n behalf of all the members of the Spokane New Car Dealers’ Association, I welcome you to the 2018 Spokane Auto Show. This year we present the 38th Show in the history of our Association. The Spokane Auto Show is the biggest showcase of new cars, trucks and SUV’s between the Cascades and Minneapolis/St. Paul. And, unlike other shows throughout the country, the Spokane Auto Show provides you the unique experience to shop, compare and purchase your next vehicle. At the Show you’ll see — and have the chance to drive — the latest vehicles brought to you by the world’s premier automotive manufacturers. This is a once-yearly opportunity where you can find the major brands and all the most popular models under one roof at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center. The theme of the Show this year is Super Heroes — Super Cars. You’ll see the latest in automotive safety and comfort features together with the most advanced technology available to date. You’ll have a chance to meet and greet some of your favorite super characters from the big screen. See Batman and an authentic Batmobile from the ’60s TV Show in the AG Building. And back by popular demand again this year is the NASCAR simulator, where you can take a few laps around the track and see, hear and feel the excitement of being a race car driver. You’ll certainly want to visit all 22 automotive exhibits, featuring vehicles from 27 different makes represented by all of the member dealers of the Spokane New Car Dealers’ Association. Each exhibit features product specialists available to answer your questions, provide you with detailed information, and enhance your vehicle shopping and buying experience. On that note, this year’s Show is co-sponsored by Washington State Employees Credit Union and Numerica Credit Union. Be sure to stop by the WSECU booth in Bay 4 to discuss financing options, take advantage of special Show pricing, and to ask about favorable Show rates. This year there’s something for everyone, and we’re proud to bring you the 2018 Spokane Auto Show. Have a great time!

hen Marlene “Marti” Hollenback passed away last April, the Inland Northwest lost an extraordinary figure. It wasn’t just that she was public-spirited, fulfilling, at the age of just 22, her childhood dream of becoming a nurse. Or that she relished a challenge, joining her father’s car dealership, Dishman Dodge, at his request after her successful 30-year-career in nursing. Or that she was civically engaged, actively serving on boards like the American Red Cross, Deaconess and Valley Hospital Foundation, Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce and Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery throughout her life. And it wasn’t just that she was a trailblazer, rising to become a prominent and respected dealership owner in a male-dominated business. She was, uniquely, all those things — and a warm,

compassionate soul on top of it all. “She came across as very genuine,” says her son, Mark Waltermire, general manager of Dishman Dodge Ram Chrysler Jeep. “With the employees here, she treated them like family. She was a good listener, and that made people feel important and comfortable. That was her specialty.” Marti’s sudden passing hit the region’s tight-knit dealership community equally hard. On a professional level, she had advocated for her fellow dealers for decades as a member of the boards of directors for both the Washington State Auto Dealers Association as well as the National Automobile Dealers Association. But, as usual, it was on a personal level where she made the most lasting impact. “For Marti, it was beyond her relationship with

the customers. It was the relationship she cultivated with everyone she worked with,” says Don Kellman, executive director of the Spokane New Car Dealers’ Association. “Her background as a nurse helped her in dealing with people and in the way that she always exhibited a very caring, human presence.” Kellman was instrumental in establishing the Marlene Hollenback Dealership Citizen of the Year Award. By showing appreciation for those who share Marti’s passion and altruism, it aims to ensure that her local legacy continues. In that spirit, each year the award will recognize one dealer-nominated employee with a cash honorarium while making a matching donation to the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery. Manny Guerrero, a service advisor at Wendle Motors, is the award’s first recipient. He was chosen in part because of his extensive volunteering work with 2nd Harvest, the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery, Junior Achievement, United Way and the Ford Feeds Kids Peanut Butter Drive among many other events and organizations. “I’m really honored,” Guerrero says. “I know all the great things that Marti and Dishman Dodge did and still do for the community. My father was a great support to his city of Quincy, Washington, so I want to do anything I can to support my community here in Spokane and be a good example to my own kids and grandkids. “It’s not something I was expecting,” he adds. “I just feel like we should all do our part and volunteer when it’s needed.” Waltermire says the award and its inaugural recipient are an ideal tribute to his mother: “It’s something she’d be very proud of.”

