LOCAL CANCER CARE EXPANDS Partnership to relocate services to Beaufort Memorial Hospital campus
STORY AND PHOTOS BY BOB SOFALY
M
ore than 300 runners showed up for Beaufort Academy’s Fifth Annual Chilly Bean Run fundraiser on Coosaw Point on Lady’s Island on Saturday, Feb. 3 from South Carolina and Georgia for the certified 5K and 10K races. There were also fun races with pets involved, and the post-race party featured chili, live music and craft beer. A portion of this year’s race will also benefit CAPA in Beaufort.
Beaufort Memorial Hospital (BMH) is partnering with Alliance Oncology and the Medical University of South Carolina Health System (MUSC Health) to relocate and expand the Keyserling Cancer Center to the main hospital campus in late 2018. The new center will be located in the Beaufort Medical Plaza, the three-story medical office building next to the hospital. Radiation oncology and infusion services will be provided on the first floor, while medical oncology physicians Drs. Majd Chahin and Mark Newberry will be co-located on the third floor. The move will bring together the full array of lab, imaging and breast health services that support the cancer program. Construction is expected to begin next month.

At left: Michelle Hiers proudly displays her participation medal for finishing the run. Hiers said she completed her 5K run in 33 minutes.
Mandy Burgin, co-chairperson of the Fifth Annual Chilly Bean Run, makes sure there is plenty of bottled water and fresh fruit for the runners.
Lead guitarist Tim Devine, left, of the Machete Flats Blues Quartet picks a tune while the rest of the band — Steve Aldred, drums; Adam “Sushi” Graynade, bass; and Kirk Dempsey, guitar — joins in.

“Beaufort Memorial Hospital has been providing outstanding cancer care to the community for more than a decade,” says Russell Baxley, MHA, President and CEO of Beaufort Memorial Hospital. “Our new and expanded partnership with MUSC and Alliance Oncology will allow us to offer cutting-edge technology and resources locally, providing the latest in cancer care to our patients.” Last fall BMH officials announced that they would be moving the cancer center to a new location to consolidate and expand cancer services. The newly formed partnership provides both the capital investment and program development expertise required to expand and upgrade services to meet the growing needs of the Lowcountry. At the new Beaufort Memorial Keyserling Cancer Center, an MUSC clinical advisory committee will collaborate closely with local oncology experts and a dedicated clinical liaison will be onsite in the radiation oncology center. This expands upon the collaboration that was formed in 2016 when the cancer center began enrolling qualifying cancer patients in clinical trials through an affiliation with the National Cancer Institute-designated Hollings Cancer Center at MUSC.

Neighborhood Outreach Connection builds bonds with police department March Forth on March Fourth event PAT CONROY LITERARY CENTER
The Beaufort Police Department (BPD) has long been a supporter of the Neighborhood Outreach Connection (NOC) in the community. The relationship first started when the police and fire departments were invited to the inaugural Back-to-School event at Parkview in the summer of 2016. Prior to that, the interaction between the NOC and the BPD was mostly conversational, keeping abreast of the everyday situations at the Parkview Apartment housing complex and how they potentially impacted on the children and families resident there. Parkview — with its location next to the county detention facility, and socioeconomic status as affordable housing — had a reputation for being a tough neighborhood. Although the reputation has improved recently, the police maintain a strong presence in the neighborhood. It was recognized by both the NOC and BPD that a partnership could potentially benefit the children of Parkview, and subsequently the Marsh Pointe community. Beaufort NOC Program Manager determined that a good way to collaborate on this initiative would be to invite the police and fire departments to a family social event, that being the end-of-summer Back-to-School party. Both departments embraced the invitation and attended with numbers of personnel and equipment. The understanding being fostered is that the police and firemen

were truly interested in the well being of the residents in the community and not just present when there is an incident requiring their attention. This first party signified the start of several in which the BPD was present at an NOC-sponsored event. One BPD officer, Michael Phelan, took a particular interest in the NOC children and he took the lead role in developing a partnership program of outreach to the NOC communities. Over the past year, a positive relationship has been established in which police officers have been, and will continue, making regularly scheduled visits to the NOC’s Learning Centers. The officers foster a caring and attentive demeanor when they interact with the children and demonstrate

