YULE LOVE DOWNTOWN!

Kicking Off the Holiday Season in Style

S

ome might say that the best part of the holiday season is the very start, when anticipation is at its peak. This year, Downtown Spokane is adding to the enthusiasm with a full weekend of exciting kickoff events. The festivities begin with the Lilac Festival’s first-ever 2021 DESTINATION SPOKANE PARADE on Saturday, November 20. “We’re very excited for this opportunity not only to celebrate our community but

to hopefully start a new holiday tradition that really launches the season here in downtown,” says Liz Hooker, business relations coordinator for the Downtown Spokane Partnership. “It’s going to be similar to what you see at the Lilac Torchlight Parade in May with lots of marching bands, floats and community organizations, only very holiday-focused.” The parade also heralds SANTA’S ARRIVAL. After parking his sleigh, he’ll head over to

River Park Square and commemorate the annual lighting of the large Christmas tree in the atrium. The evening’s festivities conclude with a fireworks show at Kendall Yards, presented by the Lilac Festival. Alongside those scheduled events are the CRESCENT HOLIDAY WINDOW DISPLAYS and the free CARRIAGE RIDES,

which run throughout the holiday season. The historic winter-themed figurines are expanding to new locations across downtown this year. You can now find them at the Fox Theater and the Northwest Museum of Arts and CONTINUED PAGE 10 

hose purveyors of ultra-cool from SoCal are bringing their zoot suit vibes to Northern Quest Casino on November 19. BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY has been pumping out retro jazz and updated swing tunes since the early ‘90s, first hitting it big when their songs punctuated Jon Favreau’s screenwriting debut in Swingers. Their second album was, in fact, a holiday record, so listen up for some swinging holiday classics out at the casino. Jim Custer always puts on a great show, and one of his biggest is back for its 45th year, November 19-21 at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center. CUSTER’S CHRISTMAS ARTS & CRAFTS SHOW fills up nearly 80,000 feet of exhibit space with the best craftspeople from around the region. Stop by to find a locally made item — food or art — to put under your holiday tree. Food Network star Alton Brown is back in Spokane on November 23 at the Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox with BEYOND THE EATS: ALTON BROWN LIVE. Part mad food scientist, part standup comedian, part Mythbusters wannabe, Brown’s show is Rated D for “Delicious. Be prepared for occasional aromas, and if you don’t like getting called up on stage, don’t sit too close. It’s been quite a wait, but finally the Best of Broadway is back at the First Interstate Center for the Arts. First came Cats in October, and now, just in time for the holidays it’s MEAN GIRLS, running November 23-28. Based on the hilarious 2004 cult classic movie starring Rachel McAdams and Lindsay Lohan and written by 30 Rock’s Tina Fey, the musical version features dazzling sets and costumes and was adapted for Broadway by Fey herself, with the music written by her husband Jeff Richmond. 

Culture in addition to their usual spot at The Grand Hotel. As for the carriage rides, they’ll be held once again in Riverfront Park. The greener setting proved to be a popular location last year because, as Hooker explains, “you’re literally dashing through the snow as opposed to the streets of downtown.” One slight change is that Friday afternoons are now reserved for community groups such as neighborhood centers or nonprofits. The following Thanksgiving weekend marks the start of two new promotions for 21+ adults in Downtown Spokane: a HOLIDAY WINE WALK and SANTA’S PUB CRAWL. “We have so many great wine tasting rooms and breweries that we wanted to do a season-long loyalty program. Whether you’re a beer lover or a wine aficionado, if you make it to every participating business, you’ll win an automatic prize,” she says. “Of course, we’re encouraging people to drink safely and responsibly, so you’ll have four weeks to take part.” On a similar note, SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY is being extended to an interactive, multi-week event. Downtown visitors who take part in Small Business Bingo and complete the game will be entered to win a raffle. For families with young children, there’s SANTA EXPRESS, located in the former Mobius space in River Park Square. Here kids aged 4–12 can choose from a range of gifts between $1 and $10. Volunteer ‘elves’ will assist them with shopping and wrapping presents for everyone on their list. It runs from Nov. 23 to Dec. 23 with both in-person and virtual shopping options. The added bonus is that proceeds from the store benefit the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery. And then there’s the HOLIDAY HUNT, the popular scavenger hunt that rewards those shopping with young explorers. “There will be different displays all throughout downtown,” Hooker says. “Each display will feature a clue to help solve a holiday riddle. And once that riddle is solved, every kiddo who plays will have the opportunity to get a special gift from Santa Claus.”  For details on these downtown Spokane events and more, visit downtownspokane.org.

