THE MENU

I

t can be hard to keep up with all the new restaurants and culinary trends that have arrived in the Inland Northwest over the past few years. It may seem like

your friends, co-workers and family members are constantly asking, “Have you tried ____ yet?” We’re truly experiencing a major culinary resurgence, and everyone’s taking notice. Whether you’re looking to spend an evening sampling your way down a craft cocktail menu or tasting as many items as you can off of a fresh menu, bursting with flavor, at one of the region’s growing list of chef-owned restaurants, the options to do so abound. The only downside of all this culinary creativity, really, is simply deciding where to go.

De Leon Foods

Mayra and Sergio De Leon

Mexican inspired, made in house

W

hen Sergio and Mayra De Leon moved to Spokane more than 20 years ago, they noticed something strange: Although there were lots of Mexican restaurants, most of them were drawing inspiration from the same region of Mexico: Jalisco. “Our style is a little bit more northern Mexico, south Texas,” says Sergio De Leon. Beyond regional differences, it was important to the De Leons to use quality ingredients. “Everything we do, we do in house,” says De Leon. “Everything is fresh.”

Although they knew a restaurant would be important, the De Leons didn’t stop there. De Leon Foods now features a tortilla factory (which makes both flour and corn tortillas), bakery and grocery store (including a butcher shop). “When you go to any regular grocery store, you’re going to find maybe 8 feet of Mexican products,” says De Leon. “Here you’ll find aisles of different ingredients and pots and pans.” Experience De Leon Foods in the original location on Francis, as well as in Spo-

kane Valley at Sprague and Sullivan. The different flair has paid off. “This is where workers from other Mexican restaurants come and eat, because they feel like they’re home,” says De Leon. While the goal is to offer a little something for everyone (come for breakfast, lunch, or dinner daily, or get an event of any size catered), De Leon Foods is proud to provide unique experiences you can’t find anywhere else. Once a year, they buy half a truckload of Hatch peppers (from New Mexico), previously hard to find in Spokane, and roast them in their parking lot. “People come from all over to get them,” says De Leon. “They look forward to them all year.” What’s next for De Leon foods? According to De Leon, a few small taco shops. We can hardly wait.

1898 Bar

Creative cuisine, spectacular setting, now open to everyone

I

t’s been about a year since 1898 Public House, located in the Kalispel Golf and Country Club, emerged onto the Spokane restaurant scene (to the delight of residents of north Spokane). The menu is truly impossible to classify, with offerings like escargot, lobster corn dogs, wild Alaskan halibut and smoked brisket French dip sandwiches. “It’s a very creative menu with lots of exciting dishes, all made from scratch,” says Chef Tyler Allen Schwenk, who worked at the Coeur d’Alene Resort for 23 years, most recently as head chef at Beverly’s, before coming to 1898. “I’m

kind of just recreating some classics using the freshest ingredients.” For much of its first year, 1898 was a wellkept secret. “People haven’t really known that this place has been open to the public, because it was private for so many years,” says Schwenk. The secret became harder to keep with a double win for best entrée and the People’s Choice award for lobster mac and cheese at Epicurean Delight. Now, it’s

best to make a reservation. You can check out 1898 every day for happy hour (with half-price appetizers and $4 craft beer, wine, and basic well-drink options) and dinner, and plated brunch on the weekends (including build-your-own mimosa and Bloody Mary bars, featuring 12 different types of fruit purées to pair with sparkling wine, and a variety of salts, pickled vegetables, house-cured bacon and hot sauces from Schwenk’s recent Belize trip to dress up your vodka). Even though some of the favorites stay the same, Schwenk is always looking to liven things up with a quarterly seasonal menu, specials and promotions. You never know what culinary adventures might come your way at 1898.