that they care about their health and safety. The officers focus on positive decision-making and pride in the children’s neighborhoods. Together, the groups have sponsored neighborhood clean-up days where the kids are rewarded for collecting and disposing of litter from common areas. Officer Phelan has also been of great assistance utilizing his contacts in the community — he recently was able to secure the donation of bounce castles at the Marsh Pointe Learning Center’s annual Christmas party, and the owner of the company offered to have the bounce castles return to Parkview for another event later this year. “Officer Mike” also visits whenever there is a recognition event for the students. A strong working relationship between the NOC and the local law enforcement team has resulted in positive benefits for both organizations. For the NOC, it provides the students with a sense of discipline and focus on their neighborhood environment and that the police truly care about their wellbeing of them and their families. For the police department, it provides an influential grassroots presence into local neighborhoods based on care and respect. This relationship has potential to be replicated throughout the NOC Learning Center communities, hopefully providing similarly positive results.
The Pat Conroy Literary Center will hold its second annual March Forth on March Fourth, commemorating the second anniversary of Pat’s death, on Sunday, March 4th, at the Frissell Community House at Penn Center on St. Helena Island. The Penn Center, a place of quiet dignity and rich history, is a perfect setting for the day-long embrace of nature, poetry, fiction, and fellowship among writers and readers in the heart of Conroy’s beloved Lowcountry. Founded in 1862 by Quaker missionaries and one of the first schools for freed slaves, Penn Center is nestled in the quiet majesty of the lowcountry, surrounded by live oaks and loblolly pines. The Frissell Community House, located on a sloped embankment at the Center, served as an important interracial gathering place for leaders of the Civil Rights movement in the 1960’s. It was a place familiar and dear to Pat, not only for what it embodied and protected, but also in a more intimate way from his days as a high school student at Beaufort High. Pat first visited the Center in October, 1960 with Gene Norris, his English teacher, and later met Martin Luther King Jr, Julian Bond, and other prominent civil rights leaders there. Pat, in a speech that he gave at Penn Center in 2010 said, “I watched my whole country change because of meetings that had taken place at Penn Center.” And now Penn Center also serves as a gracious gatekeeper to the cemetery where Pat is buried. March Forth on March Fourth will feature National Book Award-winning poet Nikky Finney, two-time Lillian Smith Award-winning novelist Anthony Grooms, master naturalist and memoirist J. Drew Lanham, poet and retired teacher Tim Conroy, and best-selling novelist Cassandra King Conroy. Registration is $22 for all-day admission with an optional $18 for a catered box lunch by Debbi Covington. There are three menu options available online. Lunch reservations need to be made by noon, Thursday, March 1st. Register online at patconroyliterarycenter.org.

Saying good-bye
I
lost a friend last week. She was my next-door neighbor and a member of The Greatest Generation. We had only known each other for about four years, but we had a lot in common even though there was an age difference. In fact, she was more of a contemporary to me than some people my own age. There is an old saying, “Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold.” The “gold” friends are the ones who know everything about you and have lived some of those life experiences. But the “silver” friends are in the discovery phase; everything you say is fresh to them and all the old stories are new, having never been heard before. I was her silver friend, but she had many gold friends too. Family and friends who had known her story for years. But the experiences in life are viewed differently as you grow older and shared with a new friend. She was able to understand that new perspective. Regardless, we were old souls together. We loved drinking Pouilly-Fuisse wine and telling our own version of our lives. I cannot tell you specifically what we talked about. The conversations were just easy. You know the kind of friend I am talking about here. Those people who make you feel comfortable and light up when they see you, and vice versa. People who know you well enough to understand your joys and sorrows. I remember when Bailey, my cocker spaniel, died last year, it was she who sent a beautiful hand-written note that read: “I know he is irreplaceable and I send my condolences to all of you.” People who

She touched our hearts. Last year, I taught her how to Skype. She had a blast. We sat there like two teenagers, “Now who should we call?” I texted my son and told him to answer a Skype call from her. “Why hello!” he said. Then we tried calling her son. What fun! I talked to her about Facetime too and how easy it was for me to keep in touch with kids and grandkids. I was in the Bahamas when I heard about her death. At noon, when the bells of Saint James Methodist Church rung in Hopetown, I thought about her. She and I both shared a belief in God and the afterlife. And I said a prayer of thanks to God for allowing this woman into my life. And so, Sally, I expect, when it is my time, you will have that bottle of Pouilly-Fuisse chilled and waiting for me. I hope to have many more conversations with you and please say hello to Bailey.

