T
he 2020 holiday season is here, and like the rest of this year it’s going to be… different. As always, this is a time to take stock of all we have to be thankful for. But this holiday season, we all have a job to do. For starters, we need to keep the spread of COVID in check through personal responsibility. It’s also crucial to support our local businesses. We must balance safety and commerce. The SPOKANE HOLIDAY MAGAZINE is here to help. Inside, you’ll learn about all kinds of ways you can support Spokane — and have fun along the way. Local businesses have implemented all the proper safety protocols and are ready to welcome you. Think of yourself as a secret Santa, sharing your gifts with those local businesses you love most — or with new ones you’ll learn about here. ne of the most common themes in Christmas stories is the sheer perseverance of the holiday spirit. All the Whos down in Whoville didn’t let the Grinch spoil their celebration in the least. This year, with public health precautions in place, downtown Spokane is fully embracing those ideals and not letting anything dampen its legendary holiday spirit. “We’re doing everything we can to offer a traditional holiday experience,” says Liz Hooker, marketing & programming director for the Downtown Spokane Partnership. “It will look a little different, but it will still include the things you’re used to, like the vintage CRESCENT WINDOW DISPLAYS in the windows of the Davenport Grand Hotel. Years ago, these displays were the highlight
of every Christmas season in the windows of the Crescent department store. The Downtown Spokane Partnership brought them back, allowing new generations to see what their parents and grandparents enjoyed when they were kids. “There will be lots to see,”adds Hooker, “entertainment and activities.” For instance, traditional horse-drawn carriage rides will continue, but by reservation this year (visit downtownspokane.org for details). And RIVER PARK SQUARE, along with being a prime retail destination, will once again host the beautiful Christmas Tree Elegance event (Dec. 1 to 13). Downtown’s small businesses remain some of the best places to do your holiday shopping. ATTICUS and BOO RADLEY’S are neighbors Continued on page 10

At the Liberty Building, home to shops like AUNTIE’S, UNCLE’S and POTTERY PLACE PLUS, retailers are going “full-on” with their holiday decorations while keeping their employees and customers safe with common-sense protocols, says Auntie’s owner John Waite. “We’re going to do all of the outward-facing, a lot more festive than normal. We want to make sure that the store pops as people are walking or driving by.” “When you’re downtown, you don’t have to travel far to find something special while also supporting locally owned businesses who care about their customers,” says Hooker. JEMA LANE BOUTIQUE
Greetings From Spokane Valley! I
nside the mix of big national brands you’ll find out in the Valley, there are plenty of locally owned, longstanding shops and restaurants Valley residents love that you need to check out. One new favorite with deep roots is CRIMSON HEARTH, owned by the father-son team of Rick and Kaston Pedersen. Many know Rick for his years with Old European; now they’re putting out the same great breakfasts — and more — from behind the red door on Sprague, just east of University. They specialize in tartiflette — an old French recipe made of cheesy hashbrowns, sausage and eggs. They also use a hearth oven to make an old Swiss pub steak. Over just off Argonne on the way to Millwood, you’ll find AMBROSIA BISTRO. Owners Scott and Kara Cook have created a true neighborhood vibe around their place, and they’ve been perfecting their Continued on page 16

he Shop Small movement keeps growing. While here in Spokane we’ve understood for years the power of supporting our locally owned and operated businesses, the movement went national in 2010; last year, an independent study showed that nearly $20 billion was spent on the Saturday after Thanksgiving at small, local businesses. And 67 cents out of every dollar spent at a local shop stays in the local community, bolstering our economy. This year, it may be a bit harder to shop local, but the need is greater than ever. That’s why local leaders are urging that every Saturday during the holiday shopping season, starting on Nov. 28, is SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY. Look for the “Shop Small” logo, either in person or online, and show your support.

