious they were! Milky chocolate filled with some kind of light whipped caramel? My god. I’m the type of chap who would happily eat two or three 10mg Marmas-type candies and not get too stoned. I’ll normally start to feel those in the neighborhood of an hour or so. Perhaps the gelatin makes the Marmas digest faster, because after more than 2 hours, the chocolate and caramel had yet to have any discernible effect. However, 30 mins later… The journey began! The two mystery chocolates were a tremendously enjoyable experience, lasting a number of hours and having a very “smooth” experience; from getting higher and higher initially to eventually returning to the ground. They were slower to take effect, but also felt like they came on slower as well, rather than an immediate “kick in” of some other edibles. This could be a very desirable effect for some tentative users that are a little more apprehensive about trying the edible experience. Overall, I would rank this edible quite favorably in the crowded market of infused products. I’d happily eat it again any time, and would surely recommend it to friends. n

ROMANCE

High Style Great gifts for a weedfriendly Valentine’s Day BY SARAH MUNDS WEED LUBE

I’m going to not beat around the bush here. Yes, I did in fact try weed lube. It was a hoot and I’ll be using it again. When I say “hoot,” I really mean something more along the lines of “sex life changing in every way.” Weed lube is a bit of a misnomer. What’s you’re actually looking at is THCinfused sensual oil that works a lot like an edible for a variety of mucus membranes (wink wink). Like an edible, you apply this elixir of high heaven about 20-45 minutes before The Main Event. And ooh baby, it transforms The Main Event from “oh hey let’s roll around for a bit and then shake hands and be done” to “every nerve ending is alive and this O is clocking in at 9 minutes and it still hasn’t stopped.” Talk about a happy Valentine’s Day.

SATIN SHEETS + FREEZER

Don’t actually get your loved one a freezer. Get them a set of satin sheets and then put those bad boys in the freezer. Don’t be weird and just crumple them up next to the frozen pizzas; make sure your sheets are in some sort of bag or container. Bump the temperature up in your house to around 80. Then hang out for a bit, smoke a bowl, let your house warm up and let those sheets get frosty. One of the coolest sensations I have ever

experienced while under the influence was the aforementioned chilled, silky sheet and balmy house combination. I, too, thought my boyfriend was absolutely batshit when he returned from the freezer with sheets instead of something reasonable like ice cream or frozen corn dogs. But set aside the judgement and give this a shot. Plus, new sheets!

HIGH COUPLE’S MASSAGE

Get a nice body high going with your significant other, hop in an Uber, and lay down for a hot stone couples massage. Why hot stone? As we talked about above, the heat + cold thing feels absolutely transcendent with the right high. Except this heat + cold thing might sit a little better with you than shoving laundry in your fridge. Several personal tips for this date night. First, make sure to hydrate. I know, duh. When I went, I was a little too high to remember to drink enough water. Valentine’s Day is about getting down with your loved one, not getting down on the bathroom floor with nausea and an upset tum-tum. Save the munchies for after your massage, not beforehand. Again, nausea. Next, don’t get too high. I also made the mistake of smoking too much, then getting too relaxed, and sadly passing out for half of the massage.

10 GREEN ZONE QUARTERLY WINTER 2019

Also consider an in-home masseuse who can put up with your stoned asses versus trekking out to a fancy-pants spa. I would also recommend telling the masseuse that you’re here for a good high and good feels only; an intense, painful deep-tissue therapy session is probably not what you’re aiming for on the holiest of V-Days.

CHOCOLATE EDIBLE DESSERT TRANSFORMATION

Chocolate edibles are a pretty derivative choice for a Valentine’s Day present. But wait! Elevate yourself a level above the common plebes who only get their loved ones chocolates this year. Prepare a tasting menu of weed chocolate items transformed into a tasty desserts. Flaunt your cooking skills! • Example 1: Junk marshmallow bon bon, but turned into a smore, and paired with hot chocolate • Example 2: Wyld peach white chocolate, but crumbled up and served over peach sorbet • Example 3: Leif Goods chocolate bar, but melted and drizzled over strawberries Very obviously, please make sure to dose yourself accordingly. Avoid the “well, just one more won’t hurt” phenomena by making additional non-medicated snacks to munch on alongside your weed-infused ones. n

What’s Brewing? A guide to utilizing your leftover cannabis BY TUCK CLARRY

T

he most common and easiest option for those looking to use up leftover cannabis — say, stems or leftover “shake,” parts of flower that have broken off buds — is to make some infused tea. This sort of herbal tea is commonplace throughout the world as a natural alleviant for nausea and chronic aches and pain. By orally dosing, people can see immediate relief. I would highly recommend it as an evening relaxer after a stressful day or as a mood elevator during the weekend. For a quick batch, about half a cup of stems is recommended, and an additional bit of shake or available weed if you’re looking to have a more noticeable high. I would recommend about a quarter of a gram or so at most, due to full-potency weed being a hell of a long-lasting high. You’ll also want a bag of your preferred tea as well to have a base flavor for the stems and shake to blend with. The mix will need something to bind, too, so you’ll need to choose between a half cup of milk, half-and-half or coconut milk, or half a tablespoon of butter or coconut

Kevin Oliver of NORML YOUNG KWAK PHOTO

High Governance What cannabis-related legislative action to watch for going into the new year in Washington (and Idaho, sort of)