anta’s vaxxed and ready to hop into his sleigh to deliver gifts to good kids across the globe this year, so make sure to get your letters posted in time, or head to catch him in person if you can. One place you’ll find the jolly gift-giver is under the 50-foot Christmas tree at RIVER PARK SQUARE in downtown Spokane. He’ll make his first appearance to the local public during the Spokane Holiday Parade on Nov. 20, followed by a brief visit under the tree from 5-5:30 pm. If you can’t make it out that night, don’t worry — Santa is staying busy in Spokane between check-ins with his elves, offering local kids a chance to sit in his lap to share requests and take memorable photos. He’ll be available daily for visits through Dec. 24. You can register for Santa photos online, an option highly recommended by his staff. Those in the community who are STCU members also get $10 off their holiday photo packages when they use their STCU credit or debit cards to purchase, both on-site and online. Special photo sessions with Santa this year include pet photo night (Nov. 29 and Dec. 6), and sensory-friendly photos (Dec. 5 by appointment). Find details and reservations at riverparksquare.com. In addition to regular stops at River Park Square, Santa’s also visiting with kids at SPOKANE VALLEY MALL and NORTHTOWN MALL. Details for both locations can be found online at spokanevalleymall.com and northtownmall.com. 

Behind this restaurant’s air of sophistication is an almost childlike giddiness toward the Yuletide season, with a dedicated warehouse for storing their thousands of decorations. And what could enhance your enjoyment of Churchill’s famous dry-aged steaks more than being surrounded by festively ornamented trees and ample swoops of garland? You can also share that dining experience through Churchill’s Prime Steak Gift Box, which ships the same delectable cuts of meat and herb steak finishing butter right to someone’s door. Like Churchill’s prime steaks and just few blocks away, foodies can delight in the renowned pork tenderloin au poivre at WILD SAGE BISTRO at any time of year. But there’s something about the autumn and winter months that make this melt-in-yourmouth, pepper-rubbed dish seem timely and extra special. On the other hand, if meat-free, vegetarian menus are more your thing, MIZUNA just south of Riverfront Park is sure to sate your craving. A downtown Spokane staple for 25 years, the restaurant’s veggie and grain-based “meatloaf,” which comes topped with a tomato-chipotle glaze, can win over lifelong carnivores. One of the Associates’ biggest fundraisers of the year is CHRISTMAS TREE ELEGANCE, which is back for 2021 and runs November 30 through December 12. Check out the gloriously decorated trees at the Historic Davenport Hotel and at River Park Square; you can buy raffle tickets to win the tree and all the goodies that go with it. Another long-standing Spokane arts organization is the Spokane Children’s Theater, now in its 75th season. And it’s back with safe, live shows at its North Spokane playhouse. Just in time for the holidays, they’re bringing BABES IN TOYLAND to life. The musical, which runs Fridays through Sundays, November 26 through December 19, tells the story of wicked Uncle Barnaby, Little Miss Muffet and Mary, Mary Quite Contrary.

Up in the charming Garland District, there’s another live venue, the Blue Door Theater, but this one’s devoted to comedy and improv. Like other local venues, they’re back to live, safe events and featuring SAFARI: A WILD IMPROV ADVENTURE most Saturday nights (December 4, 11 and 18). This is the Blue Door’s version of Who’s Line Is It Anyway?, fueled by audience suggestions and the hilarious twists and turns they can throw into the scenes. This show is for mature audiences, 16 and older. Local artisans always stock up to have a lot of their best stuff ready for the holiday season, and for the second year you can find a collection of them at the Riverfront Park Pavilion. Make the quick walk to the center of the park for the RIVERFRONT PARK WINTER MARKET, Wednesdays throughout the holiday season (November 17, December 1, 8, 15 and 22). YULE LOVE THE SIPS!

