for Life
ne crazy idea launched an event that grew to be the Best Basketball Weekend on Earth. Every June since 1990, thousands of teams, tens of thousands of players and over 100,000 fans descend upon the downtown streets of Spokane for Hoopfest, the world’s largest 3on3 basketball tournament. The sights and sounds are unmistakable as over 14,000 games are played over the two-day tournament. But the basketball is only the beginning. The culture is what drives us, but the connection within our community is what makes us. From players to volunteers to sponsors, we all play our role to ensure the tradition continues as we strive for greater heights. Rise with us… for the Game… for that Hoopfest Life… for the Culture. Let’s make #Hoopfest2018 the best ever!

Zag alums like Sam Dower are members of the TBT team Few Good Men playing for $2 million in prize money.
Spokane Hoopfest TBT Pod Perhaps the greatest new addition to the weekend of hoops is the decision by The Basketball Tournament (TBT) to host one of its regional pods at Hoopfest. And as if it couldn’t get better, the pod hosts the Gonzaga alumni team Few Good Men. Spectators will get to see not only former NBA players but local heroes to boot. The team contains sharpshooters Drew Barham and Matt Bouldin, stud Steven Gray and former standout big men Casey Calvary and Sam Dower. Wazzu favorite Davonte Lacy and Eastern Eagle and former Brooklyn Net Jacob Wiley round out the team. As if the fun needed to be amped up anymore, the pod also hosts the rival St. Mary’s alumni team Gael Force as well as the Air Force alumni Bomb Squad and the Utah alumni Team Utah. The games will be held on Friday and Saturday at the Lewis and Clark High School gym and streamed on ESPN3. Tickets are available on the Hoopfest website. See page 14. FIBA 3X3 Division If you thought the Elite games have been fun, wait until you see the latest event added to the Hoopfest itinerary. A freshly minted Summer Olympic sport, the FIBA 3x3 is a high-octane battle as teams go at it for short 10 minute game bursts. A 12-second shot clock makes every decision count on both offense and defense. The event’s games will be held in between Elite bracket games at Nike Elite Center Court. See page 16. Elite Games As fun as watching your friends back down the unfortunate soul that decides to guard them down low, the level of basketball played on Nike Elite Center Court is something to behold. The Elite games host teams of great ballers who played at some of the highest levels of the game. When you’re free and you snagged something to eat or drink, head over to Center Court and check out the highest level of 3on3 the weekend has to offer.
OR IT COULD BE YOU, STAYING HOME, CLIMBING THE WALLS. Beginning June 29, kids can play at Northern Quest, too! Kids Quest is a new hourly childcare and entertainment center for children 12 and under, while Cyber Quest offers an all-ages interactive arcade experience the whole family can enjoy. And it’s all in a safe, friendly environment so your kids can enjoy themselves, and you can give yourself a time out for once.

Kevin Durant blew people’s minds last year. And for this year? You won’t wanna miss it!
STAY TUNED
You Never Know... At Hoopfest, everything is possible
S
ome secrets are simply too good to be kept. Kevin Durant? In Spokane? For Hoopfest? The rumors couldn’t be true, right? But, then, out of nowhere, Durant was there at the Nike Elite Center Court, fresh off of winning his first NBA championship and the Finals MVP award. All eyes turned to KD, in all his 6-foot-9 glory. Chants of “M-V-P!” were shouted from the stands. Everyone took out their phones to get a picture as he pushed past a swarm trying to get close to him. Social media accounts blew up with pics of KD. “Spokane shut the city down for the game I love,” Durant tweeted. “Hoopfest was on another level.” Eventually he went on the court and answered some questions about why he came to Spokane, and his time in Washington state when he was a member of the Seattle SuperSonics. “This is kind of where I got started, and then going to Seattle was one of the best years of my life,” he said. “I’m always going to be a part of the whole state of Washington and Seattle as well, so it feels good to be here today.” Everyone cheered when the Q&A period was over, and Durant was loving it. Then he played 3-on-3 with some lucky kids.
Goes to show you one simple fact: You never know what might happen at Hoopfest. Or who might show up. The rumor mill is already cranking out new theories. Who’s coming this year? And Nike didn’t just help bring Durant to Spokane, they also decided to unveil his KD10s at Hoopfest a week before they were available on the shoe company’s website. Sneakerheads gawked as Durant donned his gray and black 10s as he walked down Spokane Falls Boulevard. Durant’s visit in 2017 wasn’t the first by an NBA superstar. NBA legend and all-time leading scorer Kareem Abdul-Jabar turned out for Hoopfest’s 20th anniversary in 2009. Still, Durant’s surprise appearance showcased the energy and love of the game that the Hoopfest community prides itself on. And the weekend is a celebration of that affection. “Without the game, we wouldn’t be here,” Durant said during the Q&A. “It’s always about the game. We’re all going to come and go, but the game is forever.” This year, make sure you don’t miss out on any of the action. Following Hoopfest’s social media accounts is the best way to stay up to date on the exciting events and spontaneous happenings going on all weekend!

