BUILDING A SMART CITY
Hoopfest is fortunate to have a great partner in PTERA, which has modernized our site-wide sound system and Wi-Fi network. No matter where you are at Hoopfest, you get to enjoy the magic of Hoopfest through music. Together, we look to create a Hoopfest Smart City to deliver even more data benefits.
RIVERFRONT PARK CHANGES FOR 2017
W
ith the construction in Riverfront Park, the Hoopfest site will look different this year. We’re excited about the changes, but need to ensure that all Hoopfesters are aware of them, so they can fully enjoy the tournament. A number of Hoopfest elements will remain inside the park, but in new locations. Several Hoopfest elements will move out of the park.
IN THE PARK: Ten Capital Team Check-In will be located in the U.S. Pavilion. Foodfest presented by Food Services of America will be in the Central Meadow. Family Fun Zone presented by Northwest Orthopaedic Specialists will be located in the Clocktower Meadow.
THE ART OF HOOPS
Hoopfest posters always involve a local celebrity, and this year is no different with local artist and designer Chris Bovey (vintageprint. us). The Hoopfest 2017 Poster sponsored by Lee & Hayes draws inspiration from Michael Jordan’s iconic “Wings” poster and features the downtown Spokane skyline, including the Parkade, the Paulsen Center, the Washington Street Bridge and the Davenport Grand Hotel. Pick yours up at the Hoopfest Team Store presented by Nike.
4 SPOKANE HOOPFEST 2017
The Avista Master Scoreboard and Numerica’s Photoboxx activation will be located in the Red Wagon Meadow.
Enter at the south end of the Post Street Bridge, across from the old Washington Water Power building, follow the path east.
Other merchandise vendors and activities will be in Riverfront Park as well; the park will remain the main thoroughfare from downtown to Spokane Arena-area courts, and vice versa.
Access from the north, on Howard and Mallon, through the park entrance.
GETTING INTO THE PARK: With much of the south side of Riverfront Park fenced off, below are the access points to the Central Meadow, the Clocktower Meadow and the Pavilion: Enter the Red Wagon Meadow, then follow the path to the left, and cross the bridge to the Clock Tower.
NO LONGER IN THE PARK: Nike Center Court, Toyota Shootoff, Hoopfest Store and the main Visit Spokane Information Tent all will move to the Bennett Block parking lot (adjacent to Stevens, between Spokane Falls Blvd. and Main). The main Hoopfest First Aid Station presented by Providence Health Care will be at the corner of Washington Street and Spokane Falls Blvd. Elite Courts will be located on Stevens Street, adjacent to Nike Center Court.

8 SPOKANE HOOPFEST 2017
I
f you live in Spokane, you might think of Hoopfest as a single weekend that brings a couple hundred thousand people to town and enables you to declare that you live in a place that’s home to the largest 3on3 basketball tournament on Planet Earth. In reality, though, Hoopfest is much, much bigger than that in our community. Sure, the organization began as a 3on3 tournament, but it’s since grown to become a force for good that exists throughout the calendar year. The Spokane Hoopfest Association has built and maintained basketball courts around the region, and is also one of the driving forces behind youth basketball on many different levels in the Inland Northwest. For Hoopfest, the gradual expansion of the organization has come organically, but also has a purpose. The organization often uses the term Hoopfest365 (#Hoopfest365 on social media, of course) to reference the ways the Hoopfest spirit and mission extend throughout the year. “Spokane Hoopfest has helped to build the identity and culture of Basketball City, USA,” says Bailee Neyland, Hoopfest’s director of brand strategy and business development, “with not only our iconic tournament weekend that places Spokane on the world’s map, but with our various efforts to give back to the community throughout the year. “It’s our motto that Hoopfesters live day
in and day out, from our team in the office, to our players, to our volunteers, to our sponsors and partners. Hoopfest365 is simply a means that allows us to share what it truly means to be Hoopfest,” she adds. Many might not know Hoopfest has been running the SPOKANE AAU YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUE for 15 years now and is also the force behind the IGNITE BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION, a collaborative effort with Spokane Public Schools that brings workshops and practice sessions to urban areas in Spokane. Ignite also aims to teach life skills to its young members and instill a sense of community. The organization, which has donated about $1.7 million to local charities over the years, has also built — so far — 32 courts throughout the region, many of which feature the Hoopfest logo on their backboards. You may not have even realized how deeply involved in the community Hoopfest has become, but Executive Director Matt Santangelo and his team have been working to change that. “We want the Hoopfesters and the community at large to have a greater awareness of our organization, beyond Hoopfest week,” Santangelo says. “We push to improve and add new elements to all of our programs each and every year so our storytelling becomes more important, so that the community can take full advantage of all of our offerings.”