Grab a To-Go Cocktail I
n May, the state of Washington sent a lifeline to restaurants — and lovers of creative alcoholic concoctions — when they allowed the sales of cocktails to go, as long as they are accompanied by a purchase of food. And ever since, Mason jars filled with colorful brews have been spotted around town. Local restaurants — especially those known for their mixed drinks — have jumped on the bandwagon. “A lot of people really appreciate us for our martinis,” says Julianne Colbert, a front-of-house support staff member at TWIGS in Wandermere, “so it’s given us a nice way to stay in touch and interact with them during the lockdown.” Twigs has been selling to-go Lemon Drops and Blood Orange Martinis, to name two popular offerings, from their North Side, South Hill and Spokane Valley locations. And they’re all made with real ingredients, just like their in-house, award-winning drinks, Colbert says. “None of it is

syrup or artificial.” Over at DURKIN’S LIQUOR BAR, home of some of Spokane’s most beloved bartenders, you can bring home a bottled Negroni or Old Fashioned to go along with one of their fried bologna sandwiches. Up at Five Mile, THE BOILER ROOM was an early adopter of the new policy, offering a Huckleberry Lemon Drop or a classic Old Fashioned to go with their wide selection of creative, wood-fired pizzas. The new-to-Spokane COSMIC COWBOY GRILL offers up a Mexcalita and a Smoky Mary along from their River Park Square location. Their kitchen relies on natural and organic ingredients, delivered via street tacos, wraps, salads and more. If you’ve been dreaming about that French 75 or Corpse Reviver No. 2 you had pre-pandemic, good news: You may be able to get a professional version when you pick up your next meal. r

es, it’s long been home to airways — both the Spokane International Airport and Fairchild — but today more people than ever are calling West Plains home, with shops and restaurants popping up to match. One of the best selections of high-end apparel on home decor anywhere can be found right inside the Northern Quest Resort & Casino at WINDFALL. Inside its huge retail floor space, you’ll find legendary brands like Filson, Pendleton and Ugg. Your chances of scoring a perfect holiday gift are high here. Cheney offers a walkable, historic downtown and an eclectic mix of shops and restaurants to browse, including MINERVA’S, featuring handmade jewelry, candles and healing crystals. Back in Airway Heights, you can grab a bite at the Spokane Tribe’s Casino’s THREE PEAKS KITCHEN + BAR. They have weekly comfort-food style lunch specials, and entrees offer a variety of takes on crowd-pleasers like burgers, salmon and pasta. One of West Plains’ go-to stops is THE RUSTY MOOSE, which serves locally sourced ingredients put into satisfying (read: large) dishes. Along with eating in their spaced-out, huge dining room, on the to-go front, you can buy a steak kit to go, for one or two, featuring a 45-day-aged rib-eye along with mashed potatoes and asparagus. r

avorite comfort food? Survey says: something sweet! To bring the flavors of the holidays home this season, there are plenty of places to help fill that needy place in your belly. From ice cream to cupcakes and everything in between, in all corners of Spokane County you can find something amazing to add to your holiday table — or just eat on the way home. Opening your doors for business on March 16, 2020, may not seem auspicious, but for Taylor and Rachel Gano, that’s just the way it worked out for FLUFFY’S CANDY, their one-stop Wonka wannabe out on the Newport Highway. “We’re providing a service for people to try to maintain a sense of normalcy,” Taylor says. The
couple quickly added an online storefront as well. With hard-to-find, often imported caramels, bonbons, marshmallows and more, it turns out candy is a draw for kids of all ages. Fluffy’s bright, cheerful showroom seems to have struck a sweet tooth, even in such a difficult time. Meanwhile, downtown on Third Avenue, you can find the granddaddy of Spokane candy. SPOKANDY has been at it since 1913; it’s a local tradition to share a box of their pastel mints during the holiday season. While a visit to their showroom will make you feel exactly like the clichéd kid in a candy store, they also offer shipping and gift cards. Now with two Spokane locations, one on the South Hill and their new one in Kendall Yards, THE SCOOP has been welcoming walk-up customers throughout the summer and fall. But one thing that kept them going through the early part of the pandemic, and has been popular ever since, is their to-go pints. Creamy and delicious, you can also get their salted caramel in a waffle cone (watch for the pumpkin spice variety), or try their vanilla bean with espresso poured over it. They even offer a Pineapple Dole Whip for a taste of the tropics. In only her second year in business, baker Tiffany Cable drew so many loyal fans to THE BLISSFUL WHISK in Spokane Valley that even during the earliest part of the pandemic the orders just kept coming — especially for her beloved cinnamon rolls. “The local community really came out for me,” Cable says. “I went from selling maybe 10 six-packs of cinnamon rolls per week to doing like 76.” It’s been a whirlwind, as Cable only went to pastry school after her college-age kids encouraged her to

