A little more than a year ago, Blank Slate Media honored a group of top business leaders who succeeded during a time in which 450,000 Americans had died of COVID-19. We had hoped then that the worse was now behind us. But we were wrong. The pandemic continued to exact its toll through 2021. All of which gives us even more reason to celebrate the 48 people we are honoring this year. These business leaders are forwardthinking individuals who were able to successfully pivot and adapt to this new world to continue to serve their customers and clients. Each of them has worked their way
up the corporate ladder and defined their own management style pushing the boundaries. Some continued to educate our children and feed the hungry among us; others were personally responsible for caring for the sick and preventing the spread of the virus while maintaining the highest standards for treatment. They have helped fully reopen businesses by changing how their companies operated, allowing Nassau County’s economy to move forward. They have advocated for government to address the county’s high cost of living and regulations that hamper economic growth. Throughout the pandemic, these highly-motivated individuals continued to volunteer their time and skills to other organizations and share ideas amongst each other. But challenges remain. COVID-19 is expected to be with us in 2022 in various levels of severity. Supply chain interruptions are expected to continue to impact most businesses as will inflation. Widespread labor shortages and the sharp rise in cyber and ransomware attacks on government and businesses offer additional challenges. The 48 people we are honoring offer examples of how Nassau County can succeed during a difficult time. We had asked them how they see their businesses evolving due to the changing times and what advice they would give to others. You will find their responses thoughtful and inspirational. Congratulations to all of the honorees, who are well-deserving of this recognition. n

Matt earned a Bachelor of Arts in History (with a concentration in American History) from the University of Pennsylvania and a Juris Doctor from Hofstra University’s Maurice A. Deane School of Law. He was admitted to the bar in New York State in July 2012. Matt lives in Commack with his wife Tracie and son Jack. n

Lee J. Brodsky CEO | BEB Capital
I am the chief executive officer of BEB Capital, a privately held, multifaceted real estate company. Since joining the company in 2013, I have led BEB’s growth as an institutional-grade owner and operator of industrial assets along the East Coast; grown the company’s multifamily and office portfolio; and launched BEB Lending, a service line that offers loans of up to $50 million and specializes in core real estate assets, including multifamily, industrial, mixed-use, office, retail, development sites, note-on-note financing and other commercial property types. In addition to spearheading each of these historic milestones for the firm, I have recruited institutional and corporate real estate specialists and expanded the company’s research and support staff. As CEO, I oversee the overall direction of BEB Capital and guide strategic planning for the business including the execution and management of key partnerships. How do you see your business evolving due to the changing times?
The biggest asset to a company is human capital and ensuring that everyone is united in achieving a singular mission. Being empathetic, treating people well, and understanding their viewpoints is critical to fostering an environment where employees do their best work. BEB Capital has undergone fundamental changes over the last five years to position us for strategic growth. As a leader, you need to be prepared and able to adapt to changes. I have learned the values of diversifying risk and preparing for changes in the market, especially since the onset of the pandemic.
We positioned BEB at the forefront of the growth of the Long Island industrial market, a sector that has benefited from growth in e-commerce, which was accelerated due to changing consumer shopping habits as a result of the pandemic. We are currently focused on diversifying the BEB Capital portfolio to include multifamily and office assets in addition to a growing industrial portfolio What advice would you give other business owners? I believe that businesses need to recognize the value that their employees bring to the company. The biggest asset to a company is human capital and ensuring that everyone is united in achieving a singular mission. Being empathetic, treating people well, and understanding their viewpoints is critical to fostering an environment where employees do their best work. Without company buy-in and employees working their hardest, BEB Capital would not be where it is today. n

Brad C. Calhoun President/CEO Teachers Federal Credit Union |
Brad C. Calhoun is President and Chief Executive Officer of Teachers Federal Credit Union, one of the nation’s largest credit unions, with over $8.7 billion in assets, serving more than 360,000 members at 32 full-service branch locations throughout the New York metro area. Mr. Calhoun has over 25 years of leadership experience in the financial industry. Before joining Teachers, he served as Chief Retail and Marketing Officer of First Tech Federal Credit Union, where he led the strategic direction of the organization. He directed a number of major marketing initiatives and spearheaded the redesign and strategy for all branches, transforming the member experience while simultaneously creating greater member value. In his time at First Tech, he was an integral part of the organization’s transformation and growth from $5.5 billion to $12 billion. He served as a committee member of ALCO, Pricing,
Investment Committee, and Credit Risk Committee. Prior to his position with First Tech Federal Credit Union, Mr. Calhoun held several roles at Bank of America, including Area Executive Senior Vice President for the bank’s Pacific Northwest Region. Mr. Calhoun earned a BA in Business Administration from California Baptist University. He is passionate about serving his community, most recently as Chairman of the Board for Junior Achievement Washington. A native of Southern California, Mr. Calhoun now calls Long Island home, where he lives with his wife, Danielle, and three daughters. How do you see your business evolving due to the changing times? One of the biggest lessons we learned from the pandemic is the importance of digital solutions. As many people were hesitant about visiting locations in person when COVID-19 first began impacting the region, we worked diligently to educate
members about our website and mobile application, which has the ability to facilitate the majority of banking transactions virtually. Teachers created how-to video guides for our members who might be taking advantage of our mobile and online banking services more frequently or, in some cases, for the first time ever. Additionally, we prioritized the implementation of Appointment Banking, which provided members with not only the assurance they needed to feel comfortable visiting a Teachers location in person during the pandemic but also with the ability to schedule a phone call with a Teachers representative. As Teachers continues to grow and evolve, I foresee additional digital enhancements being at the forefront of our strategy. Meeting members how and where they want to bank is and will continue to be a priority as the organization expands into new markets. n

