THE HISTORIC DAVENPORT HOTEL AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION
Why let the out-of-town guests have all the fun?
Maybe you need a staycation with style in downtown Spokane — in a guest room where Amelia Earhart, Clark Gable or Babe Ruth might’ve stayed. Maybe you want to live the Gatsby dream with classic cocktails by the fireside in a perfectly restored century-old lobby. Perhaps you desire a perfect massage, an impeccable night’s sleep all year long, or just a small bite of something truly sweet. However you want to treat yourself, the Historic Davenport Hotel awaits. A source of civic pride that opened in 1914 — and narrowly escaped demolition around the turn of the 21st century — it has been meticulously restored to its original splendor. For locals with a soft spot for grand early-20th-century architecture or Spokane history, a visit to the Davenport is a frequent pilgrimage — if only to walk through the lobby gawking at the ornate detail, or to meet a friend
for drinks at the Peacock Lounge. But for many, the experience is about taking more time to indulge in a little slice of that award-winning Davenport experience. Why let the out-of-town guests have all the fun? “The Historic Davenport creates an atmosphere that is truly about treating yourself in every way,” says Matt Jensen, the Davenport’s marketing director. “And in that category, an experience like the Ultimate Spa Day package is second to none.”
S
Jensen goes on to describe the package, and it actually relaxes you just hearing about it. First, the two-hour Body Ritual includes a cleansing scrub, hydrating body wrap, Moroccan oil hair and scalp treatment, a cleansing shower, and a full-body 60-minute massage. Then, a cutting-edge facial is followed by a visit to the aromatherapy steam room, serenity relaxation
BET YOU DIDN’ T KNOW • State of the Art, Then and Now: In 1914, it was the first hotel in the U.S. with air conditioning. Today, it’s LEED-certified Gold, a prestigious green building rating for energy efficiency.

including a variety of products guests enjoy during their stay. The most popular, of course, is the famous Davenport bed. If you slept great, why not treat yourself by asking the hotel to ship one to your home? They even deduct the price of your overnight stay!
Signature soft peanut brittle, freshly made onsite. lounge, and a delicious room-service lunch. Of course, a full-service mani-pedi rounds out the experience. You get the feeling the words “treat yourself” will be redefined forever for anyone who visits for their Ultimate Spa Day. In the Davenport Home Store, we grab a sample of the signature soft peanut brittle, which is freshly made onsite. Jensen describes how Davenport Confections can be traced all the way back to the hotel’s early beginnings. The busy shop sells the latest styles in home goods and furnishings,
Reflecting on what the Historic Davenport means to the community, Jensen turns to the most wonderful time of year. “During Christmas Tree Elegance, it’s unlike any other place to get in the holiday spirit,” he says. “We love seeing families who include the Davenport in their annual traditions. It’s wonderful!”

Our greenhouses are ever-changing with seasonal plants.
As a third-generation locally owned and operated entity, Liberty Park Florist and Greenhouse has a rich history in growing plants. “I grew up in this business and love to grow things,” says owner Jim Alice. Jim’s grandfather, an Italian immigrant, began a new life in Spokane doing odd jobs, including stints at a few greenhouses. He bought a house in today’s Perry District and began growing and selling tomatoes. Soon, he added flowers, and the floral shop naturally developed. Today, Jim and his wife, Kellee, continue to bring vegetables, flowers and other plants grown right in their greenhouses to the greater Spokane community. They even grow their own poinsettias for the holiday season. “You can’t get more local than that,” Jim says.
There have been some upgrades since Jim’s grandfather sold his first tomato in 1928. About eight years ago, the business purchased a section of greenhouses at the corner of 29th and Glenrose. During the busy spring season, these houses are full to the brim with vegetable starts and ready-to-bloom flowers. Jim also pulled down the original glass greenhouses and built new ones with wide paths. “You can now push your cart down the rows,” says Jim, “and actually shop in the greenhouse where stuff is grown.” Liberty Park also grows succulents, carries Florida-grown potted foliage for homes and offices, and crafts flower arrangements for every occasion and event. Jim’s staff is seasoned and knowledgeable, ready to answer questions and help your garden grow!