Keeping Spirits High

E

verybody knows that breweries abound in our region, yet wineries and distilleries are also on the rise, offering a unique opportunity to visit the very place where some of your favorite beverages are created. If that location is TOWNSHEND CELLARS, you’re in for an extra treat: Green Bluff, a collection of more than two dozen farms and orchards across 12 scenic square miles. From the country roads that get you there, to the view from their Green Bluff-area tasting room to their award-winning wines, a trip to Townshend Cellars is a special occasion waiting to happen. A winery in one of the region’s largest tech and business communities? Yes! LIBERTY LAKE CELLARS produces two distinct types of wines: bold, berry-forward wines from the Red Mountain AVA, along with their new TAHIJA wines, like the Sangiovese, which medaled at both the 2020 Washington State and Great NW Invitational wine competitions. Stop in for a taste! Downtown and dedicated to local sourcing, DRY FLY DISTILLING has been the very model of success. Since it first opened in 2007, Inlander voters have been lauding them as the best distillery, while the industry has bestowed awards on their whiskey, gin and vodka. In the past two years they added a canned cocktail line and expanded to a new location downtown with a brand new tasting room that would make a great holidayseason pit stop. Can’t decide on wine or a cocktail? You don’t have to at BON BON, a fun little purveyor of craft cocktails right next to the Garland Theater, which also serves a rotating menu of craft beer. But spirits are the specialty at Bon Bon, which is known for its charming, if quirky interior, happy hour specials and movie-themed cocktails. 

ometimes a movie, live show or sharing a meal just isn’t going to fill the bill when we’re looking to be entertained. Now with safety protocols in place, there are oodles of ways to find yourself immersively occupied while actually doing something. FLATSTICK PUB in downtown Spokane offers 28 beers and ciders on tap, food, a challenging nine-hole miniature golf course and a variety of games for people of all ages. Spokane brothers Andy and Sam Largent opened the first Flatstick in Kirkland in 2014, bringing their concept back to their hometown a couple of years ago. “It’s about working with the breweries, making fun events and bringing people together.” says Flatstick’s brand manager Rob Forbes. If mini-golf seems a little too tame, perhaps you’re ready to pick up an axe and hurl it. arrister Winery is a cozy space tucked in near the railroad tracks in downtown Spokane, offering regular live music and sips of their delicious wines. For a truly special night, check out the Northwest Bach Festival’s DECEMBER CLASSICS show on December 9, 11 and 12. Music Director and Grammy winner Zuill Bailey welcomes his friends Helen Hwaya Kim (violin) and Jasmine Arakawa (piano) for a selection of concertos. Shopping with the family is an event all its own, and the Downtown Spokane Partnership has coordinated a series of attractions making for a memorable visit. Free CARRIAGE RIDES, sponsored by Wheatland Bank, are back running through Riverfront Park during the entire holiday season. And if you’re strolling downtown streets, you can see a mix of old classic HOLIDAY WINDOW DISPLAYS (many from the old Crescent windows) and new creations. They’ll be on display at the Davenport Grand Hotel, the Fox Theater and at

the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture in Browne’s Addition. Safe, live events are back at the Spokane Arena, and sports are no different. The SPOKANE CHIEFS have welcomed fans back for the 2021-22 season, and there’s no better way to feel winter than at a hockey game. And with the Seattle Kraken driving even more interest in the sport, you have three chances this week to experience the Chiefs in action, with home games on December 9, 12 and 15. One of the Spokane region’s great parks lies just up the South Hill off Grand Boulevard. It’s 78 acres are great for exploring in any season, with its mix of manicured grounds and natural areas. For years the Friends of Manito invited people into the Gaiser Conservatory for HOLIDAY LIGHTS, but last year COVID moved that outdoors — which made it more popular than ever. The drive-through event is back for 2021, so don’t miss it, December 10-19. 