A true story that continues to inspire By Kat Walsh
She was perhaps America’s first famous first-name doctor. Dr. Ruth Westheimer began her career in radio in 1984 and soon rose to fame as a sex therapist on the television show “Ask Dr. Ruth” Even today, at a sprightly 89 years of age, she is still giving out advice on love and loving to her 90,000 Twitter followers. Few, however, are aware of the incredible journey that preceded her fame. Both women say that learned so much from doing the play – about the lives of refugees, orphaned children and the historical experience of the Jewish people that is heartbreaking. Since Larson and Radonsky joined creative forces, Becoming Dr. Ruth has been performed twice, both times as fundraisers. The first performance took place last October at Beaufort County Disabilities and Special Needs. The second performance took place last weekend, February 3 at the Unitarian Universalist Church. As the play begins, Dr. Ruth is leaving her Washington Heights apartment after 36 years. As she packs her books and memorabilia, she tells the story of her life to the audience. Certain photos that bring up memories are enlarged on an upstage video screen — the mother and father she lost to a concentration camp, her as a 12 year old with her classmates in Switzerland, even her dancing with President Bill Clinton and meeting Paul McCartney. “Life is always very interesting,” she says early in the play. “We don’t know who we are if we don’t remember who we were.”
The University of South Carolina Beaufort has scheduled a broad series of cultural events to commemorate African History Month in February, including a candlelight vigil and screening of a documentary on the Orangeburg Massacre, Feb. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Hargray lobby in Bluffton. All events are free and open to the public. African American History Month at USCB is intended to accomplish three objectives, according to Najmah Thomas, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Social Sciences at USCB. “There is a three-part purpose to the month,” she says: “To raise awareness of African American history in general, to acknowledge the importance of African American contributions to the country, and to encourage further study and application of lessons learned from the African American experience for all Americans. “Cross-cultural awareness is valuable to everybody because it doesn’t matter what your discipline is, it doesn’t matter what your program focus is, it is valuable for you to be comfortable with culturally distinct individuals. “What we’re trying to do,” Dr. Thomas adds, “is highlight the fact that even though it’s from the African American perspective, the month is for everybody. The lessons are for everybody. There are so many things that can be used from the African American historical perspective for everybody’s personal and professional development.” The planning committee that organized the 2018 African American History Month agenda drew from a wide range of perspectives in selecting the events. Serving on the committee were: • Laura Bessent, Student Development • Brian Canada, Ph.D., Computational Science • Ron Erdel, Ph.D., Computational Science • Lynne Hutchison, DNP, FNP-BC, Nursing and Health Professions • Joleesa Johnson, Student Development • Randy Lamkin, Ph.D., Sociology • J. Brent Morris, Ph.D., Humanities • Brandon Wright, Student Development Dr. Thomas serves as chairperson of the planning committee and as the faculty member for African American Studies.