Franklin Camarano, Jr. President Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce |
Originally from Franklin Square, Frank lived west of Philadelphia for 14 years after attending Villanova University, where he eventually became an electrician and started his own company, catering to commercial and large residential work. Thirty-five years ago, Frank’s family built their first fitness facility, The Spa, located at Miami Beach’s Fontainebleau Hilton Hotel. During that time, they also operated the health club and golf course at the North
Shore Towers in Lake Success. In 1994, Frank moved back to Long Island when his family built the original North Shore Fitness located in Great Neck. In 2001 Frank had an opportunity to get back into construction, becoming the supervisor for a large union carpentry company, doing the entire interior of a new residential building in Tribeca, just a few blocks north of the World Trade Center. The experience of Sept 11 took a toll on all, so Frank chose
to re-concentrate his efforts back on Long Island after the Tribeca project was completed in December of the same year. His family started the planning of East Meadow’s very own North Shore Fitness, which Frank of course built, opening in early 2003. They became a World Gym franchise from 2014 thru May of 2020, and then Evolve Fitness thru the end of 2021. Another construction opportunity arose back in 2012 where, while running the gym full time he also was the field supervisor for Maxtec, a union rebar company. Their scope covered 4 major sites simultaneously (for four different project management companies) — the Belt Parkway System roadway/overpass/ bridges project, the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, the Grand Central Pkwy roadway/overpass project at LaGuardia Airport and the Alexander Hamilton Bridge rehabilitation project (over the Harlem River joining the Bronx and Manhattan). The AHB project was the
second largest single-contract construction project ever undertaken by state Department of Transportation. During this time Frank covered all these projects every day and ran the gym at night and on the weekends. At its peak, Maxtec employed 110 union workers, which Frank was responsible for, operating across all the projects. In East Meadow, Frank has been a member of the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce since 2002, and in 2015 started a two-year term as a board member. Within a year was presented with the “Outstanding Board Member of the Year” award and was asked to serve as vice president the following year in 2016. Frank was president from 2017-2018, the only president at that time to have served two consecutive terms in 67 years, was chairman of the board for another two years, and remains a member of the board as a past president. As for the East Meadow Kiwanis, he has been a member for over 17 years and has served
on their board of directors. In 2019 he was honored to be the East Meadow Herald’s “Person of the Year”! Outside of East Meadow, Frank is the Vice President of the Nassau Parks Conservancy, which promotes activities at and around Nassau County-owned parks. The Conservancy is the organization that operates, among other things, the Long Island Marathon! Even though he has worked with them on many projects over the years, as of 2021, he is proud to be one of Vision Long Island’s newest board members. As for the Nassau Council, he has been an active participant since he started as vice president of the East Meadow Chamber in 2016 and served on the Breakfast Committee since. He started as a director on the board in November of 2018, ran the annual 2019 Presidents Roundtable in April, and by June of that same year became 1st vice president, and as of this November 2021 proudly serves as president. n

Kathleen Caputi
senior Vice President | Epoch 5 Public Relations
Kathleen loves talking to people, certainly an asset in her role as a communicator. Her daily conversations with clients, journalists, and colleagues inform her work and spark ideas that result in impactful placements, awards, and higher visibility for her clients. She takes the time to dig into the essence of her clients’ professions, expertise and personalities to identify opportunities, uncover trends and pitch original ideas that strike a chord with journalists. At Epoch 5 Public Relations,
Kathleen has represented a diversity of clients including professional services, real estate, health and fitness, senior care, and large not-for-profit agencies. She has received three national communications industry awards and was named among the Top 50 Women in Business on Long Island. Kathleen has secured prominent placements for her clients in major media in the New York Metro area and other U.S. cities including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Newsday and other top daily newspapers as well as television in-
terviews, webinars, blogs, and bylined articles. She has written many award winning nominations for clients. One of her most memorable projects, for which she earned the Public Relations Professionals of Long Island “PR Campaign of the Year” award for Epoch 5, was bringing journalists from around the globe to the world premiere of the international photo exhibit “Journeys to School,” at the United Nations Visitor Centre in New York City. “Journeys to School” follows children from all over the world as they travel to school on foot, by boat, pedi-bus, donkey, bicycle and other modes of transportation. How do you see your business evolving due to the changing times? The digital age has had a profound effect on public relations and marketing, revolutionizing the way humans communicate. PR at its most basic is about storytelling, and the industry has embraced non-traditional media to tell its stories. Content is king. In addition to pitching journalists, editors, and photographers in print and electronic media, Epoch 5 engages with editors and producers of blogs, podcasts, and webinars; create and maintain social media accounts for clients, shoot video and photos, and write original content.
More of the stories we place include video. As a result of staff cuts at newsrooms, journalists rely more than ever on high-quality

Industry trade publications operate with only a handful of people and look for contributed content. Well-written, informative bylined articles and guest columns are welcomed. Social media is not just changing the way PR professionals operate, it’s changing the way journalists create and distribute content, with particular consideration of a story’s life after print. Dr. Kimberly R. Cline President | Long Island University
Dr. Kimberly R. Cline became the 10th president of Long Island University in July 2013 and assumed leadership of one of the largest and most comprehensive private universities in the country. Dr. Cline has led the nearly century-old institution through a transformational process to provide students with an exceptional education that emphasizes experiential learning and excellence in teaching and research. Dr. Cline’s tenure has seen dynamic new schools, centers, and career-ready programs launched at LIU to increase retention and graduation, attract high-achieving applicants, and improve philanthropy while exposing students to high-demand academic programs under innovative leadership.
She spearheaded the launch of the College of Veterinary Medicine, one of four veterinary schools in the northeast joining the University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University and Tufts University; The Roosevelt School of global relations, diplomacy, leadership and service; and the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports and Entertainment, a collaboration with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation media empire that allows students to engage with entertainment industry icons. These programs complement LIU’s top offerings in healthcare and education as well as the nation’s first School of Professional Accountancy, the AACSB International-accredited School of Business, and the Kennedy Center
Award-winning theatre program, ranked in the top 30 in the nation. Dr. Cline also led a collaboration with RXR Realty to allow historic investments in the LIU Brooklyn campus, and a groundbreaking partnership with Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment to restore the legendary Brooklyn Paramount Theatre at the campus. These initiatives reinforce LIU’s prominent role in the renaissance of Downtown Brooklyn, providing unique opportunities for the entire LIU community in all areas of study. A recognized leader in education, Dr. Cline has been named to the Long Island Press Power List’s 50 Most Influential People on Long Island, the inaugural Long Island Power 50 by City and State, and Brooklyn’s Women of Distinction. Dr. Cline is a board member of the Long Island Association and board member and former president of the Long Island Regional Advisory Council on Higher Education. She previously served as chair of the Board of
Trustees of the Council of Independent Colleges and Universities and as a member of the board of the Center for Creative Leadership. Along with a Bachelor in Science in Industrial Relations, Dr. Cline also holds a Master of Business Administration, Juris Doctor, and Doctor of Educational Administration. She previously served as Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer of the State University of New York system and President of Mercy College. How do you see your business evolving due to the changing times? The success of higher education depends on its value proposition. Universities can only be cost-effective if they provide high-quality education while remaining affordable, and if they adapt to the rapidly-evolving digital economy to ensure students can obtain jobs after graduation. LIU has honored its pledge to cap annual tuition rate increases at 2% since 2014 while maintaining its student-first approach to providing a world-class education. This disciplined strategy has
resulted in tuition rates as much as 47% lower than regional universities and has allowed LIU students to graduate at a financial advantage over their peers. Higher education has traditionally been reactive to the economy. LIU has shifted that paradigm by investing in cuttingedge programs that will help students get jobs in emerging fields, including artificial intelligence, data analytics, digital game design, as well as high-demand markets such as health professions, pharmaceutical sciences and business. What advice would you give other business owners? My advice to business owners is to embrace change and not be afraid to think big. At LIU, we are not building a university for today’s world; we are building the university of the future. We created an ambitious, strategic long-term plan driven by innovation, and we have already made strides toward our ultimate goal of becoming an internationallyrenowned teaching and research institution. n

