Why Shopping Local Matters
Brought to you by
At its best — shopping is fun. It’s a chance to discover and inspire. That throw pillow you saw in that shop on east Sprague can set a whole room transformation in motion. It’s a chance to express your individuality, and often, an exercise in generosity, as you scour the shelves of that kitschy downtown Spokane store to find a gift that tells your favorite co-worker you totally get them.
What you may not realize is that shopping local is an investment in our community.
If you spend $100 at a local store, roughly $68 stays right here in Spokane. Spend that same $100 at a national chain and only $43 remains, according to data from the Small Business Association. Our local shopkeepers create jobs, support families, and are far more likely to assist local causes. They sponsor soccer teams, donate to charity auctions and volunteer with nonprofits. In fact, small businesses donate 250 percent more than larger businesses, according to SCORE, the nation’s largest network of business mentors.
Shop small, and you’re also guaranteed to find something unique, or even handcrafted. Perhaps most importantly, when you shop locally, you are supporting a dream. You’re backing that plant enthusiast who had the determination to turn his daydream into a day job or that longtime retail worker who finally took the bold step to open her own boutique.
For more than 120 years, Washington Trust Bank has invested in our community’s small businesses and entrepreneurs. We’re a bank that believes you can open your own pottery studio or start a clothing line that celebrates the Pacific Northwest. We’re a bank that knows when you shop local, you make a big difference.
Think Local. Live Local. Shop Local.

Josh King Royal Blue WoodworkingFine
Going with the grain to create lasting beauty and functionality
Josh King’s Royal Blue Woodworking is named for his first dog, Bud, a blue Great Dane. For six years King studied at Colorado’s Red Rocks Fine Woodworking College, where, as he puts it, he got to learn from “eight different Michael Jordans.” King has now been a full-time fine woodworker for 12 years, though Bud has sadly passed on.
The craft of fine woodworking is, simply put, “not IKEA,” King says. Each piece is handmade with real wood and primarily bound by wood joinery (as opposed to synthetic joinery like nails or staples). King has extensive experience creating classic American furniture in the form of bookcases, dressers, coffee and dining room tables, and cabinetry using a variety of wood species and types, including reclaimed barn wood. Some pieces also feature dramatic marbled epoxy inlays.
But furniture isn’t all King makes. He
also crafts an ever-rotating inventory of wooden novelties: think custom keepsake boxes, book stands, Japanese-inspired Shoji screens and even powwow drums. Marquetry wall art mixes natural wood tones with colorfully stained sections for a dramatic effect. There’s even a selection of gorgeous, often freeform, fishing nets featuring wood inlay handles. King also takes custom orders. “Whatever you can think of with your brain, I can make it with wood,” he says.
For custom orders, choose a variety of wood you really love, and King will work with you to decide on dimensions that will be just perfect for your space. “If you were to want a bigger piece, like a dining room table, you’d be invited over to the shop,” he says. His shop happens to be located right on his gorgeous property, where he lives with his family and of course his current Great Dane, Duncan.

River Park Square
Shopping, dining, movies and entertainment are easy to access at Spokane’s now 50-year-old community centerpiece
Where in Spokane can you find both national brands and local gems, eat your fill and chill with family and friends year-round? River Park Square, that’s where! Located in the heart of Spokane’s downtown corridor, River Park Square is five floors of fun for all ages, including an AMC movie theater.
“An amenity like River Park Square is key to keeping downtown walkable for residents and tourists alike,” says Rita Koefod, senior director of marketing, communications and branding for River Park Square.
Whether it’s shopping, dining or recreating, every minute spent at River Park Square also contributes to the Spokane community in some way.
River Park Square, adds Koefod, “is a local, family-owned business in itself, and really allows us to get even more involved with our community and support the merchants on a personal level.”
So find something for him at Anderson
& Co. clothiers, for the littles at Whiz Kids, or for anyone on your list at Nordstrom, which, like the center itself, is celebrating 50 years downtown. Check out locally made art, jewelry and household items at the Small Biz Shoppe or at From Here, freshen up at Leland’s Barbershop, or get creative at Polka Dot Pottery’s do-ityourself ceramics studio.
Hungry for more? River Park Square is a dining destination. Do date night at Whim Wine Bar or Twigs Bistro & Martini Bar. Grab a beverage at Rocket Bakery or Tea’s Company, or a sweet treat at Pete & Belle’s. Enjoy gourmet grub at MacDaddy’s or at family friendly Flatstick Pub, which also offers (indoor) golf, games and trivia nights. How about Japanese-inspired cuisine at Shiki Sushi or Native American comfort food at the innovative and award-winning Indigenous Eats?
All that and more can be found at River Park Square.

