EGG-CELLENT Easter egg hunts 15,000 eggs were hidden at Beaufort Academy & Hunting Island State Park

About 150 kids brought their families to Hunting Island Sate Park on Saturday, March 31 for the annual Easter Egg Hunt in the shadow of the iconic lighthouse. Bundled up against the morning chill, children competed in a coloring contest and got to sit on the Easter Bunny’s lap. For the main event, the kids lined up behind the tape according to age and on the word “GO” — off they went and gathered up all 1,000 eggs in about five minutes.

More than 1,200 kids were pre-registered for the inaugural Great Community Helicopter Egg Drop and many more showed up at Beaufort Academy on Saturday, March 31. “We dropped 14,000 plastic eggs in four separate drops,” said event organizer Jonolyn Ferrier of Beaufort Academy. “We can’t tell how many kids finally showed up”, she said. “This is huge.” Inside two of the gold eggs was free tuition to Beaufort Academy for one year.

A crewman from Hilton Head Helicopter Tours dumps some of the 14,000 plastic eggs during the Great Community Helicopter Egg Drop at Beaufort Academy. To keep things fair, four separate drops were made for four different age groups, with a limit of 10 eggs per person.

Before taking the field, take steps to keep your eyes safe Houston Astros, Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies have suffered serious eye injuries. Potential eye injuries from baseball include: • corneal abrasion; • orbital fracture; • hyphema, which can lead to glaucoma; • ruptured eyeball; • cataract; and • detached retina. People often think that wearing their regular eyeglasses or sunglasses offer some protection from a baseball hit, but this is false. The truth is that non-protective eyewear can shatter upon impact, causing more damage to your eye. Before taking the field, take the proper steps to keep your eyes safe: • If you wear prescription glasses or contact lenses, ask your eye doctor about prescription protective sports eyewear. There are certified helmets with attached safety glasses for baseball batters and base runners; fielders can get certified protective eyewear. • Sports safety glasses must meet American Society for

By Dr. Mark Siegel

For many kids and adults, the return of spring means it’s time to gather up bats, gloves and helmets and head for the baseball diamond. But too many people forget to include an important piece of gear: protective eyewear. According to the National Eye Insti- Dr. Mark Siegel tute, baseball is a leading cause of eye injuries among children 14 years old and younger who play sports in the U.S. In fact, eye injuries are the leading cause of blindness in children, accounting for an estimated 100,000 emergency room and doctor visits each year. It’s a fact that nine out of 10 kids who have suffered an eye injury could have prevented it just by wearing proper eye protection. Unfortunately, many youth and adult sports leagues do not require players to wear protective eyewear. Even Major League baseball players aren’t required to wear eye protection. Yet, reports of eye injuries in the big leagues show they aren’t immune to the devastating effects of a flying baseball or bat. In just the past seasons, players from the