Perhaps you’re looking for a broader view, say from the top of a wall, to regain perspective on life. WILD WALLS pros will help you learn the ropes of climbing at your own pace at the indoor gym just east of downtown. “Climb as high as you want and then come down when you are ready. erhaps the most spectacular outdoor recreation destination in Spokane County is none other than Mt. Spokane, looming high above the urban lowlands. In the winter, it comes to life, with tubing at Bear Creek Lodge and cross-country skiing on trails all over the 13,000 acres of the state park. Alpine skiing has been part of it since the 1930s, and you can pencil in Dec. 17 as the first date on the calendar for NIGHT SKIING at the ski and snowboard park. Etsy vibes coexists with mall culture for one day every December at River Park Square. One of the best local shopping days of the year hits December 18, when vendors and local artists set up shop in the common areas of the mall for BRRZAAR. You can find one-of-a-kind art pieces and Spokane-themed apparel, and while you’re there you can check out unique national brands like Urban Outfitters and Pendleton.

Spokane singer Cami Bradley captured America’s attention during her run on America’s Got Talent back in 2013, and together with Alabaman Whitney Dean they’ve made nine records as the Sweeplings. Shows are December 18 and 19 at the Fox. With most students away from Pullman for the holidays, the WSU MEN’S BASKETBALL team still needs fans to power its drive to an NCAA berth. That’s where the Spokane Arena and Coug fans all over the region come in; you can see your team without the 90-minute drive and against a quality opponent in Boise State on December 22. ashion and home decor are infinitely cyclical industries, and what goes around always comes back around. But perhaps never before has the desire to fill both one’s closet and living spaces with the styles of yore been so fervent, thanks to several trends. Social media continues to have a big impact on the vintage aesthetic’s current resurgence, with influencers, celebrities and vendors all helping inspire shoppers with creative ways to style pieces, whether going all in on one decade or mixing and matching. When it comes to clothing, a major reason

driving many to buy vintage — especially among younger generations — is sustainability, and a growing awareness of how harmful the fast fashion industry is to the people making it and the planet. The same can be said about home decor. As a result, more are eager to bring home beautiful, solid-wood mid-century or antique pieces because of their built-to-last quality. For local shoppers, the Spokane region’s vintage scene has exploded, with many new shops opening in the past few years. This makes each shopping excursion — whether treating yourself or seeking the perfect, one-of-a-kind gift this CONTINUED NEXT PAGE 

holiday season — an exciting adventure. You never know what you’ll find. One of those new shops, opened in early 2021, is TELEPORT VINTAGE CO. near the Spokane County Courthouse, which mostly focuses on clothing across the decades and is stocked by numerous local vendors. The shop also offers unique, high-quality furniture, art and decor. Teleport owner Paul Forster has been involved in the local vintage scene for over a decade, and knew he wanted to collaborate with fellow vintage vendors in a format different from the traditional vendor mall, where individual sellers rent individual spaces to display their wares. Instead, Teleport mixes all its goods together to create a more cohesive overall feel. “The merchandise is highly curated by the team, because Teleport would not be successful without them,” Forster says. “That was how I built the model, because all these people have very good

skills in their niche.” Teleport is one of many vintage muststops in north-central Spokane, along with the nearby BOULEVARD MERCANTILE on North Washington Street. Originally opened in 2015 in a historic building at the intersection of Indiana Ave. and Northwest Blvd., the shop quickly outgrew that spot, so its trio of owners moved it not too far away in early 2020. With more space, Boulevard’s well-established vendors have been able to expand their inventories of rustic home decor, vintage clothing, furniture and much more. “What we do is not an exact science, but trying to meet the needs of our customers, and to stay fresh — that is the word we use,” says co-owner David Jeffers, who operates Boulevard with his wife Joellen and business partner Dan Webb. “We still struggle at what we want to call this store, because it’s not like any other store. upcycling store — it’s all those things,” Jeffers says. While these two shops aren’t far from the North Monroe Business District’s convergence of vintage vendors — including 1889 SALVAGE CO., TOSSED & FOUND, PAINT IN MY HAIR and others — the entirety of Spokane is dotted with quality vintage shops. One of those operating the longest is CHOSEN VINTAGE, which opened 15 years ago in its massive, 6,000-square-foot space on downtown’s east end. A collaborative shop featuring some of the area’s most well-known vintage vendors, Chosen is a go-to for lovers of vintage fashions from the mid-century to early 2000s. Find everything from band T-shirts to perfectly worn-in denim, plus vintage dresses, boots and more, and lots of vintage furnishings and decor. Out in Spokane Valley, vintage hotspots are tucked away in unexpected places. The GREENACRES VENDOR MALL is one of the Valley’s biggest vendor collectives, with curated spaces that range from the creative to quirky, and from clothing to collectibles. Also in the Valley area is THE BOHEMIAN, which offers a mix of new, old and repurposed pieces from more than 50 vendors and artists who call the Pacific Northwest home. You’ll find sturdy furniture that’s been given a new life with updated paint, finishes and fixtures, handmade and vintage jewelry, wall art, locally made skincare products, houseplants, antiques and much more waiting to be discovered. 

