Welcome to the Lowcountry

unny and beautiful, South Carolina’s Lowcountry is home to long stretches of sandy beaches, great shopping and some of the best dining in the South. People know this area for its pristine beaches and worldclass golf. And believe us, you’ll find those here. But when visitors arrive with their families to explore the Lowcountry, they find this area to be more hidden gem than polished stone. And they return, again and again, to savor the Lowcountry experience. Indeed, you’ll find a lot more here than tee times and one-ofa-kind boutiques. You’ll find local culinary favorites like Frogmore Stew and fried shrimp burgers. You’ll see living history in the form of Gullah communities like St. Helena Island, where residents have kept alive a language and culture that has roots in the days of slavery. And you’ll drive down quiet country roads that end in spectacular marsh-view sunsets. stay connected • get social • join the conversation Follow us on Twitter, like us on Facebook, and visit us online for the latest in local news and events. www.islandpacket.com • www.beaufortgazette.com

Old Oyster Factory is delicious waterfront dining Some say a delicious seafood dinner is best capped with an indulgent dessert. For others, watching a glowing sun drift below the horizon to a soundtrack of shorebirds and lapping water is treat enough. At the Old Oyster Factory on Hilton Head Island, locals and visitors have been indulging in picturesque waterfront dining and a menu of fresh-caught seafood, juicy steaks, and delicious desserts — including the decadent Chocolate Fantasia — for more than 25 years.

Rules to remember No fireworks or fires on the beach

U-turn (but pay attention to road signs, some roundabouts have different rules) Do not stop or change lanes while in the roundabout.

It’s illegal to set off fireworks anywhere on Hilton Head Island without a permit. If you’re caught, it’s a misdemeanor and could result in a $500 fine. This confuses tourists at times because it’s legal to sell fireworks in Beaufort County. On that note, building fires for anything other than cooking on Hilton Head beaches is also illegal.

No drinking on the beach

It is illegal to drink alcohol on Hilton Head’s public beaches. Possession of alcohol or open containers of alcohol could result in a $500 fine.

Don’t take the sea creatures

As a general rule of thumb: don’t touch or take any living creature/ thing from the beaches. It’s illegal to remove, harm or harass any live beach fauna (sea turtles, sand dollars, conchs, starfish, etc.) You could get fined $500.

No shark fishing from shore

It’s illegal to bait or fish for shark from the beach, or anywhere 400 yards from the

Don’t feed the gators

shore. Fishing in designated swimming areas on the beaches is banned from April- Sept. from sun up to sun down.

Know the roundabout rules

It’s pretty much impossible to get around Hilton Head or Bluffton without driving through a roundabout. Love them or hate them, they’re everywhere. Stick with these rules for two lane roundabouts: Yield to drivers in all lanes inside the roundabout Drive the outer lane if you are making a right turn Use the inner lane if you are making a left turn, driving straight through, or making a

When alligators are fed by humans, they associate humans as a food resource, which makes them aggressive. It’s illegal and very dangerous to feed alligators. It could result in a fine or 30 days in jail, or someone getting seriously injured.

No liquor sales on Sundays

While this law won’t get you in trouble, it might be good to know if you’re planning on a Sunday Funday during vacation. You can’t buy hard liquor on Sundays in South Carolina. However, you can buy beer and wine from grocery stores/ gas stations in Beaufort County on Sundays. Here are a few extra laws to keep in mind: Sleeping on the beach is illegal between midnight and 6 a.m. No driving on the beach. No horses on the beach.

Bicycles Here are laws every driver and biker should know

WHO HAS THE RIGHT-OF-WAY? State law indicates that motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crosswalks, but it’s not always the case, depending on who arrives at the intersection first. This means: Motorists have the right-of-way at crossings over folks waiting to cross, but must yield to bicyclists/ pedestrians that they encounter who may have already entered the crosswalk.

RIDE WITH TRAFFIC Cyclists who want to use the road have the right to do so, but they must ride with the flow of traffic, according to South Carolina law. Pedestrians, on the other hand, are safer on the left side of the pathways and roads, where they can easily see approaching traffic. FOLLOW ALL SIGNS Those little stop signs next to bike paths are not for decoration.

staff

This means: Pathway signs are official traffic control devices as defined in the Federal Highway Administration’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and state law requires bicyclists and pedestrians to comply with all official traffic control devices and applicable laws concerning right-of-way.

