ith concrete encroaching into our lives by the minute, there’s a rising need to be more in touch with nature. Spearheaded by Pradeep and Anuradha Barpande, Ecogreen Landscape Technologies India Pvt. Ltd. was started in 2008 to provide sustainable and eco-friendly products and technologies. It is one of the first Indian enterprise to study, produce, install, improve and export ELT Green Wall and ELT Green Roof Systems like vertical gardens, green roofs, green curtains,

ELT India Inspired By Nature In the age of diminishing living spaces and resplendent greens going into oblivion; it was about time for an innovative idea such as ELT to sprout. BY REHANA PENWALA

Vertical gardens include all the methods of covering vertical surfaces by growing plants from the ground or wall

green strings, underwater gardens and urban farming. The inspiration for setting up ELT India came to the Barpandes’ by means of a newspaper article on vertical gardens across the world. Subsequently, they were determined to bring these new ‘green’ heights to the Indian architectural scenario. After a few exchanges between ELT

medium, growing, transportation, installation and maintenance at every stage. Thus, we decided to build our own data bank with information of plant performance in varying parameters like light, water, humidity, temperature, pollution, etc. Yet we found it difficult to procure thousands of plants of one variety and health. We therefore had to start a baby plant nursery and develop few vendors to grow for us. Similarly, we designed and developed each component and process of every system very scientifically to make sure that it will perform in every condition. Training and educating stakeholders was done simultaneously. All these efforts have delivered the expected results across the country.” A novel concept brought into

focus by ELT India is urban farming, whereby crops can be grown on existing or new buildings. “The product for vertical farming will be introduced this October. This will help in optimising use of spaces, add greenery, produce food and reduce the temperature of the building envelop. Some vegetables grown in lightweight green roof weigh just 4 kg per sq.ft.,” says Mr. Barpande. Speaking about ELT India’s future projects, he details, “ELT is now a partner of Huntsman for their new miraculous product Vydro, a substrate for growing almost all kinds of plants. With this substrate we were able to cover an extremely sloped roof (up to 78 degrees) for one project in Dehradun. We are also working

ELT India aims to make these sustainable green technologies a safe, easy and reliable way for the benefit of future generations and the environment. Mr. Barpande adds, “Our approach to a project is to provide sustainable solutions. We believe with the use of new

ew-age lifestyles call for modernisation in the way homes are built too. It’s apt for taking a step away from the traditional use of concrete, cement, steel and other materials in construction to now be able to rely on a non-toxic and recyclable natural material - wood. An ecological business solution born out of this concept is Wood Barn. Wood Barn was conceived in 2006 by architect Anurag Khandelwal and entrepreneur Sanjay Sharma with a vision to deliver environment friendly and environment conscious world class wooden structures in India. Mr. Sanjay Sharma, Chairman and Managing Director, Wood Barn explains, “We offer standard pre-designed models from one bedroom to four bedroom sets or villas, farm houses and multi storied houses. And we also provide customised housing solutions based on client requirements.”

Go Green. Go Wood. An entrepreneurial venture focused on

building wooden structures suffices the requirement of those seeking to create a durable, energy-saving home. BY REHANA PENWALA log culture in the country. CEO of Wood Barn, Mr. Anurag Khandelwal is quick to respond, “Wood products need the least amount of energy to manufacture and this process has the lowest impact on air and water quality. Wood has low thermal conductivity and good insulating properties and is a natural humidity regulator, and thus wooden structures are energy efficient and less humid. Moreover, wooden houses can be remodeled, relocated and redone with ease and minimal wastage.” to long lasting and durable wooden houses? Banishing the question immediately, Mr. Khandelwal reasons, “The wood which we use is kiln dried and heat treated. The treatment done on these houses makes them water proof, termite proof and fire resistant. As far as the durability of our structures goes, the life of a wooden structure depends upon the thickness of the wood. For instance, a 114mm thick wood house will have a minimum life span

of 100 years. However, at Wood Barn we provide all our clients a warranty of five years on all maintenance and repair issues.” Contributing to these ‘wooden attributes’, is the fact that Wood Barn imports fine-grained spruce from Northern Europe and has also tied up with the world’s finest companies from Finland, Canada, Estonia and China to get their approach and experience right. Their firm has also received a

Wood Barn has delivered structures at the most extreme sites and has the capabilities to create homes, out houses, terrace houses, temporary homes, eco resorts, tree houses, energy efficient houses and surprise houses. Wood Barn’s vision goes beyond the creation of wooden structures; they seek to create eco-friendly and absolutely easy to make, manage and live in homes as well as spread

Considering the plethora of benefits that wood as a raw material provides, it puts things in a different perspective. lay has been the object of creative expression for centuries - from India and China to Russia, the medium has given birth to stories and defined generations of countless lineages. Here’s taking a look at the functional aspects of clay pottery, especially whe n t h e m a t e r i a l d e m a n d s cautious negotiation in terms of its treatment - since not only is it docile, but also has a propensity for being easily damaged.

