Carteret Street losing its bubbles The Mark of stamps is shutting her doors

JANUARY 22-28, 2015

WHAT’S INSIDE?

By Wendy Nilsen Pollitzer anet Mark, a lifelong Beaufortonian and owner of Carolina Stamper, will be closing her business doors. She opened her business, affectionately known in Beaufort as “where the bubbles blow,” in 1998. Thousands of creative patrons have enjoyed her array of stamps, scrapbook materials, beads and more as well as the ongoing classes that Carolina Stamper offered. Recently Mark lost her mother, Rose Mark, and the transition without her has been an eye opening period. “I’ve decided stop and smell the ‘Roses’ while I can still sniff. I am very proud of the business that Carolina Stamper has become, and I know that could not have happened without my loyal customers,” explains Mark. “But as they say, all good things must come to an end.” Carolina Stamper has marked all inventory down. Gradually, as inventory depletes, items will be given larger discounts. She will close the doors when the inventory is gone.Mark is calling this her retirement sale. Her friends

and customers acknowledge the positive transition, but are still saddened by one of Beaufort’s staple businesses shutting its doors. I am one of those customers. Janet, I wish you peace and happiness with your future plans. Thank you for giving us a place to call home where we learned to give our own homes a little more personality and a little bit of you.

continued from page 1 as pretty cool southern chicks. Their two “tapercize” dance classes each week have proven to be both physically and mentally stimulating. They have found this to be the best method of staying young in mind, body, and attitude. Today in 2015, they have 9 members ranging from the ages of 66 – 81 with an average age of 72. They are currently dancing under the direction of Aleisia Ashlaw of Beaufort Academy of Dance. They have performed with “Tap City”, productions at the Beaufort Performing Arts Center, several military tributes, the Beaufort Memorial Hospital Day of Dance, and The Hen Party both here in Beaufort and in the historic Newberry Opera House in Newberry, South Carolina. They began competing in 2011 and have won seven first place trophies as well as special costume and entertainment awards. They are the DTI National Dance adult champions wining the Judges Choice Elite Award, First Place Adult Dance, and the Level One Overall Entertainment Award. They never imagined that they would ever earn the title of “National Champion” at their age! Last spring they won the Encore Dance Competition in Statesboro, Georgia in their age category with a perfect score bringing home the High Score of the Day Trophy and The “Most Entertaining” Award. They will be competing in the South Carolina National Dance Championships in two weeks and are hoping to win another national title. In addition to fulfilling their Rockette dreams, they surely never thought they would be performing in tights at their age. Even more amazing is the fact that, even though they would never normally say this to each other at their age, they all wish they will “break a leg” at every performance! Their grandchildren are not quite sure about watching Grandma on Youtube but the Beaufortettes are excited about becoming part of the digital age. You are never too old to achieve your dreams. For more information, please contact dance captain, Janet Gregory at janetgregory@islc.net or (843) 271-8717.

Beaufort Art Association introduces painter Paul Frederick to the artistic community. Paul, a recent transplant from Upstate South Carolina, is a realistic representational landscape artist. He will be the Featured Artist at the Beaufort Art Association Gallery from February 1 through March 28. Paul’s work is a reflection of the emotion he feels when he experiences the beauty of our environment. Though he has a fine arts degree from Ohio State University, his current work is an accumulation of discovery. His paintings are the result of an ever expanding process of learning a ‘vocabulary’ that allows him to translate his emotional response into a compelling landscape scene. Paul is very fortunate to have grown up in a family that had a great appreciation for nature and the outdoors. He gives credit to his father for planting the seed to paint. He exposed Paul to the beauty of the American countryside. Their vacations involved packing the family station wagon with a pop-up trailer in tow and heading out to experience the unique wonders of nature and geology that each state had to offer. They would travel across the country camping at state parks along the way. From Cadillac Mountain in Maine to the Grand Tetons at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and everything in between. They would visit national parks where Paul would absorb the beauty of the landscape. He found it fascinating to see how unique each state could be. The Badlands of the Dakotas, the expanse of the Plains in the Midwest, the rise of the Rocky Mountains, the depths of the Grand Canyon; all were breathtaking. He would record as many of these scenes as he could with his camera with the intention of painting them when I got home. As Paul became a serious student of art, he was captivated by the Hudson River School artists. Their depictions of landscapes reminded him of his own feelings when I visited those same national parks throughout his youth. The Hudson River School artists shaped his ideas on how to translate what he saw and felt into his paintings. One of the traits of the Hudson River School influence that Paul adopted was the use of darker valued foregrounds that gave way to brightly lit points of interest and sunlit mountainous backgrounds. They used trees and vegetation to frame the focus of a painting. As he learned more about the artists and what influenced them, he discovered the work of the romantic artist,