With over 35 years in the residential real estate business, Ann Conroy is known for her passion for the real estate industry, her love of the agents, her respect for the consumers, and her pride in the Douglas Elliman Brand. As CEO of the Long Island

Michael Costello CEO | Costello’s Ace Hardware
Michael Costello, CEO of Costello’s Ace Hardware, began his career at the age of 13, working weekends with his father Vinnie at the family hardware store in Deer Park. Vinnie, who founded the company, served as CEO, and led the small company from 1976 until 2016 and oversaw the expansion of the business from a single store to one of the largest family-owned Ace Hardware chains in the country. Over the years, Michael held many different roles in the com-
pany from stock boy all the way up to President and Chief Operations Officer. He was appointed as the company’s CEO in 2016 when Vinnie retired. Since 2016, Michael has continued the outstanding legacy set by his father of growth and problem-solving. Under Michael’s leadership, the company has grown from 25 locations and $65 Million in sales annually to 40 stores and over $140 Million in sales. Costello’s Ace Hardware has become one of the largest inde-
pendently owned Ace Hardware chains in the nation. Costello’s vision is to grow to 75 locations and $250 Million in revenue by 2025 and the company is currently ahead of its goal. How do you see your business evolving due to the changing times? We’ve been experiencing change for almost 50 years, but certainly, there has been a rapid acceleration more recently- especially through the pandemic. Changes in how consumers want to engage with our brand and shop has us embracing an omnichannel transformation. We don’t see this slowing down. We rapidly added various order fulfillment capabilities like in-store and curbside pick-up, drastically increased our fleet of delivery vehicles, and continuously look for additional services our customers are seeking. Additionally, our marketing strategies continue to evolve. A plan once dominated by printed sale flyers sent to mailboxes is now giving way to a wide range of digital, social, and targeted mail, texts, and emails.
Important to us is the segmentation of the business- the DIY and professional customers we serve, services we provide, and critical product categories. Each has its own unique strategy for growth and success. Technology will continue to play an important role in the future. There’s no such thing as “no tech” anymore- consumers won’t tolerate it. Smaller independents like Costello’s may not need to be on the cutting edge of technology, but we will have to utilize technology to engage, communicate, and operate more efficiently. The one aspect of our business that will never change is the importance of our team to our success. The red-vested heroes of Costello’s Ace are our secret sauce, and what differentiates us most from our big box and on-line competitors. The helpful, friendly, personal service that our frontline associates provide is what keeps our customers emotionally engaged. What advice would you give other business owners?
Always lead with your values. Focus less on “what you do” and more on “why you do it”. Throughout my years in the business, I’ve seen so much change. Change in the products and the services consumers want. Change in the demographic, segments, and shopping habits of customers. Change in the people that are seeking to work in our business. It’s easy to get stuck in your ways and resist change. At Costello’s, we focus on the values that Vinnie built the business on- unbridled enthusiasm for solving problems, building deep, meaningful relationships, being a positive influence in our communities, and a desire to continuously improve and grow. This allows us to stay openminded, agile, seek improvement, and change. It also empowers our people, making us a great place to work, and puts our people in a position to consistently deliver for our customers. n

Nancy Costopulos President/CEO | Old Westbury Gardens
Nancy Costopulos is President & CEO of Old Westbury Gardens, one of the few remaining historic Long Island estates open to the public and one of the best-preserved of its kind in America. Old Westbury Gardens is a private nonprofit founded in 1959; a treasured landmark that, with vision and careful stewardship, has survived to become an inspiring and authentic link to the past and a welcoming, magical place where visitors
enjoy beautiful historic gardens and stunning architecture. Nancy joined Old Westbury Gardens in 2015 and over the last seven years, she has successfully led her talented team and moved the organization forward through the development of a long-range strategic plan which lays out a vision for the future. That plan is designed to preserve the Gardens’ historic assets, transform the visitor experience, and ensure Old Westbury Gardens will remain relevant to
successive generations. In her time at the Gardens, the largest and most significant preservation project in the history of the organization was completed along with an ambitious and successful capital campaign. New virtual programs were created to address the temporary closure of the Gardens education programs. The annual fund hit its highest mark ever, new tour programs have been created to enhance interpretation of the site, and large exhibitions were launched raising awareness and increasing membership and visitorship. Nancy began her professional career in the corporate sector with Beatrice Foods/KKR in Seattle and Toronto and then moved to Los Angeles where she held her first nonprofit job with the Los Angeles Zoo Association where she served for six years. Relocating with her husband and two children to Chicago, she accepted a position at the Chicago Botanic Garden, one of the world’s leading public gardens and horticultural in-
stitutions, in fundraising, membership and public programs. She then moved to the Chicago-based American Marketing Association, the largest professional society for marketing professionals and academics in the world, where she became the Chief Marketing Officer and served for 17 years. Nancy also serves as ViceChair of the Board of Discover Long Island, is an avid road cyclist and beekeeper, as well as an enthusiastic cook and cooking instructor with a certificate in Culinary Arts from Kendall College in Chicago. ON THE PANDEMIC: Like so many organizations in the early days of the pandemic, Old Westbury Gardens, which had welcomed visitors from Long Island and beyond for over 50 years, had to close its gates to the public. Many of the staff transitioned to a work from home model and began to develop online programs and activities that would continue to engage the communities it served.
Nancy is leading Old Westbury Gardens to embrace the change created by the turmoil of the last two years by remaining agile, reducing risk, and generating a sense of excitement as plans evolve to recover and rebuild profits. “Like so many astute leaders in the public and private sectors, we’ve all learned that so much of what has changed will remain, and we must acknowledge, create, and manage new business models. At Old Westbury Gardens we are working hard to understand and meet the new expectations of our visitors, and engage with the new customers we welcomed to our beautiful outdoor site during the pandemic. We are thinking differently, while at the same time, we keep doing what great brands and great businesses do—strengthening our commitment to our mission, our customers, and our values, and navigate through it all with empathy and a renewed sense of collaboration.” n

