Celebrating breast cancer survivorship Award-winning journalist Geralyn Lucas, author of “Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy,” will speak at the annual Celebration of Survivorship evening of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. Joining her are three other breast cancer survivors: Jeff Flynn of East Meadow, who is a former support group member and currently a hotline volunteer responding to calls from men concerned about breast cancer; Jamaican-born Sonia Avery-Williams of Rockville Center, who is a nurse; and Susan Leach, also of Rockville Center, a former support group member and manager at a health care agency. The event, which is free, will be held on Thursday, Oct. 18 at Adelphi University’s University Center. Doors open at 6 pm and speakers begin at 7. Light supper will be served and there will be raffles. In addition, the breast cancer orga-
nization Kat’s Ribbon of Hope will be honored. Kat’s Ribbon of Hope’s partnership with the Adelphi program supports their mutual goal to provide assistance to women who would otherwise not have access to quality breast cancer treatment. Katerina Dinas Raptis, a breast cancer survivor who is the co-founder of KROH, was diagnosed when she was 32. She says that while having breast cancer was “a nightmare,” she was blessed with the support of her family and excellent medical care. Many women do not have such support so she was determined to help. She and her husband George Raptis and sister Despina Yarian established Kat’s Ribbon of Hope in 2013. To make a reservation, visit online — breast-cancer.adelphi.edu — or call 516877-4325 or email breastcancerhotline@ adelphi.edu.

Functional medicine as an alternative Working to address underlying causes of disease, ways to promote optimal wellness BY LOR I G R A H A M There is an epidemic that has gone rampant in the U.S. with regards to certain diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity that have amplified the expense of medical care astronomically. In addition, countless many are dissatisfied with orthodox pharmaceuticals and 10- minute doctor visits. Americans more than ever are seeking improved results in the arena of alternative medicine. They want meaningful results and to avoid the side effects of common-day pharmaceuticals. Functional Medicine is distinct from conventional medicine in that it is not couched in the model of treating symptoms. In Functional Medicine, a practitioner spends time discovering how and why certain illnesses occur and then restores health by addressing
Y u
what we call the root cause. This model is an individualized, patient-centered, and science-based approach that empowers both patients and practitioners to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. Dr. Sidney M. Bakeris credited with being the Father of Functional Medicine. He is the 1999 recipient for the Linus Pawling Award for his contribution to the development of functional medicine. In a recent interview with Dr. Mark Hyman, chairman of the board of directors for the Institute for Functional Medicine, Dr. Baker draws a distinction between the labeling of a disease based on a pattern of symptoms and determining a treatment strategy when searching for causality. He goes on to say, that one particular disease can have many different causes that would then determine different treatment modalities, but
by focusing only on disease, medicine just treats symptoms. The Institute for Functional Medicine was established in 1991 and through the energy and dedication of Susan and Dr. Jeffrey Bland, now offers Functional Medicine related services, products, and educational programs both nationally and internationally. The Institute for Functional Medicine trains licensed healthcare practitioners who have at least a Master’s Degree. To become a Certified Practitioner, one must complete seven modules including Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice, CardioMetabolic, Digestion, Hormones, Gastro-Intestinal, Immune, and Energy. A case report has to pass the scrutiny of the board, and a certification written exam must be passed. The art of functional medicine requires a detailed understanding of each patient’s

genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors. The practitioner will then use that data to personalize treatment plans that result in improved patient outcomes. Here’s an example of how a Functional Medicine Practitioner might look at someone with Hashimoto’s (auto-immune thyroid disease). First, a full thyroid panel would be done, not just the typical TSH, but T3, T4, Reverse T3, thyroglobulin, and thyroid peroxidase. The practitioner would look to see if other systems are involved by looking at symptoms like digestion, bowel movements, gas, and bloating. That’s because a Functional Medicine practitioner is trained to see the link between gastrointestinal issues and autoimmune issues of all kinds. An understanding of what nutrients the conversion and utilization of the thyroid hormones need would cause a Functional Medicine practitio-
ner to look to see if there are micronutrient deficiencies and to correct if needed. In addition, food sensitivities and leaky gut also play a role with autoimmune thyroid, in fact, any autoimmune issues and there is a four-step gut healing protocol that would be employed. As you can see, by addressing root cause, rather than symptoms, a Functional Medicine practitioner can see the interwoven pieces in the complexity of disease. They may find that one condition has many different contributing causes and likewise, one cause may result in many different conditions. As a result, Functional Medicine treatment will target the specific manifestations of disease as it expresses in each individual. Ties between hearing loss, dementia Studies show correcting hearing loss can help prevent onset of neurological problems DR. AMY SAPODIN Do you know anyone who has ever been cured from dementia? Did you know every 3-4 seconds another patient is diagnosed with dementia? Rates of dementia are estimated to triple in the next 30 years. Unlike some other diseases, with dementia the physical body is estimated to outlive the individual’s mental capabilities by 10-plus years. Earlier this year, Pfizer, one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, abandoned its research on dementia after losing billions. With no known cure for this catastrophic disease, it is imperative we look at new reports coming out helping us to better understand the science of Dementia and ways to help us avoid the devastating fate of this diagnosis. An article from a European Dementia commission titled: “Dementia Prevention, Intervention, and Care” published in the Lancet Journal detailed important information. The Lancet report highlighted that nearly 30 percent of all dementia cases are considered preventable. Phew! The report even laid out important modifiable lifestyle factors that can help each of us prevent dementia and,
not surprisingly, the treatment of hearing loss is at the top of that list. By treating hearing loss one helps to reduce social isolation, cerebral atrophy and cognitive overload. Dr. Doraiswamy, a neuropsychologist from Duke University said it best: “The benefits of correcting hearing loss on cognition are twice as large as the benefits from any cognitive-enhancing drugs now on the market. It should be the first thing we focus on.”
Most people are very surprised to learn that untreated hearing loss is a major risk factor for developing cognitive decline and dementia. A medical study from Johns Hopkins demonstrated that untreated hearing loss increases the risk of developing dementia by 200 percent to 500 percent. Dr. Frank Lin and his team at Johns Hopkins Medical Center found three primary effects of hearing loss that can contribute directly to your risk of dementia:
No. 1 – Social Isolation – Withdrawal from social situations is common in individuals with hearing loss. Keeping your brain mentally fit – with social interactions, communication, reading, and playing games – is a recipe for a long, healthy life! No. 2 – Cerebral Atrophy – Multiple scientific studies have demonstrated that hearing impairment is associated with accelerated brain atrophy, which is a hallmark feature of dementia. As the auditory system ages, we lose sensory cells in our ears. Each cell has the potential to make connections with millions of cells throughout the brain affecting hearing, speech, memory, and beyond. Therefore, hearing loss equals brain function loss. No. 3 – Cognitive Overload (Or Working Your Brain Too Hard) – With hearing loss, your brain is constantly on overload. The extra time it takes you to follow what is being said in a conversation can really add up, and this can harm your brain. Hearing well is the number one step most of us can take in the battle against dementia! Dr. Amy Sapodin, clinical audiologist, Advanced Hearing Center, www.advancedhearingcenter.org

Did you know? According to the American Psychiatric Association, psychotherapy is a way to help people with a variety of mental illnesses and emotional diďŹƒculties. Sometimes referred to as “talk therapy,â€? psychotherapy can help people cope with diďŹƒculties they face in their daily lives, but also help people deal with extraordinary events, such as the death of a loved one or the diagnosis of a medical illness. Psychotherapy also can help people cope with the impact of trauma. Psychotherapy sessions can involve a single individual or be conducted in small or large groups. Short-term psychotherapy sessions to deal with immediate issues may require just a few visits with a therapist, while long-term sessions may require months or years to help people fully cope with longstanding, complex issues. Though some might be skeptical of psychotherapy, a 2016 study from the American Psychological Association found that roughly 75 percent of people who enter psychotherapy beneďŹ t from their therapy in some way. In addition, the American Psychiatric Association notes that psychotherapy has been linked to positive changes in the brain and body.

emotional expression. “THE GOAL IS FOR THE EYEBROWS TO ENHANCE THE EYES AND FACE NATURALLY AND CREATE A HARMONIOUS BALANCE” We always hear the expression “the eyes are the windows of the soul.” This is true, but they are complemented by the eyebrows, which frame the eyes and the face, giving us different unique characteristics, personality and expressions. Over the years of experience in the beauty business I learned about the importance of the eyebrows. As an optometrist I learned how to do eyeliners, and know the eye’s shape and expressions are essential for the total look. This is one of the many reasons I got involved in the cosmetic industry. With time and artistic ability I specialized in micropigmentation, or permanent cosmetics. I have been doing this since 1993. The inquiries for eyebrows increased so much in my practice that it compelled me to research and understand the importance of the eyebrows. It is very difficult to design and shape the eyebrows properly. Although we know the basics, we should give them to a professional expert on eyebrows to sculpt them to a perfect shape suitable to your features. The bone structure, features, and facial shape (round, oval, pear, heart, or square) have to be considered in the design of the eyebrows. The goal is for the eyebrows to enhance the eyes and face naturally and create harmonious balance. If you decide to permanently modify or change your eyebrows, check the credentials and look at the portfolio for the person you choose. A good professional will give you the best design to enhance your face, consider your bone structure, natural features, skin tone, previous cosmetic procedures, and personality.
