With the acquisition of the majority stake of Ceccotti Collezioni the brand and its product now also find a place in Mumbai at the Poltrona Frau showroom at Ballard Estate in Mumbai.

The history of Ceccotti Collections has its origins since the foundation, in 1956, of Ceccotti Aviero. The company, born as a manufacturer of home furniture and later established in hotel supplies, has collaborated with the most prestigious international chains, such as Trusthouse Forte in London, Sheraton and Ciga, giving international scope to an activity born of the great artisan tradition di Cascina, a small Tuscan town located between Florence and Pisa.

W

ith the escalating variants in temperatures, climate change palpably poses a fundamental threat to life on earth.

We find ourselves fighting with the beast of extremes, with longer dry spells, sporadic flash floods, glacier shrinkage and graver impact on the environment in general.

The World Health Organisation has predicted that by 2025, half of the world population would be living in water distressed areas.

Africa, in particular is a continent highly vulnerable to the impact of global warming. It has become increasingly difficult for cities in these regions to provide the basic civic amenities pertaining water services. In 2018, after three consecutive years of scarce rainfall, Cape Town faced a water apocalypse, which was labelled Day Zero - the largest drought incurred municipal water failure in history.

South African designer and Founder of Studio Sway, Shaakira Jassat - in the face of the recent crisis faced by her country - swiftly responded by devising an urban water harvesting panels for buildings that can sustain their own water needs.

Though water harvesting in not a new phenomenon and has been practiced since times immemorial, the existing systems are typically large, cumbersome and difficult to install in urban settings. To add to the space crunch issue in cities, the urban design format with high-rise structures and infrastructure, acts as a deterent.

Talking about the intention behind devising Aquatecture,

contamination markers impose some restrictions in cities, and also do not suit the urban aesthetic. Moreover, heavy downpour also leads to massive wastage of water.

Aquatecture panel doesn’t just aim for crisis management, but also addresses the serious challenge of devising a resilient and efficient water management system in metro cities. Shaakira tells us, “I realised the cities needed something that is compact and easier for people to engage with. I believe this panel will help us reconnect with our water resources in the urban environment.”

Aquatecture is a stainless steel panel system, which can be easily installed on façades of buildings and can function as an integrated water harvesting system.

It is designed to collect rainwater through funnel-shaped pockets perforated on the panels. Due to its corrosion resistant qualities and its durability, stainless steel was the preferred choice of material for Aquatecture.

Sh a a k i r a w e n t t h r o u g h a thorough prototyping exercise to pick the ideal pattern for the openings. Since the panels could potentially be used as stand-alone landscape installation or on the external facades of buildings, the intent was to not only optimise water collection but also to make

it aesthetically appealing. After several tests on the panel with water showers mimicking the rain were carried out Shaakira finalised on rounded funnel-shaped punctures.

The rainwater streams through the openings and is collected in collection tanks before being pumped to the adjoining building’s grey water system, where it gets recycled along with the used water from kitchens, washing machines and other appliances.

Apart from building façades, Aquatecture panels can be installed as urban landscape features and function as water harvesting stations in public areas across the city, catering to landscaping water needs of urban open areas.

Jassat also speaks of the potential of integrating the panels with technology to harvest moisture in the atmosphere. The water vapour panels will apply the principles of thermodynamics to condense the vapour in the air before being harvested by following the regular process.

Currently, Shaakira is working on the next phase of the project, where the team has identified a site to test Aquatecture on an existing building façade in Cape Town. “I have been working closely with my team, made up of Mark Noble, Development Director of the V&A Waterfront Cape Town and

Adam Ozinsky, Building Envelope Designer from Arup, to have the test patch up by early 2020. Ideally, I would like to get Aquatecture tested in various countries where rainfall and moisture content in the air varies.”