John Constable, who is considered a master of painting the sky. “The sky is the source of light in nature and it governs everything, proclaimed Constable”. Paul has always loved the immense nature of the sky and the formations of clouds. Constable believed the sky was “the keynote; the standard of scale and the chief organ of sentiment, in a landscape painting.” Paul has been a South Carolinian for the past twenty five years residing in the Upstate. The foothills of the Piedmont region of the Blue Ridge mountains, along with the many lakes in the area, gave him great sources of inspiration. Every day Paul was surrounded by rolling farmland with mountains in the background and massive skies. One of the lessons he took from the Hudson River school, and Constable, was adding some trace amounts of yellow and earth tones to my rendering of clouds. It gives them volume and form.“I found clouds were more convincing in a painting if I ‘dirtied’ them up a little.” remarked Paul. During his years living in the Lake Hartwell area he made several trips to Beaufort to visit his parents who had retired to Beaufort in the middle 80’s. Paul loved the live oaks dripping with Spanish moss and the tropical feel of the palm trees.......so different from where he lived. While visiting the Lowcountry, Paul always took pictures of images for future paintings. In June of 2014 Paul was very fortunate to be able to relocate to Beaufort. Finding a studio to work full-time from was essential. Upon visiting galleries on First Friday in May of 2014, he found an open studio/ gallery space available at Atelier on Bay and is an active member of that wonderful group of local artists. Atelier has afforded Paul the opportunity to paint full-time and display his work. At the same time, I joined Beaufort Art Association, to gain added exposure. Paul admits he has been a member of various art associations over the years, but never encountered a gallery setting like BAA. He feels it is unique among art associations and strong in talented exhibiting artists. “I have found my home in Beaufort”. Paul’s Opening Reception will coordinate with next month’s First Friday, February 6th from 5:30 to 7:30. The public is encouraged to attend and meet Paul and learn more about his art. The work of 75 other member artists will be on display along with the opening of Beaufort Art Association’s new Brick Wall Gallery. Beaufort Art Association is at 913 Bay Street in Downtown Beaufort and is open from 10am -5pm weekdays and 12:30 - 4:30 on Sundays.

Members of Beaufort High’s mentoring club, Ladies First, were provided eyeopening information from Beaufort Police Department’s Stephanie Karafa. The subject of the program was “Criminal Domestic Violence; Warning Signs and What to Do if You are a Victim.” Officer Karafa shared this critical information with our students, important especially since South Carolina ranks second in the nation for the number

of domestic violence fatalities. Beaufort High’s Ladies First Club is comprised of staff members who serve as mentors to student members, providing a one-to-one relationship that supports a student through their high school years. Mentors check in on the girls regularly, especially when progress reports and report cards are issued. Monthly programs like this one help provide tools for success for members.

Why does it always happen? Now what?

By Lee Scott

Why does it always happen? I try to look nice when I leave the house…hair brushed, clean slacks, nice shirt. But there are those days, when we have been working on the house and my husband will say, “Can you run to Grayco for me? I leave the house wearing stained khakis, an old shirt covered with paint and my hair tied back, and then I pray that no one I know sees me. Of course, I see five people from my neighborhood…men looking like they stepped out of a GQ magazine and women with their hair done and manicured nails. “Not fair” my brain screams. “You are at a hardware store!” But it always seems to happen, doesn’t it. I call them “Gotcha moments,” those times when you are just not prepared to see people you know when you are a mess or the house is a mess. My husband and I had one

morning when we had been lying around just taking it easy. There were newspapers spread all over the floor, the kitchen sink filled with breakfast dishes; the dogs old chewed up toys spread all over the house, and the doorbell rang. It was a neighbor who had been out of town and I had collected their mail. Why can’t people ever show up at my house when it is spotless and I am wearing a nice outfit? Then there was the day when I was trying to get ready for a club

meeting. There were boxes of trash placed on the front porch; old broken Christmas ornaments, packing boxes and burned out Christmas lights that my husband was going to take to the convenience center. As I greeted people at the door and saw the trash still on the porch he said, “You do realize it is Wednesday, right?” The Convenience Center is closed. Now there is a new “gotcha moment.” Facetime and Skype! Video calls. I

discovered it the other morning after my husband said. “Good morning Phyllis Diller!” My hair was sticking up like the old comedian with her wild hair. I had on an old bathrobe and the phone rang. It was my seven year old granddaughter calling on Facetime. Video Calls. Now one would think that looking as bad as I did that I would not have picked up that phone. But any Grandmother will tell you that one must pick up the phone when a grandchild calls, regardless if it is a video call and you look like Phyllis Diller. It got better on the call when I apologized for looking such a mess. She said, “Don’t worry Nina, you still look like you.” So, if you stop by the house and Phyllis Diller answers the door, the house is a mess and there are boxes on the front porch. Come on in. You got me. The coffee pot is on. It is still me.

