CASH BACK. Two of our favorite four-letter words.

Introducing the Clearly Cash Back™ card from Washington Trust Bank. It’s the right card for small businesses because it has no limits and no blackout dates. Imagine that. A card that gives you 1.5% cash back on purchases. With the Clearly Cash Back™ card, all restrictions are restricted. Learn more at watrust.com/clearlycashback

Of course this is all subject to credit approval. But after approval you’ll get a kitten. OK, maybe not a kitten, but you’ll earn rewards based on your qualifying net purchases (purchases minus returns and/or other related credits) as long as your account is in good standing (that is, not closed, canceled, blocked, delinquent, suspended or otherwise inactive and not available for use). So as long as your card is good, your rewards are good. Good begets good. Of course, you do not earn rewards on fees, finance charges, or fraudulent or unauthorized charges. Credits (returns) to your account will reduce the rewards available in your account. For more information see Clearly Cash Back™ Terms and Conditions.

Why Shopping Local Matters Brought to you by

A

t its best — shopping is fun. It’s a chance to discover and inspire. That throw pillow you saw in that shop on east Sprague can set a whole room transformation in motion. It’s a chance to express your individuality, and often, an exercise in generosity, as you scour the shelves of that kitschy downtown Spokane store to find a gift that tells your favorite co-worker you totally get them. What you may not realize is that shopping local is an investment in our community. If you spend $100 at a local store, roughly $68 stays right here in Spokane. Spend that same $100 at a national chain and only $43 remains, according to data from the Small Business Association. Our local shopkeepers create jobs, support families, and are far more likely to assist local causes. They sponsor soccer teams, donate to charity auctions and volunteer with nonprofits. In fact, small businesses donate 250 percent more than larger businesses, according to SCORE, the nation’s largest network of business mentors.

Shop small, and you’re also guaranteed to find something unique, or even handcrafted. Perhaps most importantly, when you shop locally, you are supporting a dream. You’re backing that plant enthusiast who had the determination to turn his daydream into a day job or that longtime retail worker who finally took the bold step to open her own boutique.

one are the days when undergarments were unmentionable. As everyone knows, the next best thing to nothing against your skin is a well-fitting undergarment, whether that’s swimwear, sleepwear or everyday items like bras or panties. And whether you’re a size extra small or a fabulous 4X, Chérie Amour has you covered. “We try to be as inclusive as possible,” says Laurie Barrie, who opened the intimate apparel store in Pullman with her husband, Scott, in 2022. Since launching the Chérie Amour brand, the couple have quickly become the go-to for all shapes, sizes and situations. When it comes to bras, for example, size really does matter. “Statistics show 81% of all women are wearing an inaccurate size bra,” says Laurie. Chérie Amour not only offers expert bra fitting, but they also carry bra band sizes 28 to 50 and cup sizes A through L. And they carry bras for women with unique needs, such as those who have experienced reconstructive surgery. Choose from among more than 75

brands in the store, many of them designed by women for women, and for all ages. Chérie Amour also offers sustainable brands that use recycled and recyclable material and uphold ethical practices such as producing 100% organic cotton garments. In addition, everything in the store is also available on the company website, says Laurie, adding that a trip to the store is meant to be a special and welcoming experience.

Joel Barbour

The Great PNW Beanies & Shirts & Stickers & Coolness

T

he Great PNW brings the vibrancy and soul of the Pacific Northwest to life inside its four walls. Inspired by owner and resident graphic designer Joel Barbour’s lifelong love of road trips, camping, skateboarding and photography, The Great PNW’s flagship store in Kendall Yards seeks to create an extension of how its customers feel about where they live. “There is nothing like the Pacific Northwest,” says Barbour, “and we want to inspire people and help people feel connected to the area.” Though Barbour and his team create upwards of 100 casualwear products each year, he maintains that his simplest graphics remain timeless. The store offers T-shirts, hats, beanies, shorts, socks and sweatshirts, to name a few — along with other assorted accessories like toiletry and duffel bags, stickers and decals, and drinkware. Most products are earth-toned, as is typical of the brand: “We have the floor dyed to look very organic, with a lot of wood textures,” says Barbour. The store’s location adjacent to the Spokane River and Centennial Trail effectively

creates an exciting, functional space that not only celebrates the beauty and spirit of Spokane, but also the city’s coolness. Ultimately, Barbour says, The Great PNW hopes to “spread the love for this great area we call home.” With slogans like “Trees & Lakes & Mountains & Coffee” and “Upper Left USA” printed across their work, it’s easy to see how wearers can spread the love, but also the pride and joy that so many of us feel as locals. Whether shopping online or in-store, the brand is all about cultivating an engaging, high-quality experience for customers. “Our demographic is so wide,” Barbour says. “We have a diverse range of graphics and products. Come in and find something you love, something that resonates with you.”