Shaakira is on a path of extensive course correction and is exploring all avenues to harvest water for our future generations. She has been actively studying ‘air plants’ like Tillandsia and Bromeliad which fulfill their water needs from the air. She recently presented her research at Dutch Design Week through models showcasing ‘how these plants can inspire architecture to evolve and embrace water as we step into the Symbiocene era’ - an era where humankind shall learn to coexist with the nature symbiotically.

As studies indicate, the rainfall percentage will continue to oscillate and even if we implement regulatory controls the future of water looks grim. Given the circumstances, we shouldn’t wait for ‘Day Zero’ to take action - a multi-pronged effort with wider awareness and outreach programs should begin now to avert future calamities.

Centrally located, the neighborhood around the hotel sits on the former grounds of the imperial palace and is rumored to once have been the home of Japanese samurai

The existing Kyoto central telephone office building was designed by one of the great Ja p a n e s e m o d e r n a r c h i t e c t s Tetsuro Yoshida. Through the central courtyard, this red brick building will converse and create a new harmony with a wooden grid system that reminisces traditional Kyoto. The integrity of Aneyakoji road and Higashino-toin road was preserved through the delicate use of fine louvers and meshes.

These louvers and meshes also act as environmental devices, which gently filters light and

wind. Furthermore, the concrete was mixed with iron oxide to produce a fine warm color, which cannot be fabricated by paint.

Every detail and material was thought through to connect the building, land and history together. Ace Hotel is changing the definition of the hotel by c o n n e c t i n g t h e s u r ro u n d i n g area with the hotel, and the community with the guests. This is gently changing the air of the world,” said Kengo Kuma of his latest commission.

in 1990. He runs diverse research projects concerning architecture, urbanity and design within his own Laboratory, Kuma Lab.His firm, Kengo Kuma & Associates employs over 150 architects in Tokyo and Paris, designing projects of diverse type and scale throughout the world. Kuma’s stated goal is to recover the tradition of Japanese buildings and to reinterpret these traditions for the 21st century, he maintains a keen interest in the manipulation of light with nature through materiality.

ZHD, which is helmed creatively by co-Directors Maha Kutay and Woody Yao, has an extensive crossdisciplinary portfolio that includes fashion, jewellery, furniture and finishes, interiors, exhibitions, i n s t a l l a t i o n s , s c u l p t u re a n d set-design.

ZHD has come up with a collection whose strength lies in its ability to interpret the ordinary and turn it into something unexpected.

When designing objects Zaha was never constrained by any given use or spatial context. Continuing to follow and draw strength from this approach, the collection has room to evolve without compromising the integrity of the design.

The Plex Vessel in crystal glass has been envisaged as a multi-use object. The elegant wave-like gesture belies the complexity of its design which consists of two re-configurable elements. This light-hearted object can be stacked vertically, hiding its contents within or separated into parts that nest together to create a defined landscape across any surface.

Having assisted with the design of Zaha Hadid’s first limited edition product collaboration, she began to develop and manage the product design department. Collaborating with global luxury brands and galleries, Maha leads her team in the implementation of every project.

When speaking about the ZHD Collection - the own label of design objects launched by Hadid in 2014, Yao and Kutay explain, “ZHD also operates the Zaha Hadid Gallery in London, UK which examines her work across all scales and which is host to temporary exhibitions featuring emerging designers, as well as a venue for product launches, lectures, and performances rooted in contemporary culture.”

Woody Yao, joined Zaha Hadid Architects in 1994. As well as working on projects, Woody has been instrumental in the development of the Archive and the growth of the Exhibitions program as he currently curates several shows a year and leads his team in design and execution.

verriding the extremes of stiff pragmatism and poorly devised idiosyncrasies in furniture design, StudioWorks, an Ahmedabad-based furniture studio, strives to achieve a balanced exploration of form, function and materials in their collections. The studio displays insightful adaptation of the materials, astute understanding of the function, and a thrilling passion for innovative design.

Here, Nehal Bhatt tells The Inside Track, ‘comfort is primary to furniture design since it is the most tangible’, and hence their exploration and study revolves around function first, followed by material and design.