s r a c n e Gre s d i r b y &H The offerings in the segment friendliest to both the planet and your pocketbook are growing, with Kia and Jaguar joining pioneers like Honda and Nissan

Nissan Leaf

Available in S, SV and SL variants, the completely overhauled all-electric Leaf is out to make big strides in style as well as technology. It’s taken on a more dynamic appearance with bold, angular lines and has been equipped with a larger 40 kWh Li-ion battery that now gets up to 150 miles of range per charge. Nissan’s standard ProPILOT assist is like AI for your automobile, allowing you to follow the car ahead at a certain distance or keep your Leaf in the center of the lane. Starts at $29,990 with a potential $7,500 back in green tax credits on all models.

Jaguar I-PACE

Scheduled to arrive in late 2018, the hotly anticipated I-PACE promises to bring Jaguar’s signature performance and style into EV territory. Front and rear all-electric motors will result in a combined 400 hp with outstanding torque for a zero-to-60 sprint in about four seconds. Just as importantly, the advanced 90 kWh Li-ion battery should give this athletic five-seater a range of more than 300 miles on a single charge. Pricing is still TBD, but your Jaguar dealer can get you on the mailing list to be notified of I-PACE news and Kia Niro Hybrid announcements.

Kia Niro Hybrid

In late 2016, the Kia Niro Hybrid entered the Guinness Book of World Records for scoring the lowest fuel consumption of any hybrid car on a coast-tocoast drive across America. The drivers used a mere 4.1 tanks of gas. Oh, and the Niro Hybrid is a crossover SUV. While you’re letting that sink in, you can prepare to be wowed by the new plug-in Niro Hybrid model, which the EPA has estimated will get a whopping 560 miles on a full tank and full charge. The base LX starts at $28,840; the high-end EX trim includes a wireless charging pad and an 8-inch touchscreen.

Honda Clarity

Acura RLX Hybrid

Acura didn’t completely go back to the drawing board for the 2018 RLX Hybrid — how much can you better the best? — but it did retool its top luxury sedan with a snazzier, more commanding front end and performance inspired by its second-generation NSX hybrid supercar. With electronic torque vectoring, a double-wishbone front suspension and a 3-motor SH-AWD drivetrain, it qualifies as the most advanced and high-performance sedan Acura has ever assembled. Hard to believe something this powerful is both fuel efficient and street legal. Starts at $61,900.

Honda Clarity

There’s something about the design of the Honda Clarity that looks incredibly space age, as if the wheels will retract and the car will start hovering at the press of a button. That technology is still a few years off, but this plug-in hybrid has no shortage of other cutting-edge features, such as the high-tech Honda Sensing safety package as standard and an impressive electric range of 47 miles on a full battery charge per EPA estimates. When the gas engine kicks in, the total range jumps to 340 miles. The wellequipped base model starts at $33,400.

Honda Accord

For decades, the Accord has been the car of choice for those who want it all. Fun to drive? Practical? Eye-catching? Affordable? Yes to all of the above. That all-in-one package has been given some added pizazz for 2018 with an incredibly streamlined, impressively stylish fastback design that gives this popular sedan even sleeker lines without compromising on cabin comfort. The new turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine gives the Accord plenty of pep, and it’s one of the few midsize sedans still offering a manual transmission. Starts at $23,570.

Classics of efficiency like the Accord and the WRX get upgrades for 2018, proving that getting from Point A to Point B should be both an art and science

Hyundai Elantra GT

Mazda6

Not ready to step up to a crossover? That’s fine — the Elantra GT is a compact hatchback that resembles a scaled-down SUV but performs like a zippy racer. Compared to the outgoing GT, the body construction nearly doubles the amount of high-tensile steel for added strength and better driving dynamics. The base Elantra GT starts at just $17,850. For about $4,000 more, the GT Sport model is an upgrade that gives you 18-inch alloy wheels (versus 17 inches on the GT), a 201-hp Turbo GDI engine and Hyundai’s advanced multi-link independent rear suspension.