Phillip Eng
President | MTA Long Island Railroad
Phillip Eng is the President of the MTA Long Island Rail Road, the largest and busiest commuter railroad in the nation serving over 91 million riders a year. Appointed in April 2018 following several years of declining on-time train performance, Mr. Eng quickly set out to make immediate and longterm improvements by initiating
the railroad's Forward program – a set of strategic initiatives aimed at improving service reliability and enhancing the customer experience. Many of Mr. Eng’s accomplishments as President involve collaboration with the LIRR management and workforce to develop first-in-the-nation technologies to address long-stand-
ing issues, like improving grade crossing safety through a partnership with Waze, leading to grade crossing alerts being used globally. To combat the everpresent Autumn issues of leaves on tracks, which cause delays and can damage car wheels, Mr. Eng and his team developed and deployed an industry-leading laser train resulting in dramatic service improvements. Facing the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 Mr. Eng’s focus is keeping employees and customers safe by increasing disinfecting and cleaning of trains, stations and workplaces at frequencies never before seen at the agency. To put power in customers’ hands, the LIRR led the nation with real-time train information so riders can see current train capacity to make informed travel decisions and find less-crowded trains. To further protect riders and increase confidence that public transportation is safe to ride, the LIRR is piloting new air purification systems in train cars that effectively kill airborne viruses like COVID-19.
Under Mr. Eng’s leadership, the LIRR now has improved reliability, all while delivering a historic $6B capital program that’s modernizing and expanding LIRR infrastructure including Double Track in Suffolk County, Main Line Expansion in Nassau County, East Side Access, Jamaica Capacity Improvements, new M9 fleet and Centralized Train Control, and more. Mr. Eng first joined the state public transportation agency in 2017 as the MTA’s Chief Operating Officer, where he led initiatives to modernize transportation systems through innovative technologies. These included the development of the new contactless fare payment system OMNY and testing new signaling systems including the use of ultra-wideband. Mr. Eng also served as the Acting President for New York City Transit leading the early efforts of the Subway Action Plan. Mr. Eng’s public service career began in 1983 at the New York State Department of Transportation as a Junior Engineer. He gained expertise working his
way up through various groups from Structures, Bridge Inspection, Maintenance, Design and Construction before joining management and executive leadership roles. At NYSDOT, Mr. Eng held various positions including Construction Supervisor, Regional Director, Chief Engineer before his final post as Executive Deputy Commissioner. During his tenure at DOT, Mr. Eng played a vital role improving project delivery and use of design-build to deliver significant projects such as the I-81 Environmental Impact Study, Rochester Train Station, and construction of the new Kosciuszko Bridge in Brooklyn and the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge in the Hudson Valley. Mr. Eng earned his Bachelor of Engineering at Cooper Union and is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. A native and life-long Long Islander, Mr. Eng currently resides with his wife, Carole, and their four children in Smithtown. He commutes to his office in Jamaica via the LIRR’s Smithtown Station daily. n

Henry C. “Hank” Foley, PhD. president New York Institute of Technology |
Henry C. “Hank” Foley, Ph.D., is the fourth president of New York Institute of Technology and is committed to providing outstanding outcomes for all of its students. This is accomplished by putting them at the core of a strategy that seeks to achieve excellence across all phases of the student experience—from recruitment and retention to the reward of graduation and start of a professional career. Creative resource generation and prudent asset management ensure that New York Tech further enhances these experiences and supports the aspirations of students, faculty, and staff. Foley believes that putting people first is critical because it is their suc-
cess that fuels their passion for New York Tech, resulting in more financial resources, higher enrollments, and deeper partnerships that enhance the institute’s reputation. As the University of Missouri’s interim chancellor, Foley led the university through a very challenging period of unrest, change, and, ultimately, real progress toward inclusion and equity. Before being appointed interim chancellor in November 2015, he joined the MU system in 2013 as executive vice president for academic affairs, where he was tasked with strengthening the academic quality of each of the four universities, increasing the size of the research enterprise, and cul-
tivating more technology transfer to the market. At Penn State, Foley served as department head of chemical engineering, associate vice president for research, dean of the college of information sciences and technology, and vice president for research and dean of the graduate school. In addition, he has held faculty appointments in chemical engineering and chemistry at MU, Penn State, and the University of Delaware. Foley holds a bachelor’s degree from Providence College, master’s degree from Purdue University, and doctorate from Penn State, all in chemistry. An accomplished researcher who has dedicated more than 30 years toward advancing the study of nanotechnology, he holds 16 patents, has written more than 150 articles and a textbook, the second edition of which appeared in June 2021. In addition, Foley has mentored nearly 50 graduate and undergraduate thesis students, as well as post-doctoral fellows. Those who have conducted research with him now hold
faculty positions at MIT, Kansas State, Michigan State, University of South Carolina, and Penn State, as well as senior research and management positions at large and prestigious corporations and startups. Foley is a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the National Academy of Inventors. In 2015, Foley was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science by Providence College and, in 2017, earned the Distinguished Science Alumni Award from Purdue University. He is a trustee for Providence College, as well as a member of the board of the Commission on Independent Colleges & Universities in New York and the Long Island Regional Advisory Council on Higher Education. Foley also serves on the Board of Directors of the Lincoln Center Business Improvement District and the Long Island Association. In 2019, he received
a Long Island Business News Executive Circle Award. Foley has been married to Dr. Karin Foley for over 40 years. They reside in Plandome and have two daughters, Laura and Erica, and two grandchildren, Juliet and Graham. How do you see your business evolving due to changing times? The pandemic has required us to adjust our business model, focus more on the bottom line, and improve top-line revenue. To accomplish this, we have made the student experience central to our strategy. What advice would you give other business owners? While strategy is crucial, culture dominates. Part of any strategy that requires change must also manage cultural resistance to change. This is true for any enterprise seeking to adapt to the present while preparing for the future. Not only can culture overtake strategy, so, too, can fortune. One must consider fortune constantly—and, in view of that, constantly re-evaluate strategy. n