Spokane’s premier urban neighborhood is also a must-visit shopping destination

I

t’s hard to imagine that little more than 10 years ago, Kendall Yards was a barren swath of dirt. Despite its pristine river views, the 78acre former rail yard sat vacant for more than 30 years providing a sharp contrast to the vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood that emerged. Residents love it for its walkability, tree-lined streets and green spaces, but the dynamic mix of local stores, restaurants, coffee shops and its popular Night Market draws visitors from all over. “We don’t just build homes. We build communities, “ explains Marketing Manager Deborah Weed. “We want people to realize that Kendall Yards is a community that has it all.” What you won’t find in Kendall Yards or any other Greenstone neighborhood is big box or chain stores. Instead, shoppers can explore momand-pops like PRAIRIE DOG MERCANTILE, a natural and holistic pet supply store that is family-run. Pop in for specialty dog food or spoil your fur baby with ridiculously cute jackets, leashes and other accessories. The cute factor is also in full force next door at FRENCH TOAST, a meticulously curated baby and children’s boutique. If you want to “win” the next baby shower you attend, shop here for unique and tasteful gifts. Art aficionados have multiple options in Kendall Yards, from MARMOT ART SPACE, an intimate fine art gallery, to WILLIAM

GRANT GALLERY AND FRAMING and MOM’S CUSTOM TATTOO AND BODY PIERCING, which regularly displays local art, in addition to offering artisan-crafted jewelry. Located right off Spokane’s Centennial Trail, FLEET FEET is perfectly situated to outfit runners and walkers. Make an appointment for a custom fitting or allow their inventory of Vuori, Cotopaxi, Patagonia and other premier brands to inspire your next outdoor adventure. Active Northwesterners also shouldn’t miss a visit to THE GREAT PNW, the newest addition to Kendall Yards. This homegrown brand celebrates all things Pacific Northwest — and makes all the great trucker hats, tees, hoodies and socks to outfit you for your next camping trip or beer festival. When it’s time to elevate your style, look to BOUTIQUE BLEU. This chic women’s boutique is always on-trend and ever-so friendly and approachable. An ever-changing assortment of Ink+Alloy jewelry, luxury candles and other accessories make this a go-to gift shop, as well. When it’s time to unwind from all this retail therapy, Kendall Yards has abundant options for wine tasting, sweet treats and date-night worthy restaurants. Pick up a bottle of wine, or stay and sample at NECTAR, CRAFTSMAN CELLARS or MARYHILL WINERY’S Spokane tasting room. If a caffeine boost is in

Eight resources for keeping up on the local food scene There’s a lot to keep track of in our ever-evolving local food scene, but keeping up may be easier than you think. If you aspire to be “that” person who always knows about the hot new restaurants, here’s a breakdown of all the ways the Inlander can keep you a true foodie. Let’s start with the basics. For nearly 30 years, the Inlander has kept its finger on the pulse on our local culinary scene. As the only local media outlet with a dedicated food editor, you can count on the Inlander for food content every single week, from chef profiles to trend pieces. Several annual Inlander issues are also food-focused. The DINING OUT issue comes out every October. As restaurants transition to seasonal, fall-flavors, this is the perfect issue to help you plan your next night out. Every March, the Inlander releases the results of its BEST OF ANNUAL READERS’ POLL. For more than three decades, the Inlander has been asking readers about their favorite pizza joints, sushi restaurants and happy hours. In April, look for THE MENU on Inlander

stands and online. The glossy restaurant guide features stunning photography and a rich index of local eateries. Anyone who loves a good deal should make sure they don’t miss the CHEAP EATS issue out every July. Two glossy magazines, INLANDER HEALTH & HOME and the ANNUAL MANUAL, include dedicated food and drink sections. Find them everywhere you find the Inlander, including Inlander Community Centers at more than 50 local grocery stores like Rosauers, Yoke’s, Safeway and Super One. For food news that lands right in your inbox, sign up for ENTREE on inlander.com, and you’ll receive an email every Thursday. For an entirely immersive experience, don’t miss INLANDER RESTAURANT WEEK Feb. 22 through March 2, 2024. More than 110 restaurants feature threecourse meals for a set price of either $25, $35 or $45. The event guide includes all of the menus, plus chef profiles and food features. Use it during those 10 delicious days or all year long.