Eyewear designed to meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) industrial standards does not meet the safety standards for sports eye protection. • All prescription sports glasses should be made from polycarbonate material because it resists shattering and provides UV (ultraviolet light) protection. If the protective lenses have turned yellow over time, have them replaced, as the polycarbonate material may have weakened with age. • Sports goggles provide the best eye protection. However, they may not fit narrow faces well. In this case, the best option is certified sports glasses with 3-millimeter-thick polycarbonate lenses. • Any player who has vision loss in one eye should always wear eye doctor-recommended protective eyewear to protect their remaining vision. ataw Island Adopt-A-Highway volunteers were recognized at the 2018 Annual Meeting of the South Carolina Litter Association for their longstanding contributions to help keep Beaufort County clean, more welcoming and enjoyable for all. Presentation of the plaque signifying the award was made by Paul Somerville, Beaufort County Council chairman, to Dataw Island representatives Bill and Carol Carpenter, Neville Patterson, and General Manager Ted Bartlett. Although Patterson was one of the representatives present Dataw Island Adopt-A-Highway volunteers hard at work. to accept the award, he credits the dedication of their full team with earning the recognition. “The Dataw volunteers, over the last quarter century, along with the Dataw Landscaping Department, earned this 2017 award," said Patterson. “The 11 teams out on the road every month picking up litter earned the award, and their efforts continue to merit thanks and support from us all.” The plaque explains that the Dataw volunteers’ efforts represent the best in “The Lower Region” of the state, which includes the 15 coastal and coastal plain counties. It states: “Presented to Dataw Island Volunteers for your outstanding leadership to the cause of litter awareness, enforcement and pick-up programs in South Carolina.” The Dataw Adopt-A-Highway Program began in 1993. Now in its 25th year, there are currently there are more than 60 resident volunteers who donate about an hour each month to pick up litter on Highway 21. The 11 Dataw teams clean the roadsides of this highway from Airport Road on Lady’s Island to east of Folly Road on St. Helena Island. The Dataw Island Landscape Department also cleans Polowana Road. Just 10 weeks into the year, the teams have already collected more than 100 bags of trash.

Community Foundation to make $3 million investment PLACE-BASED IMPACT FUND LAUNCHES APRIL 9TH

Coastal Community Foundation (CCF), a philanthropic organization serving nine counties across coastal South Carolina, is launching a competitive initiative to invest up to $3 million in regional projects focused on positive community outcomes. Known as Place-Based Impact Investing, the strategy combines the traditional investment practice of earning financial returns with an intentional emphasis on social returns. CCF is one of the few community foundations in the Southeast to employ a place-based impact initiative as part of its overall organizational strategic framework. “We know a focused, intentional effort must be placed on impact investing if we’re ever going to create sustainable solutions to coastal South Carolina’s most pervasive problems,” said Darrin Goss, Sr., President and CEO of the Foundation. “The CCF Board of Directors voted in February 2017 to dedicate capital for an impact investment program. Research into the trends and best practices of place-based impact investing has led us to this pivotal moment. We are proud to say we’re making a substantial initial investment of $3 million.” “Foundations are by nature instruments of social change. Traditionally, that change has been made through grantmaking,” said Christa Divis, CCF Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer. “Today, we are enhancing our capacity to make change.” Because investments for impact are made intentionally, and with a goal to achieve a social outcome along with a financial return,

they more wholly represent CCF’s mission and mindset. “Impact investing aligns both sides of the house—earning a monetary return while doing good,” added Divis. CCF is launching the first investment portfolio under the new initiative with the intention to launch future portfolio investments. Loans, loan guarantees, and/or equity investments for projects seeking between $50,000 and $600,000 in capital will be chosen from a pool of qualified applicants from across the Foundation’s nine-county footprint. Projects must illustrate the promise of both social and financial returns, and preference will be given to projects focused on one of the following three themes: • Access to economic opportunity • Education • Affordable places and inclusive spaces How to Learn More and Apply CCF will hold an information session Monday, April 9th at 9 a.m. in its downtown Charleston office located at 635 Rutledge Avenue, Suite 201. The information session will cover expectations for returns (both social and financial), types of projects, size of investments, and the application process. Organizations with projects in process or launching within the next six months and seeking capital are invited to attend and find out more about the initiative and timeline. The session is free and open to the public, but space is limited. Please RSVP by emailing rsvp@coastalcommunityfoundation.org. If you are unable to attend but would like to learn more, please contact us at (843) 7233635.