After 20 years in the largest financial services firms, I found my true passion in entrepreneurship, founding a successful hedge fund, growing it from $750,000 to $1.2 billion in seven years. As a result, I now consult to or invest in businesses where I see the opportunity to disrupt or challenge the “status quo.” My 44 years of diverse business experience led me to invest in “disruption” to seek the best returns! My chemical engineering foundation at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute combined with Harvard Business School provided me the tools to effectively capitalize on such opportunities. The most exciting career highlights were being involved in, and driving, industry disruption through better solutions to the “status quo.” Taking the buyer’s shoes lays out the vision, and my engineering mindset sets out the path. Good disruption results in better customer services while providing the disruptor with the potential opportunity for financial gain. Today, my focus is both financial services and boating industries. While different industries, both are ripe for disruption, and both are experiencing major disruptive forces. At Palumbo Wealth Man-
around the country supporting the many Grumman won IT programs at NASA and other government sites. In 1995 he was put in charge of Project Long Island, and in the fall of 1997, an organization was formed called the Long Is-
land Software and Technology Network or LISTnet. Peter was elected chairman and president of LISTnet, which in 25 years has grown to nearly 800 member companies with 50 corporate sponsors. The purpose of LISTnet is to promote our region as a Technology Center of Excellence and help tech companies grow their business. In March 2016, LISTnet formed the Digital Ballpark a co-working and event space in Plainview with 24 tech companies. In 2018 he stepped down as president but remains chairman of LISTnet and co-manager of the Digital Ballpark. Peter currently is also the Ccoordinator of the Co-Op Program at New York Institute of Technology, as well as an adjunct professor at NYIT, teaching an entrepreneurship class called, “Technology Business Startup Practices.” He has a BBA from CCNY and received a MBA with honors from St. John’s University in 1978.

agement, we seek to be a disruptive force by delivering an integrated, cost-effective comprehensive investment planning solution to deliver investor “peace of mind.” I would estimate less than 10% of individual investors have engaged in a true comprehensive financial plan. This presents a huge opportunity to provide the best solution: integrated wealth management to individuals and families Having advised major corporations and
institutions, the individual investor deserves no less. Similarly, consumer boating is going through major disruption. For years, boating required owning a boat. That is changing drastically. Long Island Boat Rentals is rapidly expanding the rentals and their Carefree Boat Club along with captain-chartered boat & yacht experiences to allow everyone without a boat, experienced or not, the opportunity to get out on the water with hassle-free, cost-effective boating. I am the co-owner of Long Island Boat Rentals, Senior Advisor to Palumbo Wealth Management and One Oak Capital Management, Managing Member of Peconic Bay Partners, past President and current Vice President of the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District, Port Washington Chamber of Commerce Board Member and their 2021 Small Businessperson of the Year, and a Member of the Masters’ Program Alumni Board of the Lally School of Management, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
How do you see your business evolving due to the changing times? I see a major disruptive opportunity in the delivery of integrated wealth management/financial planning services. Would you build a house without a licensed architect and contractor? No, the government will not let you. So why retire without a financial plan from a wealth manager? After a decade of stable financial markets, I expect a challenging next 10 years. Integrated wealth management/financial planning will be critical. Most “financial advisors” today do not insist on a comprehensive financial plan. This is wrong! Most individuals go forever without knowing the difference. A plan early in life would show investors the peace of mind you get from a comprehensive financial plan. It is why I am confident those firms insisting on an integrated wealth advisor/financial planning capability will achieve the highest client satisfaction. Palumbo is building the ideal
“platform,” integrating institutional investing knowledge with comprehensive, personalized financial planning. Phil Palumbo, the founder, shares that same vision and passion. My advice in boating: Continue to disrupt: Expand the rental, boat club and captained-charter experiences to all who love the water. Allow all the inexperienced boaters embrace the water experience. What advice would you give other business owners? Think like a disrupter! Think like an “underdog” against the big websites, companies, and your competitors. Think how you can “change the game.” Do not be satisfied with the status quo! Look at your service or product, analyze your customers and their needs, and continuously think about how you could improve your value proposition. Technology will play a critical role, but it is not everything. Embrace change for the customer’s benefit, do not fight it. n

Dr. Joseph Greco
Sr. Vice President/Chief of Operations | NYU Langone Hospital Long Island
Dr. Joseph Greco is senior vice president and chief of operations at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, part of NYU Langone Health. He oversees the strategic direction and daily op-
erations of the hospital as well as the delivery of excellence in clinical care and patient safety. Dr. Greco assumed the hospital’s leadership in 2019 and has skillfully guided it through
the Covid pandemic. “If the last 24 months have taught us anything,” said Dr. Greco, “it is that if you failed to keep up with the baseline evolution, you will not be in the position to gain opportunities when unexpected challenges occur. This was abundantly evident as we saw the advantages of a robust IT infrastructure in meeting the challenges brought on by the pandemic and delivering outstanding healthcare to the members of our community.” Under Dr. Greco’s stewardship, the hospital introduced an advanced heart failure program, offering patients the latest clinical advances including heart-assist devices and access to a transplant program with the fastest transplant rates in the state. The hospital also achieved designation as a Comprehensive Stroke Center—the highest-level certification—among other noteworthy achievements. Dr. Greco, who brings to bear nearly 30 years of clinical experience to hospital leader-
ship, previously served as the hospital’s chief medical officer. Like his own evolving roles over the years, he noted that healthcare is always “in a continual state of evolution.” He added, “It’s so important that we understand and antici-