Find the Inlander, Annual Manual, Inlander Health & Home and many other food-filled free publications at nearly 1,000 locations all over the Inland Northwest, including in the lobby of 50+ area grocery stores.

Mom’s Custom Tattoo & Body Piercing

Clean, safe and accepting, all with a touch of artistic whimsy

B

eth Swilling — the mom of Mom’s Custom Tattoo & Body Piercing — takes safety seriously at her shop in Kendall Yards, where she works with a crew of highly trained tattoo artists and professional body piercers, including her daughter Scout. “We want this to be a safe place,” says Swilling, “where people can become who they want to become. To me, accepting the diversity of people fits into our paradigm.” Swilling believes the entire tattoo experience should feel empowering and safe, from consultation and custom design to aftercare. For 20 years, she has worn a surgical mask while tattooing. And once a tattoo is finished, Mom’s artists apply high-tech Tegaderm — a breathable, transparent dressing — to keep out bacteria and germs for days, something basic plastic wrap can’t do. Similarly, Mom’s body piercing standards go above and beyond basic safety. Every piercer at Mom’s is a member of APP, the Association of Professional

Piercers. That process demands “way more than what the state requires,” says Swilling. The shop’s APP membership means they can only sell body jewelry made with implant-grade materials. Mom’s embraces a sense of whimsy as well. “We worked hard to have fun little things like spiders and Sasquatch, not just gems,” she says of their body jewelry options. Another area of the store named “Mom’s Crystal Corner” is stocked with lighthearted gift items like stickers, greeting cards and small-batch candles, as well as “witchy elements” like oracle and tarot decks. The shelf also displays bath soaks and soaps handcrafted locally by Black Snake Botanical. As a First Friday Art Walk participant, Mom’s displays work from both local artists and in-house tattoo artists. Full-color prints and originals are available to purchase. Swilling plans to add her own hand-thrown ceramic mugs to the mix by Christmas. To learn more, follow @momsofspokane on Instagram.

Shop Smart, Shop Local

Seven tools to help you find your new favorite local store

S

hopping local can take some effort, but the rewards can be pretty great. There’s the satisfaction of finding something totally unique or even handmade, along with the joy of discovery when you stumble onto a shop that totally elevates your style. Not to mention, our local shopkeepers are experts in their field. You can trust the staff at Audrey’s, for instance, to guide you to a bra that actually fits. The experts at Walker’s Furniture will not only help you pull together a living room that looks great, but they’ll work with you on finding pieces that stay

30

within your budget. One of the biggest obstacles to shopping local can simply be knowing where to go. At BIGFOOT RECORDS, audiophiles will swoon over the vintage vinyl and new releases. Vintage shoppers will need a moment when they enter TOSSED & FOUND. There’s an ample stock of vintage clothing to peruse. But it’s the collection of midcentury modern furniture that may just take their breath away. AVENUE WEST GALLERY features paintings and gifts by local artists. At North Spokane’s THE BOHEMIAN, shoppers can find vintage decor and repurposed furniture, and the works of dozens of local artists and creators, as well as seasonal decor and more at WESTSIDE SALVAGE inside the Bohemian. At THE CANDLE BAR CO. on Garland, choose a nontoxic soywax candle or bring in a container and get it filled with scented wax of your choice. Offering a different use of wax, THE EUROPEAN WAX CENTER (three locations) is where customers seeking hair removal will find certified wax experts using trademarked Comfort Wax. AUDREY’S offers a curated selection of beautiful evening and day wear, and is also the home of the famous Bra Whisperer.

