DOWNTOWN SPOKANE

‘It’s Christmastime in the City’

I

t’s entirely possible Spokane’s own Bing Crosby was envisioning his hometown when he sang such now-famous holiday hits as “Silver Bells.” With plenty to do for all ages, downtown Spokane is still a great place to spend the holidays. “November is when Spokane turns up the volume on holiday festivities,” says Downtown Spokane Partnership’s Marketing and Programming Director Elisabeth Hooker. This year, she adds, “we’re once again looking forward to an amazing holiday season to support

our unique, local retail and hospitality.” On Nov. 18, SANTA ARRIVES at River Park Square, your indoor downtown hub for shopping, dining and more. River Park Square also hosts special events like BRRRZAAR (Dec. 16), when Spokane’s favorite local arts organization brings together more than 70 local artisans at an all-ages indoor market. Spokane’s holiday events really begin to sing a week later on Nov. 25. That’s when Riverfront Park hosts an all-day RIVERFRONT MARKET in the Spokane Pavilion. Later that

same day at the nearby Numerica Skate Ribbon, gather ’round a 63-foot spruce for the ANNUAL TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY, sponsored by Numerica Credit Union. For a great way to experience Riverfront Park, hop aboard a FREE HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGE for an eightminute ride sponsored by Wheatland Bank (continues weekends through Dec. 24). You could spend several days meandering through downtown Spokane’s wide range

of retail shops and still not see everything they have to offer. On SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY, also on Nov. 25, STCU is sponsoring a swag bag giveaway, so you might walk away with something extra special — some of the swag bags containing a $100 gift certificate. Also starting on Small Business Saturday is the KIDS HOLIDAY HUNT AND COLORING CONTEST. For grownups, THE TWELVE DEALS OF DOWNTOWN start on Dec. 12 and are just as easy. Just answer a trivia question posted on Downtown Spokane Partnership’s social media pages to find out about the featured business-of-the-day and its special holiday deal. For details, visit downtownspokane.org. Within steps of Riverfront Park is another enduring Spokane tradition: window displays resurrected from a historic downtown department store dating to the early 1900s. The CRESCENT WINDOW DISPLAYS presented by Global Credit Union can be found along the Main Avenue side of the Davenport Grand Hotel. Look for the displays “dressed in holiday style,” just like the old song says. 

Bring your kids on over to RIVER PARK SQUARE to sit on Santa’s lap to take pictures and make memories that will last a lifetime. “Santa is at the heart of what we do during the holidays,” says River Park Square’s Senior Director of Marketing Rita Koefod. This year, jolly old Saint Nick will make his grand entrance downtown on Saturday, Nov. 18; with him, he’ll bring his famous elves and will kick off the holiday season by lighting his beautiful Christmas tree — which is truly towering at 50-feet in height and decked out with thousands of lights. But what if you and your group just want a classic Chicago steakhouse experience without having to travel to the Windy City? Then it’s CHURCHILL’S (165 S. Post St.) all the way. “there’s always something new to try” meals and martinis. “Our drink lineups change with the seasons, so there’s always something new to try,” says Ian Kegely, a bartender and server at the restaurant. “And though we all love going to grandma’s house during the holidays, the atmosphere here is just as cozy and inviting.” 

hen you’re looking to eat out or grab a drink and socialize, the atmosphere can be just as important as what’s on the food or beverage menu. Whether your preferred holiday vibe is high fashion, Eurostyle or shabby chic, there’s a place for you in and around Spokane.

EXPLORE MORE at visitspokane.com For ultra-stylish with a bit of chill, there’s NYNE (232 W. Sprague Ave.). Long a favorite nightspot of partygoers and music lovers for its hoppin’ dance floor, the neon green bar and halfcourt basketball hoop speak to the ambience as much as the signature Dry Fly martini. (4235 S. Cheney-Spokane Rd.), on the other hand, definitely falls into the dressed-down, laidback category, although that’s not to say that they’re lax when it comes to food. This bakery and eatery on the outskirts of Spokane serves homestyle staples like from-scratch cinnamon rolls, meatloaf, cakes and omelets. HUNT (225 W. Riverside Ave.) could be called rustic, too, but in a different way. The restaurant describes its unique approach as “elevated camp cooking” and features dishes created around game meats like elk, wild boar, rabbit, quail and trout. “Slipping into our cozy basement for food and cocktails is the perfect way to recharge after a long day of shopping,” says chef-owner Tony Brown. In the very same building, you’ll also find RUINS, which moved from its familiar location on Monroe in 2021. But its penchant for gourmet comfort food and culinary whimsy remains, making it an ideal breakfast/brunch spot. Or maybe you’re looking for more of a South of the Border flair? ZONA BLANCA

THE GRAND TERRACE IGLOOS AUTHENTIC LOCAL VIBES... (157 S. Howard St.) looks to Mexico for inspiration, pairing traditional Mexican recipes with contemporary culinary trends. There’s ceviche, which is citrus-marinated fish and shellfish, but the menu also includes standards like tacos, tostadas, carne asada and even street food-style snacks. To leave North America and be transported to Europe instead, head to EMMA RUES (17 S. Howard St.), where the craft cocktails, coffees and French-inspired desserts amid the space’s art deco stylings make you feel like a real bon vivant. For more expansive views, you can ascend to THE GRAND TERRACE (333 W. Spokane Falls Blvd.) above the lobby of The Davenport Grand Hotel. A rooftop cocktail might sound a little chilly in winter, but it’s actually super snug, thanks to the heated igloos that appear between November and February. The interior of NECTAR WINE

& BEER (1331 W. Summit Pkwy.) is clean minimalism warmed by wood and comfy couches, but the real draw is its carefully curated craft wine and beer experiences. Whether you’re a connoisseur or just want to sample something different, you can choose from a hand-picked selection of 16 rotating beers and 40 wines by the glass. 

