nline shopping carts don’t offer the same satisfaction as your own two hands behind the wheels. Instant

meals delivered in cardboard boxes sometimes taste just like that — cardboard. Personalized, online styling services can’t tell you, to your face, if those pants actually fit. This year, pledge to shop local. It’s good for the environment, local economy and community — but it’s also good for you. It offers the sights, smells, unique selection and customer service that can’t be matched online.

BOUTIQUES BOUTIQUES BOUTIQUES PLAIDS The Clueless fashion trend is here to stay — with a slight twist. This year’s pieces focus on elevated plaids, rather than mackinaw and boyfriend statements, that offer versatility in both casual and formal settings. Choose bright, eye-catching colors, feminine patterned dresses and mini skirts, and bold plaid-on-plaid ensembles. Plaid is never too busy. It’s fashion.

8

KNITS Fall sweater trends come back each year with slipping temperatures. This year’s knitted pieces pay homage to collegiate parties, babysitters and boho social media influencers. Choose chunky cashmere wraps, oversized cable knit pieces, distressed crop tops, bubblegum knit sweaters in bold hues and preppy frat party sweaters or cardigans.

LEATHER Leather never goes out of style, and this year ’80s biker fashion is coming back full force. Find bold shouldered, crop top black leather jackets or dramatic full trench coats. To create a powerful silhouette and lasting impression for any occasion, look for leather mini skirts and fitted trousers.

SOUS VIDE COOKER Celebrity chefs and cooking shows have elevated the status of kitchen gadgets and techniques. This year is all about sous vide cooking, a technique that uses precise temperature control to deliver consistent, tender, restaurantquality results. In short, with a sous vide cooker, you vacuum-seal food in a bag, then cook it to a very precise temperature in a water bath that eliminates excess waste while maintaining flavors.

KOMBUCHA HOME BREWING KITS Why buy a bottle when you can make a gallon at home? At-home kits provide all the essentials needed to not only brew tangy (healthy) microbes in the comfort of your own home, but will help you keep the kombucha culture alive and going. Plus, choose from stylish kit options with swing-glass bottles and unique glass brewing jars.

BOARD GAMES Pop culture is never looking back from the revenge of the nerds’ insurgence. Plus, board games are a natural throwback pastime for family and friends pledging to put down their screens. Choose from classics like Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride, or try your hand at popular newcomers like Awkward Moment, Anti-Monopoly and Scrawl.

HOME HOME HOME FURNISHINGS FURNISHINGS FURNISHINGS MATTE BLACK Matte black is the new finishing choice — particularly in kitchens and bathrooms — that pairs well with the season’s monochromatic and Scandinavian interior trends. Deep and sophisticated, the color instantly updates accent walls and home accessories in both modern and traditional spaces. Find the color on hardware, paint swatches, cookware, lighting fixtures, planters and more.

30

WALLPAPER This relatively simple and inexpensive update can instantly modernize your home. From elegant to whimsical, wallpaper is the hottest interior design trend, whether your style is new retro, modern rustic or traditional. Choose from textureinspired prints, retro patterns, bold florals, abstract images, art deco designs and hand-printed images when remodeling your space.

PORCHES & OUTDOOR LIVING Avoid cabin fever during the blustery months of the year by revamping your porch or patio. Rather than focus on the backyard, create a cozy, intimate outdoor living space right off your door. Choose outdoor accessories like climate control and retractable screens, patio heaters or fireplaces, warm lighting systems, lanterns or twinkle lights, and oversized cozy furniture with soft, outdoor-friendly textiles.

Throughout, one constant has remained: upscale customer service, delivered by knowledgeable and talented consultants.

1727 E Sprague Ave Spokane, WA 99202

T

he inside of The Tin Roof is resplendent and grandiose, with a contemporary, mod look upstairs and a more casual, rustic feel downstairs. Every nook is artfully arrayed with furniture, art and fixtures creating a tasteful ambience and allowing customers to visualize how the arrangements might sit in their own homes. “We’re not selling throwaway furniture. So we’re looking for furniture that is built to last a lifetime,” says Heather Hanley, thirdgeneration owner and creative director of The Tin Roof. The family-owned shop has evolved since its genesis in 1945 from selling televisions and appliances to housing a bustling furniture and design center.

36

“Ultimately what we’re selling is service, and so even though the commodity aspect of what we’re doing and how we’re communicating that service is different, my grandpa started a business based off of extraordinary service and that is what we continue to do,” says Hanley. Heather’s father, Jim Hanley, attests to the success and why the shop has thrived. “How often do you see the fire of the original entrepreneur passed down through the generations? That’s the key to it,” Jim Hanley says. Part of the service The Tin Roof offers is personal and customizable, including an “In-Home Design Consultation,” which involves having a stylist assist with creating your style, working in your budget, setting priorities and deadlines for your personalized project. It’s a “one size does not fit all” approach to furniture.

The Inland Northwest’s Guide to Shopping Local 2018-2019

From Parisian Industrial to California mod, the store features many styles, although Hanley notes that Spokane has its own sense of taste. “It’s an organic kind of feel. Spokane responds really well to that. We’re not too fussy of a town, so we don’t do a lot of the East Coast look that tends to be high-gloss finishes and a lot of carving. We tend to like

a lot more natural, organic, more on the rustic side of things,” says Hanley. The professionals at The Tin Roof aren’t just interested in selling a piece of furniture or a side table; they’re more concerned about what story that piece might tell in a client’s personal corner. Simon Sinek says “start with why” and the professionals at the Tin Roof do just that. They start with “the why” to better understand “the how” of home furnishings. As a locally owned business, Hanley thinks it’s important to note that Spokane has grown up, and so too has it’s shopping options. You don’t have to travel to Seattle for on-trend and quality designer furniture from today’s best brands... you just have to come down to The Tin Roof!

PALATE PALATE PALATE PLEASERS PLEASERS PLEASERS MANUKA HONEY Honey just got a little sweeter. This New Zealand honey is made from bees that gather nectar and pollen from the manuka bush. In return, the bees produce a honey that’s praised for its extreme antibacterial properties, including its ability to fight infection, treat skin problems and various health complications, all while tasting like a slightly bitter, dark honey.

40

MODERN WHISKEY ACCESSORIES Whiskey isn’t a beverage — it’s a lifestyle. Make it classy and modern with accessories that liven up your afternoon indulgence and holiday parties. Discover crystal whiskey glasses or snifters, Italian-glass decanters, copper liquor bottle pourers, and whiskey stones or ice cube trays that create extra-large blocks. Finally, choose stainless steel cocktail shakers and home bar sets to shake, muddle and mix your way to happiness.

EDIBLE FLOWERS Cooking, garnishing meals and infusing water, oils and vinegars with edible flowers has never been more popular. Whether you’re foraging the fields, have a kitchen planter box or a weekly CSA from a local flower farmer, florals will liven up your dishes. Try them candied on a cake, sprinkled on a salad, mixed into a cocktail or ice cube, or infused with your favorite cooking oil.