Holli Brown

The Candle Bar Co. Clean and safe fragrances, customized to fit your lifestyle

T

he flicker of flame, the subtle scent of something scrumptious and the knowledge that the candle you’re burning is as good for the environment as it is your home — The Candle Bar Company raises the bar on what candles can be. The Candle Bar candles are 100 percent soy wax with cotton braided wicks for the cleanest burn possible. Its fragrance oils are certified “clean,” meaning they have no nasty ingredients like phthalates and other carcinogens you might find in off-the-shelf brands. The Candle Bar also offers a unique refillable option that lets you customize a candle for that special someone. Simply bring in your sturdy heat-resistant container, like that lovely heirloom dish or mug celebrating the World’s Greatest Mom, and The Candle Bar owner Holli Brown will help you pick out a scent that’s perfect at just $1.25 per ounce of wax or $1 per ounce on Fridays. And the turnaround is super quick — just one business day. The citrusy-sweet smell of Wonder is a bestseller, says Brown, who knows that fall

means an uptick in candles with scents like pumpkin souffle, cinnamon and coffee. Don’t see (or smell) what you’d like from The Candle Bar’s more than 40 scents? Mix your own, including during one of many candle making classes offered at this fun spot in Spokane’s Garland District. Brown is currently expanding the space she’s operated since 2019, adding even more classes, including by the more than 25 local artisans and makers featured in the shop. Brown loves coming up with new events, including live music and a unique sushi making night.

Walker’s Furniture

Being local and family-owned makes Walker’s ready to respond to the needs of a growing community

W

alker’s Furniture & Mattress has come a long way since 1980, when founder Mark Walker opened his flagship store on Spokane’s Division Street and began selling unfinished oak furniture. These days, the family company — now in its second generation of ownership — has expanded dramatically, operating 13 stores in Washington, Idaho and Oregon. While shopping at Walker’s online is always an option, the company has found that when it comes to furniture, people want to touch and feel pieces first, making a physical store presence crucial. Having bounced back from an era of COVID-related restrictions and supply chain frustrations, Walker’s spacious showrooms currently display everything from luxurious Italian leather couches and modern, electric fireplace consoles to rustic Amish bed frames and geometric side tables. Their eclectic decor — including rugs, lamps, wall clocks and artwork — can enliven a lake cabin, refresh a family room or pull together an urban loft. Walker’s understands that their local customers have diverse tastes and lifestyles, and the company strives to serve those needs with a range of styles and price points — from starter

40

mattresses to heirloom-quality dining sets. “We have local manufacturers who can design mattresses so we can provide better price points for our customers,” says John Proffitt, Director of Quality Assurance for Walker’s. Walker’s is continually refreshing its product lines of both local producers and big-name brands. “A lot of things that were here a year ago have been replaced by something new,” he notes. In addition to creating regional jobs, Walker’s strengthens the community with charitable giving and in-kind furniture donations to families in times of crisis and natural disaster. Through a charity program named Walker’s Cares, a percentage of each mattress purchased is distributed to local causes including multiple local food banks. As the Inland Northwest’s population — like Walker’s itself — continues to grow, Proffitt wants newcomers to the area to know, “We’re local, we’re family owned so we can be nimble for our employees and the needs of our community. Yet we’ve grown in size where we can order in large quantities, have stock readily available, and pass discounts on to our customers. That’s an important piece to who we are.”

Spokane Gallery & Framing Celebrating local crafters and artisans in Spokane Valley

ermaids and fairies and wizards, oh my! Fantastical adventure awaits at Spokane Gallery & Framing, which is equal parts expert framing and restoration services, and a unique boutique featuring custom décor, jewelry, artwork and other treasures. “There’s a little magic inside Spokane Gallery,” says owner Holly Swanson, who has more than 35 years framing experience and is the trusted vendor for Spokane’s own Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture. With more than 6,000 samples, Swanson knows just the mat, frame and custom treatment for precious family photos, artwork and other mementos. And she’s one of the only full-service art and frame

restoration providers in the area. Spokane Gallery is more than a frame shop, however. The Spokane Valley spot is also the birthplace of the popular Fairy Festa, a free, interactive, all-ages celebration of all things fantasy with more than 50 vendors, food, music and entertainment that takes place in June. After the first Fairy Festa, Spokane Gallery greatly expanded its fairy garden and added to its inventory of crystals and fantasy frippery. Swanson is committed to supporting local artists, including the Spokane Jewelers Guild. “We’ve been supporting local artists for over 30 years,” she adds. Spokane Gallery celebrates local crafters and artisans through such things as a regular free community craft circle and an ever-expanding assortment of art and craft events. Take a whimsical watercolor, felting, beading or other fun class, or ask about reserving space for your own event. Swanson can help you put together the perfect small family gathering, team building activities, retreat or other special occasion like a birthday party or baby shower.