OLD DOGS This year’s Hoopfest ALUMNI GAME is amping up the state’s biggest basketball rivalry
L Eric McClellan
ast year, Hoopfest figured it could add yet another facet to its already busy weekend of basketball with its first-ever ALUMNI GAME. What began as a kernel of an idea from the mind of former Zag Jeremy Pargo became a reality at the Spokane Convention Center on the Friday night before Hoopfest play began. Organizers weren’t quite sure what to expect from the event, but they got an answer quickly. The game sold out. Fast. “We were so excited by the turnout. It’s such a great draw. We had 41 alumni just for that game,” says Bailee Neyland, Hoopfest’s director of brand strategy and business development, of the inaugural game, all of the proceeds from which benefited Hoopfest charities. “It’s also a dual benefit. It’s a fun way to highlight our community, and why not, during the Best Basketball Weekend on Earth, have another great event?” With Zag Nation as pumped up as ever following Gonzaga’s run to the NCAA championship game, of course Hoopfest would do another ALUMNI GAME. But this year there’s a wrinkle, and it’s a big one. Former Zags are going to match up against alums of the University of Washington.

DREAM MATCHUP
Hoopfest’s second annual ALUMNI GAME on Friday night, June 23, is scheduled to feature these notable former collegians:
TEAM GU
J.P. Batista Gary Bell Matt Bouldin Ira Brown Dan Dickau Kyle Dranginis Micah Downs Steven Gray Mike Hart Erroll Knight Eric McClellan Jeremy Pargo Robert Sacre
! $ $$ ! &$&!
TEAM UW
Justin Dentmon Malik Dime Abdul Gaddy Mike Jensen Bobby Jones Deon Luton Venoy Overton Tre Simmons Robert Upshaw Donald Watts * rosters subject to change
In addition to THE ALUMNI GAME, your ticket gets you into FANFEST at Hoopfest, brought to you by Washington Trust Bank, Fanfest runs throughout the night with fun activities and contests for all ages. HOPFEST at Hoopfest is your official “Fifth Quarter headquarters, and will have local craft beer dispensers showing off their brews. Both events start when Spokane Convention Center doors open at 5 pm.
That’s right, the rivalry between the two-in state foes that went cold for a decade, but was revived last season (or in 2015, if you count the Zags’ victory in the Bahamas), is now extending beyond the current rosters. Hoopfest Executive Director Matt Santangelo says that Pargo helped lead the charge to make the ALUMNI GAME a UW-GU showdown. For Pargo, that rivalry is quite real, as the guard was at Gonzaga during the hottest years of that annual contest. Pargo is set to captain the Gonzaga team, which features a formidable lineup, including Eric McClellan, Ira Brown, Erroll Knight, Mike Hart, J.P. Batista and Micah Downs. The Huskies squad also looks tough, with Justin Dentmon, Mike Jensen, Bobby Jones, Robert Upshaw, Malik Dime, Abdul Gaddy and Tre Malik Dime Simmons among those set to lace ’em up here. Those who attended last year’s ALUMNI GAME know that the event features a real basketball contest and is hardly just a novelty. There’s hustle. There’s dunks. There’s even some defense. “I want to keep the ALUMNI GAME competitive and avoid the pitfalls of an ‘All-Star’ game or pure exhibition, says Santangelo. “The game is intended to be fun, but also high-quality, so we renew an old heated rivalry when we bring the alums from these two schools together. Hoopfest’s 2nd Annual ALUMNI GAME is Friday, June 23, at the Spokane Convention Center. Doors open at 5 pm; Tip-Off is at 7 pm. Tickets are $20 at ticketswest.com.

NIGHTLIFE
AFTER HOURS Where to celebrate your wins and forget your losses
A
s tens of thousands of ballers descend on downtown Spokane’s streets for Hoopfest, they bring with them reunions of far-flung friends or annual foes, and a couple of drinks may be needed to either celebrate victories or get over losses. We’re here to help.
BEER LOVERS’ LOCALES
The Spokane craft beer scene is exploding, and several purveyors of fine suds are within walking distance of the Hoopfest action. IRON GOAT BREWING CO. just celebrated their fifth birthday at the new tasting room they moved into last year. They’re one of the anchors of a thriving beer scene on the west end of downtown that features taprooms for RIVER CITY BREWING, ORLISON BREWING, the new WHISTLE PUNK BREWING and the STEEL BARREL TAPROOM, home to several small brewers, including founders LITTLE SPOKANE BREWING and YOUNG BUCK BREWING. On the east end of downtown, the venerable NO-LI BREWHOUSE boasts a prime riverfront patio to go

