I really like the rational aspect of how things work and I started out by studying mathematics, physics and biology, however, I come from a very artistic family, my grandfather used to be a renowned artist, these were the two dimensions to me; I wanted to do something that could

help me enjoy both aspects. The way I have approached design till now is exactly like that, there is a very strong focus on understanding the needs of people, the context, the environment and of course the more emotional aspect. It is a balance of emotional and practical aspects. It is really about looking at insights, it is not about what we ‘can do’, but more about what we ‘should do’. This is the culture of my team and me. continued on page 3

continued from page 2 Is there a design ethos that is common amongst the large brand portfolio of Lixil? There is one strong focus, and that is the ‘user’. We have a very strong user-centricity concept. We are here not only to give shape to products but to strategise. Design is an integrated part of the company. Everything we do across brands, across businesses is about addressing ‘real needs’. The great thing about Lixil is that as we bring different brands under one umbrella, it is forcing us to differentiate ourselves. It pushes us to focus on the true identity of each brand and look at principles of ‘human architecture’. We are reinforcing the identity of each brand. Because of the wide variety of brands we have we always do a “sensecheck” where we become much clearer in terms of the evolution of each individual brand. There is a “sameness” to product design that is often visible in the marketplace. How do you overcome this challenge? One thing very unique with Lixil is that because we have a variety of brands under one umbrella, it helps us to be more clearer. Today you see a greater differentiation. Design needs to start from what the brand is trying to achieve, what are the challenges they

How sensitive is product design to the culture and context of a place? How does Lixil offer specific solutions for specific countries? We spend a great deal of time taking on insights from different markets. It is very important for us to understand different cultural aspects.

Today advances in technology can be attributed to creating improved “functionality” of products. What have been some of the recent technologies Lixil has offered its consumers? Talking about a recent technology that we have leveraged across b r a n d s i s t h e “ Pu s h Va l v e” technology, this has created a new way to interact with products. The Push - Turn - Control feature in one unit has created a breakthrough in how people operate shower products. By simplifying the interaction process we are able to create an improved user experience. This has been a technology that has created one of the biggest impacts in the industry in recent times. Processes and materials used to make products in the building space often have a very negative eco-footprint. Is there an effort to use more sustainable materials and processes?

Delivering Japan’s rituals of water that make everyday life easier, healthier, and more enjoyable, INAX products enable wellbeing

want to overcome - the technology used might be the same, however, the benefits you provide to your consumers are different. Within Lixil each brand is now playing a different role.

We are going to release some products in the very near future which are culturally very specific. They target specific users. It is all about addressing real life challenges and issues.

In our factories we are constantly improving and refining our formulae and recipes to ensure sustainability. We also examine the ‘quantity’ of materials we are using in our products. The recent launch of “Genie” by the American Standard brand is one such product where we reduce the number of pieces and simplify the manufacturing and assembling process. We will soon launch a very interesting family of products which will significantly reduce the quantity of materials used yet provide many additional benefits.

Specific to the Tostem, what do you believe is the USP of the product that will make it successful in the Indian marketplace? The pre-engineered aspect of Tostem makes it a very interesting product. We control the quality, we offer flexibility and there are a lot of benefits for the developers. Also, from a user perspective the pre-fabricated aspects of the system ensures far superior quality which results in better durability for our customers. We use light weight materials made with exacting Japanese processes and standards. How connected are you with Indian culture and what do you believe defines Indian culture and design? Early adoption of things. When I visit India I am always amazed to see the energy of how things are moving so fast. Faster than other parts of the world. India is a young country and when it comes to new technology it fascinates me how quickly she adopt these technologies. Contact web: www.lixil.com

tudio Chisel, a Hyderabadbased furniture and industrial d e s i g n s t u d i o , f o re g o e s stereotypes with happy colours and playful designs by exploring materials and development processes. Their furniture line is strong on aesthetics yet eminently user-efficient. Aditya Somway, one of the co-founders, provided The Inside Track insights into their young design practice. While explaining about the studio’s name, he says, “We call ourselves Chisel because the things that we make with, make us.”

Studio Chisel Studio Chisel celebrates the process of object-making and crafts unusual yet appealing furniture pieces.

Tell us about the inception and intent behind Studio Chisel. Studio Chisel was set up in 2016 as a design service provider for the furniture industry. We provide design consultation and manufacturing services purely focussing on furniture.

Handcrafted at Studio Chisel’s worskshop, Soikea series was inspired by Scandivanian design

Would you briefly tell us about your background and training?