ou can help memorialize your epic basketball weekend by picking up some of the sweet swag found at the Hoopfest Store presented by Nike. Grab a shirt, shorts or some new sneakers to commemorate the Best Basketball Weekend on Earth. In collaboration with the event, Nike will have a line of exclusive balls that showcase Spokane and the 3on3 extravaganza. Grab a ball early, because they always sell out. You won’t be able to find this gear anywhere else. Now with a second pop-up shop by the North courts, near the Spokane Arena just off Washington on Dean, you’re able to grab
limited-run items regardless of where your bracket lands you. And the commemorative official basketball highlights the essence of street hoops with a heritage design and graffiti detail. Due to Nike’s involvement with the largest 3on3 tournament on Planet Earth, Hoopfest goers have been lucky enough to have the first opportunity to score some of the latest Nike releases in previous years. Last year’s celebration of all things basketball gave sneakerheads not only the opportunity to see Kevin Durant but also be the first to score his KD10s. Be sure to check out the Hoopfest Stores to find out what special offers Nike will be offering this year.
LOCAL COLLABS
In collaboration with local retailers, Hoopfest is offering shopping opportunities to buy local. Hoopfest has teamed with Terrain, The Great PNW and Jewelry Design Center to offer unique experiences for the weekend. Terrain will offer one-of-a-kind arts and crafts that combine culture with the great game of basketball. The Great PNW will offer Hoopfesters the opportunity to rep their region with special Northwest merchandise. And Jewelry Design Center, with Hoopfest, will be giving special dog-tag pendants only to Elite winners.

GRUDGE MATCH
Familiar Fac es This year’s big weekend features the Hoopfest TBT Pod and a two-day street party
H
oopfest has always been our basketball tournament, but now it’s part of The Basketball Tournament. The Basketball Tournament, or TBT as it’s commonly known, is a 72-team, winner-take-all tournament with $2 million on the line. Now in its fifth summer, TBT has become a hotbed for former NBA and collegiate players looking for some good competition with a shot at big money. Anyone can enter TBT, but their team must qualify in order to take part. Of the 72 participating teams in this year’s event, 36 qualified through fan support on social media, 16 were at-large qualifiers chosen by TBT, 16 more bought their
way into the event, and the remaining four slots were awarded to last year’s regional champions. Unlike Hoopfest’s 3on3, streetball style, TBT is a 5on5, indoor tournament more akin to traditional basketball. “The partnership with TBT brings a one-of-a-kind event to Hoopfest 2018 and beyond,” explains Matt Santangelo, Executive Director of Spokane Hoopfest. “We are excited to showcase the intensity of an eliminationstyle tournament with some of the greatest basketball players in world. It’s a great match. Hoopfest will love TBT, and TBT will love Hoopfest.” On Friday, June 29, and Saturday, June 30, Spokane’s Lewis and Clark High
One of the Few Good Men, Gonzaga alum Steven Gray, is shooting for $2 million in prize money.