Now you can visit her homey bakery in person weekdays; she’s still taking a few custom orders for her spectacular cakes, but mostly she’s pumping out the cookies and pastries that have built her following. With smaller-than-normal gatherings in store this season, maybe it’s time for a splurge on a show-stopping dessert for your holiday table? Mike and Cassandra Halloran at the HAPPY CAKE COMPANY have been finding new ways to share their flavors as their wedding cake business has been impacted. They tell of customers who have been taking their cupcakes around to drop off on a drive-by tour as a way to say a quick hello to friends while
staying socially distanced. As always, they can hook you up with whatever cake you can dream up. After starting as a business in the Spokane Public Market back in 2011, SPOKANE CHEESECAKES moved to its own Union District storefront in 2014. Owners Gillian and Thomas Speight have been perfecting their craft ever since, with unique crusts (gingersnap, coffee — even gluten-free) and flavors (rum raisin, Mayan spice). They’re only taking preorders at the moment for full-size cheesecakes and selections of mini-cheesecakes. So you can stop in the Union District to check out the cool shops and then pick up your delicious dessert on your way home. r
Sharing Is Caring F
or nearly four decades now, the TREE OF SHARING has served as a community conduit to bring holiday cheer and kindness to local residents in need, and for whom the holidays otherwise might not shine as brightly. While the nonprofit typically sets up volunteer-run information tables at the region’s three malls — NorthTown, River Park Square and Spokane Valley Mall — for shoppers to pick up a tag from an individual’s wishlist, this year’s operations are different. Tree of Sharing executive co-director Russ Menke says that instead of doing in-person gift tag pickups, community members who want to help out will need to visit the organization’s website to claim a tag. After purchasing any gifts, donors can still bring items for dropoff-only at mall tables, staffed from Nov. 27 through Dec. 13. Find more details and claim a gift tag at treeofsharing.org.

ven if international travel is restricted this year, you can still experience the customs and cuisine of different regions around the world. Why not start at D’BALI ASIAN BISTRO in Airway Heights, with dishes inspired by Southeast Asia — citrusmarinated kalbi beef ribs, for example, or traditional nasi goreng. The menu might not feature nastar, the pineapple-jam-filled butter cookies that Indonesians leave out for Santa, but the restaurant’s passionfruit panna cotta with salted caramel sauce is a treat worthy of St. Nick. In Germany, Sankt Nikolaus visits during the early hours of December 6. Instead of hanging stockings, children lay out their shoes to be filled with goodies. That makes Nikolaustag as good a day as any to enjoy a
meal at DAS STEIN HAUS on the North Side at Five Mile. Käsespätzle, which might be considered the German version of mac ‘n’ cheese, is a popular choice here, as are the variety of schnitzel dishes and house-made sausages. Much like in Germany, Christmas Eve in Mexico is a day reserved for large feasts. But you don’t have to wait until then to grab a hearty dinner at COCHINITO TAQUERIA in downtown Spokane, which prides itself on artisanal tacos. The chorizo and winter squash taco as well as the pollo (chicken) made with pipian, a pumpkin-seed mole, are especially well suited to the season. arly in the pandemic, when his firm wanted to do something for their employees and felt the need to support local businesses, Metals Fab in Airway Heights gave out gift cards to local restaurants. “It was a no-brainer for us,” says Todd Weaver, president of the steel fabricator that does work across the Pacific Northwest. “It was something good for employees at the time — it took some worry off them at a time when nobody knew what was going on.” They handed out cards to Cochinito, Hello Sugar, and Downriver Grill (which can also be used at Flying Goat and Republic Pi). “It was also a way to introduce our team to some places we love that they maybe weren’t familiar with,” Weaver adds. The DAVENPORT HOTEL COLLECTION offers a card that works across all their properties — the Grand Hotel, the Historic Davenport, the Davenport Tower, the Lusso, the Centennial — including their restaurants. It’s even good for the Davenport Home Store and the Spa. And you get $50 off for $500 in gift cards (two $250 cards or five $100 cards, for example). Another example of one card giving you multiple options is the one offered by the EAT GOOD GROUP, chef Adam Hegsted’s collection of restaurants that spans the Inland Northwest. It’ll get you credit at the Wandering Table, the Gilded Unicorn, Incrediburger and Eggs, the Yards and many more. Gift cards aren’t just for chains anymore. So, if you want to support your favorite local business and spread the word, whether that’s to your employees or to your friends and family, consider that old last-minute standby: the gift card. r