HENDERSON DIP CHRIS GREENE
How a secret family recipe became an Inland Northwest favorite!
EPER E K P O SH otlight

Try our three flavors: Original, Classic Caesar or Chipotle.
Mary Lou Henderson grew up with her family in the former Bing Crosby home at Gonzaga and hated to cook. However, she did love to entertain, so in 1956 she formulated a recipe for a tomato onion dip that quickly became a party favorite and her one go-to recipe for everything. About seven years ago, her grandson Chris Greene and his mom, Becky Henderson Fix, who had owned a catering business in Spokane, began discussing partnering to bring the famous family recipe to the public. They first launched the dip as a freshly made product that required refrigeration and had a limited shelf life. It immediately garnered a following, but the medium wasn’t ideal for online sales, shipping, and further geographic reach. So, they worked with a food scientist in Seattle to formulate their spice blends, which are more versatile and don’t
require refrigeration. The blends are now produced by Michlitch Spokane Spice Company in a glutenfree dedicated facility without any preservatives or additives, and 90 percent of the ingredients are Northwest-sourced. This is just one example of their commitment to local. They also source all their marketing and website work from a local firm, and work closely with other local businesses, like Rosauers, Rocket Market, Latah Creek Winery and Simply Northwest. In addition to Mary Lou’s original Creamy Tomato and Onion, Henderson Dips now include Classic Caesar and Spicy Chipotle. “The flavors are very individualized,” says Chris. “I’m not really an onion fan, but the Original is so good!” In 2020, he plans to expand the family of flavors with two new blends. You can buy Henderson Dip spice blends on their site, on Amazon, in regional Rosauers stores, and in other small local grocers.

We offer personalized style from head to toe and love building friendships with our customers at the boutique and salon. “I have a love for business + community, and a passion for fashion. That’s how we’ve built the concept of a boutique, salon, and online store.” – Tiffany Mulgrew
A quick visit to Fringe might not be so quick. Time will fly when you’re shopping one of Spokane’s largest boutiques for women’s clothing and accessories. For 10 years, owner Tiffany Mulgrew has loved when guests linger, browsing the curated collection of on-trend styles and leaving time for friendly conversation. “My favorite thing about owning Fringe has been meeting new customers daily, and being active in our community,” Mulgrew says. “I love seeing people I meet at Fringe out in Spokane.” While she loves the in-person connection, her brick-and-mortar boutique (which is also a popular salon!) has been bolstered by FringeCollection.com, a rapidly growing online store for women of all ages. The move has been
great for connecting with customers, both near and far. “We love having our newest venture,” she says of the online platform. “Not only are we able to offer our great styles to the savvy online shopper, but our in-store customers can go online and see the styles we have before coming in to feel them in person. … It’s a win-win for all our customers.” For Tiffany, creating a sustainable business model helps her prioritize local community. From the everyday, in-person friendships built at the boutique and salon, to partnering with dozens of local charities, Fringe is making a positive impact in Spokane. In-person or on your device — or both — she invites you to join in.