Aditya Somway, co-founder, Studio Chisel

I have a masters in furniture design from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad and have in the past worked for a design studio in Germany as well as various furniture manufacturers in India.

Soikea series is an ode to traditional carpentry and weaving

Te l l u s a b o u t t h e e n t i r e scope of work undertaken by Studio Chisel.

While making a product functional and technically sound is of utmost importance to us, we also want each of our products to convey an emotion. Its this emotional connection that works for us. Be it the playfulness of the Mez and Animals series or the laid-back sense of calm that the Soikea series brings.

Studio Chisel offers furniture design consultation with the ability to prototype and manufacture in small batches. We work with interior designers, architects and also a few companies to design, prototype and eventually manufacture. We’re always developing our own line of products which are always exploratory in nature.

Your portfolio is suggestively contemporary in nature; in future, would you like to adopt our country’s extensive craft heritage and blend it with your own signature style?

While Animals and Mez appear to be quite playful and quirky, Filet and Soikea represent elegance. Tell us about the inspiration behind these furniture pieces. At Chisel, the process of making always influences the final outcome. The Animals series is the result of experimentation with metal folding- in essence origami with metal- it was only natural that the form convey the same playfulness.

7

Crafts and traditional processes fascinate us. Its something we’d definitely like to explore in the near future. Any particular craft or material that you would like to explore in future? We are experimenting with simple crafts like wood-turning and carving, crafts that are not limited to a geographical location. There are talented persons found in every city who don’t usually get a chance to explore the full potential of their craft or processes. Its avenues like this that we wish to explore.

Elegant chair from Soikea series

What are you currently working on and any plan to expand your work portfolio in future? We’re working with a number of architects, designers and manufacturers as furniture consultants, helping them develop ranges of furniture and products. For the studio’s own range, we’re always experimenting without a very clearly defined mandate. Most of what we end up making is what we have fun doing. Where can people buy your products: in-store/online/directly from you? Currently Chisel Products can be bought at the Room Therapy Store in Hyderabad and directly from us. We’re not selling online just yet. Contact email: hello@studiochisel.com web: www.studiochisel.com

Filet series explores techniques of wood carpentry

The Soikea series is an ode to traditional carpentr y and weaving, processes that are meticulous, precise and have their own elegance. The form for the products is our interpretation of these crafts. Your furniture collections are sensibly crafted and celebrate the spirit of creation. Is there a conscious thought behind the development of each creation?

For us, every product is the outcome of exploring a process, and trying to enjoy the journey. Take us through the manufacturing process. Are the objects handcrafted in your studio workshop or machine-made? Most of Chisel’s products are made in house using traditional as well as modern manufacturing techniques.

Some products are conceived to harness a particular machines capabilities, while others rely purely on craft. There is a marked evolution in how design is perceived in India. Today, the end-user acknowledges the importance of both ergonomics and aesthetics while purchasing furniture. However, is it difficult to convince clients to experiment a little and ditch the conventional path?

hen pursuits involve great drive and passion it leaves behind a legacy that can be traced back with immense pride. In 1920’s the Indian rebellion against imported goods escalated and inspired influencers to channelise the swadeshi spirit in the right direction. Fired by this energy, Pheroze Sidhwa and Rustom Sidhwa started Bharat Floorings and Tiles to overthrow the then popular Minton tiles. From its exceptional debut at Sir H C Jehangir’s Readymoney Mansion at Flora Fountain, in 1923 to current day - where the company’s artisanal tiles grace several restaurants and restoration projects across India - the company has evolved into one of the most renowned names in the design industry. Paving the Way, an exhibition held at Chatterjee & Lal Art Gallery in South Mumbai provides access to archival material that commemorates not just the legacy of Bharat Floorings and Tiles (BFT) but also recounts the crucial role floorings played in the reshaping of architecture in Mumbai.