A Meal To Remember
f you’re looking for a memorable meal out this holiday season, there are so many options across the Spokane area. And with safety precautions in place, many are doubling down on what they do best. Out in Airway Heights, inside Northern Quest Resort & Casino, that’s exactly what they’ve been up to at MASSELOW’S STEAKHOUSE. “Our main concern is for our guests’ comfort,” says Masselow’s General Manager Micahel Miho. “So, we’re trying to institute changes that increase the quality of the service, the experience and the ambiance to get to that comfort level faster and then exceed your expectations.” Some of those changes include choosing between one of two fixed menus, which offer room for variation depending on seasonal ingredients and rotating specials. The threecourse option centers around entrees like char-grilled, aged Manhattan steak or wild king salmon. The four-course option features smoked scallops or grilled filet mignon. A Meal to Remember: Continued
“The service and the food have to go hand in hand,” says chef Tanya Broesder, “so you’re getting a full experience from the moment you make your reservation to the moment you leave with our poundcake and our house-made apple huckleberry butter as your take-home treat.” Over in the Gonzaga neighborhood, as a mainstay of many a special parent-student meal, CLOVER is continuing its decade-plus run of great food with a new executive chef, Bryan Doyle. You can choose from entrees as varied as duck, halibut and even rabbit, and explore its highly regarded cocktail list. Another beloved neighborhood restaurant, on the other end of Spokane’s North Side, is DOWNRIVER GRILL, located just up the hill from the golf course of the same name. “We believe in the sense of community and building a gathering place in the neighborhood for the locals,” says co-owner Juli Norris, “but also to try to be a destination place for people visiting Spokane.” While Downriver lands on the casual side of the fine dining spectrum, you will get something memorable, even if it comes in the form of a special-of-the-night burger or pork belly mac and cheese. r

Liberty Lake Lowdown
he city of Liberty Lake is more than a suburb. Landing halfway between Spokane and Coeur d’Alene, it’s a community all its own, with tons of great dining and shopping options to keep residents and visitors coming back for more. One of the mainstays of the local dining scene is HAY J’S BISTRO, owned by the mother-son duo of Rhonda Entner and Patrick Fechser. His food is inspired by Italian cuisine, but he often includes Asian influences, too — “simple, traditional-style dishes,” Fechser told the Inlander in 2018, “maybe with minor twists.” In the years since, they’ve added the Butcher Block deli and Piccolo’s Artisan Pizza Kitchen right next door. At FUJIYAMA STEAK HOUSE AND BAR, you can find a meal prepared on a hibachi grill right in front of you, along with all the banter and

excitement (fire!) you’d expect from a teppanyakistyle restaurant. Lorraine and Naim Tunca have found Liberty Lake to be a great place for their business, too. Since the pandemic, LORRAINE FINE JEWELRY has continued to serve a steady stream of customers — “I just feel really supported by the community,” Lorraine Tunca says. Along with engagement rings and other mainstays, Lorraine offers repairs, along with an upcoming custom line of “everyday friendly” jewelry. For those looking to fill their homes with something truly unique, Liberty Lake is home to CONSIGN FURNITURE. Filled with highend sofas, armoires and dining sets, along with art both elegant and rustic (think bald eagles), browsing here is an experience all its own. r