Mom’s Custom Tattoo and Body Piercing is not your average tattoo shop. Owner and tattooer Beth Swilling has been tattooing for over 15 years. Coowner, and Beth’s oldest daughter, Shandra, is the shop’s manager and body piercer. Beth, whose background is in art and graphic design, started tattooing in her late 30s.
“Skin is a challenging medium to work with because it’s living tissue, and everything is always moving or stretching,” she says. “It’s really an amazing process.” Mom’s Custom Tattoo began in 2009 as a small studio on the Northside and moved to its current location in the Kendall Yards neighborhood in 2014. Shandra, now with over five year’s experience in piercing, helped create and develop the new studio and brand image. “We moved because we needed more space, and
The Swillings say their shop hosts a diverse group of artists and guest artists, offers a large variety of implant grade jewelry, and is committed to cleanliness and safety standards. The business recently debuted a new jewelry website (MomsJewelry.com), and plans to participate in Small Business Saturday on Nov. 30, in addition to hosting a holiday sale event. “We’re the only shop within 130 miles with an Association of Professional Piercers membership; we exceed the standards of safety, piercing techniques, quality of jewelry and continued education,” says Shandra. “Our goal is always to provide a welcoming environment for all our clients, and we hope that passion comes through,” says Beth. Come see us! We enjoy our customers so much!
Parents walking by Wonders of the World in the historic Flour Mill sometimes shoo their kids away, worried they’ll break something expensive. “Nonsense. Come on in, everyone!” Pamela Barclay, who founded the store in 1992, will say with a smile. “I’m usually the one who breaks things.” When you enter, it’s no wonder she wants to welcome children in. The space (like Pamela herself) exudes a sense of childlike wonder, filled to the brim with an eclectic collection of jewelry, beads, artifacts and natural wonders (like fossils!). To Pamela, it’s not the price of the item that matters — it’s whether or not it is captivating. “We have items from 5 cents to $25,000,” she says.
“And we love to offer each child three free rocks.” Browsing through the world imports, gifts and souvenirs, it’s easy to get lost in banter with Pamela and her staff, who are quite friendly and very knowledgeable about the items they carry. Shoppers of all ages love to pick out something one-of-a-kind and beautiful, like a hand-carved wood sculpture from Bali or a sparkling purple geode. And they all stop to stare at Annie, the 50,000-year-old cave bear skeleton. “Magical” products and experiences like these have helped the store thrive for 27 years. “We’ve always said, ‘There’s magic inside Wonders of the World,” Pamela says. “The magic is what happens when people find things they love that are meant just for them.”

Tina and Mike are building a community, offering items from local craftspeople and events like pole dance classes
It all started with Stina Rae Photography, Tina and Mike Brandvold’s photography studio dedicated to pin-up rockabilly style. Together, they developed a strong following for their vintage aesthetic, creating a boutique collection of hard-to-find retro clothing and items, which they popularized at car shows and street fairs. In 2017, they took the plunge, opening their own brick-and-mortar spot in the North Monroe business district: Atomic Threads Clothing Boutique. Upon entering the store, you’re immediately immersed in Tina and Mike’s strong sense of style. But despite the specificity of pin-up rockabilly clothing and accessories for both women and men, the strongest sense is actually that of inclusivity for everyone. For example, shoes are a major seller — and they want to solve your unique shoe problems. Yep, if you need large Pleaser high heels for a drag show, Atomic has them up to size 16.
It’s early, but the reviews are speaking clearly: Atomic is really talking to (and broadening) its target audience. For example: “Such a fun place with tons of super unusual, colorful, retro & rockabilly items!” and “Cute and sexy clothes and accessories. Pin-up and vintage style and lots of alternative shoe options. The owners are super helpful and nice. Cannot recommend enough!” In addition to carrying hard-to-find brands from the U.S. and U.K in both their in-person and online stores, Tina and Mike are building community in Spokane. They work to source items from local craftspeople, and they are creating fun new events like artist showcases, pole-dance classes, and “The Bombshell Revue” — a “variety burlesque show where anything can happen!”

The Discovery Shop
THE GARLAND DISTRICT Explore one of Spokane’s favorite neighborhoods to find local art, music, vintage clothes, thrift stores, food and fun!
The Garland District is known for its walkable streets, filled with a variety of local shops, restaurants, bars and alleyways covered in local artists’ murals. Inlander readers have voted it Best Neighborhood Shopping District. Carol Haisler, manager of The Discovery Shop, says the neighborhood lends itself well to window shopping. “You never know what treasures you’ll find,” she says. “It’s a fun and friendly area to just wander about.” Music enthusiasts can get their vinyl fix at a couple of places including Over the Moon Relics
North Hill on Garland that also has a collection of antique radios if you really want to go back in time. But if playing is your thing, Mark’s Guitar Shop can get you
started in playing music and not just listening. When the thrill of the hunt is the way you like to shop, stores like ZipperZ Inc. and Booktrader are great destinations to hit up. Book lovers are sure to find something new to read amongst Booktraders’ shelves. Owner Karin Degner-Lister recommends visitors take a day or two to explore the neighborhood. “This is a really eclectic place, with unique treasures and experiences around every corner,” she says. Artistic and academic types might consider taking a beginner’s class at The Spokane Art School & Gallery. Meanwhile, crafters need to visit Sew E-Z Too, a complete fabric store, bead store and needle arts supply shop catering to the creative needs of sewing enthusiasts, quilters and knitters. Other small businesses offering specialty services include Sunny Buns Tanning Salon, Houk Chiropractic, Interiors by Robin, The Candle Bar Co., Quam’s Watch Center and Accurate Insurance. Visitors with canine companions can stop in at the Bark and Snip grooming salon for a trim or doggie treats on their adventure through the district. The shop’s co-owner and