Elaine Gross
Founder/President | ERASE Racism
Elaine Gross is the Founder and President of ERASE Racism, the civil rights organization based on Long Island that exposes and addresses the devastating impact of historical and ongoing structural racism, particularly in housing and public school education. It does so through research, policy advocacy, legal action, and educating and mobilizing the public – driving policy change at local, regional, and statewide levels and through
national coalitions. Ms. Gross has led ERASE Racism to prominence as a champion of fair housing, heightening public understanding of the context of structural racism as it relates to housing discrimination and segregation. Ms. Gross started in 2016 the statewide campaign that led in 2019 to New York’s enactment of a ban on housing discrimination against people who depend on legal non-wage sources of income to pay for their rent.
That campaign, later co-led by ERASE Racism and three other organizations, grew to include more than 100 organizations. As a result, it is now illegal in New York for landlords – except in owner-occupied buildings with two or fewer units – to turn away tenants who receive any form of legal non-wage income such as alimony, Section 8 housing support and other public benefits for veterans and people with disabilities. She also initiated research on racial discrimination in the rental housing market on Long Island that led to successful legal action against discriminatory real estate owners and managers in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties. That research provided a model for Newsday’s landmark 2019 study “Long Island Divided,” which used the same techniques to investigate racial discrimination in the homebuying market, and in turn prompted two public hearings on Long Island held jointly by three New York State Senate Committees in 2021.
Ms. Gross was invited to testify and offer recommendations at both joint hearings, and those hearings led to the enactment in 2021 of nine State fair housing laws. Ms. Gross has similarly provided the vision and programmatic leadership for ERASE Racism’s Education Equity Initiative. She has led educational and policy advocacy campaigns to promote culturally responsive-sustaining education and educator diversity. She has created such ERASE Racism services as Education Equity Seminars and Leadership Development Programs for educators, students and parents. She supervised the creation of the award-winning documentary “A Tale of Two Schools: Race and Education on Long Island.” She has also brought to public attention ERASE Racism’s authoritative research on school segregation, including creating an infographic revealing that segregation in Long Island’s public schools is still growing. To enhance public aware-
ness and the context in which policymaking takes place, Ms. Gross has elevated public engagement on the topic of racial equity in the region. She has frequently delivered speeches to government, nonprofit, and business groups, colleges and universities. She has published opinion articles and appears regularly in influential media. She is a member of the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council and the Board of Directors of the State of New York Mortgage Agency, as well as other boards. Ms. Gross was hired in 2001 by the Long Island Community Foundation, where she conceived and launched the ERASE Racism Initiative, which became an independent not-for-profit corporation in 2004. She graduated from Boston University, where she earned her MSW with a focus on community organizing, policy, planning and non-profit management. n

We’re staying connected with our members and providing them with secure, convenient access to their accounts anytime, anywhere. Since the start of the pandemic, we’ve seen an acceleration of the trend toward our clients using digital for more and more of their everyday banking needs. Clients can deposit or send money online, apply digitally for a loan, and even receive guidance from Erica, the bank’s AI-driven virtual financial assistant. Innovation is key to the Bank of America’s growth strategy, and we will continue harnessing the power of technology to deliver cutting-edge digital services. Reducing carbon emissions will also be central to our business in the coming years. Bank of America is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 by making our operations and supply chain carbonneutral, deploying capital to low-carbon, sustainable business initiatives, and collaborating with leaders in business, government, and the nonprofit sector to advance a sustainable

Online marketplaces, which have helped many businesses keep their doors open through the challenges of the coronavirus, can boost sales and create loyal customers. In addition, digital tools for payroll, scheduling, and banking can help save time, lower costs, and improve performance. Embracing sustainability can help combat climate change while saving your business money. Improving energy efficiency, decreasing water and paper use, and switching to renewable energy can all decrease costs while improving the environment. Owners should examine their operations and supply chain to identify areas to improve efficiency and reduce waste, saving money while helping preserve the environment for future generations. n

March of 2020 brought many changes to the ways our firm interfaces and collaborates as a team and with our clients. When the workforce became largely remote, and businesses had to adjust their operations, leveraging technology became even more critical. Janover established the infrastructure and adopted key technology solutions prior to COVID-19. The firm continually evaluates innovative solutions to not only improve the efficiency of the firm’s operations but to better service our clients. As our clients faced unique
challenges throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the professionals at Janover quickly responded by creating a CARES Act/ COVID-19 task force to advise and help clients navigate programs, including PPP and ERC. Our firm consulted with businesses and provided guidance to help them claim benefits to meet their cash flow, maintain their workforce and handle other critical challenges. What advice would you give other business owners? Be proactive, prepare as much as possible, and rely on others for things outside your core business so you can focus on evolving and growing your business. While you can’t anticipate all challenges, staying on top of industry trends and issues and being ready to pivot can better position your business for the future. Find a network of professionals to support your business and partner with them to handle your various needs, whether that be tax and accounting, legal, banking, etc. n

Paule T. Pachter, A.C.S.W., L.M.S.W. CEO | Long Island Cares, inc. - The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank
Paule T. Pachter is chief executive officer of Long Island Cares, Inc. — The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank. Founded by the late Harry Chapin, a Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter and social activist, Long Island Cares brings together all available resources for the benefit of the hungry and food insecure on Long Island. Since joining Long Island Cares in 2008, Pachter has increased the organization’s budget from $8.5 million to more than $21 million in 2022. The organizations’ workforce has been expanded from 35 staff
members to 64 employees. Long Island Cares’ footprint on Long Island has grown substantially from one location in Hauppauge in 2008 to eight locations in Freeport, Lindenhurst, Huntington Station, Hampton Bays, Bethpage and two sites in Hauppauge including their new Center for Community Engagement. Music has always been a part of Long Island Cares’ history since being founded by a musician and world-renowned recording artist. Pachter has seized that history by engaging such luminaries as Billy Joel, Bruce Springs-
teen, Judy Collins, Rascal Flatts, Dee Snyder, the Band Perry and many others to support the work of Long Island Cares. The work of Long Island Cares has garnered the attention of numerous media outlets, as well as the respect of elected officials at all levels of government. Nancy Duzinas of the Rauch Foundation has described Long Island Cares as, “an historic organization.” Pachter is on the faculty of St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue, New York, where he teaches a second-year graduate course, “Executive Leadership and Models of Innovation.” He is also the immediate past chair of Feeding New York State, the association representing 10 Feeding America food banks in the Empire State. Pachter is a graduate of the Adelphi University School of Social Work and has held several positions within Long Island’s human services community, including deputy commissioner of the Nassau County Department of Mental Health. He is credited with influencing the passage of New York State’s social work parity legislation, and in 1985, Pachter was selected “Nassau County Social Worker of the Year” by the NASW Nassau Division in recognition of his work in the areas of
social work and political action, and for his contributions to the field of mental health. Pachter is a member of the Board of Directors of the Long Island Association and the HIALI.
In 2019 and 2020, he was inducted into the “Long Island Business Hall of Fame” by Long Island Business News. Long Island Business News has described Pachter as a leader “who has transformed the
Long Island Business News has described Pachter as a leader “who has transformed the work of a food bank to focus on the root causes of hunger and food insecurity by developing some of the most innovative approaches to helping people in need.” He is also a 2006 recipient of the “New York State Liberty Medal,” the state’s highest honor, for his work in relief efforts associated with Hurricane Katrina. Pachter received the Town of Hempstead’s “Make a Difference Medal” in 2012, for his work in responding to Super Storm Sandy, and again in 2020 for his leadership in responding to COVID-19. In 2016, he was named one of Long Island’s Top CEO’s by Long Island Business News, and in 2018, the Long Island Press named him to their “Power List of Long Island Change Makers.”
work of a food bank to focus on the root causes of hunger and food insecurity by developing some of the most innovative approaches to helping people in need.” As part of his vision, Pachter has redefined the role of a food bank, to offer direct services that bring Long Island Cares closer to people in need, expands mobile operations and builds a network of community resources to increase distribution and capacity. This resulted in the organization receiving Feeding America’s prestigious “Hunger’s Hope Award” in 2011. n

