Welcome to the Lowcountry
S
unny and beautiful, South Carolina’s Lowcountry is home to long stretches of sandy beaches, great shopping and some of the best dining in the South. People know this area for its pristine beaches and worldclass golf. And believe us, you’ll find those here. But when visitors arrive with their families to explore the Lowcountry, they find this area to be more hidden gem than polished stone. And they return, again and again, to savor the Lowcountry experience. Indeed, you’ll find a lot more here than tee times and one-ofa-kind boutiques. You’ll find local culinary favorites like Frogmore Stew and fried shrimp burgers. You’ll see living history in the form of Gullah communities like St. Helena Island, where residents have kept alive a language and culture that has roots in the days of slavery. And you’ll drive down quiet country roads that end in spectacular marsh-view sunsets. stay connected • get social • join the conversation Follow us on Twitter, like us on Facebook, and visit us online for the latest in local news and events. www.islandpacket.com • www.beaufortgazette.com

Rules to remember
No fireworks or fires on the beach
from grocery stores/ gas stations in Beaufort County on Sundays.
It’s illegal to set off fireworks anywhere on Hilton Head Island without a permit. If you’re caught, it’s a misdemeanor and could result in a $500 fine. This confuses tourists at times because it’s legal to sell fireworks in Beaufort County. On that note, building fires for anything other than cooking on Hilton Head beaches is also illegal.
No drinking on the beach
It is illegal to drink alcohol on Hilton Head’s public beaches. Possession of alcohol or open containers of alcohol could result in a $500 fine.
Don’t take the sea creatures
Know the roundabout rules
It’s pretty much impossible to get around Hilton Head or Bluffton without driving through a roundabout. Love them or hate them, they’re everywhere. Stick with these rules for two lane roundabouts: Yield to drivers in all lanes inside the roundabout Drive the outer lane if you are making a right turn Use the inner lane if you are making a left turn, driving straight through, or making a U-turn (but pay attention to road signs, some roundabouts have different rules) Do not stop or change lanes while in the roundabout.
staff
Don’t feed the gators
When alligators are fed by humans, they associate humans as a food resource, which makes them aggressive. It’s illegal and very dangerous to feed alligators. It could result in a fine or 30 days in jail, or someone getting seriously injured.
No liquor sales on Sundays
While this law won’t get you in trouble, it might be good to know if you’re planning on a Sunday Funday during vacation. You can’t buy hard liquor on Sundays in South Carolina. However, you can buy beer and wine
As a general rule of thumb: don’t touch or take any living creature/ thing from the beaches. It’s illegal to remove, harm or harass any live beach fauna (sea turtles, sand dollars, conchs, starfish, etc.) You could get fined $500.
No shark fishing from shore
It’s illegal to bait or fish for shark from the beach, or anywhere 400 yards from the shore. Fishing in designated swimming areas on the beaches is banned from April- Sept. from sun up to sun down. Here are a few extra laws to keep in mind: Sleeping on the beach is illegal between midnight and 6 a.m. No driving on the beach. No horses on the beach.

October: The Lowcountry’s grandest celebration
BY DAVID LAUDERDALE dlauderdale@islandpacket.com
O
ctober is the best time to be in the Lowcountry. Granted, Oct. 1 will never compete with New Year’s Eve or the Fourth of July. But when you live in the Lowcountry, the arrival of October sets off the grandest celebration of them all. October is ours. Most of the minivans of summer are back in some concrete jungle, now hauling kids to Montessori schools and soccer fields. The August heat that has us gasping for breath melts into the golden afternoons and brisk mornings of October. The cold winds of January and the no-seeums of spring are quickly forgotten when we bathe in October’s gentle warmth. Our visiting birds are hanging out for a few last weeks of glory before resuming their miracle journeys around the globe. The shrimp are kicking in the creeks, their eyes shining like red lasers in the light of our john boats.
12
in the lowcountry , we don ’t need the celebratory champagne and fireworks . just give us october . Now is the best time to get the plump crabs that look like blue, green and red folk art as they stupidly cling to a muddy chicken neck and get scooped into our nets. A bowl of she crab soup and a warm roll make October worth the long wait. Our friends come home from their escapes to places like Flat Rock, Highlands, Saluda or Tryon. I say these are the ones who passed the IQ test. They scurried to the Carolina mountains as soon as the licks of our summer sun got so hot even the Baptist preachers couldn’t get anybody scared of hell. We welcome them with the “snowbirds” floating down from Canada. It’s comforting to know that this is as close as we’ll get EXPERIENCE
to a snow drift. And a little variety around the Wednesday night dinner table at church never hurt anyone, eh? They’re here in time for the State Fair and Saturdays crammed with college football games that are bigger than life. But in our October marsh, things are more peaceful. Snowy egrets gliding into the green Spartina grass that the season is painting gold never seem to care about such pain and suffering. October also brings weekend festivals to every hamlet. And it’s when we get to see how the other half lives, when our Lowcountry mansions, plantations and gardens are opened to the public. The October tours are fundraisers for good causes, such as the Historic Beaufort Foundation and the Edisto Island Museum. In the Lowcountry, we don’t need the celebratory champagne and fireworks. Just give us October. Follow columnist David Lauderdale at twitter.com/ ThatsLauderdale. FALL 2017

