rains are an integral element of a commuter’s daily routine. Noticeably the most popular mode of transport in Europe, trains are where people spend a considerable amount of their time daily. The Netherlands, as usual is the forefront country that has decided to make some progress surrounding the future of train transportation. The Dutch National Railway Company recently unveiled a series of flexible and modular train configurations that could to adapt to the countless ways commuters like to sit on trains. The company chose Dutch architecture firm Mecanoo and furniture company Gispen to collaboratively develop an idea of what its trains could look like by 2025, and the result may impact the future of transportation. Their goal was to design a train that not only serves a method of transportation, but one that could also be a lounge, office, and space where travellers can enjoy their ‘own time’, rather than solely wait until they arrive at their next destination. As a result, the train interior design concepts are meant to be flexible to accommodate train passengers’ preferred environments and activities Mecanoo and Gispen conducted research regarding train passengers’ activities, and they determined that there are six different types of activity zones that passengers prefer, varying from “open and social” to “private and concentrated.” By designing 12 different furniture modules, Mecanoo and Gispen were able to propose a train configuration that facilitates each of these zones. Most importantly, the firms have created a space where every traveller can find a comfortable place to sit custom tailored to their activity,

group size, needs, and travel time. For example, along with the classic two-seat configuration are a U-shaped group of seats that surround a foldable table, single seats that come with a desk, and even a multi-tiered bleacher seating design. The different layouts of the train’s interior make it appear open, comfortable, and hospitable to people from all walks of life. The fabrics are reusable and the module compartments can be disassembled and reconfigured with ease. While the designs are still in their conceptual phase, the project seeks to eventually become real and reinvent become into a comfortable, pleasant, and an efficient experience. utch studio Mecanno has designed this three-story glass villa from inside out, creating uninterrupted views to the surrounding nature while providing shelter and intimacy. All these aspects work together to ensure the house’s sense of timelessness. The villa is situated in a green oasis of trees and plants that hide the house from plain view. The harmony between the architecture and nature was a key design determinant, particularly regarding sight lines, materials, colours, and lighting. It even features a sunken level floor submerged beneath the water’s surface which contains a jacuzzi, a games room and a home cinema. Water plants along the water line alternate with stepping stones that lead to other parts of the garden. On the water side, the villa has an optimal view over the lake. Terraces on two different levels connect the villa to both the land and the water, anchoring the house in nature and giving it a welcoming presence. Glass corner windows in the living room, kitchen and other rooms make the residents feel like they live on the water. Between the house and the adjacent plot, a hilly finger of land with tall trees ensures privacy.

The atrium helps to reduce the house’s dependency on artificial lighting, as it floods the interiors with an abundance of daylight, right through to the sunken basement

creating more intimate and private areas within the large transparent volume. In the heart of the house, a full-height void connects all levels and creates another series of diagonal and vertical sight lines. A pared-back material palette was chosen for the interior, so as not to detract from the views. It includes pale marble, dark wooden flooring, and simple metal handrails and balustrades. The staircase sews all the rooms together into one interior space. The central atrium brings abundant daylight into the sunken basement and connects the interior to the roof terrace eliminating dependency on artificial lighting. From the roof terrace, one can enjoy panoramic views as if floating quietly over the expanse of the lake. Contact web: www.mecanoo.nl