ARTS THE MET OPERA LIVE IN HD AT USCB CENTER FOR THE ARTS

Outstanding cast to perform Verdi’s “Luisa Miller” By Alan Schuster

If you like opera but are not familiar with ‘Luisa Miller’, Giuseppe Verdi has a nice surprise for you. On Saturday, April 14, 12:30, at the Center for the Performing Arts, soprano Sondra Yoncheva [La Boheme’s ‘Mimi’ three weeks ago] will sing the title role, opposite tenor Piotr Beczala – and the highly esteemed Placido Domingo as her father. Many consider Luisa as one of the most lovable Verdi operas. British music critic Charles Osborne defined it as “a pivotal work for Verdi which was considered to be a confident assertion of the composer’s complete independence from the past...and the general widening of his expressive range of feeling.” Only four years later, Rigoletto, Il Trovatore and La Traviata had already reached European stages with enormous success! Luisa’s story is filled with intrigue, due mostly to many plot shifts. Some examples below, including Verdi’s chosen sub-titles. ACT I: Love: Luisa is in love with Carlo who is actually Rodolfo, the son of Count Walter. The couple proclaim everlasting fidelity, but her father, Miller, is dubious of him. His fears are confirmed when Wurm, the Count’s steward, also in love with Luisa and hoping to marry her, reveals Rodolfo's true identity. Wurm tells Walter of Rodolfo's love for Luisa, who then resolves to end their

relationship, planning to have his son marry the widowed duchess, Federica. Left alone with Federica, Rodolfo tells her that he loves another. At home, Miller tells Luisa that Rodolfo has deceived her and is about to marry the duchess. Rodolfo, however, comes to plead his sincerity. When Walter enters, threatening to arrest Luisa and her father, Rodolfo secures their freedom by threatening to reveal how his father, with Wurm’s assistance, murdered his cousin to gain his present title. ACT II: Intrigue: Luisa learns that her father has been jailed. Wurm informs her that the only way she can save him is to write a letter admitting she sought Rodolfo for his wealth, and then pledging herself to Wurm. After doing his bidding, she learns she must go to the castle and proclaim her love for him before the duchess. Wurm shows Luisa's letter to Walter, and they plot to show it to Rodolfo. With threats by Wurm and Walter against her father, Luisa states her love for Wurm to Federica. Rodolfo receives Luisa's letter, and is about to attack Wurm when Walter appears and persuades him that marrying Federica will be the best way for him to avenge Luisa's treachery. ACT III: Poison: Miller, released from prison, comforts his daughter and they agree to leave the village the next day. As Luisa prays, Rodolfo enters and pours poison into

a decanter, and then confronts her with the letter. When she cannot deny she wrote it, Rodolfo asks her to pour him a drink. When he says it tastes bitter, she swallows some too. Rodolfo tells Luisa the cup was poisoned, and she, released from her vow, now tells him the truth. Miller arrives and comforts his daughter. Peasants enter with Walter and Wurm. And as Luisa dies in her father’s arms, Rodolfo, with his final breath, stabs the Wurm to death. Miller highlights Act I: “T’amo d’amor ch’esprimere” (I love you, as words express…), a joyful duet for Rodolfo and Luisa, building up to a superb ensemble as the villagers enter church in double time. “Dall’aule raggianti” (From a radiant classroom…), another fine duet for Rodolfo, this time with Federica, as they recall happy days in school, but the ending intensifies when he tells her that he loves another. “Fra mortali” (Among mortals still oppressed…), a grand finale as each character sings out their personal feelings, ending with an overwhelming chorus of sympathy for Luisa’s despair. Act II: “Tu puniscimi, o Signore” (Forgive me, o Lord…), back-to-back solos for Luisa, first protesting against signing the letter, then to a riveting cabaletta with an outburst of hatred against Wurm. Very expressive. “Quando le sere” (When the evening’s pale

Christ Is Risen! Our greatest reason for joy Good Friday was a disaster. Earlier in the week, all had been going as the apostles expected. As Jesus entered Jerusalem for the Passover celebrations, the crowds had cheered him as a king: “Hosanna to the Son of David!” (Matt 21:9) But now everything was turned upside down. Jesus had been arrested and executed, and they had abandoned their friend in his time of need. Their hearts were filled with grief, shame, and doubt. Was Jesus not who he claimed to be? He had claimed to be divine, and he had worked many miracles to support this claim: casting out demons, healing the sick, and even raising the dead! But now he had been crucified on a hill outside of the city, the mocking inscription “King of the Jews” above his head. Had they been wrong about him? Had their faith in him been misplaced?