LIGHT UP YOUR BIKE Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you decide to ride at night, South Carolina law says you must have a front light and a red reflector. Some drivers have enough trouble seeing bikes during the day, so don’t assume they see you at night. That goes for pedestrians, too. COMMUNICATE South Carolina law requires cyclists on the road to use hand signals when turning or stopping. If you’re riding on the road, make eye contact with drivers, be alert ,and predictable. On pathways, bicyclists should communicate with approaching pedestrians and be aware of their surroundings and always pass on the left. BE COURTEOUS It’s against the law for motorists to harass or throw things at cyclists, and it’s also dangerous, rude, and could cost you a $250 fine or 30 days in jail. SUMMER 2018

Sea turtles

Loggerhead sea turtles nest on our beaches each summer. Here’s how you can ensure they have a safe and successful nesting season Turn off the light

Turn off lights if you’re near the beach. And no flashlights. After the young turtles hatch, they navigate to the ocean by following the slope of the beach and skylight reflected off the ocean. Artificial light can disorient the hatchlings and cause them to move inland, where they often die.

It’s illegal. Feeding or touching turtles in any way — including shining a light on them —i s considered a disturbance and is illegal. Federal penalties can include large fines up to $15,000 and jail time.

Keep the beaches litter-free

Lights out. If your house is visible from the beach, turn off your outdoor lights by 10 p.m. from May until the end of October. If any of your interior lights are visible from or cast light on the beach from the beach, close your blinds at 10 p.m. or turn them off.

Pick up and throw away your trash in the proper garbage cans and remove your belongings for the beach each day. Never leave beach umbrellas, tents, chairs or other accessories on the beach overnight. Nesting female turtles may get tangled in them and they can often disorient the hatchlings.

Leave them alone

Report your sightings

Leave sea turtles nests alone. In order not to disrupt the nesting process, respect sea turtles by observing them from a distance on the beach. Do not touch or remove any eggs from their nests.

Report dead or injured sea turtles and nest disturbances to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources by calling 1-800922-5431. Report sightings of live, healthy turtles here.

don’t leave

booby traps

Digging and building sandcastles is part of what makes a great breach day. And while you might want to leave your masterpiece for others to admire, these creations can be death traps for sea turtles.

Why? A nesting sea turtle emerges from the ocean and attempts to make its way up the beach, but a giant sandcastle startles the turtle, forcing it to return to the ocean without laying its eggs. Do your part. Please remember to fill in any holes and flatten your beach art when you leave. The turtles will thank you.

Drift away to unique Daufuskie Island This summer, discover an island that lies not far away, but is far from expected. All are welcome on Daufuskie Island. The beachcombers and sun-seekers, history buffs and stargazers. The lovers of fresh seafood and live music, old pastimes and new friends. The island is a retreat for free-sprits who race away from routine, rise with the tide and live to feel the sun on their faces and the sand between their toes.

Time and the outside world drift away with the tide on Daufuskie Island. While Daufuskie is only minutes from Hilton Head Island, it feels like you’re stepping back in time. Most of the area remains dirt road, revealing an island that is rich in history and nature. The island is a rare find that can only be visited by private boat or public ferries. With ferry service from Hilton Head and Savannah, it’s easier than ever to discover all that makes Daufuskie different. Take a narrated ferry cruise or enjoy free day dockage at Freeport Marina, where you can enjoy live music and sunsets on the Cooper River. Come hungry and try tasty originals at the Old Daufuskie Crab Co., such as our secret recipe deviled crab and one-of-a-kind Scrap Iron cocktail. You can also shop our “not so general” General Store. ‘Saturday Night Fever’ will have you dancing

Tickets for “Saturday Night Fever” can be purchased by calling the Arts Center Box Office at 843-842-2787 or online at www.artshhi.com. Preview performances June 2021 are $40 for adults; $27 for children. Regular performances June 22-July 29 are $50 for adults; $37 for children. The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina is located at 14 Shelter Cove Lane, Hilton Head Island.

Put on your boogie shoes and head over to the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina for one of the most-loved dance stories of all time. “Saturday Night Fever” takes the stage June 20 to July 29. It’s the late ’70s in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Tony Manero — a young man with a not-so-great job but an extraordinary ability to dance — has only one ambition in life: to become the disco king. When he meets the lovely Stephanie, who also dreams of a world beyond their hometown, they decide to train together for a dance competition and their lives begin to change forever. Based on the film that became a cultural phenomenon, the electrifying score is packed with legendary hits from the Bee Gees including the classics “Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever,” “Jive Talking,” “You Should Be Dancing” and “How Deep is Your Love?” Fueled by its music, this contemporary retelling captures the energy, passion and life-changing moments that have thrilled audiences with both its soundtrack and its story. Now, a new generation of dancers meets a new generation of theatergoers to catch the fever with the soaring sounds and pulsating rhythms of this coming-of-age disco fantasy. Please be advised that, similar to the movie, “Saturday Night Fever” contains adult language and situations.

