Meet the winners of the 2018 Readers’ Choice Awards

or the 14th year, we counted on the community to identify the best of Beaufort, and the results were swift and decisive. This year just over 81,000 votes were cast in The Island Packet’s Readers’ Choice Awards — a survey of the best people and businesses in southern Beaufort County. We encouraged people to pre-nominate individuals and companies that they felt best deserved the recognition, and we then created a database of nominees. More than 11,000 people voted in the contest. Voting took place online, with participants selecting their favorites from the list of nominees. Many businesses used Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites to encourage their fans to participate in the Readers Choice contest and support them in the ballot box. There was no end to the creative ways people worked to drum up support and build awareness — kudos to the creativity displayed. Inside this special section, you’ll find a list of all the categories and winners for southern Beaufort County. Northern Beaufort County had its own Readers Choice contest, and those results are published today in The Beaufort Gazette. Voting ballots were available at www.islandpacket.com and www.beaufortgazette.com. The 150-plus categories included everything from best Realtor to best grocery store to best pizza. We’ve printed a list of The Island Packet’s winners on pages 24-26. All voting was conducted online, and people could vote once per day during the 10-day voting window in May. After we tabulated the results, we contacted the winners, and some of them decided to celebrate their success in this section. Many winning businesses are thanking their clients in this section by offering special promotions, so check out their messages. All of our winners will receive an official Readers’ Choice Award that they can display in their business for all their patrons to see. Watch for next year’s Readers’ Choice Awards, and be sure to cast your ballot for your local favorites.

Making a paw-sitive impact For Hilton Head Humane Association, success wouldn’t be possible without a healthy dose of community support and compassionate volunteers. “We cannot do this work without the help of the community,” said executive director Franny Gerthoffer. Q: “More than just a shelter” is an oftspoken mantra. What are some initiates that go beyond the normal call of duty? We work with families to find other solutions to surrendering pets, such as assisting with a one-time medical problem, a spay/neuter, or vaccines for a litter of kittens. Our Spay/Neuter Clinic participates in events throughout the year to provide free rabies vaccines and microchipping. We also provide free spay and neuters, testing and vaccines to stray cats in Beaufort and Jasper counties. Q:

Q: Is there a common misconception about shelter pets? The main misconception is that the animals aren’t loved. Sure, they are not in their future homes, but while they are with us, they are well loved and cared for like our own family pets. Q:

Q: If adoption isn’t an option, what are other ways people can help? A person can become a member, volunteer, donate, fundraise, or simply share our Facebook posts. If someone wants to help but isn’t sure how, they should reach out to us. Even if someone doesn’t have a lot of time, he or she can still make a positive impact on the lives Q:

of dogs and cats in the Lowcountry. Q: What is one piece of advice you would offer to a new pet parent? Get your new pet into a vet as soon as possible to establish a relationship with the vet. You need a prescription for heartworm prevention, and since we live in heartworm country (heartworm is spread through mosquitoes), it’s important to establish that relationship with a vet to keep your pet healthy. It’s also important to remember that it takes time to establish a relationship with your new pet, so if there are bumps in the road, don’t give up. Q:

Q: How has your partnership with Beaufort County Animal Services benefited the Lowcountry’s four-legged friends? We’ve been partners with Beaufort County Animal services for eight years and we’re opening a new campus together in Okatie in January 2019. Because of our partnership, county euthanasia rates have dropped from 62 percent in 2017 to 12 percent in 2017. Q:

Q: You built your own oyster farm, you have a soft shell crab shedding operation. What’s next? I get bored if I’m not doing something creative so we always have something on the back burner. One idea we’re flirting with is opening a poke bowl food truck to allow us to really make use of all the beautiful fresh fish we get. Plus, a food truck would be fun! We’re also considering putting in an oyster hatchery, which would allow us to grow seed oysters rather than buy them. But that one is more of a five-year plan. Q:

BEST OF THE BEST: CHARLIE’S L’ETOILE VERTE

Family togetherness is secret ingredient For more than 35 years, Charlie’s L’etoile Verte has taken pride in creating a daily menu to ensure they serve only the best to guests. “We’re inspired by French cuisine, focused on local seafood selections, served with Southern hospitality and a warm smile,” said Margaret Pearman. Get to know the eatery voted Best French Restaurant.