SCHOOLS WHALE BRANCH EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL
Groundbreaking ceremony held for gym, arts center School officials, students and community members today celebrated the beginning of construction on a new performing arts center and a new competition gymnasium at Whale Branch Early College High School. Speakers included Board of Education Chair Earl Campbell and Beaufort County Councilman Gerald Dawson, who represent parents and community members in the high school’s attendance zone. “We’re very excited,” said Principal Mona Lise Dickson. “This is a great day for the entire community because all of our students
– not just high school students but also elementary and middle school students – will benefit from these new facilities.” Since Whale Branch Early College High opened in 2011, its four basketball teams have practiced and played their interscholastic games in one small gymnasium, leading to practices that lasted well into the night. Wrestling matches were also held in that gym, leading to shortened or cancelled basketball practices. Today Whale Branch is the only high school in Beaufort County that doesn’t have a competition and a practice gym.
Whale Branch also is the only district high school that does not have a performing arts-style auditorium for student performances and classes. Parents and community supporters had urged the district to build the addition since the high school opened six years ago. Sophomore Xavier Pierce, who made several appearances at Board of Education meetings to advocate for the new facilities, was particularly excited at today’s ceremony. “It took a whole community coming together to make this happen,” Pierce said.
“The outcome of this will be great.” Superintendent Jeff Moss stressed the long-term positive impact of the additions. “What will be built here will be a brickand-mortar building,” Moss said. “But what will ultimately make it successful will be the students and educators who work here every day.” District officials said their goal is to open the new competition gymnasium before the end of the 2018 basketball season and its accompanying playoffs. They hope to open the performing arts center in spring 2019.
Student athletes meet academic requirements Nearly all Beaufort County School District student athletes in fall and winter sports for the current school year met the district’s academic participation requirements. Ninety-seven percent of Beaufort County’s high school student athletes and 95 percent of middle school student athletes maintained their academic eligibility by meeting the district’s minimum 2.0 GPA participation requirement. Beaufort County is one of only two South Carolina districts that require a 2.0 minimum (a C average) to participate on athletics teams. Of 1,068 high school athletes in the district, 1,031 met the academ-
ic requirement during the first two academic quarters and 37 did not. Of 486 middle school athletes, 461 met the requirement and 25 did not. The overall district-wide GPA for high school student athletes for the first two academic quarters of the 2017-18 academic year was 4.07. The overall district-wide GPA for middle school student athletes for the first two academic quarters of the 2017-18 academic year was 3.56. “Beaufort County decided several years ago to raise the bar for our student athletes, and they have responded in terrific fashion,” said Superintendent Jeff Moss. “They
High school cross country, golf, swimming, tennis and volleyball teams all maintained GPAs higher than 4.0.
have absolutely met the challenge set by the Board of Education, and they have ensured that they will continue to succeed after they leave high school and possibly pursue college scholarships.” High school cross country, golf, swimming, tennis and volleyball teams all maintained GPAs higher than 4.0. Middle school volleyball teams maintained a GPA higher than 4.0. Districtwide, 275 middle school
athletes were honored as Academic All-Stars for earning GPA’s higher than 3.5 (essentially a B-plus average) for the first two quarters. At the high school level, 894 student athletes were honored as Academic All-Stars for the first two quarters. After a series of community forums in 2011, the Board of Education approved the 2.0 GPA requirement for athletes. Only one other South Carolina district (Richland District 1 in Columbia) has a simi-
lar requirement. Chief Auxiliary Services Officer Gregory McCord said that the district’s middle and high schools have after-school tutorial programs to assist students who are in danger of falling below the 2.0 requirement. Interim reports, report card grades, teacher/sponsor recommendations and coaching staff requirements are used to identify students required to attend after-school programs. McCord said that schools pay special attention to communicating the rules to student athletes and their parents. The South Carolina High School League’s statewide minimum GPA requirement is 1.0.
SCHOOL BRIEFS School calendar for 2018-19 approved
The Beaufort County Board of Education has approved the district’s academic calendar for the 2018-19 school year. The first day for students will be Monday, August 20, 2018, and the final day of classes will be Friday, May 31, 2019. The 2018-19 calendar includes a two-week winter break, a preference indicated by parents and district employees in online surveys last year. Current state law mandates that no South Carolina public school can begin classes prior to the third Monday in August, which this year is August 20. Various staff development days are dispersed throughout the calendar, and three possible weather make-up
are included: Wednesday, Nov. 21; Monday, June 3; and Tuesday, June 4. Holiday dates with schools closed for students are Sept. 3 (Labor Day); Nov. 6 (Election Day) Nov. 21-23 (Thanksgiving); Dec. 24-Jan. 8, 2019 (winter break); Jan. 21, 2019 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day); February 21, 2019 (teacher work day); April 15-19, 2019 (spring break); and May 27, 2019 (Memorial Day).