Curators of Clay is managed by two people namely Bhairavi Naik and Rohit Kulkarni. Coming from diverse backgrounds of marketing and mass communication the two eventually realised that pottery is their true calling. The duo began by working simultaneously under the tutelage of Sandeep Manchekar, a well-known potter himself and later decided to open their own studio in Goregaon, Mumbai. As partners, Rohit manages the marketing aspect of the new franchise whereas finance and planning aspects are tended to by Bhairavi. When it comes to manufacturing the end product Bhairavi has an added advantage - her degree in bio-chemistry helps in ascertaining that the product gets the right glaze that will ensure many a client’s gaze. Rohit and Bhairavi complement each other in terms of their work

The Ingenious Curators Of Clay To create essential objects for daily use and yet make each of them a unique piece of art from one of the most natural materials found on Earth is the expertise of Curators of Clay. BY VIKAS BHADRA

From India and China to Russia in the far east, clay has given birth to stories and defined generations of countless lineages

and individuality. Though their body of work may be identifiably different, collectively the dance of harmony is at work. They both share a similar inspiration - a love for the Japanese way of interpreting clay which catapults their thoughts to the next creative level. Japanese culture is modern, yet traditional. The fine balance of age-old customs and the contemporariness they have maintained is commendable; from art movements like Mingei to a tea party, the celebration is adorned with simplicity and a subtle atmosphere of equanimity. Mingei, the Japanese folk art movement dwells on the beauty of everyday ordinary and utilitarian objects. This idea was developed in the late 1920s and 1930s by Yanagi Soetsu. Another major figure of the movement was Hamada Shoji whose work had a significant influence on studio pottery of

the twentieth century. Apart from these Japanese grandmasters, the duo is also influenced by British studio potter Bernard Leach who is referred to as the “Father of British studio pottery”. Closer to home the duo is motivated by the creations of Adil Writer, the owner of Mandala Pottery in Pondicherry, Anjali Khanna, a potter from Alibaug and Jugal Kishore of Andretta Pottery in Himachal Pradesh. Incidentally Andretta Pottery is the same place where Rohit first honed his pottery skill set. Though Bhairavi and Rohit

launched their studio recently, the duo has been working together for five years. The two have never been keen to mass produce. Elaborating on the same, “We are very happy to work with a limited client base, we like to work with clients who take the time and effort to enjoy the customised version of functional ceramics we offer. Likewise the satisfaction we derive out of this exercise makes it a win-win situation for both of us.” Rohit and Bhairavi have a number of creations to their credit, however, a notable project of Curators of Clay was for Camp Camouflage, an eco-home stay at Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh. The client wanted the products to be robust and in sync with the surroundings; the entire set of products designed by the duo included cups, plates,

glasses, water jugs and kettles. Currently the duo is working with a proprietor who wants customised pieces for his cafe in Goa. Additionally, the duo also facilitates setting up meetings with craftsmen who cater to different functionalities of clay and pottery which they do not provide. Spreading happiness is an art in itself and it is something Curators of Clay would like to master through their creations; each of which demands their undivided attention. The resolution of the geometries involved required the use of sophisticated 3D-modelling, completed by Todd’s in-house, in a process of ‘virtual prototyping’ which they developed specifically for the project. The five-storey central atrium is inspired by the majesty of gangways, gantries, cranes that filled the void between the Titanic and Olympic ships when they lay side-by-side upon the slipways. Here a series of glass escalators, each in excess of 20 metres long, stretch up through a jagged central void. At first floor height, a timber decked bridge provides access to the start of the Titanic story. A reproduction of the original staircase on the Titanic ship, made famous by the James Cameron film ‘Titanic’ in 1997, is located in this conference centre. In front of the building is Titanica, a sculpture by Rowan Gillespie depicting a diving female figure.