W

WASHINGTON

IDAHO

BY JOSH KELETY

hen it comes to new cannabis related-policy that may come out of the upcoming 2019 legislative sessions in Idaho and Washington, the Evergreen State stands in the limelight. The state has been operating a regulated marijuana industry since it was legalized by a 2012 voter-approved ballot initiative, and it’s going pretty well. (Idaho, in contrast, hasn’t legalized marijuana in any capacity.) And while tracking state politics may seem daunting, don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s what you need to know about potential new reefer regulation in 2019. It’s going to a busy year in Olympia for weed policy, according to players in the cannabis industry. “There will be a lot of bills,” says Chris Marr, a former member of the Washington state Liquor and Cannabis Board who has since become an industry lobbyist. “Marijuana is a complex issue.” As has largely been the case since marijuana was legalized across the state in 2012, the upcoming deliberations in Olympia regarding marijuana will be about tweaking and perfecting the existing regulatory framework, not making drastic changes that

it’s really going to do is allow for consolidation.” From their corner, cannabis consumers and their advocates — such as NORML — will likely be pushing another bill to allow people to grow plants in their homes, which is currently illegal. (A home-grow bill was introduced last year but didn’t make it out of the House.) “I believe there will be a home-grow bill this year,” Oliver says. Another consumer-related issue may come from medical marijuana advocates regarding taxes. Currently, qualifying medical marijuana patients are exempted from sales taxes under the language of I-502 (the legalization initiative). However, they are still subjected to the excise taxes levied by the state Liquor and Cannabis Board. Marr says advocates may push for a bill exempting patients from this tax. There may be some industry and consumer overlap on the issue of allowing marijuana to be sold outside of retail stores, whether it be on-site tasting rooms or direct farm-to-consumer sales. (Currently, only licensed retail vendors can sell cannabis to consumers.) Oliver says: “The tasting rooms are the No. 1 place where consumer and industry interests intersect.”

would blow up the system. For instance, the Washington CannaBusiness Association (WACA) — a group of marijuana processors, producers, and retailers that Marr describes as the “800-pound gorilla industry organization” — will be pushing to open up the local market to outof-state investment. (Currently, investment in licensed marijuana businesses has been limited to Washington residents.) “The out-of-state ownership issue will be big,” Marr says. Aaron Pickus, a spokesperson for WACA, tells the Inlander that allowing outside investment will give smaller enterprises access to a larger pool of capital when they are desperate for cash. He adds that Washington is the “only state” with legal weed that doesn’t allow out-of-state industry investment. However, Kevin Oliver, the co-founder of Washington’s Finest Cannabis in Spokane and executive director of the Washington chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), is more skeptical of the policy, arguing that it could allow for corporate monopolization. “There is kind a power grab going on [in the industry] right now,” he says. “What

It may seem like cannabis legalization efforts are perpetually doomed in the conservative state. Several attempts to put ballot initiatives legalizing medical marijuana before Idaho voters — the most recent of which was last spring, when backers of a medical marijuana initiative pulled it due to a lack of funding and organizational capacity to gather signatures — have already failed. Meanwhile, past attempts by pro-reform state legislators have similarly sputtered. “As of now, unfortunately, [Idaho is] still looking like it’s the most behind in the country while it’s surrounded by states that have medical marijuana for adult use,” Karen O’Keefe, director of state policies at the D.C.-based Marijuana Policy Project think tank. However, given the wave of marijuana reforms passed in other conservative states such as Arkansas, North Dakota and Oklahoma, O’Keefe isn’t writing off the possibility of a successful Idaho ballot initiative in the near future. (Incoming Idaho Gov. Brad Little has also indicated that he supports legal possession of CBD, a marijuana extract, despite his opposition to legalizing marijuana in full.) “I know our initiatives department has our eye on the possibility of Idaho in 2020 regarding medical marijuana,” she says. n

rittany Friedlander doesn’t hold back when you talk to her. She’s forward and opinionated. But as a budtender at the Greenhand, she’s also in the industry to help people, she says. Since last October, she’s been a budtender at the North Monroe pot shop. She was nice enough to let us grill her about her job, her favorite products and what’s in store for 2019. GZQ: How did you start working as a budtender? FRIEDLANDER: I started [at the Greenhand] a little over a year ago. I came out of bartending and serving and I wanted to switch it up a bit.

What’s the biggest difference between bartending and budtending? I have a great personality for [bartending], but with this, there’s a lot of people that I’m actually helping. I’ve helped people get off opiates, which is a huge deal for me. … We’re really rooted in this community. What are you looking forward to in 2019? The thing I’m most excited for in 2019 is to see where they go with education and research into THCB. ... THCB is an appetite suppressant and it’s known to give you an energy boost. It helps regulate blood sugars for people who are diabetic. I’m a single mom, I’m always busy, I always have 150,000 things to do and I cannot smoke and chill. I smoke and go go go. How many kids do you have? Two daughters. So that’s even more important: I’m a single woman raising women in this f---ed up world. I’m not raising princesses, I’m raising warriors. They come first. pretty blunt and honest. So this is pretty much the only job I can do. What are your favorite products right now? My favorite farm, hands down, is GLW. They do 100 percent clean pesticide-free weed. I’ve made multiple trips to the farm. They just grow weed right. ... They brew in terpenes into their soil so their bud has such a good, clean, strong terpene flavor. Their Black Jesus OG is my hands-down favorite weed of all time. Do you have any favorite devices? I’m a huge fan of the Airo Pro [Vape Pen]. It’s very sleek, it’s very easily hidden. Is there anything about your job that you look forward to every day? We are really lucky right here at our store. We’re a mom-and-pop shop. The women especially that I work with, we’re really tight-knit. We really care about each other. Any parting words of wisdom? I just want to say, don’t be assholes. n