“U

nderground” evokes ideas of the illicit or the unorthodox, places like speakeasies and dimly lit watering holes whose clientele exists only through word of mouth. While they might not exactly be underground — figuratively or literally — Spokane has its share of spots that channel that same distinctive energy. Take DURKIN’S (415 W. Main Ave.), for example. Named after an early Spokane liquor tycoon, it bills itself as a “natty upscale diner” with small plates, decadent entrees and an impressive list of craft cocktails, draft beer and

wine. To get the true underground feeling, check out its intimate basement bar. In a cheeky nod to a time when revelry was frowned upon, CEASE & DESIST BOOK CLUB (334 W. Riverside Ave.) delights in creating a bookish sense of propriety as the bartenders serve up classic cocktails with creative twists. Far more than a smokescreen, their love for literature is as real as their love of premium liquors. Watch carefully, as you may miss its hidden entrance. You’ll also find a passion for premium liquors at HOGWASH WHISKEY DEN (304 W. Pacific Ave.), although, as the name suggests, there’s a particular specialty. Located in the moody basement of an old cracker factory, themed flights like the Highland Park, Doc Swinson’s and the Glenfiddich let you try an assortment of bourbons, ryes and cask whiskeys to get a feel for your favorite. In a similar vein is PURGATORY (524 W. Main Ave.), another premium and artisan whiskey bar but with added emphasis on craft beer. Their elk burger gets high marks, too. Just north of Riverfront Park, the elegant LORÈN (908 N. Howard St.) can be found in the lower level of the Papillon Building. “Lorèn is the perfect place to celebrate

DURKIN’S LIQUOR BAR

PURGATORY WHISKEY BAR in Spokane, and offers stunning menu options, fantastic wine and delicious craft cocktails with a luxurious ambiance,” says chef/owner Juli Norris. During the day, you can access ITTY BITTY BUDDHA (713 W. Garland Ave.) through its parent restaurant, Little Noodle. But after Little Noodle closes, the entrance to the tiny bar is through the adjacent alley. Once you’ve taken the back way in, you can enjoy wine, seltzer and assorted sake, including sake-based cocktails — plus a scaled-down Asian-inspired food menu. Another proudly diminutive hangout is BABY BAR (827 W. First Ave.), where the

ITTY BITTY BUDDHA BAR dim, windowless interior is a feature, not a drawback. If no-frills cocktails and live music are your thing, Baby Bar is where you’ll find your crowd. But maybe when you’re talking about an underground spot, you just want somewhere that’s down the stairs from street level. The GILDED UNICORN (110 S. Monroe St.) is located inside the basement of the historic Montvale Hotel. And if you make the descent, you’ll find a magical modern American menu with handcrafted pizza rolls and a tater tot casserole, all made with gourmet ingredients. 

INLAND CIDER MILL

Our Cup Runneth Over

S

pokane’s local craft brewing scene has truly flourished over the past decade or so, with more artisanal cideries and microbreweries popping up each year. What’s more, the region has embraced the trend, allowing the earliest pioneers to become established and reliable favorites while newcomers arrive on the scene with fresh identities and flavor profiles. On the north side, there’s the family-friendly INLAND CIDER MILL (1020 W. Francis Ave.). The owners also run Thomas Clare Cellars, so they’ve been able to apply those transferable skills to crafting tasty tap ciders like seasonal Apple Pie or refreshing Lemonberry Scone. Speaking of transferable skills, the Grain Shed, develops artisan brews using some of the same ingredients and skills that go into their artisan breads. Although their beloved bakery is on the lower South Hill, downtown die-hards can still sample beers at their central GRAIN SHED TAPROOM (111 S. Cedar St.). And in Liberty Lake, the very seasonally named SNOW EATER (2325 N. McKenzie Lane) holds regular events to augment its rotation of craft beers.

SNOW EATER “We’re family friendly, dog friendly and often host live music, so everyone can get out of the house and hang out here during the holidays,” says Ashley Tooke-Robinson, team lead at Snow Eater. “For your holiday parties, we offer a takehome charcuterie board and crowlers.” UPRISE (617 N. Ash St.) might be unique among small breweries by hosting a weekly run club. One way to look at it is that the more calories you work off, the more you can indulge in their Munich Dark Lager made with rich malts,

or the award-winning Guava Gose, which is brewed with sea salt and coriander. ONE TREE CIDER (111 S. Madison St.) also has exciting flavors year-round, including seasonals like Caramel Cinnamon and Cranberry. While the best experience is going to be trying them on tap, you can conveniently find One Tree cans and bottles in many grocery stores throughout the region. Those same stores might also carry cans of BRICK WEST BREWING (1318 W. First Ave.) beers, like their popular Brick X Brick West Coast IPA or Germanstyle Pilsner. But the taproom is definitely where it’s at, especially on their weekly Wednesday trivia night when you can test your knowledge while sampling their wide variety of ales. International award-winning NO-LI (1003 E. Trent Ave.) enjoys as strong a reputation for its community-mindedness as for its brews. Their Bier Hall, right next to their Brewhouse, is great for large groups of holiday merrymakers, and their refreshingly fruity hard seltzers will make sure that everyone — including the non-beer drinkers — can enjoy No-Li’s celebrated offerings. The atmosphere at LOCUST CIDER (421 W. Main Ave.) is equally welcoming. Along with flavors like Vanilla Bean and Blackberry, they offer retro video games, board games and ping pong. There’s even barrel-aged hard cider for those who want something a little different. 