Local Stages are Alive Again

O

ne big way that this 2021 holiday season is different than the last one is that live events are back. Live entertainment venues were among the hardest-hit businesses during the pandemic, but now, through the combination of vaccines and common sense precautions, performers are back to doing what they love. Up at the Garland Theater, it was more than a year closed — the longest stretch in the history of the theater that first opened a few months after the end of World War II. When they reopened in July, it was a little bit like the war had ended, said the theater’s manager, Jasmine Barnes. “People were driving by and cheering and honking. I got a little teary eyed.” National first-run theaters are back, too, including AMC Theaters. And the arthouse Magic Lantern is again showing its usual selection of overlooked gems. Big venues like the Fox Theater, the First Interstate Center for the Arts and the Spokane Arena are also open, again. The FIC, for example, even earned “STAR” accreditation by the Global Biorisk Advisory Council, the highest level of safety it awards. And all the Spokane Public Facilities District’s venues, including the Spokane Arena and the FIC, are sharing their protocols as part of their Safe and Sound campaign (safeandsoundspokane.com), making audience members more comfortable as they settle into their seats. oused in the erstwhile North Hill Masonic Temple, NORTH HILL ON GARLAND PUB places equal emphasis on food and drink. There’s a large selection of red and white wines, craft cocktails and non-alcoholic mocktails, plus draft and bottled beer — all of which are balanced out by thin-crust pizzas, hearty sandwiches and comfort staples like pot pie and mac ‘n’ cheese. It’s a natural dropin destination if you’re already doing some holiday shopping at the small businesses in the Garland District. Best known for its artisan pizzas like

the Wellington (topped with cream, house cheeses, asparagus, cremini mushrooms) or the Columbia (chipotle tomato sauce, chimichurri pork, red onions, black beans), the Audubon–Downriver neighborhood’s FLYING GOAT also dishes up a delicious mix of gourmet sandwiches and salads. Picking up a gift card for a stocking stuffer is a great excuse to dine in yourself. Just to the west of downtown Spokane in Browne’s Addition is THE ELK, a longtime favorite of locals who want good food in a laid-back atmosphere. Traditional corned beef Reubens, the Santa Fe sandwich — a

WINTERGLOW SPECTACULAR LIGHT DISPLAY

YULE LOVE THE LIGHTS!

December 24th to 31st

T

he WINTER GLOW SPECTACULAR has been shining its holiday lights brightly since 2014, when it first set up in Riverfront Park, then for a few years at Cowley Park outside the Spokane Children’s Hospital. But it has settled nicely into its new home in LIberty Lake, at Orchard Park, bringing a great holiday tradition to the growing area. This is your last week to take the free, self-guided tour, but it does run all season, from November 20 through January 1 of 2022.

The Best of Broadway is a special event any time of year, but having a great show make its Spokane debut during the holidays is even better. With its New York premiere coming in 2017, ANASTASIA is literally fresh off Broadway. Set during and after the Russian Revolution, the show asks what if the 5-year-old Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov — Anya — had actually survived her family’s kidnapping by the Bolsheviks. Shows run from December 28 through January 1.

The week after Christmas is always when families are looking for memorable outings, and the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture in Browne’s Addition won’t disappoint. Today the art nouveau innovator LOUIS COMFORT TIFFANY is perhaps best known for the jewelry store that bears his name, but he was a great artist, too. Now at the MAC, you can see 60 of his original pieces in glass, ceramic and, yes, jewelry. (Buy tickets at least two weeks in advance.)

