Letter from
the Founders Dear Island School Family, In our 18th year The Island School is just now older than the semester students. It is an important time in our history as we celebrate the many parents who have helped us grow up over the past two decades. On November 27th we gathered in NYC to show appreciation for Anne and Tom Maxey who have helped plan and welcome every parents weekend. Now we need to look out over the horizon and plan a resilient future that has The Island School sailing strong for generations to come. We are back from a quasi sabbatical looking forward to an even stronger presence on campus in the trenches with our students and visiting programs. Dr. Edd Brooks will maintain his CEO title and continue leading our new management team that cares for the larger village. Caring for people is a major focus as we transition from Founders start-up phase to the next generation of leaders. The DeVos Family has generously donated another 6 plus acres to include the peninsula and land adjacent to waterloo cut allowing us to imagine how the Deep Creek Middle School might move out to join the Cape community. There is a new opportunity to build a strategic plan that looks holistically at our mission and our model and invests wisely to ensure that we best utilize the generous support that continues to create great opportunities. Like our amazing alumni, we are beginning to look at how we might have an impact beyond the Cape. The Prime Minister and his leadership team have recently visited our campus enlisting our engineers at Center for Sustainable Development to help transfer some of our systems learning to Ragged Island as the Government begins a plan to rebuild this remote island after the devastation of hurricane Irma. The Island School curriculum that has always celebrated an authentic journey that highlights essential skills and habits of mind is now helping guide a new assessment model for high school. Learn more about our founding role in the Mastery Transcript Consortium. The Aspen Institute has launched a new initiative that helps create an army of young ocean warriors who can help save the high seas; we have been asked to be at the table. These are exciting times as we look out towards our 20 year celebration. I hope that many will join us at the NE Aquarium in Boston on January, 5th 2019. We are proud of the impact our graduates and past colleagues are having out in the world. We are proud of how our village seems to be leading the way as we model a new way of teaching and learning and living well. Respectfully, Chris and Pam

A: Turtle research Q: How did you first get involved with The Island School? A: Chris knocked on the door of my Deep Creek office in 1992 asking what our company intended to do with the 5,000 acre Cape Eleuthera lands. This lead to much collaboration and the first donation of Island School land. Q: What was your first impression? A: When the school was in the vision phase, I considered it an admirable and risky venture. Ultimately, the decision to make the land grant was an investment in the leadership of Chris and Pam Maxey and their team of pioneering educators. Q: Tell me about some of the people you've met while working with the school? A: Bill Bardel, Lawrenceville School CFO, he believed when others were doubters; John Twiss, a legendary marine scientist, provided credibility and wise counsel to the fledgling school; and John Norris Carey (a/k/a “Giant”), builder of the school, financier and friend and mentor to all. Q: Why do you support The Island School? A: The school delivers on its mission, leadership effecting change and living well in a place. We have only just begun.The future is truly limitless.

Q: Favorite Island School meal A: No favorites. I love to eat everything our awesome staff in the kitchen creates! They are a special part of the Island School family and masters at their craft. Q: If you could be part of any research project, what would you choose? A: I love to dive, so anything that has to do with going underwater. I guess it would be sharks. Who isn’t impressed if you say you study sharks? Q: How did you first get involved with The Island School? A: My eldest daughter, Kate, discovered the program in 2002 through her high school advisor, Ben Snyder, (another IS director) and was fortunate to be part of the F’03 class. I was blown away by my first parents’ weekend, and I offered to help in any way I could. My wife, Kim and I were thrilled that my other three kids (Doug S’06, Molly S’10, Sam Spring’14) all wanted to participate as well. Q: What was your first impression? A: That the IS is the great missing link in our education system! Our faculty and staff offer our students an opportunity that is very hard to get in traditional high schools. And it is an experience that changes lives. It is amazing that in just 100 days the IS builds incredible selfconfidence and important lifelong relationships. I’ve never seen another program that creates so much so quickly. Q: Tell me about some of the people you've met while working with the school? A: The people on our team are everything. I love Eleuthera, but it is the committed people that make the difference in our students’ lives. And, I am so grateful for the friendships my family has made with faculty, staff, parents, and alumni at the Island School. They have changed our lives. Q: Why do you support The Island School? A: The Island School has given my family far more that we can ever give back. I want the Island School to thrive, and I want to see my children's children experience the IS in their time. That would be so cool!
The Prime Minister's Call for Hurricane Relief Help On September 23, 2017, friends and family of The Island School had the distinct pleasure of welcoming Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis to our campus. Joining him was Minister Desmond Bannister (Works), Minister Frankie Campbell (Transport & Local Government), and Minister Jeff Lloyd (Education). The Prime Minister and his staff were the guests of our loyal board members, Stephen and Alessandra Holowesko, son Teo, and Stephen's mother Lynn Holowesko. Days after Hurricane Irma devastated Ragged Island, rendering it "unlivable" for the Island's 80 residents, Prime Minister Minnis announced the government's intention to rebuild Ragged Island as a model "green" island; the first of its kind in the region. The Prime Minister has looked to The Island School's Center for Sustainable Development as a template for what