Everything changed on Sunday. Terrified of being arrested, the apostles had been hiding behind locked doors. We can imagine their astonishment when, on Sunday afternoon, Jesus suddenly appeared in the room with them! He was no longer dead; he was alive! He spoke to them with love and encouragement. He reassured them that he was real, not a ghost: “Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.” (Luke 24:39) For forty days, Jesus appeared often in this way and prepared his followers for their coming mission. The apostles rejoiced! Their sorrow had turned into the greatest joy! And almost two thousand years later, the resurrection of Jesus is still our greatest reason for joy. It means that Jesus really is who he claimed to be! He is not a lunatic, nor a liar, but truly the Lord. Everything he taught and revealed is true. God is real; heaven exists; eternal joy is possible. Christ’s victory is our victory! The resurrection of Jesus means that the crucifixion was not his defeat, but actually his moment of victory! Jesus has conquered sin and death. United with Christ, we too can share in the glory of his resurrection; death will not have the last word in our lives! Even in moments of sorrow and hardship, we too can exclaim with joy, “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? ...Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!” (1 Cor 15: 55-57)

MAGIC of FLIGHT

Two happy Young Eagles and one Eagle Dad.

By Wendy Nilsen Pollitzer

The Beaufort Aviation Association was created in 2017 by a group of Beaufort aircraft owners and pilots at the Beaufort County Airport. Jim Atkins, president of the association, explains, “The organization wanted to accomplish three things. We had a vision to share the magic of flight, maintain aviation safety at the airport and expand the economic contribution of aviation to the Beaufort community.” In addition to promoting the economic potential of Beaufort’s airport to the public, the Beaufort Aviation Association gives free airplane rides to interested teenagers and adults and works to shape the knowledge, information, proficiency and resources among association members. The group currently has partnerships with Beaufort High, Battery Creek High and Beaufort Academy to create new aviators; more than 50 teenagers have been given free flights in the last six months. Beaufort County Airport on Lady's Island routinely hosts 10-12 passenger single and twin-engine propeller and jet aircraft, Monday-Friday United Parcel Service flights, and contributed $12.5 million and 110 jobs in 2017 to Beaufort. The Beaufort Aviation Association wants to explore ways to enhance Beaufort’s airport further by determining the priorities of area business owners, educational institutions, and local government to create jobs, raise the median income, promote tourism and attract business prospects to Beaufort’s airport. In addition to Beaufort County’s approved upgrades, the association also recommends: constructing a more attractive and better equipped terminal for passengers and pilots; developing a welcoming website; linking the airport’s name to the

City of Beaufort, promoting to the traveling public, entrepreneurs and business owners through advertising; and endorsing the airport within the Beaufort community. Other enhancements could be building an aircraft and engine repair facility for visiting and residential aircraft, a medium sized aircraft storage hangar for visiting aircraft and small plane hangars to eliminate the five year waiting list. The association does not recommend a longer runway. The Beaufort County Department of Airports is responsible for the application of improvements and submission to County Council for approval. If approved, the Federal Aviation Administration would fund 90%, the state of South Carolina would fund 5% and Beaufort County Airport would fund 5% of the improvements. Private investment is essential to fund many of the enhancements, so a public-private partnership is envisioned, Atkins pointed out. Recently, Beaufort County approved a multi-million-dollar upgrade to Hilton Head Island’s airport, similar to this funding model. Beaufort Aviation Association supports County Council’s decision to recognize Hilton Head’s airfield as an asset to the county’s economic development and believes Beaufort’s airport has the potential to provide more value for the community North of the Broad while relieving air and surface traffic on Hilton Head. To generate revenue at Beaufort’s airport, these enhancements would increase the sale of fuel to hangar tenants and transient planes, recruit more aviation-related businesses, and could create an aviation education and training facility led jointly USCB and the Technical College of the Lowcountry. “Simply put, the BAA would like to see more pilots and