History is alive on Daufuskie Island
Daufuskie Island in many areas looks just like it did 200 years ago. With no bridge to the mainland and only a few paved roads, the island is steeped in a simpler time. So when Wick Scurry had the chance to salvage two pieces of history, he took it. Scurry, captain and operator of Calibogue Cruises Tours & Adventures, purchased the Bloody Point Lighthouse and Silver Dew Winery in 2015 and transformed the building and the land. Overhauls included redecorating and

repainting the house, as well as tending to the landscape. The lighthouse is now a gift shop and a museum with old photos and island artifacts. Both the lighthouse and winery are now open for tours. One of the centerpieces of the museum includes a 300-year-old wooden canoe that was salvaged from the island’s waters and previously on display at the Old Daufuskie Crab Company at Freeport Marina. “Bloody Point Lighthouse is one of the most historic things on the island that’s still there,” Scurry said. Originally built on the ocean in 1883 to light the southern end of Daufuskie, the lighthouse consisted of two pieces: the front-range house light and a rear-range skeleton light that sat about a mile inland. Boaters would line up both lights to keep out of the Savannah River, Scurry said. Along with the lighthouse, Scurry is re-opening the Silver Dew Winery and will use grapes grown on the property to

make scuppernong wine. Paying homage to the island’s rich agricultural history, Scurry has also planted Sea Island cotton, Carolina Gold rice, and indigo on the land. “The plan is to pick grapes, make wine, harvest the rice, make dye, and let people pick the cotton if they want to,” Scurry said. “It will be a really cool experience.” To make a reservation with Calibogue Cruises, go to www.enjoydaufuskie.com or call 843-342-8687.
A coastal lifestyle is easy as 1, 2, 3
Cheryl Rieck Klippel has been living the coastal lifestyle since 1989. Cheryl jumped into the world of retail in 2001, opening a gift and home decor shop known as The Pelican’s Pouch. A few years later, Cheryl opened her second store, Island Girl, inspired by her daughter, Emily. The boutique carries on-trend clothing, shoes and accessories for women, children, and babies. Both stores are located in Coligny Plaza. Being the entrepreneur she is, Cheryl didn’t sit idle for very long and opened Watusi Café on Pope Avenue in 2012. Cheryl’s sister, Kerri Rieck, became a managing partner in 2015. Watusi has a well-earned reputation for serving delicious, healthier choice, gluten-free, and vegetarian options for breakfast and lunch until 3 p.m. Watusi recently expanded its hours to include dinner. As the duo created the evening menu, the sisters stayed true to their vision: a cozy environment where friends can gather to unwind from a busy day with a glass of wine, hand-crafted cocktail and a bite to eat. The menu is full of sharable plates that are reasonably priced, varied, and artfully presented. When asked where she spends the most time, Cheryl said, “I can be found any day at any one of my establishments, but I prefer to be the wizard behind the curtain.” 20

This is a sea turtle death trap
submitted
Digging and building sandcastles is part of what makes a great breach day. And while you might want to leave your masterpiece for others to admire, these creations can be death traps for sea turtles. A nesting sea turtle emerges from the ocean and attempts to make its way up the beach, but a giant sandcastle startles the turtle, forcing it to return to the ocean without laying its eggs. This is what Amber Kuehn, director of Spartina Sea Turtle Stranding Response, calls a “false crawl.” An increase in large sandcastles and holes — which can trap turtles — on area beaches are creating more opportunities for false crawls, Kuehn said. Please remember to fill in and flatten your beach art when you leave. The turtles will thank you.

