espite his often rigid profession, the forty three year old Bjarke Ingels is not necessarily known for his subtleties and his online persona reflects this irony. Recently having celebrated his birthday, his cheeky grin reflects in a post on Instagram where he received love and wishes from thousands of fawning audience. This characteristic reflects onto his playful and risky designs that have resulted in some spectacular structures around the world and subsequently resulted in a colossal success of his firm, BIG. (Bjarke Ingels Group) With a rather fat bank of numerous landmark projects situated all over the world, he has constantly evolved from project to project, finding solutions to the varying demands of particular clients and sites without imposing his own aesthetic dogma. The Danish architect is omnipresent in Copenhagen despite the fact that he has done fewer projects there in comparison to other cities all over the globe. One can be sitting in one of his structures that quite possibly would overlook another - this could easily happen!

One such project we are going to talk about at The Inside Track today is the Amager Resource Center – a waste-to-energy plant located in an industrial area that over the years has turned into an extreme sport destination for thrill seekers. Different extreme sports activities take place in the raw industrial facilities such as cable wakeboarding, go-kart racing and rock climbing among others. The Amager Resource Center is the most significant landmark in the area and the building was in need of renewal. BIG proposed a new breed of a waste-to-energy plant; one that is economically, environmentally, and socially profitable. continued on page 2

continued from page 1 Instead of considering Amager Resource Center as an isolated object, BIG mobilized the architecture and intensified the relationship between the building and the city - expanding the existing activities in the area by turning the roof of the new Amager Resource Center into a ski slope. Referencing traditional architecture inside and out, ARC is unlike any other structure on this planet.

The billowing ARC, or Copenhill as the locals call it, is a tree-filled ski slope and hiking area to be open year-round which will zag down its façade and one side of the building will feature a 278-foot-high artificial climbing wall. continued from page 2 It’s also practically the opposite of another structure called Noma, an experiential restaurant that is across the boundaries of vision. Both designed by BIG and overlooking each other demonstrates the diversity of the talented architect. The new plant establishes Amager Resource Center as an innovator on an urban scale, redefining the relationship between the waste plant and the city. It will be both; an iconic and integrated destination in itself, and a reflection on the progressive vision of the company. Masterplanned by BIG, the rooftop park atop the Amager waste-to-energy plant will host hiking trails in addition to the climbing wall as well as a 600 meters long slope that is accessed by an elevator adjacent to the smokestack. The elevator has a glass wall facing the interior of the plant allowing recreational buffs and sightseers to have a glimpse into the internal workings. The roof isn’t only going to function as a ski slope but as on a real mountain with green areas, it will facilitate hike trails, climbing walls and maybe even a bike trail. In addition to these activities, there will be a viewing plateau and a café. The building is gently wrapped with a continuous façade made out of stacked aluminium bricks. The openings between the bricks allow a cascade of daylight into the deep process hall and the administration space.

The rooftop park atop the Amager waste-to-energy plant will host hiking trails in addition to the climbing wall as well as a 600 meters long slope

The plant provides low carbon electricity to 550,000 people and district heating to 150,000 households and is possibly the most energy efficient plant in the world with 107 percent energy efficiency. This plant is an international showcase of how to combine today’s technology to achieve high energy efficiency. Over the years, waste-to-energy plants are becoming more and more useful for climate control and environmental wellness in general. The plant provides low carbon electricity to 550,000 people and district heating to 150,000 households and is possibly the most energy efficient plant in the world

2010 marked the beginning of the construction of the Amager Resource Centre and over the years, despite being incomplete, has already won numerous accolade as well as the Progressive Architecture Awards citation and the 2012 AR MIPIM Future Projects Special Award. Practically a celebrity in the architecture world and with offices in Copenhagen and New York,

Ingels has been named ‘Innovator of the year’ by Wall Street as well. With a larger than life persona, incredibly superfluous media maneuvering skills, his visually jarring architecture and the sheer size of his portfolio, Bjarke Ingels is reshaping architecture one building at a time as we know it. A simple modification to the smokestack only allows it to puff one ring of smoke when one ton of fossil CO2 is released serving as a gentle reminder

These bricks on the façade function as planters creating a green façade and giving the look of a green mountain with a white top from afar. A simple modification to the smokestack only allows it to puff one ring of smoke when one ton of fossil CO2 is released serving as a gentle reminder of impact of consumption. At night, heat tracking can be used to position laser light onto these smoke rings where the light source is placed on the smoke ring generator itself.