The displays at this 4-day exhibition enumerate the milestones and the evolution of the company, and are presented through five modules Tapestry in Cement, The ‘Moderne’ Home, Commercial Elegance, Floors To Your Taste and Heritage Renaissance. The exhibition primarily focuses on Mumbai while chronicling the story of the early days of this Swasdeshi enterprise, and how it moulded itself to reflect changing tastes and trends of the times. The information has been sourced from past patrons, few rare exhibits from BFT archives have been handpicked, and documents of hallmark structures have been exclusively procured for the exhibition. The exhibition space opens with Tapestry in Cement, which retells stories of the radical ambition of BFT to produce affordable superior quality cement tiles that had helped in exponentially limiting the import of Minton tiles. It takes you through the initial commissions undertaken by the company this is represented through filed photos, tile samples and 3-D laser cut screens that comprehensibly depict the structure’s façade and the tile pattern.

of these artisanal tiles and it led to a market that chose to custom-design patterned tiles from Bharat Floorings. Floors To Your Taste takes you through the history of the ubiquitous Bombay Bungalow and cites commissions that specially required bespoke tiles. With several restoration projects underway in Mumbai currently, Bharat Floorings and Tiles collaborates with several conservation architects to recreate the exact same charm of the heritage tiles. The most recent example being the Keneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue which was restored by conservation architect, Abha Narain Lambah. The art gallery space hosts several rare archival pieces that weave together an interesting narrative of this homegrown enterprise. The slightly bruised pages of glass-encased old catalogues point towards the format of practical listings. As opposed to the current trend of eclectic names, the tiles then were denoted by pattern numbers. An audio clip of the founder’s d a u g h t e r ’s e v o c a t i v e p o e m revisiting her first impressions of the flooring in her room, vintage photographs, newspaper cuttings, personal notes of the founder, old company ledgers, and undisclosed tile documentation from Karachi together builds an interesting discourse that provides a nuanced understanding of the flooring history of Mumbai. A simple stroll through this insightful unique exhibition ascertains that you are unlikely to ever ignore the floor that you walk on. The exhibition is set to conclude with a heritage walk across the Fort Heritage Precinct and a panel discussion on the last day of the exhibition. Contact email: info@bharatfloorings.com web: www.bharatfloorings.com

A Piet Mondrian like in-situ grid floor laid at Dhanraj Mahal, Apollo Bunder in 1935

With the advent of the Art Deco movement in 1930s following the Victorian, neo-classical fashioned buildings, Bharat Floorings and Tiles swiftly caught on with the trending style and provided customised geometric Art Deco tiles for several projects that included several homes. The ‘Moderne’ Home section displays the use of the then favoured palette of terracotta red, green and yellow terrazzo tiles.

The Vice Chairman of Bharat Floorings and Tiles, Firdaus Variava, shares, “Prior to computational visualisation, consultants collaborated and functioned mostly on the grounds of trust. Hence, we often didn’t just provide tiles but also designed floorings for commissioned works.” Commercial Elegance display shows how BFT responded to the changing status of erstwhile Bombay to a financial capital of the country.

With new schemes, development of various important sectors like banking, and establishment of several company headquarters, designing a befitting elegant flooring for the subtle interiors became a requisite. The company switched to using marble in combination with plain cement tiles to complement the sophistication of these stately structures. Even the opulence of marble couldn’t dull the charm

Supported by the Ministry of Culture, The Craft Project is an initiative by Cocoa and Jasmine, an independent cultural publication that documents tangible anthropology. BY NATALIE PEDDER-BAJAJ Their first event in Delhi, takes place on the 27 April at 5pm at the Indira Gandhi National Centre of Arts and will include a panel discussion that will explore the importance of craft documentation and why design inter vention is important to represent contemporary Indian aesthetics at a global platform. The panelists include Purnima Rai of the Delhi Crafts Council and Crafts Council of India, as well as Ritu Sethi of the Crafts Revival Trust and will be moderated by the Founder of Cocoa and Jasmine, Sayali Goyal.

Being a digital and print magazine and also a creative studio, they have published stories on primary research from major textile regions in India. For this, they have travelled to Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Maheshwar, Varanasi, Ladakh and Jaipur to document crafts like natural dyeing, Kalamkari, Kantha, block printing, Jamdani, Pashmina, brocade and Maheshwari weaving. To translate this research into a physical space, they have created a series of events in different cities in India and abroad that will bring a community together to take this dialogue ahead. The event will comprise of a textile installation, a photo exhibit, display of their printed journals and a panel discussion.