Walker’s Furniture
Family-owned for more than 44 years, Walker’s Furniture and Mattress aims to provide shoppers with the best items for the best prices.
Since its inception, Walker’s Furniture and Mattress has aimed to offer highquality furniture and mattresses at affordable prices while actively giving back to the community. With an extensive instock selection of furniture for every room, shoppers can find unique items like Amish furniture, Aireloom mattresses, and Italian leather pieces, all designed to provide longlasting quality and style.
Originally a local store in Spokane, Walker’s has expanded to 13 locations across Washington, Idaho, and Oregon, yet it remains a family-owned business. “Our goal has always been to provide the best quality at the best possible price,” says John Proffitt, Director of Quality Assurance.
The Walker’s Cares program reflects
the company’s commitment to community support, a core value for founder Mark Walker. A portion of all mattress sales is donated to charities, with each charity chosen by each individual store. Recently, Walker’s has partnered with local athletes to spotlight the efforts of these local charities. “Mark started this business to support his community,” says Proffitt. “He believed a furniture company could make a significant impact, and we’ve received tremendous community support over the years.”
Despite challenges such as inflation following the COVID-19 pandemic, the company is dedicated to keeping prices reasonable. “We’ve been aggressively seeking ways to reduce prices and combat inflation,” says Proffitt. “Our aim is always to offer the best quality at the best prices.”
More Reasons to Shop at Walker’s
• Purchases of mattresses over $999 include Free Delivery and up to a $300 credit towards additional furniture.
• Financing options are available for many purchases.
• June-July, Walker’s will celebrate its 44th anniversary with special deals and sales. Keep an eye out for these exciting offers.

Hannah Carlson Mulberry Market
Visit more than 40 fabulous local vendors in this single location
In the heart of Spokane Valley lies Mulberry Market, a darling boutique that began as a jam booth at farmers markets, but has grown into a trendy brick-and-mortar shop celebrating its first year in business.
“I didn’t expect to find a building,” says owner and shopkeeper Hannah Carlson. But when the space in Greenacres became available, Carlson, a Michigan native, didn’t even tour it. “I said I didn’t even need to see it. I’d sign the lease tomorrow!”
Three weeks later, she moved her inventory in and set up shop. Along with Carlson’s own wares, 45 local vendors — including popular local brands like Bungalow Candle Studio, Flourish Botanicals and Casting Glass Stones — offer all sorts of hand-crafted treasures at Mulberry. The shop is something of a wonder emporium, filled with artisan jewelry, clothing, kitchen supplies, decor items, soaps, potted plants… the list goes on.
Recently, Mulberry Market added “Mulberry Mini” to the scene as well. It’s an entire portion of the store dedicated to children’s wares where you’ll find toys, bath products, postpartum products, books, dishes and utensils, and all sorts of clothing. “I felt like it was such a need in the area,” Carlson says.
But Mulberry Market isn’t just a market. It’s also a place to create and learn. Carlson and her vendors host frequent pop-up events and workshops. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to make your own candles or soap, try your hand at fusing glass, arrange dried flowers or even get into baking sourdough bread, Mulberry’s vendors have got you.
“I swear, I owe all my success to my local vendors,” Carlson says. One year in, not only has Mulberry planted itself as a Valley shopping staple, it’s also grown into a place of learning and discovery for all those who aspire to be makers themselves.
PROFILE DISTRICT
Welcome to NoLL at River District
A budding riverside district for shopping, eating, recreating and more
NoLL — short for North of Liberty Lake — is one of the area’s newest business districts. Situated just off I-90, it runs along the banks of the Spokane River for roughly 2 miles, making for a rare mix of accessibility, natural beauty and variety of things to do.
The emerging district already offers a satisfying mix of food and drink options. Some of the early cornerstones of NoLL’s growing culinary scene include 3 Ninjas, TT’s Old Iron Brewery and BBQ, Sweet Annie’s Artisan Creamery as well as Versalia Pizza. You can also pamper yourself with services from Maverick’s Barbershop and Tried & True Loft, a hair salon. Among the newer additions are Emrys Beer & Mead Works.
But restaurants, taprooms and ice cream shops certainly aren’t the only draw. NoLL’s immediate surroundings are rich in recreational amenities and green spaces that
are ideal for families and groups craving a laid-back day out. The Centennial Trail borders the district to the north, and adjacent Orchard Park has multiple sports courts and a splash pad. There’s even a spot called The Farm, where you’ll find a community garden, a greenhouse and a small farm stand.
“What we want this to be is more of an entertainment-type district,” says Joe Frank, president and CEO of Greenstone, the developer behind NoLL. “That’s why we’re focusing on local businesses and services that can all kind of create an experience for you. So you can park, stroll along the walking loop, get lunch, walk down and enjoy the river, and just spend some time.”
Another great thing about this walkable, mixed-use district? As NoLL grows, don’t be surprised to find new amenities and gathering places each time you visit.
A Day Out at NoLL
• Visit the Welcome Center and ask for directions to the small beach along the Spokane River.

• Hop on the walking trail, stopping at green spaces along the loop.
• For lunch, Versalia’s pizza is perfect, followed by some scoops at Sweet Annie’s for dessert.