Fulfilling the technical as well as societal requirements, the plant gives back something more to Copenhagen than just an energy efficient plant. Benefiting the citizens of city, ARC provides cheaper and more sustainable electricity, district heating and recycled materials for at least the next 20 years and at the same time, they get to enjoy the view from the top in an exhilarating experience.

heer luxury is what comes to mind when one thinks of Louis Vuitton. Sleek and exclusive, the brand has always maintained its standard, neither dropping their quality nor price.

Each of the slats have a curved edge detail so that when placed side-by-side, they form wave-like indents across the stair

When building the LMVH (Louis Vuitton Moet Henessy Business Company & Firm) headquarters in their mother town, it was imperative that the offices exuded the class of the brand. Just as a Louis Vuitton product is would stand out, the chosen French designer, Ora Ïto has conjured up a half-snake staircase design to act as a focal point for LMHV media section’s new offices in Paris to stand out. Hundreds of wooden slats have been cut and placed together to form this gargantuan centerpiece at the venue. The staircase snakes up the four storeys of the office, comprising of over 400 wooden battens that cradle the underside of the stair and form the handrails on either side. Each of the slats have a curved edge detail so that when placed side-by-side; they form wave-like indents across the stair.

These semi-circular indents on the inner side of the slats form a nook for the steel handrail, while LED lights illuminate the undersides of the treads. A large hidden steel beam supports the slats, which is made of a mix of extremely light materials. Two layers of medium density fibreboard (MDF) are placed on either side of a metal reinforcement and then covered in the French oak veneer to match the oak steps. Lit by a huge glass wall and a roof light, the staircase is set to one side of the building, leaving plenty of open space around it. The office design is deliberately calm and minimal so that the staircase can stand out as the one statement feature. bamboo, Ananda House is a fine example of the synergistic relationship between our planet and human endeavor. BY NEERJA KAPADIA

erived from the Sanskrit term, ‘Ananda’, which means pure bliss, this unequalled private residence is a tranquil bamboo paradise, a culmination of a journey that began centuries ago. Utilizing the ingenuine craft of skilled artisans, Bone, a Balinese village hosts traditional bamboo homes along with a diverse range of household good and handicrafts. Marking the entrance, a stone gateway frames three black palms surrounded by a lush landscape that carpets the land. A stone pathway carves the way along the mounds of the landscape eventually leading one towards the two delicate multi-level structures emerging from atop the slope. The leaf shaped roofs descend in a curve sweeping low around the sides under which, cleverly, glass has been slapped on which reflects the green of the garden. These are the private bedrooms which have private balconies at the front.

The living room deck and pool is where family life revolves, with the bedrooms situated above and the river below. In the living space to the south is a secluded area of the deck and beyond it, a little powder room. It also has an upper and lower bedroom, each room with its own private balcony and bathroom. The bed faces tall glass windows toward the balcony and the north-eastern views beyond. At the highest level of all is perched a tiny tower room, accessed by a ladder and through a trap door. Replacing the usual nailing methods, hundreds of thousands of bamboo pegs were whittled one by one on site to join the surfaces. Continuing unusual methods, only handmade techniques have been adopted as opposed to mechanical ones. Envisioned by Elora Hardy, founder at Ibuku, a pioneering architectural firm that specialises in bamboo architecture, the Ananda house is a fine example which reinstates belief in an eco-friendly form of work that is also ultra luxe. Winding down the pathway between these two structures, one discovers a teardrop shaped open pavilion that has a sweeping leafshaped roof that peaks upwards. This is the family room, the heart of the house, and in its center, is the kitchen with a curving counter top made from flat slabs of river stone. At the back of the pavilion, above and behind the kitchen area, is a high loft for the children. The deck sweeps around the north side of the family pavilion towards the grotto pool. There is a dialogue between the inside and outside that is beautifully helmed into one entity without harshly separating the two.