with their array of award-winning beers. (In the same complex, for a break from all the beer, you’ll find DRY FLY DISTILLERY’s chic new tasting room.) BLACK LABEL BREWING in the Saranac Building has a nice selection. A little north of downtown, BELLWETHER on North Monroe specializes in historic beers not typically found among the IPAs and sours favored in these parts.
ENTERTAIN YOURSELF
It stands to reason that you might want to take your mind off basketball over the weekend, and there are plenty of opportunities. Hit NORTHERN QUEST RESORT & CASINO in Airway Heights and see if your luck at the tables is better than your luck from the 3-point line. For lower stakes fun, hit GAMERS ARCADE BAR, where you can sip a drink over pinball, Donkey Kong or even practice on the Pop-A-Shot.
If you’re not too tired to dance, or at least nod along to some live music, mull a visit to the BARTLETT, where Flagstaff folk-rockers Tow’rs headline on June 24. Also that night, the BIG DIPPER hosts a raucous punk show featuring Coffin Break, Big Yuck Mouth and Fun Ladies. Perhaps comedy is more your speed after hooping it up. Wander over to the SPOKANE COMEDY CLUB, where comedian Jubal Flagg of KCDA-FM’s Brooke & Jubal morning show headlines on June 24.
LAST CALL
After all the socializing and camaraderie, a final drink with your teammates might be in order. A few options: HOGWASH WHISKEY DEN in the basement of the Washington Cracker Co. Building, DURKIN’S LIQUOR BAR and GARAGELAND all serve up some fine cocktails. Or drop by MOOTSY’S for a tall can of something cold.

KEEPING WATCH Volunteers make Hoopfest go, with Court Monitors and Marshals on the front lines
A
lot of numbers get tossed around when we start talking about Hoopfest, and most of them are impressive. We know about the 225,000 folks who roll into Spokane to either play on or watch one of the 6,000 teams playing on 422 courts throughout the city’s downtown core. But another number is perhaps even more eye-opening: Hoopfest makes use of more than 3,000 volunteers in order to pull off the Best Basketball Weekend on Earth. “The women and men who share their time and talent with us in such a significant way; it’s overwhelming at One of last year’s Hoopfest Court Monitors; all together, they’ll cover 422 courts this year. times, and all of us involved Monitors are also tasked with intervening should the game get a with the organization are so grateful,” says Executive Director Matt Santangelo. “There are countless cities that have 3on3 little heated, which happens from time to time. tournaments, but there is only one Hoopfest, and that is because “Sometimes people are a little unruly. Play KIND!
INVOLVED INLANDERS love to get out and do stuff. They love checking out a new sushi place, or volunteering for a great cause. And they, for sure, love Hoopfest — cheering their lungs out or sweating their way through game after game, all glorious weekend.
We love that stuff, too — and we fill the INLANDER with it every week. Pick yours up every Thursday, and you won’t miss a thing.
HOOPFEST RULES FOULS
In most brackets, the participating players will call their own fouls. All called fouls shall result in one free throw shot, except on successful field goals, in which case the basket counts and no free throw shot is awarded. Players fouled behind the two-point arc, while in the act of shooting, shall be awarded two free throws. A player fouled behind the two-point arc, not in the act of shooting, shall be awarded one free throw. A technical foul will be called for unsportsmanlike acts such as taunting, baiting, trash talk or stalling, and will be called on players and their fans. In extreme cases, the player may also be suspended from play and a coach or fan removed from the court for the remainder of that game or for the rest of the tournament. Only Court Monitors can call technical, intentional or flagrant fouls.
LENGTH OF GAME
The first team to reach 20 points within 25 minutes of play is declared the winner. At the conclusion of 25 minutes the team with the lead shall be declared the winner, regardless of the margin. Only if the teams are tied will an overtime session be played. In overtime, the first team to score a total of two points shall be declared the winner. (There are exceptions for Elite and Youth brackets.) No game shall go beyond 20 points.
GAME TIMES
All printed schedules are effective through only the first game for all teams. Following the tournament’s first game, each team is required to check the Avista Master Scoreboard for all game information. Teams must be ready to begin play at their scheduled start time. Teams not at their court for their scheduled game are given a 5-minute grace period before a forfeit is enforced. For the full Hoopfest Rules, visit SpokaneHoopfest.net.
