THE INSIDE TRACK April 2012

Could you elaborate on Flos’ history in India? The Flos history in India is a very young one. And that is a good fact: if we look at the results we have had till today and if we analyze the potential of the market, we have just to be extremely motivated in promoting and investing more and more here. After a positive and productive cooperation with a pretty well considered Indian distributor based in Delhi, we have decided, at the end of 2011, a few other select dealers, based in different regions of the country, to establish a direct relationship with Flos. The aim is to be visible and reachable in an easier way to both the main categories of clients: the end user and the professional (architect, interior decorator, lighting designer), providing not only the best designed and performing products but possibly the best service too. What has been the response to Flos products in India and how do you see its future in the Indian market? There has always been an enthusiastic response every time Flos have introduced a new product in India. I do confirm there is a lot of appreciation for the Italian design in general and in specific for the Flos designers. Let me remind that talented people like the Castiglioni brothers, Philipe Starck, Jasper Morrison, Antonio Citterio, Marcel Wanders, Piero Lissoni, Patricia Urquiola, and many others have designed and are designing amazing products exclusively for Flos, and this is something that not only makes us enormously proud but that strongly contributes to our notoriety and our success worldwide. Of course in India too. Moreover the Indian architects and designers communities are one of the most sensitive to the application of the new technologies as to the “green and ecological” aspects, therefore, especially referring to the last releases; we are even registering a more increasing interest and enthusiasm about Flos. The future then is bright. A pulsating reality related to the project market

Could you elaborate on the focus of your marketing and distribution?

Moooi Awards @ iSaloni 16

I have to say Flos is not strictly a marketing oriented company. Therefore our marketing activities are basically pretty instinctive. We are good in doing nice products and we try to display this concept the best we can. In the magazines, with clear and essential contents, and to the point of sale, with a recognizable corner or shop in shop where it’s easier, for the consumer client, to find what he is really looking for. The distribution, as said before, has to be coherent with that. So, few selected partners, based in the major cities, displaying in the proper way, the best of Flos.

The 10 layered Heavenly Bed provides the foundation for a deep and calming sleep, whilst plush goosedown pillows, crisp cotton sheets, a cosy down blanket and fluffy duvet wrap you in comfort

Westin spent more than US$30 million to create the perfect night’s sleep and introduce 52,000 new Heavenly beds in its 39,500 guest rooms, becoming the first hotel brand to take sleep seriously. Following an overwhelming guest response and unmatched media attention, “Heavenly” soon became synonymous with “Westin.” Westin Hotels turned the travel industry on its head and sparked a hotel bedding revolution with the 1999 launch of the Heavenly Bed. This unique sleep experience is found in all Westin Hotels worldwide, and is available for your enjoyment at home as well. Westin jump-started the hotel-retail phenomenon after receiving hundreds of inquiries from guests who wanted to know where they could purchase their own Heavenly Bed.

In the decade since, more than 75 million guests have tucked themselves into Heavenly Beds at Westin and more than 30,000 beds and 100,000 pillows have been sold. The sumptuous, 10-layer Heavenly Bed has grown from a cult favourite to a well-loved classic. Westin has expanded Heavenly into a full-lifestyle brand, with similarly luxurious offerings for the bath, the baby, and even the dog! Where most traditional mattresses utilise perhaps 200 springs, the Heavenly Bed utilises approximately 850 of the smaller pocket coil springs. A movement by one occupant of the bed is not felt by the other. The Heavenly Bed is manufactured exclusively for Starwood Hotels & Resorts by Simmons. It features a no-flip 13” pillow-top mattress utilising Simmons patented pocket

The personal style of the work and their ability to express the positive feelings has made Lladró the third most recognised and named brand in the luxury sector abroad. Lladró is well known to draw inspiration from various cultures and heritages and captures their essence in their works of art.

Veena Ganesha

Lladro artists have shown in their work a fascination for Eastern cultures, especially Indian. The luxurious attributes of the ornate and enthralling wonders of India are captured in the pieces of one such collection called the ‘Spirit of India’, which includes works such as Radha Krishna, Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Krishna, the Sacred Cow etc. Recently, Lladró got its ace sculptor Raúl Rubio from Valencia to tour all across India. Raúl has been associated with Lladró for over a decade and has designed some of the most popular and exquisite sculptures. Pieces such as the Rama & Sita, a series of four Ganesha gods (with bansuri, with veena, with mridangam and dancing), are all part of this master craftsman’s work. Raúl did a live demonstration at the Lladró boutiques and took the customers through the intricate process of sculpture making. He also interacted with them to give them insights on this art form. s the urban population spikes in numbers, future cities have to be designed in a way so that the urban population doesn’t lose touch with nature; a perfect symbiosis between the two has to be achieved. In an effort to synchronise this idea in the minds of the young, architects Spanish Architects Javier Gomez Pioz and Maria Rosa Cervera, have conducted a lot of seminars across the world. At a recent seminar held at Studio-X Mumbai, the couple briefed the audience about bionic structures and their inspirations before getting into the nitty gritty of the various projects they have undertaken. “Bionic Structures have flourished in different corners of the world, moreover the convergence of science bionics and bionic architecture has paved the way for a number of sustainable bionic structures which can truly stand out as eco-friendly and energy saving marvels of the 21st century” said Javier who also noted that science bionics emerged in the former USSR and United States driven by the need for armaments. “The convergence of engineering, architecture and biology that bionics has to offer takes into account the holistic aspects of a healthy home, which many a times gets overlooked in a world getting increasingly globalised day by day” added Maria.

Bionic Structures The concept behind Bionic Structures is to let nature act as an inspiration in designing the marvels of architecture. BY Vikas bhadra Javier and Maria enlightened the audience about some of their proposed projects like the Tai Da Times Plaza financial complex in Chengdu, China; the design of the complex takes its inspiration from a cactus plant. Another project, an opera house in Korea derives inspiration from the Humpback Whale. Talking about one of their well known projects, ‘The Bionic Tower’ Professor Javier Pioz said “Of course, we’d all like to live in a house on the beach, but Shanghai’s population is expected to reach 30 million over the next four to five decades, and hence they need a new way of conquering vertical space.” Pioz has created a root-like system of foundations that would descend 656ft, surrounded by an artificial lake to absorb vibrations caused by any earth tremors. The top of this tower is predicted to oscillate by a maximum of nearly 8ft., as much as the Empire State Building in New York but so slowly that it would not be perceptible to its inhabitants. The tower will dwarf Kuala Lumpur’s twin Petronas Towers and would be set in a gigantic, wheelshaped base incorporating shopping

Javier and Maria have been involved with a number of Indian projects too, which include Earth Copia - Gurgaon’s first LEED certified green homes, Centra One Offices in Gurgaon, Delhi; The Shiwalik Housing Tower in

Chandigarh and the Sheraton Bio-Twin Towers in Kolkata. Other international projects based on this ideology include Court of Justice Building in Shanghai Fenqxian, Russian Federation Bank in Voronezh, Embassy of People’s Republic of China in Madrid, Spain and the Hangzhou Xixi Tourist Resort Hotel Group. The Tokyo Sky Tree has a capacity to withstand an 8.0 magnitude earthquake. In fact ever since the tower was thrown open to the public it has turned into a major tourist attraction.