he ‘City Spirit: Contemporary Public Design Archives Exhibition’ was held on September 19th 2018 in Rose Garden Art Center, Beijing, China. Showcasing exhibitors from a variety of countries around the world, they used the creative and humane care of public design projects to demonstrate the significant effects of design intervention in urban governance.

Rohan Chavan of RC Architects

The exhibition was divided into six sections: public space design, public facilities design, urban renewal, community design, public service design and thirty urban public design projects full of humanity presenting the ‘urban spirit’ driven by design to the public.

about his experiences and projects in the Contemporary Public Design Archives exhibition in China.

The ‘City Spirit: Contemporary Public Design Archives Exhibition’ was held on September 19th 2018 in Rose Garden Art Center, Beijing, China

The common feature of these projects is that they not only do some urban beautification and decoration projects but also carry out profound thinking at the moment when the relationship between people and cities is becoming a growing urgency.

He further delved deeper into three projectsout of which one was Toilet in a Courtyard - bathroom projects in courtyards

They are committed to providing design solutions to solve complex social problems. The exhibition was held based on the long-term research on the public design of Chinese cities by members of the Art Design and Research Center of the Communication University of China.

It is not only a demonstration of academic research but also a lively on-the-spot teaching, focusing on urban issues and c o m m i t m e n t . Te a c h e r s a n d students who promote urban public design provide a platform for interactive communication.

THE INSIDE TRACK November 2018

T h e h o s t , Pr o f e s s o r Wu Xuefu welcomed the audience and introduced all the prolific personalities present there including the curators and guests. This event has been marked as the key project for the 2018 Beijing International Design Week Design Tour and for the first time the archives of thirty world-class urban public design projects world over have been displayed. It is worth mentioning that the exhibition adopted a pragmatic and innovative way of exhibiting using recycled urban building water pipes to make display racks and had an industrial style coordinating with the old factory exhibition hall. All exhibit materials could be loaded and unloaded and was suitable for transport to different locations for display. In addition to the exhibitions, the editorial department of China Communication Design organized speeches from vital personalities from all over the world out of which one of them was our very own Rohan Chavan from RC Architects in India.

He explained that in extreme climatic conditions, people designed open spaces with courtyards, verandas and pavilions as areas to deal with harsh weather repercussions

One of his projects was names Pause - Stop Space, a public toilet that is different

He chose his topic ‘Micro’ and explained his choice by mentioning his connection to a hot climatic living environment where relationships among people are primarily space based. He further delved deeper into three projects namely, The Lightbox - public toilets for women, Toilet in a Courtyard - bathroom projects in courtyards and Pause -‘Stop Space’, a public toilet that is different. All of these were inspired from his personal experiences and how he decided to create these spaces as an attempt to prove that man’s constant intervention with natural conditions and his strive to protect and adapt to domestic living conditions renders positive results.

9

The nature of architecture and its relationship to the immediate and broader context was the key highlight of his theme and consequently, his speech. Continuing, he explained that in extreme climatic conditions, people designed open spaces with courtyards, verandas and pavilions as areas to deal with harsh weather repercussions. These components shaped an important typology in dealing with the climate and proved successful to create a microclimate that lets one to dwell in extreme conditions. A coagulation of such conditions is termed as “micro climate”, which means that the climate of a very small or restricted area differs from the climate of the surrounding areas.