Animals are not permitted on the beach between 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Must be on a leash between 10 a.m.-5 p.m. April 1 through Thursday before Memorial Day; and between 10 a.m. -5 p.m. Tuesday after Labor Day through Sept. 30. Must be on leash or under positive voice control at all other times. Must be on a leash at all times at Fish Haul Beach Park. Persons in control of animals on the beach are required to remove and properly dispose of the animal’s excrement. It is illegal to allow pets to chase or harass wildlife.

BEACH SAFETY

Protect your skin with sunscreen and reapply at least every two hours, but if you are more prone to burning or in the water a lot, reapply more often. Drink lots of water as your body needs to stay cool in the hot sun. Drink water even if you are not thirsty. Thirst is the first sign of dehydration. Watch for signs of heat stroke that often comes when a person is dehydrated and in the sun for extended periods of time. When sweating doesn’t help cool the body anymore, the body’s temperature rises and a person may feel hot, have a rapid pulse, and have flushed red skin. Should this happen, move the person to a cool place and wrap them in wet sheets or towels, or place ice packs on their wrists, ankles, armpits, and neck to cool them down. Keep watch on their breathing and keep them lying down out of the sun. Call 911 if symptoms worsen. Make sure to wear appropriate foot protection as many times the sand can be extremely hot and can burn your feet. Beyond just the hot sand there is glass, shells, or sticks that can cut you as well as the occasional crab.

do the stingray

shuffle

You might sprint to the beach, but be sure to slow down and start shuffling as soon as your feet hit the water. Why? In water as shallow as 10 or 12 inches, stingrays hide by burying themselves under a thin layer of sand, trying to remain unnoticed. Shuffle your feet. The best way to make sure stingrays steer clear of your feet is to slide your feet along the sand instead of taking big steps. The shuffling sends vibrations that scare away stingrays in the immediate vicinity, thus you won’t accidentally step on one.

days, so you’ll want to visit during the week or on a Saturday. Many eateries are open on Sundays and some, such as The Corner Perk, The Cottage, and Captain Woody’s, offer a Sunday brunch.

The Church of the Cross is a living piece of Bluffton’s history. Designed by renowned architect Edward Brickell White and built over 150 years ago, the church is listed on National Register of Historic Places. The congregation takes advantage of the church’s prime location near the May River, often holding sunrise services outside. Recently, dozens gathered to be baptized in the river.

Farmers Market of Bluffton

Fresh, locally grown vegetables, fruits, flowers, plants and herbs abound at the Farmers Market of Bluffton, a weekly community event. This family friendly market showcases local growers, local food vendors, local entertainment, local community causes and local information about the Bluffton area.

The South Carolina coast is famous for its seafood — shrimp, crabs, and especially oysters. The Bluffton Oyster Factory is keeping Lowcountry traditions alive as the state’s last remaining hand-shucked oyster operation. The Bluffton Oyster Factory is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Just north of the factory is the Oyster Factory Park. The park includes a public dock, benches, restrooms, walkways, and parking area.

Here you’ll find a mixture of unique shopping and dining establishments, colorful art galleries, and old homes all close to the pristine May River. Many shops are closed on Sun-

Have an ultimate day the Outside way You’ve shopped till you dropped and dined ’till you almost popped. So what’s left to do on vacation? That’s easy: Get outside. Outside Hilton Head, the Lowcountry’s leading outdoor outfitters, has been connecting folks with the nature, history and culture for more than 35 years. And like a creek at low tide, there’s always something new to experience outdoors on one of their signature excursions: The Ultimate Lowcountry Day.

The Pau Hana is a 55-foot sailing catamaran 28

The fully customized private adventure is designed to give families and groups a variety of options to make memories. The outings are available in full- and half-day packages. No experience is necessary and each Ultimate Day includes the boat, captain, necessary equipment, and light snacks and refreshments. There are more than a dozen experiences to enjoy, ranging from historic tours, boating, kayaking, and dolphin watching to stand-up paddleboarding, tubing and private island exploration. If you can’t agree on how to divvy up the day, the Outside team can schedule separate outings for parents and children. Another unique offering from Outside is The Pau Hana, a 55-foot sailing catamaran for the Ultimate Sailing Experience. Outside offers daily sunset cruises, private parties and amazing Fireworks Cruises every Tuesday in the summer.

Separate outings available for adults and children

“Each day is completely customizable. Folks can do as much or as little as they want,” said Mike Overton, president of Outside Hilton Head. “We get people to places they would normally never see, even folks who have lived here for years. Our goal is that people leave wanting more.” The five-hour Ultimate Lowcountry Day is $575; the seven-hour day is $795. Both prices are for up to six people. Each additional adult and child is an extra charge. 800-686-0153. www.outsidehiltonhead.com. SUMMER 2018