When you’ve got a midsize sedan that succeeds in looking graceful and dynamic at the same time, you don’t need to keep fussing and fretting over the exterior aesthetics. Mazda understands that, which is why the carmaker chose to focus most of its attention on interior and under-the-hood improvements for the 2018 Mazda6. Though it starts at only $22,820, the cabin is now outfitted in trim that would be at home in the luxury segment, and the powertrain now features the beefcake turbocharged 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder from Mazda’s CX-9 crossover.

Honda Accord

Subaru WRX

Like its esteemed forerunners, the WRX makes no secret of its rally-racing origins. From the brash hood scoop to the thrust of its direct-injection turbocharged Subaru BOXER engine, it’s clear that this sport compact is a precision-made machine for drivers who want raw performance. Famed for its handling, the WRX features Vehicle Dynamics Control with Active Torque Vectoring as standard for hugging even the tightest of corners. And though it starts at $26,995, the optional Performance upgrade completes the look with Recaro racing seats and red brake calipers.

Subaru Crosstrek

Subaru Crosstrek

Although you’d be crazy to mess with perfection, Subaru is clearly crazy. Like a fox. Its acclaimed crossover subcompact got the ground-up treatment for 2018 with an allnew suspension, a more rigid body, snazzier looks, a new BOXER engine with direct fuel injection and enhanced manual or automatic transmissions. Outdoorsy types will love the symmetrical all-wheel drive and 8.7 inches of ground clearance when hitting the trail. The Crosstrek starts at $21,795, but Premium trim with extra safety tech and creature comforts is just a short hop away ($22,595).

Toyota C-HR

Carmakers love to wow drivers with audacious concept designs, but they tend to lose their bravado when transitioning from the auto show turntable to the production line. Not the C-HR. It’s emerged as one of the most distinctive Toyota C-HR crossover subcompacts, with rounded wheel arches and a stout physique that’s clearly aching to leap into fun and adventure. Toyota’s Safety Sense P, a feature-filled driver assist suite that includes lane departure warnings and pre-collision systems, comes as standard on the base XLE model, which starts at $25,395.

Ford EcoSport

Smaller in size and price (starts at $19,995) but big on features, the EcoSport is Ford’s brand-new five-seater aimed squarely at the young — or young at heart — demographic that loves modern tech as much as a livable planet. The ultra-compact SUV’s auto stopstart function cuts the engine in standing traffic to reduce emissions, and the optional SYNC Connect creates an in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot for passengers’ mobile devices. For parents of learners, Ford’s MyKey technology is a Ford EcoSport digital chaperone that encourages good driving habits like seat belt use.

Honda Odyssey

Starting at $29,990 with five — count ’em, five — different models that each offers an impressive set of specs and features, the revamped Odyssey aspires to be the ultimate family minivan. Second-row Magic Slide seats part in the middle to provide kiddos with convenient access to the third row, or you can easily pop out the seating to create a pickupsized bed for carrying whatever your weekend home improvement project entails. Another great feature is CabinTalk, an integrated PA and camera system that lets the driver talk to and keep an eye on passengers.

Suvs America loves its SUVs, and for 2018 there are some fresh, new options from VW and Range Rover along with some new takes on classics from Ford and GMC

VW Atlas

Seated comfortably between Volkswagen’s midsize Touareg and compact Tiguan SUVs, the brand-new Atlas is, well, all about comfortable seating. The award-winning three-row crossover is designed to accommodate seven with ample room to spare for storage and just plain stretching out. Charge your passengers’ digital entertainment using the integrated USB ports, or simply open the full-length panoramic sunroof to let them take in the natural beauty overhead. Starting at $30,750, the Atlas offers a dozen trim options with comfy captain’s chairs and more.

Lincoln Navigator

You might be tempted to say that a powerful upscale SUV like the Navigator screams luxury, but that’s not how Lincoln rolls these days. Instead, the carmaker is focusing on what it calls quiet luxury. In the new full-size Navigator, that takes the form of an interior made blissfully serene through laminated noise-dampening windows and a unique noisecanceling system — complemented, of course, by climate-controlled, 30-way-adjustable leather seats with elegant stitching and even massage functions. This veritable spa getaway starts at $72,055.