Dr. David Podwall
President-Elect | Nassau County Medical Society
David Podwall, M.D. is a managing partner of Neurological Associates of Long Island, and he currently serves as the President-Elect of the Nassau County Medical Society. He is a graduate of Cornell University where he earned a Bachelor of Science with Distinction in Biology. While at Cornell, he spent a semester working on health care policy on the personal staff of Congressman Lee Hamilton (D-Ind.) His Doctor of Medicine degree was granted by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. After finishing his intern-
ship at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, he completed his neurology residency and Clinical Neurophysiology fellowship at Columbia Presbyterian. While at Columbia, he had multiple publications including two reviews of Diabetic Neuropathy. He is Board Certified in Neurology and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. In 2004, Dr. Podwall joined Neurological Associates of Long Island, in Lake Success. His senior managing partner, Dr. Jeffrey Kessler founded Neurological Associates 40 years ago, and since then it has grown into the largest private neurological practice on the North Shore.
There are 11 neurologists providing both general and subspecialty neurological care. Extensive on-site diagnostic testing allows for same-day evaluation including both state of the art closed and open MRI machines. As the director of Clinical Trials, Dr. Podwall serves as the principal investigator on multiple clinical trials in the area of Alzheimer’s. He was recognized for outstanding teaching by the Department of Medicine at North Shore University Hospital. Dr. Podwall was recognized as one of New York’s “Top Doctors” by Castle Connolly as well as New York Magazine’s “Best Doctors.” He is an Attending physician at Northshore University Hospital, Manhasset, as well as St. Francis, Roslyn. Since medical school, Dr. Podwall has believed in the importance of having physician input into state and national health care policy. In various positions, in both the Medical Society of the State of New York as well as the
American Medical Association, Dr. Podwall has strived to maintain the sanctity of the physician-patient relationship from undue outside interference or regulation. In 2015, he was also elected to the NCMS board. In 2020, while the world was turned upside down by a pandemic, Dr. Podwall with his partners had to quickly reorganize his office and prepare for the looming shutdown. All physicians had to pivot to telemedicine. Each component of the office from nurses to secretaries to billers had to find a way to work remotely and cohesively. This experience helped enlighten Dr. Podwall when working with the leadership of both the NCMS and MSSNY to inform lawmakers on the needs of health care providers in New York. In order for telemedicine to work, insurance companies needed to start paying for these services. Like many physicians, he was treating sick patients, who refused to go the hospital without the ability to see them in person or obtain tests.
This was the rationale for historic medical malpractice protections. Even when he was able to start seeing patients again in the office, his office had difficulty obtaining adequate PPE. The NCMS lobbied both state and local officials to create avenues for health care providers to obtain the necessary PPE. This advocating for physicians and patients was supercharged during the dark early days of the pandemic but is nothing new for the medical society. For over one hundred years, the Nassau County Medical Society has been in the forefront of physician and patient advocacy. Dr. Podwall appreciates being an honoree of Blank Slate Media’s Top Business Leaders of Nassau County, he shares his achievements both with his partners at Neurological Associates of Long Island and the leadership of the Nassau County Medical Society. Dr. Podwall lives in Great Neck with his wife Barbara, a radiologist at Northwell, as well as their two children. n

Charles A. Riley II, PhD Director Nassau County Museum of Art |
Charles A. Riley II, PhD is in his fifth year as director of the Nassau County Museum of Art, where he has curated shows ranging from The Jazz Age to True Colors, The Eighties and Energy to the current hit show, The Art of Music (featuring many of the most important instruments as well as artists in the history of the relationship between art and music). Since taking the helm at the museum, he has turned around its finances, balancing the budget for the first time in history, built attendance, expanded the programs both in-person and online, and created a master plan for its future, including a cultural landscape plan for the nationally listed arboretum. As important as the operational progress, he has labored
to improve the institution’s reputation for transparency, social responsibility (including stewardship of the 145 acres of the nature preserve) and community service. Keeping the grounds open throughout the pandemic, and re-opening the museum in July 2020 for the benefit of those who needed great art in their lives (many of the visitors are first responders and medical staff from local hospitals), he budgeted in order to make sure his staff remained in their jobs. This meant calling upon more than two hundred volunteers, local residents and many retirees who are part of the museum community, to make sure every gallery was open during the full operating hours of the museum, the only museum in
New York state for many months to be fully open. To attract visitors from around the world, Riley has borrowed masterworks from many of the most important private collections in the world (including works by Degas, Renoir, Picasso, Matisse and many other masters), bringing international recognition to the museum as it rises to prominence. Like other regional museums that have made their mark on the basis of the quality of their shows, the Nassau Museum is gaining attention from the other museums, collectors, critics and galleries that hold power in the so-called “art world” not just in New York but in Europe and Asia as well. Many of these prominent power players are lenders of art to the shows and supporters of the museum. At the same time, as a thirty-year veteran of the classroom, he has kept the museum on track to serve thousands of Nassau schoolchildren, both in person and virtually, fulfilling its mission as a cultural hub for the region. The director’s seminar, held after hours with refreshments, is routinely sold out, attracting artists, writers, musicians, scientists and local intellectuals every season. Prominent scholars and artists are involved in the lectures, forums, concerts and other programs that accompany each new
exhibition. Riley has commissioned masterworks of contemporary art for several of the shows, including the current “walk-in Gamelatron” that is charming visitors in the current show (it is a robotic gamelan created for the gallery) as well as an installation that re-created the aurora borealis inside the building and a spectacular cascading scroll that dramatized the emotional experience of immigration. These commissions bring internationally famous talent to the museum in highly original, major works that are enjoyed by thousands of visitors and documented in catalogues with art historical essays and installation photographs. Riley is internationally known as an expert on the economics of the arts, having written a book and many articles on museum administration and the “Bilbao effect,” which is the measurable stimulus that a firstclass museum gives to a region as demonstrated by the Guggenheim Museum’s impact on the local economy of Bilbao, Spain. He has been involved in the founding of two museums (in Switzerland and Taiwan) and a consultant to the city of Nanjing on the role of an art museum in the development of a “knowledge economy,” including job creation and retention as well as the positive impact of a world-
class museum on local real estate values, tourism revenues (including retail, restaurant and hotels) and job training. At work on a similar strategic plan for the Nassau County Museum of Art and its positive economic effects on Long Island, Riley believes that the best tactic in the present climate, taking into account not just the pandemic but rising inflation and uncertainties regarding government deficits, is targeted growth. Along those lines, he has seen the revenues at the museum (which has had excellent attendance) exceed their 2019 levels and is pursuing new ways to keep that upward trend going. Riley is the author of 39 books and hundreds of magazine articles. Before joining the museum full time, he had curated exhibitions in Taiwan, Berlin, Amsterdam and New York and covered the arts for several major international publications. He has been a professor at both City University of New York and Clarkson University, where he taught operations management and corporate social responsibility. A native of Manhasset, he represented Nassau County in the state tournaments as a hockey player before playing varsity at Hotchkiss and Princeton (and still plays on a men’s team). n