How can our community model of "Living Well in a Place" be scaled to the size of an island? On October 11th, the team accompanied the Ragged Island rebuilding task force, appointed by Prime Minister Minnis, on a National Emergency Agency (NEMA) sponsored visit to perform an initial site assessment of the conditions on Ragged Island. The devastation is crippling to life on Ragged Island, where most homes were completely destroyed, or proclaimed unlivable. Power has not been restored and water was being made
at a painfully slow rate by a temporary reverse osmosis water system. The team is developing a strategy with Givepower, a Tesla/SolarCity non-profit organization, to provide design and procurement services for ground mount solar, battery storage and a water desalinization system as a first step to the sustainable, resilient retrofit. Future elements to be included are aquaponics and efficient cold storage for the fishing community. The Prime Minister’s visit to our campus was a tremendous opportunity to showcase the good work we do here on the Cape to the Nation's leaders. It has long been a key tenet of our mission to model resiliency, self-sufficiency, sustainability and conservation, with the intent that the ideas employed on campus will be adopted elsewhere for the betterment of our host country. Our visitors were particularly impressed by the breadth of projects we have underway, as well as by our commitment to involving students in each of them. We look forward to continuing our work with the Ragged Island rebuilding task force, and hope to share what we do here on Cape Eleuthera with an even wider Bahamian community moving forward. AT THE CENTER FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
solar The Bahamas rely on fossil fuels to meet approximately 99% of its energy needs. As the demand for energy in The Bahamas increases, it is a necessity that more efficient use of energy and alternative energy sources be explored. As we struggle to overcome our Students at the Tarpum Bay Dump during dependence on fossil fuels for our Sustainabiliity Tour of Eleuthera electricity generation, we intend to demonstrate how the integration of simple renewable energy systems, on a community scale, can significantly alleviate reliance on fossil fuel based power and provide resiliency in the face of uncertain energy markets. Fall 2017 Island School students and Deep Creek Middle School students will focus specifically on the energy sector and electricity consumption in the classroom buildings and offices at the Deep Creek Middle School campus. The Island School students will be involved in a number of aspects of this project. The project will begin with the creation of a “sustainability assessment” designed by students which will be applied to the school’s buildings as well as other case studies across the island. The students will be involved with the installation of solar PV (AC/DC coupled air conditioning) and solar thermal heaters.

pyrolysis Currently, The Island School generates over 5,000 pounds of waste plastic each year. Recycling infrastructure does not exist in The Bahamas, and the only option to recycle plastic is to ship to the United States. Shipping waste plastic for recycling undermines its environmental and economic value, because of the added cost and carbon footprint incurred as part of the transportation process. The goal of the pyrolysis project is to utilize the high energy content in plastics instead of discarding them in landfills. Developing a local solution to reduce waste and improve the life cycle of plastic is paramount to The Island School’s mission of becoming a zero waste campus. Pyrolysis is the thermal decomposition of materials in a high temperature, low oxygen environment that yields condensable hydrocarbon gases that can be used in internal combustion engines. Our research class will start by using the reaction vessel made by Fall 2016 students to turn small batches of plastic into fuel. Then, students will work with advisors on the improvement of our larger pyrolyzer, designed to handle the weekly waste plastic stream at The Island School.
permaculture Local, nutritious, and stable food production and sourcing are of great importance for small island nations, such as The Bahamas, suffering from food insecurity. With increasing global market volatility and a changing climate, food systems dependant on fossil fuels are unsustainable. Current food production on campus will not adequately meet the institution’s increasing appetite and

STRIDES AT THE CENTER FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT burgeoning population of students, staff, educational programs, and visitors. This semester, the Permaculture Research team will be collecting additional data in the form of soil samples and a robust analysis of the CEI campus and aquaponics system to determine best land practices and to devise a roadmap for agricultural intensification. Ideally, this research will yield simple solutions in the form of improved campus design and layout, permaculture planning, and an upgraded aquaponics system expansion.
biochar/biofert Biofertilizer has been suggested as an effective sustainable alternative to synthetic fertilizers as it contains living microbes, growth regulators and microand macronutrients essential for promoting healthy plant growth and sustaining healthy soils, while being non-toxic to the surrounding environment. Biochar, a carbon rich product of organic pyrolysis, has been proposed as a method to mitigate climate change, with its greatest potential being for sustainable agriculture as it simultaneously sequesters atmospheric carbon dioxide while replenishing the soil with nutrients and increasing crop yields. Through combining biofertilizer and biochar with nutrient poor soils, such as the sandy soil found on the Islands of The Bahamas, our research will provide critical results that can be used for educational purposes intended for local farmers as well as contributing to global research on sustainable alternatives to traditional farming practices. Students are examining the effects of combining seaweed liquid extract biofertilizer (SLE) and coconut husk biochar on the germination and growth of Cowpea (Pennisetum glaucum) in nutrient poor sandy soils.