“Various installation curated by me,” says Sayali Goyal, “have been inspired by my travels to different textile regions in India. I was always fascinated with the workshops and homes of dyers, embroiders and weavers. Some of these workshops had loose white fabric hung for natural bleaching and this experience evoked almost a spiritual feeling and I wanted to translate this experience for the viewer.” A common string in most textile crafts of India is white fabric, a blank canvas. Through this project, Sayali also wishes to showcase the unity of our craftsmen yet bring out the diversity in textures. “When a weaver weaves fabric, a little bit of himself is woven into it as well, thus each fabric displayed here holds the artisan’s emotions as if the artisan was present. If you look carefully at these fabrics, they are all different and unique and have an individual soul yet we can appreciate them as one, just like Indian crafts,” explains Sayali. White fabrics have also been sourced from different parts of India through makers, designers and organisations who work with artisan clusters. Some of these are lamb’s wool from Jigmat Couture from Ladakh, Pashmina from Lena Ladakh, cotton silk from Looms to Luxury Varanasi,

ight from its inception in the year 2010, it was clear that it was all going to be about building more than just beautiful, shared office spaces. WeWork wanted to build a community. Places you join as an individual, ‘me’, and subsequently become part of a greater ‘we’. Places where it is possible to redefine success measured by personal fulfillment and not just the bottom line. Community is the catalyst, deems WeWork. WeWork entered the Indian market in 2017 and two years later, it is successfully reimagining the concept of shared workspaces in three key markets - Bangalore, Delhi-NCR and Mumbai. From catering to 2200 members in the WeWork Galaxy July 2017, WeWork today has over 25,000 members across India. One of the strongest USP’s of WeWork is that it is much more than a co-working space. It offers a physical and digital experience that connects each individual member to its over 400,000 global member community along with spaces that have a global design but a local outlook.

WeWork

The American company WeWork not only provides shared work spaces across the globe, but also believes in creating a world where people can work to make a life, not just a living. BY MALA BAJAJ

This lounge area is omnipresent in all locations of WeWork, designed strategically to provide a space for members to meet, connect and collaborate

This is one of the host desk areas with view of the brightly coloured and well lit lounge. Members can pick their choice of places for work and collaboration with other WeWork members

This is one of the pantry areas besides the nook. The space is open to everyone at WeWork to get a cuppa or use the utensils for their meal

Purva Pavilion, Wework’s newest member is located on Church Street in Bangalore, Karnataka, one of the busiest streets in central Bangalore. Considering the poor condition of the building and low ceiling heights, designing this building was extremely challenging. The entire building was redesigned to make the space feel as fresh as possible in spite of its constraints. Apart from the challenges, the building still had abundant potential, which was used to the fullest by the designer. A grand space, the building had a unique circular atrium that flooded the interior with natural light. Inspired by the Guggenheim, it was important to take the existing architecture of the building into consideration to retain the authenticity of its character. The atrium being the core of the building now highlights the main lounge and makes it an eccentric space for members to gather in. The curves and odd angles of the building were cleverly utilised to create cosy seating arrangements. While the space’s color palette is kept neutral, pops of color appear in the furniture and artwork. olkata based architect Abin Chaudhuri showcased a magnificent example of ‘adaptive reuse’ at the recent Roca ThinkTurf knowledge series in Gurgaon. In the small village of Bansberia, on the outskirts of Kolkata, Abin infused new life into an existing structure as well as the mundane peri-urban landscape with his provocative architecture. The project brief for the ‘House of Sweeping Shadows’ was to reimagine and develop an existing residence into a lounge and recreation space. The instructions were simple, complete freedom of design provided the structure was retained. In this project, Abin deviated from the use of concrete and created a ventilated metal envelope that attached itself to the old building. All the details were meticulously carried out in the studio with no inputs from a structural engineer. The firm also engaged with the local masons and craftsman to deliver details of a very exacting nature. Using steel, a new facade (bamboo inspired) was woven on to the original concrete shell, allowing natural light to create dramatic shadows that dance across the floor and walls inside. The striations in this screen (which are inspired from traditional Bengali homes) is what facilitates natural cooling, while the large rectangular punctuations connect the building to the rural landscape surrounding it. The two floors are connected with a MS steel folded-plate staircase which is supported by stringer beam, connecting the spa facilities on the lower level to the entertainment space and washrooms above. This semi-circular structure overlooks a swimming pool, gazebo, jacuzzi, and aviary.

The interiors were given a simple treatment with whitewashed walls and contemporary furniture minimally scattered over a bright red epoxy floor. The brick-lined pond that was part of the ‘old’ layout was ultimately converted into a swimming pool while the new building accommodates a gym, changing rooms and guest lounges with a commanding view of the pool and lawns. Within a fe w years, Abin foresees his steel fascade covered in creepers, completely changing the character of the home, tethering it even more firmly to the landscape beyond. Abin Chaudhuri presented a keynote sharing with the audience a vivid picture of this project in Bansberia as well as his other efforts in revitalising this periurban area with his thoughtful architectural interventions at the Roca Think Turf evening hosted in Delhi.
