Three Fashion Trends to Watch PONCHOS

T

o wear a coat, or not to wear a coat? No fashion question causes greater angst on chilly mornings than this one. With warmth and comfort ranking high on the list of priorities, so, too, is the desire to look effortlessly put together, rather than awkwardly bundled up. Thankfully, the poncho — the answer to the above question — is still trending strong this year. Paired with skinny pants and an array of footwear, it instantly offers a balanced visual line, effortless style and warmth for cool days.

BOOTS

T

he boot is a fashion trend that Will. Not. Die. (Thankfully!) Tall boots, ankle boots, shooties (shoe/boot hybrids) and every height in between remain absolute must-haves this season. One warning though: Not every outfit is improved by

shoving pant legs into tall boots, so don’t commit boot abuse. It is essential to match the right boot style for the right look. Tall boots go with skinny pants, ankle boots with tights and flowy pant legs.

FUR AND VELVET

W

armth, luxury and richness abound in fall and winter fashion, and that means fur and velvet are on-trend this season. While real fur remains out of the question for many — whether financially or ethically — faux fur is quite wearable. Think, “fink,” aka, faux mink. Because fur and velvet are such powerful pieces, they work well when worn as accents, or one-of-a-kind items, rather than head to toe. Consider a vest, duster, belt or hat.

Inspir ed Giving MOMS

T

here are two schools of thought when it comes to gifts for moms: gifts that involve their kids, and gifts that don’t. A professional photo of the entire family, capturing this season of life will be cherished by her, guaranteed, and is a gift that lasts for years. Sometimes, though, you have to toss sentiments out the window and go with what every momma wants: to be pampered. Spa treatments and a day of relaxation are just her size.

KIDS

M

ost kids’ toy boxes and rooms are overflowing with gadgets, toys and things that get used once, but never again. Rather than contributing to the overpopulation of their toy boxes, tap into kids’ imaginations, activate their endless

energy levels or open their eyes to something new with a class or experience. Learning to rock climb, taking a pottery class or going on a cross-country ski outing are experiences that will light a spark in children’s minds, and make a lasting impression.

SPORTS FANS

W

hile some sports fans paint their faces and chests their favorite team colors, others are open to celebrating sports in less extreme manners. Ticket packages to our local teams will have your sports fan exploring a variety of new sports and players. As an added bonus to that variety, and lower cost than professional teams, minor league games usually have built-in entertainment that is family friendly. Your sports fan might just paint themselves with new colors.

Home Furnishings VINTAGE & MODERN

What’s Hot at Home GLAM BE GONE

R

emember the show Dynasty, with all the glitz and glamour? Well, file that style away under “history.” Glamor and luxury are out, when it comes to home decor, replaced with a push for urban and repurposed styles. According to local realtor, Laurie L. Ross, “People aren’t necessarily going for granite anymore. Now, they are drawn to quartz, concrete and products that are more urban. It’s more boho chic than glamour.” Simpler trends, with natural woods and understated looks are creating a new kind of dynasty.

CHALK PAINT

“W

hat is old is new again,” is a concept we are used to hearing, but what about “What is new is now… old?” One of the newest trends in home decor is to transform new pieces to look older. Consider it the home decor version of buying worn, frayed jeans. A coat of chalk paint, with its “velvety,

ultra matte finish,” and a finishing wax, placed over modern furniture, quickly gives it an antiqued, vintage look without the years of use needed to get there. Now, what is new looks old, making it the newest trend.

BRASS IS BACK

A

fter dominating the 1980s and early ’90s, brass was banned. Shunned by interior designers and homeowners alike for several years now, the once shiny and mildly tacky metal is back in an updated way. The “new” brass has shaken off some of its shine, and with that, the tacky factor. Replaced with a gentle matte finish, the new brass is best used in moderation, as an accent piece.

What’s Cooking UGLY FOOD

D

o you want your food to look good, or to taste good? Not that the two are mutually exclusive, but it’s an increasingly known fact that sometimes the uglier food, the better the food. Consider the big, bright red, plump tomato that you buy at the grocery store, only to slice it open and find it white, mushy and flavorless. Compare that to the oddly shaped tomato coming from your garden. Small and misshapen, it tastes like candy. If you prefer flavor over looks, join the ranks of the ugly food followers — those who believe there is nutrition and value in foods that may not be picture perfect. Jumping on board this trend is a beautiful thing.

ZOODLES

I

f you want to be on trend in the kitchen, there better be a spiralizer in your arsenal of cooking gadgets because that is how you are going to whip up a plate of Zoodles. Zoodles are today what calamari, brussel sprouts and kale have been in the past; the

food trend of which people can’t get enough. Zoodles are zucchinis spiralized into the shape of spaghetti noodles, and good golly, they actually taste like pasta! Which means carbing out just became vegging out.

BOXED MEALS

I

s there culinary hope for those who can’t cook, don’t have time to shop and never think beyond the five staple dishes they learned in college? There is, and it comes in a box. All aboard the meal delivery train, which everyone is riding. With portioned ingredients, step-by-step picture directions, and out of the box recipe ideas, delivered directly to your door, now, everyone can be a gourmet cook, if they think inside the box.