Dan Ahern and a happy Young Eagle. passengers flying into Beaufort for business, tourism and real estate-related travel. And we want business prospects to bring their businesses to Northern Beaufort County,” according to Atkins. The Beaufort Aviation Association will host a roundtable discussion on Thursday, April 5, to examine the potential economic contribution of Beaufort’s airport to Northern Beaufort County. Local leaders will voice their concerns and suggestions on ways to improve Beaufort’s airport. The discussion will be moderated by Don Sanders of the Beaufort Aviation Association, and the results will be submitted to the participating organizations for transmission to Beaufort County Council. Additionally, the BAA is hosting a Women in Aviation day to show the many career options in aviation on Saturday, May 12, from 9 a.m.- noon at Beaufort’s Airport on Lady’s Island. The event is open to the public.

The Jetsons are alive and well on planet Earth. I know this because I visited their home recently. Okay, George and Jane do not live there, but walking through the house it felt like Astro the dog was going to be running out to greet me at any moment. The house is the 2018 HGTV Smart Home located in Palmetto Bluff. This house is amazing and on April 17, at 9:00 a.m. the HGTV Smart Home Giveaway begins. I got a chance to tour the home recently with one of the HGTV tour guides. As she pointed out, the Smart Homes are in a class of their own. They are constructed with advanced technology, gadgets and smart solutions to enhance every day living. On top of that, the smart home is developed, designed, and constructed by local Low Country businesses. The developer was Palmetto Bluff Development; the Markalunas Architecture Group designed the house; Shoreline Construction completed the house construction. The beautiful interior was decorated by Tiffany Brooks the Interior Designer and eighth season HGTV star winner. Every aspect of the home was carefully planned by these people. The house is situated on a beautiful wooded lot and is approximately 2,850 square feet with three bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms. It is a true Southern style

home. One of the features you notice right away is the I-pad on the wall near the entryway. This is command central for the house where heat, air conditioning, lights and a multitude of other functions are available at your fingertips. The house is also built with energy-efficient materials along with clever storage solutions. There is a large sliding bookcase in an alcove at the top of the stairs which can be opened to reveal a game room. If I had one of those rooms, I would never see my grandson when he visited. The room has its own gaming system and Visual Reality headset. This house is one of those places that feels like a sanctuary. Every room is inviting, with each space carefully decorated to create a comfortable and airy atmosphere. Seems like the only thing missing is Rosie, the Jetson’s Robot maid. Maybe she will be a member of the 2019 Smart Home family. If you are interested in entering the contest, you can visit the website HGTV.com/Smart to find out all the details. The grand prize package is worth over $1.6 million and includes the house, the furnishings, a 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e Plug-In Hybrid and a $100,000 cash prize. Enter the contest beginning April 17th and maybe you can be the George and Jane Jetson of Palmetto Bluff.

USCB awarded grant for water monitoring USCB was awarded a Community Foundation of the Lowcountry grant for $63,775 to expand and enhance monitoring of the impacts of water quality and climate change on local, natural resources. This funding will enable Dr. Eric Montie, Associate Professor of Biology and director of the Marine Sensory and Neurobiology Lab and Lowcountry Dolphin Conservation at USCB to expand the research done by lab managers and lab assistants consisting of undergraduate students from USCB, interns from across the US and graduate students from the College of Charleston. The grant funds will go to purchasing scientific equipment and a boat with a trailer that allow the researchers the ability to monitor the impacts of water quality and climate change in the May River and the surrounding area. With these resources the lab can launch a long-term water quality program by collaborating with SCDHEC, the Towns of Bluffton and Hilton Head Island and SCDNR. This collaboration will allow the organizations to pair long-term datasets to identify changes in water quality and effects on natural resources. If poor water quality is detected, the team can work with local managers to adjust storm water runoff in order to dampen the effects of coastal development. Another desired outcome of the grant is to monitor fish spawning in collaboration with SCDNR. The data can be provided to fish managers so they can adjust regulations as needed. The local population of fish effects the community because many businesses rely on the population like local fishing guides. A bottlenose dolphin survey will be conducted in collaboration with NOAA. Through understanding their populations and health the health of Bluffton and Hilton Head Island estuaries can be deter-