groomer, Rachel Napier, says the neighborhood sets an easy-going pace for residents and visitors alike. “It’s an older neighborhood, but recently we’ve had some newer shops and restaurants open up,” she says. “It’s quite fun to work here because there’s always something happening.”
“THIS IS A REALLY ECLECTIC PLACE, WITH UNIQUE TREASURES AND EXPERIENCES AROUND EVERY CORNER,” While Rover is getting freshened up, so can you with a quick stop into Missy’s on Post. Featuring Paul Mitchell products, the staff here can get you ready for any day or night on the town. Hungry? Swing into the Garland Mart for a quick on the go bite or treat for the kids. Stop into Garland Mercantile to sample locally made goods including pepper jellies and huckleberry products, or grab a bite at Fergusons Cafe, known for its breakfast fare, or Mary Lou’s Milk Bottle, the iconic diner with awardwinning milk shakes.
Spokane Art School & Gallery Fergusons’ waitress Michelle Lyon says both restaurants and the district itself have a fun, historical feel. “Our diner has a ’60s theme, which brings back some fun memories for folks,” she says. “It’s a very lively, walkable place during the day, and at night it’s lit up like a mini-Vegas strip, which is quite pretty.” The North Hill on Garland is one of the district’s newer restaurant and bar spaces, uniquely housed in the former Masonic lodge at the corner of Garland and Wall Street. Not far away is Beerocracy, a cozy taproom with 19 rotating craft beer handles and an impressive bottled beer library. And no visit to the area is complete without taking in a movie at the beautiful, historic Garland Theater, which runs your favorite second-run movies at discounted ticket prices. As far as timing, consider planning your next shopping excursion on Small Business Saturday on Nov. 30 and the Winter Wonderland Festival on Dec. 14.

We are a go-to boutique for just about any style: vintage, hand-crafted, upcycled, repurposed, antique or modern.
As Chic & Shab: Upscale Home Decor approaches its second anniversary in January, owner Jenny Cashion reflects on everything she’s learned running her shop. “I want to do this one thing really well, serve
my customers the best I can, and make this store successful,” she says. Along with her 16 vendors, she strives to offer enough variety so that people can find what they’re shopping for, but also customize the space and staging so they can picture the items in their homes. Jenny first became interested in jumping into the shabby chic industry because of
her love for painting furniture. After a while, she had taken on so many projects, her house was bursting with loads of furniture. So, she started working at a local store and in January 2018 opened Chic & Shab on Monroe. From the start, Jenny wanted a space that was less packed than a gift shop, more diverse than a vintage or farmhouse store, and more appealing to a wide range of tastes, budgets and lifestyles. In addition to a cohesive medley of furnishings and home decor, customers can browse hand-painted signs, chic clothing, paper goods, and Dixie Belle paints — for creatives like Jenny and the artists in all of us. Furnish Your Life. At Walker’s Your Style is in Stock!
Walker’s Furniture is a family-owned and operated home furnishings store that started right here in Spokane in 1980 by Mark and Pam Walker. Long-time employee and part-owner Gary Absalonson says the store, which started off specializing in solid oak furniture, has grown into a full line furniture dealer. “The Walkers started this as a family business, and today their focus is passing it onto the next generation through their daughter Crystal and her husband, Adam McDaniel,” he says. “The future is bright, and they couldn’t be more excited and committed to making the next 39 years even better.” Absalonson says today Walker’s Furniture offers a variety of living room, bedroom, dining room, home office, entertainment, and accent furniture and mattresses. “Walker’s often has one-of-a-kind accessories and furnishings you won’t find elsewhere,” he
says. “We have a 220,000-square-foot distribution warehouse in Spokane Valley, which enables us to keep about 90 percent of product in stock and ready for immediate pickup or express delivery. There are very few area furniture stores that have that capability.” Absalonson says today Walker’s Furniture & Mattress is a regional chain with a total of 14 stores in Washington, Idaho and Oregon, with three locations in Spokane, one in Coeur d’Alene and another in Sandpoint. While the times have changed, Absalonson says the business’s success is due in part to its determination to provide quality products at good value and honest customer service. “Our motto and core belief has always been ‘exceptional people providing an exceptional shopping experience,’” he says. “We’re also very thankful to our loyal customers who have supported our growth, and we strive to give back to the community whenever we can.”