greens shell park
The Greens Shell Community Park is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Go through the small gate into Amalie Cemetery, turn down the path to the right, and head to an elevated boardwalk and platform. From the platform, peer down on the earthen and oyster shell ring. The history: The large shell ring encloses about two acres of land and defines the outside of a Native American farming village dating back to 1335 AD. Stroll over the enclosed area to the platform across the way: You’re now above the other side of the ring and looking out over Skull Creek and the Intracoastal Waterway toward Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge.
The history: As you admire the view and varied habitats, consider the park's history: You’re standing on ground that Native Americans called home over 3,000 years ago; and in 1862, Mitchelville was founded here, built and self-governed by freed slaves — the first such community in America. Bicycles
Hilton Head is praised as a bicyclist’s paradise, with more than 60 miles of shared pathways and 12 miles of shoreline. Here are laws every driver and biker should know. Right-of-way laws are tricky
South Carolina law indicates that motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crosswalks, but it’s not always the case, depending on who arrives at the intersection first. This means: Motorists have the right-of-way at crossings over folks waiting to cross, but must yield to bicyclists/ pedestrians that they encounter who may have already entered the crosswalk.
Pedestrians stay left, cyclists right
Cyclists who want to use the road have the right to do so, but they must ride with the flow of traffic, according to South Carolina law. Pedestrians, on the other hand, are safer on the left side of the pathways and roads, where they can easily see approaching traffic.
Light up your bike
Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you decide to ride at night, South Carolina law says you must have a front light and a red reflector. Some drivers have enough trouble seeing bikes during the day, so don’t assume they see you at night. That goes for pedestrians, too. This means: If you’re biking, walking, or running anywhere on Hilton Head at night, do whatever you can to be visible. FALL 2017
Bicyclists must follow all signs
Those little stop signs next to bike paths are not for decoration. This means: Pathway signs are official traffic control devices as defined in the Federal Highway Administration’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and state law requires bicyclists and pedestrians to comply with all official traffic control devices and applicable laws concerning right-of-way.
Communicate
South Carolina law requires cyclists on the road to use hand signals when turning or stopping. If you’re riding on the road, make eye contact with drivers, be alert ,and predictable. On pathways, bicyclists should communicate with approaching pedestrians and be aware of their surroundings and always pass on the left. This means: When approaching slower pathway users from behind, it’s best to give an audible signal, such as ringing your bell or calling out, “Passing on your left,” to let other pathway users know of your approach and intentions.
Be courteous

Norris Richardson first brought his family to Hilton Head Island in 1955. He built the island’s first grocery store which, over the next 60 years, expanded and grew into Coligny Plaza. FALL 2017
“There was just a single lane of dirt road on the island when my father, Norris Richardson, arrived with an eye to build the island’s first grocery store,” recalls Coligny Plaza owner JR Richardson, whose father brought him to Hilton Head Island in 1955. “There was no bridge so we had to ship all the materials to build Forest Beach Market by barge.” JR added with a chuckle, “One of our first customers was Charles Fraser, a young man who was, at that time, building this place he called Sea Pines.” Over the next 60-plus years, Forest Beach Market would expand, forming the downtown for the tiny island. The area featured a barbershop, ice cream parlor, the island’s first pharmacy, and the south end’s first post office. The area was renamed Coligny and has continued the story of local store ownership throughout its history. Stores at Coligny, most of which are owned by Hilton Head Islanders, carry everything from one-of-a-kind finds to brand-name fashions. The large selection of restaurants offer up the best food and live music on the island. The center stage at Coligny also features entertainment seven nights a week through the summer. Oysters When the nights get longer and the temperatures begin dropping, that means it’s oyster season. The rule of thumb: Any month with an “R” in it means oyster season is here, so pull out your favorite shucking knife and dive in. Pearls of the Lowcountry: The oyster industry was the most valuable South Carolina fishery from the late 1880s to just after World War II. Oysters were responsible for 45 percent of the value of all South Carolina fisheries in 1902. Bluffton is home to South Carolina’s only operational oyster shucking plant. Located where Wharf Street runs into the water, the Bluffton Oyster Co. processes May River oysters. Oyster shuckers chisel the salty pearls from sharp clustered shells, just like generations before them.
In season: Oyster season opens Sept. 1 and closes May 15 annually, although the Department of Natural Resources can vary the season if conditions warrant.

Old Oyster Factory is delicious waterfront dining Some say a delicious seafood dinner is best capped with an indulgent dessert. For others, watching a glowing sun drift below the horizon to a soundtrack of shorebirds and lapping water is treat enough. At the Old Oyster Factory on Hilton Head Island, locals and visitors have been indulging in picturesque waterfront dining and a menu of fresh-caught seafood, juicy steaks, and delicious desserts — including the decadent Chocolate Fantasia — for more than 25 years.

Shrimp In the Lowcountry, we take our shrimp seriously. Here’s your guide for how to buy local. When are shrimp in season here? South Carolina’s provisional fishing areas — meaning the outer waters about 2 miles off shore — opened April 20, with the rest of the state’s waters opening a few weeks later. The commercial shrimping season typically ends around mid-December, but the 2016 season extended well into January.
What do restaurants do for shrimp when it’s not in season? When shrimp are in season, local restaurants and markets gather as much as they can. At Hudson’s Seafood on the Docks, some shrimp make their way right to the kitchen, while others are stored in a deep freeze for the off season.

How can you tell if the shrimp is fresh and local? Texture is a good indicator that you are eating fresh local shrimp according to Hudson’s Seafood on the Docks manager Carly Civici, who says that locally caught wild shrimp are more tender than farm raised shrimp. There are no ways to visually confirm that you are getting fresh, local shrimp, but according to Amy Dukes, fisheries statistics section leader for the South Carolina DNR, if someone markets local shrimp, they are required by DNR to prove it. This is done through receipts that track the shrimp’s progress all the way from the boat to your plate.
If you want to catch your own shrimp: You’ll need a recreational fishing license, for starters. Recreational shrimpers can take up to 48 quarts of whole shrimp or 29 quarts of headed shrimp during open season and can even take up to 12 dozen shrimp during closed season, which ends April 30.