Q: While the restaurant has a French name, the menu reflects a broad scope of cuisine. What types of dishes can folks find on the menu? Almost anything goes at Charlie’s. Every afternoon our chef Josh Castillo collaborates with the kitchen team. They like to play around with Latin, Asian, and most of all Southern flavors. We maintain a core of favorites on our menu. The Pate, Escargot, and Creamy Crab Soup are everyone’s favorite way to start the meal. Our versions of Flounder Meuniere, Chicken Crepes, and Cobb Salad have dominated the lunches at Charlie’s for all 35 years. At night, customers survey 10 to 14 fresh fish options paired with the kitchen’s sauces and preparations. Dessert favorites are the Southern Q:

Caramel Cake and Pave au Chocolat, a dense flourless chocolate terrine. Q: Charlie’s has been around for more than 35 years. That’s no easy feat. What do you credit for such staying power? It has not been easy keeping a restaurant alive this long. It definitely would not still be kicking without the element of our family. My brother, Palmer, and I have been working in the restaurant our whole lives. He excels in the kitchen, and I focus on the front of house and wine list. The game is taking off across the country and it’s very popular here at Long Cove Club. It’s a fun, social racquet sport that’s less running than tennis. As vice president of marketing, Gannon makes it her goal to get as many new faces and theater naysayers as possible through the doors at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina on Hilton Head Island, so they can see for themselves what they’re missing. “You really can’t convince people until you get them here,” Gannon said. “What we offer at the Arts Center is far more extraordinary than most people realize.” Located in the heart of Hilton Head Island, the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina is renowned for producing Broadway-caliber theater throughout the year as well as presenting world-class musical artists, top-notch comedies and more. And

while the regional professional theater is here to serve the Lowcountry and beyond, don’t confuse it with being your typical small town community theater. “We have been called the ‘Broadway of the South.’ Yet, for what we’re able to accomplish and the quality of the performances, we’re a surprisingly small staff,” Gannon said. “If you were to go to a big city, you would be paying double, triple, even quadruple the ticket prices to see the same quality, sometimes better.” Each year the Arts Center produces five plays and musicals as part of their theater series in addition to their “Great Performances” series, which features nine shows throughout the season with something for every interest — from comedians and acrobats to musicians, singers and dance companies.

“There’s never down-time here, there’s always something going on. As one show is coming down, we’re getting the set and cast ready for the next show,” Gannon said. And then there’s community festivals, a Wine Gala, and a golf tournament, not to mention yearround educational programs that include summer camps, visual and performing arts workshops, lectures and field trips. “It takes teamwork to do what we do and to be successful,” Gannon said. “We’re always finding ways to make our events more fun and to entice a wider audience. Annual event goes to the dogs Hilton Head Humane Association’s annual Coligny Beach Dog Walk is a day that’s all about dogs and the people who love them. “This event is the reason why so many of us at the humane association started volunteering with the organization,” said Franny Gerthoffer, executive director of the humane association. Get to know the event voted Best Annual Community Event. Q: What are the details for this year’s event? The 21st annual Coligny Beach Dog Walk is from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. April 21. Bring your canine companion with you to walk in the event and enjoy live entertainment, food, dancing, vendor booths, goody bags and fun contests. Q:

Q: What has been the community response? Businesses have been extremely supportive. We’ve raised thousands of dollars from the event and T-shirt sales. Visitors even plan their vacation around the event. If you have a bucket list, this event should be on it. It’s worth the early wake up call. Q:

Q: Do you get many repeat walkers? Over the years we have seen dogs grow up with the event, children participating have now become regular Dog Walk volunteers, and some people and their pets have never missed this event! Shelter dogs are always happy to be there and many have found homes because of the exposure. Q:

Q: I’m sure you’ve had your share of ups and downs over the years. Can you share a few memorable moments? We’ve had the occasional rain out, and a wedding on the beach that didn’t expect to see 100 dogs! Beach lifeguards are equally surprised to see our pack. We’ve had shelter dogs run, pizza disappear, wet dogs jump on setups, and wind blow everything down. Master of the barbecue pit As the saying goes, “the secret’s in the sauce.” But at One Hot Mama’s on Hilton Head, the secret’s also in the prep work and their unwavering commitment to consistency. “We really don’t put the sauce on. We let the meat speak for itself,” said chef Orchid Paulmeier, who opened Mama’s in 2003. “We smoke our pork brisket for 14 to 16 hours every single day.
