buy good things from good people Why shopping at the corner store, not a big box, is better for you and your community

Grow Our Community Study after study shows that local businesses produce more income, jobs and taxes for local communities than multinational conglomerates. That means more resources for parks, libraries, schools, police and roads.

school

Contribute To Character Your favorite boutique, bookstore or bakery — every one-of-a-kind business in the Inland Northwest — helps to make our community unique and distinctive.

Pay It Forward Know that your money does more good, when you shop at local businesses. Non-profit organizations receive an average of 250% more support from small business owners than they do from large businesses.

Put Your Neighbors to Work Small local businesses are the single largest employer nationally, and in our community.

Support a Dream

my business

For many small business owners, their local shop is the culmination of a lifelong dream. And when you shop at their store, you’re not only supporting that dream, you’re supporting their family. Think Local. Live Local. Shop Local

5

why spending locally shopping local helps your community go further Studies show shopping at a locally owned store generates almost four times as much money in our local community than shopping at a chain.

$

local

national

$

That’s because local shop owners are more likely to use other local companies and services, like local banks and accountants. When local companies re-spend within our community, that means more jobs, a stronger economy and better funding for roads, police and schools.

good businesses good people NICOLE & ERIC FRICKLE • CO-OWNERS THE KITCHEN ENGINE What they sell:

Kitchen gadgets, cookware, appliances, specialty spices, olive oils, coffee and tea.

Offers a local alternative to:

Williams-Sonoma, Sur la Table, Macy’s and Kohl’s

Number of employees: 9 Years in business: 8 Eric’s favorite local shops:

Indaba coffee, Boo Radley’s and Atticus

Local charities of choice: Why he shops local:

Christ Kitchen, Second Harvest Foods and Meals on Wheels

“We try to shop as local as possible. I think it’s cool when you can come into a local business, and support other local businesses and their families with one purchase. You can come in here, buy local coffee, and support two local businesses at one time.”

CHI WALTERS (L) CO-OWNER TANGERINE • CO-OWNER ONE GOOD THREAD AMY DRISCOLL (R) CO-OWNER TANGERINE What it’s like to be sisters and business partners: “I wish we saw each other more,” says Chi. “I’m so busy with One Good Thread and Amy is the face of Tangerine.”

One Good Thread’s style: Upscale, designer children’s wear

Tangerine’s look:

“We like very romantic, feminine clothes. We both love natural colors,” explains Chi. “ We are the Tangerine woman. We’re professional women and moms. We love our families but don’t want to look frumpy.”

How One Good Thread got its start:

“We started out selling one piece from one designer. We didn’t take any loans, so we took what little money we had and grew the business from there,” explains Chi. Since then, the online retailer has grown 100 to 400 percent each year, with visitors from 103 countries. Chi and her husband Trevor also opened their first brick and mortar store in Coeur d’Alene in 2014.

What Inspired Chi and Amy to own their own businesses:

“Our grandfather (Ed Peters) lived the American dream. He was an orphan and was basically on the streets when he was pretty young. Then he married my grandmother and started his own business. He was the pioneer of flooring in Spokane, founding Northwest Floor Covering.”

Why shop local: “When people support us, they are supporting families. We do this for the betterment of our family.”

good businesses good people JEFF RUNGE • MANAGER RUNGE FURNITURE What he sells:

Furniture, home furnishings and accent pieces, appliances, lighting, carpet and flooring.

Years in business:

Runge opened in 1946. Jeff is the third generation of Runges to work at the Coeur d’Alene shop.

Number of employees: 15 Offers a local alternative to:

Pottery Barn, Macy’s, Sears, Home Depot, Lowes

Why Jeff says shopping local impacts the whole community: “Anytime you shop local, you’re directly helping the community. Local independent stores like Runge are much more helpful with local events, schools and charities. We support 4-H, Coeur d’Alene Parks and Rec, the Festivals of Trees. We are Viking boosters. Right now we have a canned food drive going on in the store. Every weekend in the summer, you’ll find rummage sales and car washes in our parking lot.”

VICTORIA ZVONCHECK-FERRO • OWNER AUDREY’S BOUTIQUE What she sells:

Women’s clothing, jewelry, purses, lingerie and foundation wear.

Retail pedigree:

Worked as a buyer and an executive for Lord & Taylor and Marshalls. Previously owned a bridal salon in New Jersey.

Known as: The Bra Whisperer. Victoria is meticulous about finding the right fit for any woman and is one of the few certified mastectomy fitters in Spokane.

Claim to fame: Designed the highest-selling bra ever auctioned off ($6,100!) to benefit Beyond Pink.