After a short stint at interior work in Surat, I moved to Ahmedabad and started practice as an interior designer. I was offered a teaching position in CEPT and taught as a full time faculty from 2005 to 2012.

I set up the workshop in 2012.

Tell us about the story behind inception of StudioWorks.

Your collections are sensibly designed and celebrate the beauty of craftsmanship. Is there a conscious though behind customising and developing all your products?

With the desire to achieve excellence in everything we made, we decided to set up a workshop to design, experiment and develop our own furniture and interior products.

Would you briefly tell us about your background and training?

I graduated as an interior designer from the School of Design, CEPT, Ahmedabad in 2000. As a part of the course, I did my internship with Anish Shah Designs, Mumbai.

There is an astute sense of structure, ergonomics along with striking aesthetics showcased in your work; how do you incorporate these factors seamlessly in your work?

Our outlook to materials is very pragmatic. We believe that good design can only evolve from a clear understanding of materials. We strive to use a material meaningfully.

We attempt to bring elements from different materials, together in an evocative manner. This is realised through details of construction.

We believe that comfort is primary to furniture design since it is the most tangible and so each product goes through a rigorous routine of prototyping before it is put into production. A lot of these decisions are guided by intuition but based on experience over a period of time.

Take us through the manufacturing process. Are the objects handcrafted in your studio workshop or machine-made?

The wood working processes such as cutting, sizing and shaping are machine done since it saves time and replication is accurate. But the fine skills of craftwork, joineries and assembling are completely hand done. We believe in doing most work in-house so as to have complete control over the process and finishes. In case of craftwork, it gives us an opportunity to work directly with the craftsmen.

At StudioWorks we indulge in design in more ways than one. We primarily design and develop our own range of furniture. Besides, we also take up projects with designing and productions. In cases like

What are the materials you essentially work with? Any plans to explore new materials?

We work predominantly with wood and metal in combination with other materials. We look forward to working with stone and concrete as and when the opportunity arises.

Does StudioWorks take any special measure to counter environmental deterioration?

We believe in responsible design.

We use only reclaimed teakwood for all our furniture work. All the wood we buy is locally sourced so as to engage minimal transport.

Besides, all our wood coating is natural, oil-based materials.

What are you currently working on and any plans to expand your work portfolio in future?

What role does India’s extensive craft heritage and craftsmanship play in your own signature style?

In India, we are fortunate to have ingenious craftsmen using local materials and age old techniques.

We take it as an opportunity to integrate these in our design solutions. We try to understand the techniques of a craft so that we may seamlessly apply it in our designs. We believe that it is our responsibility as designers to integrate crafts into mainstream

We are working in collaboration with some interesting design firms.

Besides, we are also working on developing some seating ideas for residential spaces. We are in the process of developing furniture with ceramic art. In due course of time, we plan to develop a range of furniture for kids.

Where can people buy your products: in store/on-line/directly from you?

The hot water is then guided from the wall connection directly to the thermostat cartridge and the mixed water from the thermostat cartridge then passes through the back and bottom sections towards the right and on to the shutoff/diverter valve.

The SafetyStop at the Ecostat E thermostat handle also prevents an unexpected increase in water temperature and eliminates the danger of an excessively hot shower.

Founded as the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, the school was renamed in 2017 after it formally broke away from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

The event witnessed an insightful seminar and panel discussion on ‘Archaeology of the Future’. On the panel was also keynote speaker Ar. Tsuyoshi Tane, a globally celebrated contemporary architect.

An intellectual dialogue conceptualized by Ar. Tsuyoshi Ta n e ’s w o r k a n t h o l o g y o n Archaeology of the Future focused on the forgotten memory hidden behind modernization and globalization. In his address, Ar. Measuring 21 meters high by 30 meters long, the portals were developed over the

The three portals - whose installation was completed in December 2019 will be complemented by a different entry plaza with themed flora and features to further welcome visitors.