His talk then focussed on spaces in neighbourhoods and cities that are domestic, friendly and societal in nature. Such spaces that organically bring people together and create comfortable conditions where one interacts with the other at ease and essentially creates a space for friendship, was the essence of the topic, ‘Social innovation and Urban design.’ Concluding his speech, he quoted Charles Correa, stating, “We are only as big as the questions we address. And this is the central riveting fact of life of architects in the third world. Not the size or value of the projects that we are working on, but the nature of the questions they raise - and which we must confront - A chance to grow-the abiding virtue of place in the sun.” Contact web: www.rcarchitects.in

pioneer in the bathroom s e g m e n t , Do r n b r a c h t’s Mr. Parind A. Sarmalkar, Director- Sales & Marketing, delves into their company genesis and a detailed description with The Inside Track;

Family Ties

There will always be a ‘Dornbracht’ to communicate within this family-owned world renowned company.

Mr. Parind A. Sarmalkar, DirectorSales & Marketing, Dornbracht

What has been the genesis of your company and brand? Dornbracht Group is an international family-owned company with German roots and over sixty years of experience and expertise in the sanitary industry. Aloys F Dornbracht GMBH & Co was founded in year 1950 in Germany by Mr. Aloys F Dornbracht & his son. Dornbracht is now the only family-run company among the major players in the industry, and this is noticeable in the good relations it enjoys with market partners, suppliers, specialist retailers and tradespeople. What are some of the new and popular innovations that your company has made in the bathroom products segment? Dornbracht has always been an innovator in the bath industry. Eight years back, we conceptualized and launched electronic showering concepts enabling a spa experience in your own personal space at home. Some of our most popular products are, Sensory Sky, Aquamoon, Horizontal Shower, Vertical Shower, Comfort Shower, eUnit Shower and Foot Bath. What are the challenges when providing bathroom products to the Indian market? The Indian market has huge potential for us. The Indian premium consumer is well travelled, aware of our brand and also more than willing to use the technology in her bathroom. We work with a 5 P’s Usp; Precision, Proportion, Progressiveness, Personality and Performance.

Vertical Showers are part of the electronic showering concept launch and enhance as well as create an exhilerating shower experience

Renowned architects & designers worldwide and in India prefer specifying Dornbracht for their premium consumers for these attributes. Do you have an after sales service in place? Pre and Post sales are highly critical aspects. Dornbracht has a well laid technical process which enables ease of installation and prompts after sales support for its consumers. We don’t only have our own well trained people in every market but also local plumbers and installers to ensure quality of installation and service.

What do you feel could be the future trends in this segment?

What steps have you taken towards sustainability?

As more and more Indian consumers are travelling and getting in touch with new technology and offerings in international markets, the demand for the same is increasing at a rapid pace locally as well. At Dornbracht, our focus is more on ensuring wellbeing of the consumer through our offerings. As technology starts playing an important role in every part of house, IoT becomes the key and Dornbracht eSolutions are well poised to lead the way in bathroom and kitchen spaces.

We don‘t see sustainability only in an ecological context. As familyrun company we are aware of our responsibility to the society, to the company location and to the family. Our products are made from 100% recyclable materials like steel and brass taken from and returned to the material cycle. Our complex air filtration system in the surface finishing area extracts the abrasive dust and forwards it for recycling. Dornbracht is the only brand manufacturer in the world to switch its entire product range of wash basin and kitchen faucets into lead-free materials according to Proposition 65 (USA), one of the world’s strictest drinking water legislation. he word peace is as commonly used as uncommonly achieved. In a chaotic world where everything and everyone is on a deadline, under stress and dealing with unnecessary animosities, an artist has craftily used art to bridge the divide between North & South Korea as a small part of a larger project also initiated by him called The Dream Project. Choi Jae-Eun, the said artist who aspires to use architecture and design to make this peace has created the Condensation Pavilion. This is a pavilion that is made of its own environment; the wind, the fog and the forest, which are drawn together creating a tranquil space. It engages directly with the cycles of the surroundings, collecting the fog that occurs naturally on site and condensing it into a spiraling stream that flows onto a passing river and disappears into the sea.