Sprague Avenue in the heart of the Sprague Union District

Sprague Union Dist ct A vintage neighborhood brought back to life by dedicated, local business owners

I

f you love the renaissance in the Perry District on the lower South Hill, check out the Sprague Union District. Close to everything — the South Hill, Spokane Valley, downtown, Gonzaga University — the District has undergone a big-time makeover and is drawing new businesses and shoppers to its fun-filled streets. “There are a plethora of new businesses down here,” says Carla Klauder, owner of Tickety Boo and Vibe Vintage. “The best part is that we are ALL local!” Upgrades to the district included streetscape improvements and traffic calming, funded by city of Spokane grants and the District’s local businesses. You’ll find four restaurants, six vintage shops, two furniture stores, three coffee shops and two grocery stores, all within walking distance and easy to find. Here’s more about some of those Sprague Union businesses.

Blue Cat Vintage 1919 E. Sprague bluecatvintage.com

“We are a consignment store and offer a variety of pre-owned furnishings, home decor, collectibles and so much more,” says Janet Taylor, who co-owns the shop with her husband Nick; they’ve been in the Sprague Union District for five years now. “Everyone enjoys shopping in our nostalgic 1931 building — many will listen to the music, sing and dance while shopping. We love it!”

Creative Catch Studio 1804 E. Sprague thecreativecatch.com

“My business is a portrait studio specializing in high school seniors, headshots, photos with Santa

54

and photo booths,” says owner Dana Reinke. “We provide an amazing portrait experience, and we’ve been in Sprague Union District for about 10 years now. This district has so many historic businesses and buildings. It’s been through a lot and came out shining bright on the other side.”

Northwest Seed & Pet 2422 E. Sprague nwseed.com

A Spokane tradition for nearly 80 years now, where kids have dragged their parents to see the live pets, while mom and dad can select what they need for their gardens to thrive. In 1978, Bob Mauk worked as a clerk in the plant nursery; in 2018, he purchased the business (along with its North Division location). “The highlight of my job,” Mauk says, “is the good feeling when you help somebody out and they’re appreciative of it.”

Tickety Boo / Vibe Vintage 1926 E. Sprague facebook.com/509ticketyboo 1801 E. Sprague facebook.com/509vibes

At Vibe Vintage, you can’t miss the beautiful green-and-black mural gracing the exterior. Inside is a fun mix of clothing, home decor and other surprises. Owner Carla Klauder says her shop specializes in mid-century modern pieces, throwback items and unique and unusual items from local makers. Just a block away is its sister shop, Tickety Boo, featuring what they call “Good Stuff” — “antique, lacy, rusty crusty heaven,” says Klauder — from over 40 local artisans.

Dianna is an award-winning folk artist, while Fielding is a jewelry designer using vintage and antique found objects. There’s so much to browse, you won’t be able to leave without bringing a few treasures home with you.

The Tin Roof / Bide & Burgeon 1727 E. Sprague tinrooffurniture.com 1730 E. Sprague bideandburgeon.com

The Tin Roof is one of the region’s most beloved furniture stores. In 2020, owner Heather Hanley built on that success by opening a second showroom, Bide & Burgeon, which “opened 75 years to the day, in our original location that my grandfather opened Acme Electric. As a third-generation, locally owned company, we strive to provide extraordinary customer service for our clients because they’re our friends and neighbors,” says Hanley. Stop in at either store for advice from their team of professional interior designers.

The Union Tavern 1914 E. Sprague uniontavern.net

All that shopping can make you thirsty! Since 2018, the Union Tavern has been satisfying visitors and locals alike with their cold beers and tasty pub-style menu. Union Tavern is a great place to feel the history of the neighborhood, with a wooden bar salvaged from Montana and the exposed brick in what was once the Palmistry Building. It’s also a great place to catch the Seahawks or the Zags.