7 pm on Friday, June 29
STREET PARTY!
Outside of TBT games, there’ll be a party in the streets both days. Fourth Avenue, in front of Lewis and Clark High School, will be shut down to traffic and opened up to the people for a street festival. Live music, good food and a beer garden will keep fans entertained in between the action. And you don’t have to miss a minute of TBT action while hanging out in the street — all three games will be streamed live on a screen outside of the gym. Admission to the street festival is $5 for the general public, or free if you purchase a ticket to that day’s TBT games.
WEST REGION
FEW GOOD MEN 6 SEED
TEAM UTAH 11 SEED
7:30 pm on Saturday, June 30
5 pm on Friday, June 29
GAEL FORCE School will host four teams of former collegiate players from around the West. One of those teams, Few Good Men, will be made up of some familiar faces. Named after Gonzaga University Head Coach Mark Few, Few Good Men is a team comprised largely of former Zags. The team has advanced to the Super 16 in two of the previous four TBTs. Standing in their way this time, though, are Team Utah, a team of former Utah Utes and players from other Utah schools, Air Force Bomb Squad, made up of former Air Force Falcons, and one team likely to draw the ire of local fans: Gael Force, full of Saint Mary’s players. The Spokane connections run deep in TBT’s Hoopfest pod. Team Utah’s Dakarai Tucker played on the Utes team that was eliminated in the second round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament by Gonzaga. And while Air Force Bomb Squad might not bring the on-court rivalry of Team Utah or Gael
Force, they should feel at home in Spokane because of the city’s proximity and deep ties to Fairchild Air Force Base. The depth of connection that these teams and the game of basketball has with the city of Spokane make Hoopfest and TBT a perfect partnership. Hoopfest’s streetball approach celebrates the accessibility and universality of basketball, while TBT’s more-regulated style helps showcase just how high talented players can take their game. Bring those two events together in Spokane, and it’s easy to make the case that this really is Basketball City, USA. Tickets for the event are $25 on Friday, which includes both games, and $20 on Saturday. Doors open at 3 pm Friday and 5 pm Saturday. Games will be broadcast on ESPN3. For tickets and more information, visit SpokaneHoopfest.net.

16 SPOKANE HOOPFEST 2018
T
he rest of the world is about to find out what Hoopfest fans have known for the past few decades: 3on3 basketball is pretty cool. FIBA, basketball’s international governing body, and the International Olympic Committee worked together to make 3on3 basketball into an Olympic sport. Hoopfest is bringing a FIBA 3x3 bracket to Nike Elite Center Court this year, giving fans in Spokane an early look at the game set to take the world by storm during the 2020 Olympics. FIBA-sanctioned 3x3 basketball is a little different than the 3on3 that will be played all over downtown Spokane over the weekend. The bracket will follow FIBA 3x3 rules rather than the traditional Hoopfest rules. Players must bring the ball back only as far as the three point line after a change of possession, and there is a 12-second shot clock that encourages a high-octane style of play. The first team to 21 points wins, and games are limited to just 10 minutes. Participating teams will be made up of FIBAsanctioned players. Which means, there will be
some high-level international players taking part in the event, like those on Team Canada. While 3x3 is just now making its way into the Olympics, the game has a long history of international competition with connections to Spokane’s basketball scene. Former Gonzaga Bulldog Ira Brown represented the United States in the 2012 FIBA 3x3 World Championships in Greece. Brown spent two years at Gonzaga, during which he wowed fans with his penchant for highlight-reel dunks. Dunks, which are not allowed in Hoopfest (except at Nike Elite Center Court), are very much a part of the FIBA 3x3 game. While fans will be rewarded with good basketball and, hopefully, a lot of dunks, the players in the FIBA 3x3 bracket are seeking a reward of their own. A $5,000 pot is on the line, with $4,000 going to the champion and $1,000 going to the runner-up. The champion of the bracket will also qualify for another FIBA-sanctioned 3x3 event taking place later this year in Canada. Catch all of the FIBA 3x3 action at Nike Elite Center Court where, who knows, maybe you’ll be watching a future Olympian.
CHANGING THE GAME TOGETHER Spokane and the University of Washington make a great team, which is why we’re proud to continue our sponsorship of Hoopfest. Good luck to this year’s teams!

2018 OFFICIAL EVENT GUIDE 17
HOOPFEST RULES FOULS
In most brackets, the participating players will call their own fouls. All called fouls shall result in one free throw shot, except on successful field goals, in which case the basket counts and no free throw shot is awarded. Players fouled behind the two-point arc, while in the act of shooting, shall be awarded two free throws. A player fouled behind the two-point arc, not in the act of shooting, shall be awarded one free throw. A technical foul will be called for unsportsmanlike acts such as taunting, baiting, trash talk or stalling, and will be called on players and their fans. In extreme cases, the player may also be suspended from play and a coach or fan removed from the court for the remainder of that game or for the rest of the tournament. Only Court Monitors can call technical, intentional or flagrant fouls. Fans love the teams showing the best sportsmanship.
RULES OF THE ROAD
Play Like a Winner Rule No. 1: Be a good sport
S
ure, everybody likes to win. But Hoopfest is about more than just winning. It’s about coming together to have fun playing basketball. The best way to ensure that is through playing kind and showing good sportsmanship. In Hoopfest it’s largely up to the players to police themselves on the court.