Another great holiday tradition is the Spokane Symphony’s New Year’s Eve performance of BEETHOVEN’S NINTH SYMPHONY — the Ode to Joy. There’s no better place to reflect on the year before and the one ahead than inside the luxurious Fox, with the full Symphony and its Chorale, singing prayers of peace like, “All men shall become brothers / wherever your gentle wings hover.” Music Director James Lowe conducts. 

breaded, pan-seared chicken breast with roasted poblanos and melted Monterey Jack cheese — or the bulgogi beef tacos are indicative of what’s on offer alongside a satisfying mix of local craft beers and cocktails. REMEDY up on the South Hill kicks things up a notch by bringing an unconventional culinary flair to classic dishes. House favorites include the Drunken Clams, which steams fresh clams in garlic butter, red onions, cherry tomatoes and pilsner from local brewer Brick West. Even the otherwise unassuming duck breast is served alongside wood-fired fennel, a piquant spiced orange gastrique and a side of

fried sourdough bread. “Like a lot of businesses around the world, I feel like we missed the holidays last year,” says Celeste Shaw, who owns CHAPS near Latah Valley just off Highway 195. “Even though there are still limitations in place, we’re still looking forward to reinviting people to join us. The holidays are still the holidays, and I love the camaraderie.” She and her staff are cutting the Chaps Christmas tree together at Swenson’s Tree Farm, and she’s looking to decorate a second tree and hold a special Christmas breakfast with Santa to benefit disadvantaged schoolchildren in

Spokane Valley and Sprague. Through gestures like that, Shaw is using the wholesome comfort food she serves, like handmade baked goods and her grandmother’s oatmeal, as a way to bring the community together. And who can talk casual dining without mentioning burgers and brunch? In poll after poll, WISCONSINBURGER on the lower South Hill on the edge of the South Perry District is consistently rated one of the top burgers in Spokane. The Awe Geez makes an indulgent feature of the Badger State’s prize exports, namely cheddar cheese and (deep-fried) curds, while the Port Washington offers an alternative

take on the burger in the form of a marinated portobello mushroom cap topped with spinach and gorgonzola on a pretzel bun. At the aptly named BRUNCHEONETTE near the Spokane County Courthouse, you’ll find tantalizing combos like blueberry muffin French toast or tamale waffles as well as quintessential diner fare like biscuits and gravy or chicken-fried steak. The food is made from scratch as much as possible. “My staff is really passionate about food, so that makes every dish fun to make because there’s so much love that goes into it,” says owner Jolie Forral. “We really put a lot of care into what we’re making.” 

IRON GOAT BREWING

YULE LOVE THE BREWS!

The Land of Hops ’n’ Apples

T

he thirst for craft brewing has yet to be quenched in and around Spokane, which boasts more than three dozen breweries, along with a growing number of cideries. While it might sound like a nod to English royalty, LORD STANLEY’S is actually Spokane’s newest hockey bar — an homage to the Stanley Cup. Whether you’re cheering for Spokane’s own Chiefs or Seattle’s Kraken, Lord Stanley’s is just two blocks south of the Davenport Grand and has a variety of craft beers on tap. Named for a beloved sculpture in Spokane’s Riverfront Park, IRON GOAT BREWING has been a downtown tradition for nearly 20 years. In addition to a tasty menu, Iron Goat has been lauded for its fun tasting room and its bold and unusual beers, like their refreshing fruit-forward Saisons and gnarly (in a good way) Goatmeal Stout.

So many good things come out of the Green Bluff farming community, one of Spokane’s genuine treasures just minutes from downtown. Located steps from their orchard, TWILIGHT CIDER WORKS can wait until the peak moment their apples are most flavorful. Unlike some ciders that only ferment a few weeks, Twilight ages theirs several months, for a refreshing and not overly sweet taste. Look for their seasonally inspired ciders like the 2020 Spiced Apple in area restaurants, or make the beautiful drive and visit their tasting room. While their downtown cider house is the place to try the many offerings of ONE TREE HARD CIDER, you can find their festive ciders plenty of other places, including on the shelves of your favorite grocer. (And now in cans!) One Tree gets rave reviews for their lemon basil, huckleberry and other fruit-forward blends. Also look for seasonal specials like pumpkin and cranberry, all made with local and regional ingredients. 