Lighting Up the Night RIVERFRONT PARK TREE LIGHTING

hile it succeeds in drawing locals and visitors at any time of the year, RIVERFRONT PARK truly becomes a destination in its own right during the holiday season. This year, the park staff has been working closely with the Spokane Regional Health District to meet evolving local and state guidelines in order to create a safe yet fittingly merry slate of winter activities. The annual HOLIDAY TREE LIGHTING CELEBRATION will take place as usual in late November, but as might be expected, it won’t feature the live group performances and crowds of bystanders as in the past. “We’re going to replace that large gathering with a HOLIDAY TREE WALK,”

We’ll be partnering with local businesses in the community that each decorate their own tree.” Throughout the month of December, the park will also be incorporating a PAVILION HOLIDAY LIGHT SHOW into the Holiday Tree Walk and related activities. “The dynamic lights that we typically have on Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be available during the week. akeout is a great standby when you’d just prefer to enjoy a restaurant-quality meal in the comfort of your own home. It’s been a vital lifeline for many restaurants during a year that has been anything but predictable. And during the holidays, they’re ready to help you with a great meal to celebrate being together. TT’S OLD IRON BREWERY & BARBECUE in Spokane Valley lets you conveniently order online through a menu that’s like a mouth-watering picture book. Want to know exactly what you’re getting with your half rack of slow-smoked ribs or your brisket? The images showcase their full range of meat plates, platters and sides. Even die-hard meat lovers are likely to be pleasantly surprised by RÜT on the lower South Hill, a vegan restaurant that specializes in comfort food. They’ve been seeing steady
demand for their Kung Pao cauliflower bowl and their signature mac ‘n’ cheese. “An entry-level meal for the skeptical omnivore would be our jalapeño mushroom burger,” says co-owner Justin Oliveri. “We’re using an Impossible Burger patty, jalapeño relish, onion straws and sauteed mushrooms. It’s a big burger.” The ever-popular WILD SAGE BISTRO in downtown Spokane has a takeout menu that includes its coconut-crusted halibut with Asian slaw as well as its pepper-rubbed Berkshire pork tenderloin. Ordering online is a cinch, too. In addition to entrees, you can easily choose starters, salads and even cocktails to go. Whether you’re ordering for yourself or an entire household, it’s just as easy to use the mobile-friendly online menu at CASCADIA PUBLIC HOUSE on the North Side at Five

Mile. The numerous sides and add-ons let you personalize your meal in almost infinite ways. If you’re spoiled for choice, it’s hard to go wrong with the Cascadia cheesesteak (thinly sliced regional Angus beef on an Alpine Bakery hoagie) and garlic fries. RUINS on North Monroe and STELLA’S CAFE in downtown Spokane are sister restaurants and can satisfy just about any hankering you might have. Chicken parm sandwich? Gordita? A rotating menu of seasonal and regional dishes? Yes to all the above. Be sure to check Ruins’ social media for the cuisine du jour, as it can change frequently. For a clever twist on takeout, look no further than BEACON HILL CATERING high above Hillyard. They’re making it possible for
organizations to treat folks to holiday gifts and meals without the downsides of large-scale gatherings. Their family-style offerings are, according to owner Ellie Aaro, “very special, very Beacon” versions of quintessential seasonal plates, such as slow-roasted turkey breast with “decadent” gravy and cranberry compote. “If you normally have a 150-person holiday party, you can do this instead. It’s this really heartfelt gesture that still allows you to stay connected with your employees and clients in a meaningful way,” Aaro says. Of course, individual families can continue to order from the weekly Beacon at Home menu, which they deliver and features their signature brownies along with add-ons like Thomas Hammer coffee and Barrister wine. r