Dr. Adhi Sharma
President | Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital
Dr. Adhi Sharma, an experienced Emergency Medicine physician-leader, was selected last year by the hospital’s board of directors to assume the role of president of Mount Sinai South Nassau, the flagship Long Island hospital of the Mount Sinai Health System. Dr. Sharma was previously Executive Vice President of Clinical and Professional Services and Chief Medical Officer. The hospital serves more than 900,000 residents along the South Shore and is a re-
gional medical center known for stroke, cardiac, trauma and cancer care. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Sharma helped guide the hospital’s response to the highly contagious and potentially deadly disease. The hospital treated more than 9,700 patients while constantly working to ensure staff safety. Dr. Sharma also was among a key group of clinical leaders who kept the community informed by briefing the media directly.
A member of the American College of Emergency Medicine and American College of Medical Toxicology, serving on the practice and education committees respectively, Dr. Sharma launched his career in medicine at Elmhurst Hospital Center, where he was the Director of the Division of Toxicology and an attending physician in the emergency department from 2001-2005. Dr. Sharma is a graduate of New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York, and completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Jacobi/Montefiore Medical Centers. He also completed a fellowship in Medical Toxicology at NYU/Bellevue. He is board certified in both Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology. Dr. Sharma also holds a master’s degree in Health Care Administration from George Washington University in Washington D.C. How do you see your business evolving due to the changing times?
The COVID-19 pandemic has opened the door for hospitals and healthcare providers to change the way we deliver care. Telemedicine is one good example. Telemedicine is now available across the spectrum of our organization, including our physician practices and community-based specialty care centers. It has substantially increased patients’ access to physician specialists; eliminated the scheduling of time-consuming physician office visits for routine check-ups and prescription renewals; and allowed for remote access of results for diagnostic tests, including lab work and radiology. Insurance carriers have also been partners in the growth of telemedicine, which they now pay at the same rate as a traditional patient visit. This became possible in part because the government removed certain restrictions that had held us all back. This genie is not going back in the bottle. Telemedicine is convenient, patients and providers like it and it expands access to health care.
Also, the pandemic showed everyone that we need to maintain hospital capacity and depth of services, so we are able to expand when needed. The trend previously had been to reduce hospital capacity across the country in an effort to contain costs. We support efficiency in health care, but the pandemic proved that we also need to be ready when the need arises. And you can’t build hospital and staff capacity overnight. What advice would you give to other business owners? The pandemic has taken a toll on everyone. Give your employees the room, support and flexibility they need to adjust to the new post-pandemic reality. Employers should put an emphasis at this time on employee well-being to make sure their employees have what they need to return to work. We are very aware in health care of the long-term impact of the pandemic on our workforce. For many, it’s been traumatic. We will continue to make that a priority. n

In addition, Kathy leads and pro-
motes science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning and looks to create opportunities for youth in her local community. Kathy joined National Grid in 1989 as a Conservation Energy Specialist. In her 30 years plus with National Grid, she has held management positions in various departments including Marketing, Sales and Major Accounts. Kathy was recently was highlighted in the City & State’s
Long Island Power 100, Long Island list which highlights the 100 most powerful figures of Island and in 2021. She was also recognized by Long Island Business News as one of the 50 Top Business Leaders on Long Island in 2017. Kathy serves on the Board of Directors of Vision Long Island where she supports Smart Growth and brings her expertise of commercial business and a variety of National Grid programs. She is also on the Advisory Board for New Ground Inc., which provides education and assistance to families and veterans caught in the vicious cycle of homelessness. Kathy also served on the board of Girls Inc. of Long Island for a total of nine years, four of which she was Co-chair. Girls Inc. of Long Island encourages all girls to be, strong, smart, and bold. The organization is close to her heart especially since she raised two daughters, and often speaks about the importance of
encouraging young girls at an impressionable age to strive for their best. She wants every girl to be able to have the same valuable opportunities that she had growing up on Long Island. Kathy has empowered girls to explore careers in STEAM including in the energy and engineering sector. Kathy is a long-time resident of Lindenhurst where she lives with her husband Bill and two dogs. How do you see your business evolving due to changing times? While National Grid has had a long, proud legacy of community involvement, we see an opportunity to have an even greater impact in the communities where we live and work. As we continue our efforts to bring the clean energy future to our customers, we recognize our responsibility to ensure nobody is left behind in that transition. From neighborhood beautification to workforce development, we’re thinking beyond
our conventional energy delivery services and helping to create a more equitable future for every customer and neighborhood we serve. To get there, we must create the workforce that will help build New York’s clean energy infrastructure. What advice would you give other business owners? My advice is to remain flexible, adapt and pivot to the changing times and “think outside the box”. In addition, businesses need to look at ways to incorporate energy efficiency and clean energy to run their business efficiently. This will not only reduce their operating expenses but also make Long Island a greener place to live. Businesses must invest in their workforce, provide training, and look for ways to attract and retain young talent. Long Island is a beautiful place to live and raise a family and we all have a responsibility to play a role and give young people a reason to stay. n