The project envisions a series of open-air ‘Jung Ja’ meditation pavilions built of and in the dematerialized zone and connected by a pedestrian bridge elevated above thousands of landmines below. Made from entwined strands of bamboo, each ring frames a shimmering sheet of fabric mesh designed to capture moisture from the fog. The water droplets that form on the mesh are then channeled into a small stream that flows from the center of the pavilion, coiling outwards until it reaches the Imjin River which divides North & South Korea. Walking is a central act to the pavilion’s design. The structure is conceived to follow the shifting perspectives of a journey along the path through the landscape rather than being a single static point.

The pavilion materializes and evolves with the movement of the people walking along the bridge. Advancing from both directions, pedestrians reach a point where the seemingly scattered distribution of rings suddenly coheres into a symmetrical pattern - a harmonic vision shared by visitors from both ends. The Condensation Pavilion is one such space that has ambitions of the greater good. Collaborating with international architects such as Shigeru Ban and Studio Mumbai who have utilized the weather changes to trigger this process of fog harvesting, the structure remains a masterpiece and paving way as an inspiration for budding do-gooders in the design world. rchitecture, despite all its creativity and grandeur, comes with its challenges ever y now and then. Michel Rojkind, founder of Rojkind Arquitectos, along with his team takes on this challenge head on and emerges victorious in his quest with the completion of The Nestle Chocolate Museum located on the side of the highway at the entrance to Toluca, Mexico. Half way between Mathias Goeritz’s ‘The Snake’ and Edvard Munch’s ‘Scream,’ this zigzagging origami rises from the garden level and becomes the entrance to a magical world - to the tour of the chocolate factory that rivals Tim Burton’s imagination. Tantalizing the complexities of architecture, this now 600 sq. meter building is a stark contrast to its original ship which was a 300 meters long mundane façade. The new construction boasts of a reception, a theatre, entry and exit tunnels and gadget stores which are all pivotal to the chocolate tour process.

ot very often in this age of mass-produced & automated technology do you find a brand that purely delves into exploring traditional techniques of exquisite design creations. Rooshad Shroff is a multi-disciplinary design and research studio. Founded in June 2011 in Mumbai by Rooshad Shroff, the architectural practice predominantly dedicated to the realization of spaces soon developed its own design department, operating at nano-scalecrafting bespoke furniture, products and materials.

Us i n g t r a d i t i o n a l I n d i a n techniques and making it a point of honour to re-actualize the handmade, it has become a reference within the design world for highly sophisticated pieces. The practice, albeit only 5 years, has garnered the level of acclaim and recognition that usually takes years of experience and presence in the market.

Come, Take A Seat The embroidered collection by Rooshad Shroff features a series of wooden furniture used as a canvas for needle work. BY VANDANA KRISHNAN Using traditional Indian techniques and making it a point of honour to re-actualize the handmade, it has become a reference within the design world for highly sophisticated pieces

The embroidered collection by Rooshad Shroff sees an amalgamation of two distinct crafts - carpentry and embroidery. The furniture predominantly is made up of recycled old Burma teakwood that has been procured from old broken down buildings. The intricate work seen on the chairs mirror the meticulous efforts of the craftsmen and the kind of formidable talent they portray through the collection. The collection features a series of chairs, sofas, tables and dividing screens that make a promise to take you on an excursion that mingles modern silhouettes with traditional craftsmanship. Talking in detail, cotton threads of varying colours are laced through what makes up the seat of the chair using a grid of holes, forming various patterns, shapes and designs in order to communicate a perfectly choreographed design language through the entire collection. While the threads used for embroidery are colour fastened to ensure they don’t fade over time and lose their visual appeal, the wood is coated with a natural polish to emphasize and retain its natural beauty and texture.