THE GENERAL STORE “What was once a small surplus store is now the best department store in Spokane, still locally owned by the same family.”
The General Store has been in operation for nearly 75 years now, and over that time what started as a small surplus store has grown into one of the Inland Northwest’s most beloved got-everything-youneed department stores. Owner Bruce Barany, whose family started the store in 1946, says the business now includes two locations, one on Division Street in Spokane and the other on Argonne Road in Spokane Valley. “Three generations of our family have been involved in daily operations of the store, starting with my father, William Stephen Barany, who was a war veteran,” he says. “Today I’m blessed to have my sons, Miles and Tom, working with me in the business.” Barany says his father’s military background helped him to start the business as a surplus store in downtown Spokane. Later, he purchased
land on Division Street, and in the 1950s the store began to transform as consumer goods became more readily available. Today, the General Store’s Division location spans an entire city block. With the store’s 75th anniversary upcoming, Barany says he’s considering adding additional landscaping and resurfacing the parking lot of its Division flagship location. “Our last major expansion to that location was in 1992,” he says. “About five years ago we made the decision to partner with Ace Hardware to open the second store in Spokane Valley. We’ve worked with Ace for about 35 years now, so we have a pretty good relationship with them.” In addition to being an Ace Hardware store, Barany says the General Store offers various sporting goods, top brand apparel, automotive parts, kitchen products and housewares.

The General Store features one of largest selections of Carhartt brand clothing in Spokane.
“WE’VE EVOLVED TO INCLUDE A LARGER, MORE DIVERSE RANGE OF PRODUCTS.”
New store GM Mark McKee brings decades of experience and new energy to the General. “Over the years, people’s interest in hunting and outdoor sports has increased, and as a store we’ve evolved to include a larger, more diverse range of products to meet their needs,” he says. He says the store’s eclectic selection of merchandise plays a big part in its appeal.
“We visit about a dozen trade shows every year to collect new merchandise, and we’re always thinking up new ideas,” he says. “There are loyal customers who’ve moved out of the area, but will still come back to visit when they’re in town, so we know we’re not just the typical cookie-cutter department store.” Barany says supporting and giving back to the Spokane community has also been an important aspect of the store’s operations. “We’ve always been a community store, giving back to as many schools and local charities as we can,” he says. “We try to hire local employees, bank locally, and even buy local goods when possible. We support Spokane because Spokane supports us.”

The red carpet is fun, but she’s just as capable of helping professional women find that perfect piece for the boardroom, the classroom, or wherever life takes them. “People call me the bra whisperer,” Victoria Zvoncheck-Ferro laughs. “And yes, we are the world’s best bra fitters here at Audrey’s. But we’re so much more.” More than 50 years ago, Audrey’s Boutique began with a specialty niche — a women’s fashion destination in Spokane that catered to the needs of women during their post-mastectomy journey. “At the time, nobody talked about ‘The Big C’,” says Zvoncheck-Ferro. “But the original Audrey was a cancer survivor herself, and she simply said, I can do this better.” So she did. And several decades later, ZvoncheckFerro still fulfills that mission as the owner of Audrey’s. But under her watch, the shop’s offerings and clientele have expanded. While lingerie is still a primary focus, Zvoncheck-Ferro is passionate about helping women of all ages achieve a fresh look, from head to toe. Well, almost. “We don’t carry shoes.” If you’re planning a special evening, Victoria is your secret weapon. During her career as a specialty retail executive, she has dressed women
“For a small , local business to continue to provide a product and service for 50+ years, well it’s quite an accomplishment!”, explains Victoria. “In this age of internet gratification, we appreciate the confidence our clients have in us. It’s a testament to myself and my staff as well as to all the women who have owned Audrey’s and carried on the Audrey’s legacy.” “We provide a level of service you just don’t see anymore,” she says. “Every woman who walks into Audrey’s is beautiful. And I want every woman to walk out in an outfit that makes her feel like a badass beauty. Because that’s who she is.” Zvoncheck-Ferro is also a big supporter of the “Buy local, Give Local” philosophy. Under her ownership, Audrey’s is a supporter of local groups such the Runway Renegades Foundation, Beyond Pink, Breast Intentions and the Miss Spokane Scholarship Org. State-wide they also sponsor the Miss Washington Scholarship Org, through the Miss America Org. “These groups provide grants and scholarships helping to further empower women personally, professionally and academically,” says Zvoncheck-Ferro. “We are women helping women in whatever way we can.”