Visual Arts Club presents check St. Helena Elementary School art teacher, Michelle Thomas, and principal, Senfronia Smith, accepted a check from the Dataw Island Visual Arts Club at the club’s annual meeting. The donation will help fund special projects in the K – 5 art classes. Members of the arts club decorated and sold glass ornaments with the intent of raising funds to promote art education. Club president, Barb Carakostas, noted the importance of art instruction in the early elementary curriculum when students have no fear of trying or failing and also have a can do attitude

regarding artistic expression. Mrs. Thomas recently returned to school after a maternity leave and was surprised to learn of the donation, which helped her implement a weaving experience with her kindergarten students. The students, their parents and their siblings all enjoyed the colorful, unique scarves which were created in the art classes. Many Dataw Island residents volunteer in the school and those interested in this program can explore opportunities by visiting the Beaufort County Schools website or by contacting Principal Smith at (843) 838-0300.

wine

By Celia Strong

Silver. Gold. Olive? Really? Interesting. Silver. Gold. Platinum. That would make some sense. Silver or gold anniversary? Makes some sense, too. But, somehow, that “olive” just doesn’t fit. Except in one case. Wine labels. Specific wine labels. So, guess what we are going to do this week? Yep, we’re going to make sense of silver, gold and olive in the same grouping. Aren’t we good! And, off we trip and travel to Sonoma County, California. For many wine drinkers, Napa County is the one and only source for United States Cabernet wines. Of course, they do make spectacular Cabs, but those of us who have opened doors, or stuck out our glasses to try other wines, know there are plenty of other sources in California for good Cabernet wines. One of them being Sonoma County. Within in the county, there are a multitude of areas with AVA designations. Places like Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma Coast, Sonoma Mountain, Russian River Valley, Knight’s Valley and more. Almost every one of the sixteen Sonoma AVAs grows Cabernet Sauvignon. Each of the wines with specific characteristics. Yep. Just like Napa. The history of wine in Sonoma goes back to as early as 1812. Padre Jose Altimira planted several thousand vines at what is now the city of Sonoma. Years

Silver. Gold. Olive. Celia Strong works at Bill’s Liquor & Fine Wines on Lady’s Island.

later, in 1854, when California joined the United States, wine grapes were a well established part of the agricultural and economic structure of California. Many of the immigrants who moved into the state were from northern Italy, and other parts of Europe, and they were experienced grape growers and winemakers. And, quickly now, we are going to get to our winery for this week. The B R Cohn Winery. Bruce Cohn, THE B R Cohn, bought land in Sonoma in 1974. Actually, it was an old dairy. On his land, there was a grove of Picholine olive trees, one hundred and forty-five year old trees. (They still make olive oil from these trees.) Bruce named his property the Olive Hill Estate Vineyards. For about ten years, Bruce sold his grapes to nearby wineries. In 1984, he founded his own winery, B R Cohn, and hired Helen Turley as his first winemaker. (Some of us have heard of Turley Zinfandels?) Bruce still lives on the estate, raised his family there, and still, since 1987, hosts an annual music festival. Even before

“Credit card convenience without the debt”

he got into the grape growing and wine business, Bruce managed The Doobie Brothers. So, the festival is a perfect fit. The vineyards around the winery are planted mostly with Cabernet Sauvignon. There is some Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. But, it’s the Cabernets we’re interested in today. Three of them. First, let’s look at the B R Cohn Silver Label Cabernet. This wine is blended from grapes from several hillside vineyards located in Sonoma, Mendocino, Lake Counties and their home Olive Hill Vineyard. Each individual lot of grapes is fermented and aged separately. In French oak barrels. Blending is done afterwards which produces a rich and complex Cabernet Sauvignon. The Silver Label Cab is rich with plum, cassis and black cherry aromas and flavors, mixed with cola, cocoa, anise, vanilla and baking spices. Annual production of this wine is about nineteen thousand cases. For $18.99 Stepping up a bit, we come to the B R Cohn Gold Label Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is a blend of grapes from their best lots in Sonoma and Napa. Basically, the Napa grapes give the wine structure and cassis flavors while the Sonoma grapes, including from the Olive Hill Estate, give elegant, soft tannins and cherry flavors. Again, each lot of grapes is fermented and aged separately. And the barrel aging, still in French oak, is longer, about three years. The Cabernet is fuller bodied (Like gold is heavier than silver?) Plum and black cherry and currant flavors, wrapped in an oaky spice blanket. Firm tannins, and a warm finish - it’s all delicious. About forty-eight hundred cases of this wine get made every year. For $37.99. Finally, we come to the B R Cohn Olive Hill Estate Vineyards, Sonoma Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon. One hundred percent Cabernet. This wine has a history of excellent scores in wine publications, numerous awards and accolades. Everything we smelled and tasted in the first two wines is here again. Only more of it - fuller, deeper, more intense. The wine is aged for twenty-four months in the best, tightgrain French oak barrels. I could go on and on for a while about it, but this is

For many wine drinkers, Napa County is the one and only source for United States Cabernet wines. Of course, they do make spectacular Cabs, but those of us who have opened doors, or stuck out our glasses to try other wines, know there are plenty of other sources in California for good Cabernet wines. one wine you have to taste for yourself. They make three thousand cases a year. For $49.99. Here’s my idea for what we should all do. Find a couple of friends and share the cost of all three bottles. Only one of each cuz you will be working with them. More drinking can be done after the working! Taste (key word here is “taste”) them in order - the Silver Label, then the Gold Label , and, last, the Olive Hill Estate. And you will have the entire lesson. And, on top of it all? You will then understand the silver, the gold and the olive? Phew! Enjoy.