Buick Enclave

Now sporting the same robust C1XX chassis that undergirds the strapping GMC Acadia, the new Enclave also features plenty of luxury to augment its first-rate safety. Tri-zone climate control, a 10-speaker Bose sound system, LED tail-lights plus state-of-theart smartphone connectivity

Ford Expedition

With up to 9,300 pounds of maximum towing capacity, optional SYNC 3 voice-activated technology and a classically rugged exterior design, the new Expedition effortlessly combines brawn with brains. And beauty. This year’s model is built using the same aluminum engineering as Ford’s popular F-150 pickup, which not only makes it stronger but as much as 300 pounds lighter than its long line of respected predecessors. The 2018 Expedition lineup extends across five options — from the XLT (starting at $51,695) all the way up to Platinum (starting at $72,710).

Range Rover Velar

Looking as much like a next-gen sports car as a compact SUV, the Range Rover Velar has a slightly upswept tail, an integrated rear spoiler and a long hood that testify to both its power and its maneuverability. GMC Terrain Available in

4-cylinder and V6 variants, it’s engineered to shift effortlessly from highway cruising to rough-and-tumble off-roading. Inside, there are perks like configurable ambient lighting along with a sleek, minimalist cockpit that showcases a futuristic instrument cluster and info panels. Six different models, starting at $49,900, should cater to every taste.

GMC Terrain

The first thing you might notice about the redesigned GMC Terrain is the C-shaped headlights that bracket its hexagonal-edged grille. It’s a subtle refinement to this compact SUV that, in addition to making a stylistic statement, also has a functional benefit — much like the Terrain itself. Under its hood is an efficient turbocharged engine with up to 2.0 liters of displacement and 252 hp, activated by a convenient keyless start. In the cabin, you can fold the seats in a variety of ways to maximize passenger or storage space as needed. Starts at just $24,995.

Toyota RAV4 Adventure Edition

An affordable crossover SUV with obvious curb appeal, the Toyota RAV4 has long been praised for its sportiness (for proof, just look to its recent rally racing wins) and its safety. This year sees the introduction of the RAV4 Adventure, which is equipped with all the stylish trim you’d expect from a VW Atlas special edition as well as the Tow Prep Package. That means you get bonuses like a leather-wrapped shift knob, five-spoke alloy wheels and upgraded engine components geared for heavy hauling as standard. Best of all? This souped-up RAV4 starts at only $27,700.

Lexus LS

When it was first launched in 1990, the LS put Lexus on the map. And it’s about to do it again. Adopting the acclaimed Lexus GA-L platform from the automaker’s fierce LC coupe, this revamped flagship sedan is meticulous in its elegance and unbridled in its performance. The LS 500 (starting at $75,995) and the F Sport model (starting at $81,995) leap off the line to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds while enveloping their occupants in distinctive interior design such as laser-etched wood trim. For the eco-conscious, there’s an equally luxurious hybrid variant too.

Audi Q5

After upgrading its best-selling model with the features that made it a 2017 IIHS Top Safety Pick, Audi could have easily called it a day. Instead the carmaker went the extra mile and outfitted this luxury 5-seat crossover with premium interior materials, the impressive Audi Virtual Cockpit (part of the optional Navigation package) and a cabin that’s feature-packed without feeling cluttered. The Q5 also now rides on Audi’s MLB 2 platform, making it lighter, more fuel-efficient and audi q5 even more fleetfooted. The Q5 starts at $41,500, and all-wheel drive comes standard.

LUXURY Cars If you like your drive to work to feel like a day at the spa, the leaders in the luxury segment are upping their pampering game for 2018

BMW X3

With a design that remains unmistakably BMW, the X3 has received some visual tweaks for 2018, including a roof spoiler, aerodynamic refinements and a wheelbase that’s both longer and wider. Lexus LS

Chrysler 300

Luxury and performance have never been mutually exclusive, but there’s an unspoken assumption that you can’t have both in equal measure. The Chrysler 300 changes all that. With a clear design nod to its Detroit muscle car cousins, this sedan is uncommonly strapping for its segment. The spacious 292-hp Touring model starts at $28,995. Upgrading to the 300C (from $49,995) gets you a 276-watt premium audio system, quilted Nappa leather seating, naturalpore wood interior bezels and a more powerful 363-hp, 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine.