o you hear that? It’s the call of the outdoors. As winter sets in and the air turns brisk, it only grows stronger. Activities like snowshoeing, sledding, skiing, snowboarding and, yes, even scouting for the perfect Christmas tree draw us from the warmth of our houses and out into nature. Come late fall, Green Bluff up north of Mead is a regular destination for many folks as they stock up on the final harvest of local apples, buy a few gallons of fresh-pressed cider or pick out a Halloween pumpkin. And just a few weeks later, they’re back at this cluster of rural family farms to ring in the yuletide season. At DIETZ CHRISTMAS TREES, the hunt for your holiday centerpiece begins the day after Thanksgiving. Hand saws and hot chocolate are typically provided free of charge. Down the road, GREEN BLUFF CHRISTMAS TREE FARM has several fir and spruce varieties ranging from 5 to 20 feet in size. There are also pre-cut trees if you’re pressed for time or simply want a more convenient option. For those who plan to participate in more active winter sports, it’s a good idea to gear up — and do it early. As the manager of SHRED SPORTS OUTLET on North Division, Chad Ohman has seen a newfound appreciation for the open air on account of COVID-19 restrictions. “Outdoor recreation has been really, really booming,” he says. “We’re busier right now than Continued on page 58

n the middle of the summer, it wasn’t looking like your favorite neighborhood tasting room would be able to invite you in if they weren’t also a restaurant. But new rules that came down from Olympia in August allowed indoor seating, with the same capacity restrictions as restaurants as long as food is served. Now most of our local breweries have added food, along with following state safety protocols, to welcome you in. And of course, you can always just stop by for the growler-fill to go. ot even a global pandemic can slow Santa down. The big man in red is set to make his usual appearances at local malls this holiday season — with some changes — bringing all some much needed joy and hope. At RIVER PARK SQUARE downtown, the mall’s magnificent, 50-foot Christmas tree goes up on Nov. 14, setting the stage for Santa’s arrival the following weekend, Saturday, Nov. 21. This year, families will need to make an online reservation to visit Santa, where they should also carefully read the precautions being taken to make sure everyone — Santa included — can enjoy the holidays as safely as possible and in good health. Find out more and book a visit at riverparksquare.com. Santa’s also splitting his time at the SPOKANE VALLEY MALL and NORTHTOWN MALL, where reservation-only, socially distanced visits are expected to start in late November and continue up to the last minute, days before Christmas, at both locations. Families also have the option to book a Zoom chat with Santa, who’s apparently taken some time this year to brush up on his tech skills, with details to come at northtownmall.com and spokanevalleymall.com. r

Amazing Accomodations: Continued
through the season, DeLatte adds. At the various hotels in the DAVENPORT COLLECTION, always a hit with visitors and ‘staycationers’ alike, guests have a choice of every kind of accommodation — from upscale contemporary to historic luxury — with convenient proximity to everything downtown Spokane has to offer. NORTHERN QUEST RESORT & CASINO, on the other hand, is perfect if you’d like to be slightly outside of town but still have access to incredible amenities like fine dining and deluxe spa treatments. The resort hotel’s pre-wrapped Holiday Gift Packages are a delightful surprise for their lucky recipients. They range from $125 to $500 and provide different levels of perks. One of the newest additions to the area’s thriving hospitality scene is HOTEL INDIGO in the West First district of downtown Spokane. Its general manager Patrick McLaughlin describes the 108-room building, built in 1911, as “a neighborhood-centric, unique, boutique brand” that aims to celebrate its surroundings. “All the guest rooms have murals from Spokane’s history,” McLaughlin says. “You could see Riverside Avenue around 1910 or the Monroe Street Bridge when it still has the trestle over it. There are a couple of cool ones of the train yards. The restaurant has murals that were hand-painted by Daniel Lopez, a local artist. It’s a whole different feel from anything else in town.” For an extra special deal, be sure to ask about the $89 grand opening rate. r
