Christmas tree farms help keep traditions alive One of the best ways for the family to get into the holiday spirit is to pile into the car and drive to a Christmas tree farm where they can pick out their favorite tree, cut it down themselves, and take it home to decorate with love. There are two Christmas tree farms in Beaufort County — A&A Christmas Trees in Okatie, and The Family Tree Christmas Tree Farm on Lady’s Island. For families wishing to turn the hunt for a perfect tree into a longer road trip, there are two other Christmas tree farms a little further away: Smiling Bear Christmas Tree Farm in Walterboro and the Toogoodoo Tree Farm on Younges Island, just south of Charleston All four farms boast of being family friendly and want to make the outing fun. The farms have saws for customers to use, shakers to get loose needles to drop and bailers to wrap the trees so they can be placed atop a car. — STAFF REPORTS

Spread joy with these tips for festive holiday desserts STATEPOINT

A chill is in the air and string lights and holiday cheer sparkle around every corner. Thoughts of bonbons, gingerbread houses, decadent cakes and fresh-baked cookies weave in and out of dreams. Extravagant desserts can be a reality without being a hassle. Follow these tips to create sweet holiday happiness. RETHINK THE DESSERT SPREAD Instead of offering different types of desserts, consider impressing guests with a fondue bar. As an alternate to time-consuming double boiler recipes, use a high-performance blender, such as a Vitamix Professional Series 750, to create a delicious sauce in about 15 minutes.

To add a seasonal twist, make a chocolate orange fondue. Serve it in a pot with skewers of marshmallows, pound cake and fresh fruit. KEEP COOKIES ON HAND An easy way to spread dessert joy with visitors is to have cookies at the ready. Bake a batch of shortbread cookies and store in airtight containers. Add a slice of white bread to allow the cookies to absorb moisture without adding an odd taste. You can also freeze cookies so they stay fresh for a few months. Pull the treats out a couple of hours prior to guests arriving and they’ll taste freshly baked. SPRINKLE HOMEMADE SUGAR One ingredient that might not be a pantry staple but appears in a lot

of holiday baking and decorating is powdered sugar. To make your own, blend granulated sugar and a bit of cornstarch. Then, sprinkle it on top of that gorgeous chocolate cake or mix into frosting for decorating gingerbread houses. FESTIVE DRINKS Not all desserts come in cake and cookie form. Create a dessert cocktail, such as the Brandy Alexander. Blend brandy, chocolate ice cream, chocolate milk and ice cubes until the drink meets your desired consistency. For the younger crowd, try peppermint hot chocolate. Use a blender to crush peppermint sticks, then add chocolate chips, cocoa powder and milk. Blend until steaming. Top off with a dollop of whipped cream.

An outdoor ice-skating rink opened Nov. 18 at Shelter Cove Towne Centre on Hilton Head Island. watch — assuming you’re OK, of course. Remember, it’s OK to laugh at the flailing, not the ailing. The rink will be in the park at Shelter Cove and will be open to all ages and experience levels

Pop, fizz, clink: 3 ways to celebrate with champagne STATEPOINT

Champagne is the quintessential complement to any memorable occasion, one that can transform an experience, while creating new traditions and memories along the way. Here are a few ways to add glamour and elegance to your athome, year-end festivities. CHAMPAGNE-INSPIRED DECOR For those in the midst of planning a holiday party, consider a bubbly bar as the centerpiece. “Create a dedicated space for your bubbles and allow guests to taste at their own leisure. It makes for a great spot to strike up conversation and leaves the host free to mingle with the other guests,” said Vitalie Taittinger, artistic director of Champagne Taittinger — one of the last few remaining family-owned

PARISIAN RAW BAR Take a moment from the hustle and bustle of the holidays and transport you and your guests to Paris with a French-style raw bar. Move on to the perfect shrimp cocktail: the sweet flavor with just a squeeze of lemon is a natural fit with champagne. Then, end with a bit of lobster or crab, Vitalie said. For a new presentation, stagger footed cake stands at different heights to create areas where you can add additional design elements, such as winter greenery, flowers, candles and lights. Drape linen or other textured fabric for added texture and a touch of Paris.

Macarons are a natural fit for champagne. and operated champagne houses. In terms of the look for your bubbly bar, you don’t have to stick with traditional holiday colors. Use metallics like brushed gold, galvanized silver and rose gold, alongside lush holiday greens, for a more contemporary take on holiday spirit.

CHAMPAGNE MACARONS Chocolate delicacies and champagne are a natural pairing, particularly when there is a secondary element of fruit in the chocolate, such as passion fruit, raspberry, coconut or hazelnut. The outer shell, airy pillow, creamy center and soft chew of Macarons are a natural fit for champagne and will provide a memorable conclusion to your meal.