Nissan Titan Midnight Edition

For its Cimmerian-inspired Midnight Edition, Nissan left no component on the Titan undarkened. Black exterior? Of course. Black grille? Check. Black alloy-wheels? Black step rails and bumpers? Black mats and trim? Yep, everything. Right down to tinted glass and exclusive dark headlights. Flip open the gleaming black hood and you’ll find a monster in the form of a 5.0-liter turbodiesel Cummins V8 with 300 hp output and just shy of 400 lb-ft of torque. And if contrast is your thing, you can even get the Midnight Edition in a Glacier White finish. Pricing is forthcoming.

Jeep Wrangler Pickup

Pickup t Trucks

If you’ve ever wished that you could pair the all-terrain ruggedness of the Jeep Wrangler with the practicality of a pickup, you’re in luck. With a little patience, you’ll soon see this pickup enthusiasts’ fever dream rolling into (and quickly out of) showrooms. While Jeep could easily have stitched a bed on its iconic off-roader and let pent-up anticipation drive demand, the Wrangler pickup will likely sport a convertible soft-top option along with a unique Jeep Wrangler custom suspension to handle Pickup heavy loads on rocky climbs. Pricing remains TBD until closer to the launch date.

The relationship between owner and truck is elemental, and there’s a perfect truck out there for everybody who likes to haul and ride high on the road

Ram 1500

Ram has added some appealing new specs to its light-duty workhorse, not least a rear backup camera and specialized options like the powerful Limited Tungsten and the agricultural Harvest edition. It’s not like the 1500 has ever been short on configurations, but the 2018 lineup showcases nine starting trims, including the entry-level Tradesman ($27,095), the Big Horn ($33,590) and the Laramie Longhorn ($50,095). On top of that, there are three bed lengths (5’ 7”, 6’ 4” or 8’) based on one of three cab choices, which seat anywhere from three to six.

A midsize truck that prides itself on versatility, the Chevy Colorado boasts best-in-class honors for towing capacity, fuel-efficiency and output depending on the choice of cab (short/long crew or extended), drive type (2WD or 4WD) and engine (an I4/V6 DOHC VVT or an inline-four diesel). The Colorado with base trim starts at just $20,200, putting it well within the range of those making their first foray into pickups, although the feisty, off-road-oriented ZR2 (starts at $40,360) with a brawny suspension and looks to boot is a tempting upgrade for mud junkies.

Porsche 911

The 2018 911 doesn’t mark a huge visual departure from its forerunners, and that’s a good thing. When you’ve got an aerodynamic silhouette as seductively recognizable as this, the goal shouldn’t be to redesign but to refine. Which is exactly what Porsche has done. The standard 19-inch alloy wheels, touchscreen console, two-zone climate control, parking sensors and HID headlights make the rearengine 911 into a roadworthy all-rounder (starting at $91,100), while a variety of engine and transmission configurations can turn it into a track contender.

Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400

How do you make Infiniti’s best-selling model even better? By cranking it up to 400 hp, that’s how. The Q50 Red Sport 400 takes the elements driving enthusiasts love about this line of sporty sedans — things like 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels and a spry 3.0-liter V6 — and then adds a hearty helping of

Dodge Challenger SRT Demon

The latest Challenger SRT Demon is Dodge’s answer to the question, “Where can you possibly go from here?” It’s a recordsetting, rubber-burning, jaw-dropping modern American muscle car with a custom supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 engine capable of putting out more than 800 horses. That’s the highest horsepower of any production car, which might also explain why the Challenger SRT Demon crushes its competition in quarter-mile drag racing and, yes, even zero-to-60 tests (2.3 seconds). Owning your own slice of hell on wheels starts at $84,995.

Chevy Corvette 65th Anniversary

To celebrate its 65th birthday and flaunt its ability to defy the aging process, the Corvette is getting outfitted in a carbon fiber package that includes a rear spoiler, ground effects and hood, giving its gorgeous Ceramic Matrix Gray finish even more visual pop. Coupes will get a carbon fiber roof and intake ducts, whereas convertibles will get carbon fiber tonneau inserts. If that sounds like a birthday present you’d like to give yourself, bear in mind that only 650 Grand Sport 3LT and Z06 3LZ Vettes will be transformed into Carbon 65 Editions — for a $15,000 fee.