Sometimes, it’s harder than we think to match some foods with some wines. Spicy foods, meaning heat spicy, are usually a challenge. The basic “rules” of food and wine pairing don’t, and can’t, apply. But despite all the intricacies of doing good pairings, the heat overpowers all. Flavors. Textures. Balances. This week, though, we have an option. Going back to the Loire Valley, near the town of Angers, there is a region called Anjou. (Yes, exactly like the pears. Remember, last week, we talked about the abundance of fruits and vegetables grown in the Loire. Guess where the pears originated!) Anjou is located to the west of Tour, in what is known as the “Middle Loire.” There are over 150 communes, or villages, that have vineyards that fall into Anjou appellation wines. And the wines of nearby Saumur, as well. In this appellation, all the grapes of the Loire Valley can be found, and all the styles of Loire wines - dry, demi-sec, doux and sparkling. From this area, wines made from Chenin Blanc date back to the 9th century. Almost as old, is the local habit of blending the juice from pressed grapes with free run juice, where just grapes press on each other. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Dutch traders introduced the production of sweet wines. Rotterdam was a large market for sweeter wines. The high point for wines from the Anjou area was in the 19th century when Parisians discovered these wines. But, shortly after this peak, phylloxera hit the Loire vineyards and they were basically destroyed. Today, even with vigorous replanting, the total acreage of vineyards is still less than half of what it was before phylloxera. There is one grape variety that is almost unique to Anjou wines. Particularly Anjou rosés. Grolleau. Or, more precisely Grolleau Noir. But, there are more than a dozen other names this variety goes by. Including Groslot. All its name are related to the French word for “crow,” “grolle.”

This is a red variety. It has a thin skin, a higher level of acidity, is high yielding, ripens well and relatively early. Its wines are generally lighter bodied. In Anjou, it is used to make exclusively rosé Celia Strong wines. The appellation is Rosé d’Anjou. Rosé d’Anjou wines are medium bodied, with crisp acidity and very fruity flavor profiles. They are made predominantly from Grolleau, blended with small amounts of Cabernet Franc or Cabernet Sauvignon or Gamay or some others. In the late 1980’s, the production of this rosé was nearly 55% of the total wine from Anjou. Our wine is from Sauvion. Founded in 1935, this is one of the oldest estates in the western end of the Loire Valley. (They are known as the “best-known Muscadet producer.”) Château de Cléray is the family home. From the fourth generation of the family, Pierre-Jean Sauvion, is the current winemaker. This Rosé d’Anjou is made from 70% Groslot and 30% Gamay. These grapes come from 30 year old vines that grow in schist and clay soil. Fermentation is done in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, after ten hours of maceration. (Lots of fruitiness in the finished wine from all those hours!) The wine is bursting with ripe strawberry and red currants aromas and flavors followed by herbal notes, including mint. It is medium to offdry and balanced with a delightful acidity and a dry finish. And what about spicy foods. One of the oddities of good pairings is hot spices pair well with very fruity almost sweet wines. That means all the spicy Thai dishes, Chinese mustard, Mexican foods, jalapeños and other peppers, curries of all colors. Yum! Rosé d’Anjou! For $12.99. Enjoy. Celia Strong works at Bill’s Liquor & Fine Wines on Lady’s Island.