Simply Northwest is more than a gift shop. It’s a welcoming experience that offers unique and fun products for both the receiver and giver. “You can come to one place and buy something for everyone on your list,” says owner Denielle Waltermire-Stuhlmiller. In 2011, Denielle purchased Simply Northwest from the original owner, who had built it into a successful gift-basket business. Denielle had been her retail manager for five years and, while the gift-basket side of the business was and is their bread and butter, she had a true passion for retail. She has since focused on the shop in Spokane Valley and expanded their online store to include more regional retail products.
The store is separated into sections for easy browsing, from sports gifts and kids games to food and wine, home decor, and even a “sassy girlfriend” area. Denielle also seeks out products from small local companies and stocks souvenir items. “Spokane doesn’t have a lot of locations to find made-here or souvenir products,” she says. “We carry a nice selection of locally made products, from apparel and accessories to ornaments, magnets, and hiking books for the area.” It’s obvious Denielle and her employees aren’t just gift store cashiers. Rather, they’re experienced “gift specialists” trained to ask the right questions and find the perfect product for your gifting needs. “We may not always be able to compete on a price level with big box stores,” says Denielle, “but we can compete with our excellent customer service.”

D O W N T O W N C O E U R D ’A L E N E Look to the Lake City for a charming shopping experience with more than 125 wondrous shops, eateries, art galleries and more for you to explore
Ready for some retail therapy? You won’t find a better destination than Coeur d’Alene, where shopping adventures are paired with views of pine-forested mountains and breathtaking views of Lake Coeur d’Alene. This lakeside playground is also where small-town charm meets world-class resort-town amenities.
SHOP
Whether you are looking for fine art or fashion, start your shopping adventure on picturesque Sherman Avenue in the heart of downtown Coeur d’Alene. Here, you’ll find boutique shopping at its best, with premium brands and a variety of styles, from Pacific Northwest-inspired athleisure wear to the latest runway trends. Brides to marathon runners can find what they are looking for, and more often than not, will be greeted by a local shopkeeper who shares their passion. Downtown Coeur d’Alene also boasts a bevy of locally owned specialty stores that sell everything from Irish imports and antiques, to cigars, Christmas ornaments (all year round!) and diamond rings. Ten distinctly different art galleries are also worth exploring. While you’ll find white box galleries showcasing contemporary artists to one of the region’s most esteemed art galleries on Sherman Avenue, make sure you also explore
Fourth Street to see one of the largest inventories of Native American art, another gallery featuring emerging artists, as well as a working art studio.
DINE
When you are ready to refuel, the hardest part will be deciding where to stop. Just need a little treat? You’ll have to choose from two different artisan ice cream shops or one of the most Instagram-worthy bakeries in the Northwest. A half dozen coffee shops stand by ready to pull your shots of espresso. If you need more substantial fare, you’ve got it. In just a few city blocks, you’ll find Canton, Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Greek and Northwest cuisine, plus one of the most celebrated burger joints in the nation.
PLAY
There are countless ways to play in this magical city by the lake. Something is always happening in Coeur d’Alene, from festivals and farmer’s markets to parades and concerts. Downtown Coeur d’Alene also boasts two large lakeside parks with play structures, walking paths and a dog park for your furry friends.