aquaponics The world’s growing need for fish protein is putting a significant amount of pressure on the aquaculture industry, from feed supplies to capture fisheries. The issues associated with the production of fish meal and its growing cost to the aquaculture sector, questions the sustainability of producing fish with fish meal. The Island School is striving to produce aqua feed on site and incorporate locally sourced ingredients as much as possible. Over the last decade research has highlighted an array of fish meal alternatives for tilapia feed; one of these alternatives being black soldier fly larvae (BSFL). The nutritious and unique culture of the BSFL has the potential to serve as viable low cost fish meal replacement in Nile tilapia diets. Students are examining the feasibility of using BSFL as an alternative protein source for Nile tilapia by substituting larvae meal for fishmeal in an assortment of experimental diets. These findings will increase awareness of the importance of utilizing sustainably sourced and produced feeds for aquaponic and aquaculture operations.
NEW FACES ON CAMPUS DEDICATED TO OBTAINING FOOD SECURITY With a degree in Culinary Arts and over 15 years of experience in the field, Jacquel Kemp, The Island School’s new Kitchen Manager, is bringing a buffet of new ideas to our dining hall. Jacquel’s personal interest in fitness nutrition has inspired a shift in our diet to include more wholesome, raw ingredients. Cooking for a crowd can make it difficult to stick to a protein- and vegetable-rich menu, but Jacquel has made some subtle changes that are affecting the way we eat and the way our Bahamian staff thinks about food.
Joe has spent his first year on Eleuthera developing plans to support our community’s food needs based on last year’s food audit. His team is working to clear out the nonfunctional parts of the orchard and of other areas on campus so that that land can be used to plant fruit trees. The chickens and ducks are moving into free range areas of the orchard. The Permaculture Team is working to enrich the soil we have available across campus in order to create more productive plots in which we can grow our own vegetables to further supplement the kitchen’s shipment orders.
One of these changes is the major reduction of sugar that is used to cook with and to garnish dishes. She has also made a lot of strides toward creating a more interesting menu for our vegetarians, even implementing a “Meatless Monday” so that all of our community members might enjoy her creative new dishes.
Many of Joe’s projects are long-term, however, his immediate goals include improving the viability of our aquaponics system - he is working with his team to increase the number of meals per week that include Tilapia (the fish that are used in the system) and to introduce new types of plants into the grow-beds. Finally, The Island School is discussing different ways that we might be able to support more local farmers in exchange for deals on their produce.
Meatless Monday stemmed both from the need to cater to different diets, as well as from one challenge that island-dwellers often face: the cost of meat. Jacquel does her best to source our meat products from Bahamian farms, if not from our own farm. The number of pigs, chickens and ducks we keep on campus has grown considerably in the past year, and she is working closely with Joe Plant, our Permaculture and Food Security Manager, to tactfully increase our chicken capacity until we can support our campus’ egg demands.

The Island School Curriculum Ashley Waldorf
We are proud to share that we’ve begun to implement a theme-based curriculum of interdisciplinary, placebased studies for students at The Island School. We have turned the focus of our last academic unit to authentic student-led Final Projects, with a pedagogical focus on the process of leadership, collaboration, and project planning; and we’ve taken our first steps toward incorporating a supplementary report of students’ competencies, which aligns with our membership in the Mastery Transcript Consortium.
Theme-based Curriculum
What: Our students continue studies that fall under subjects of the same disciplines as before, though now all classes are built around a theme, with each class building understanding of that theme from multidisciplinary lenses. The themes thread through Academic Weeks are are: Systems in Nature, Sustainable Interdependence, and Communities and Culture. The Seminar course charges students with creating a holistic understanding from the fragments learned in each class and applying them to both oneself and the world at large.
Final Projects
What: The Final Projects ask students to demonstrate leadership, collaboration, and project planning by taking ownership for the relationships, process and product necessary of an authentic task. All students are in one project group, with six to seven groups in total. Projects this semester included Project 110 and Dive and Doc. Project 110 challenged student to coordinate multiple 110-minute service projects, including planning for one upon return home, while also supporting Island School faculty member Leigh Schmitt as he ran the length of Eleuthera (he completed it in 16 hours 48 minutes!). Dive and Doc led students through planning their own Advanced Dive certification course, as well as creating a short documentary that answers the question: Why do we SCUBA Dive at The Island School?
Competency Celebration
What: Our first steps toward adopting a supplementary Mastery Transcript occurred this semester with our Holistic Achievement Profile. The HAP, which is included in the Final Report for students, celebrates student competencies based on evidence collected during non-academic programming throughout the semester. For example, a student could be celebrated for their community-mindedness by looking at a student’s orientation toward peers during expeditions (did they voluntarily serve others first, and take the least desired kayak?) or dorm life (did they hold themselves and peers accountable for bathroom cleanliness?).

SP'15, Interns with Dr. Edith Widder Growing up on the coast, Ellie, SP ’15, knew she loved the ocean long before going to The Island School. Her IS experience only cemented her future in ocean conservation and field research. This fall Ellie started her college career at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. For her sixweek January break she interned at Ocean Research & Conservation Association. ORCA is a nonprofit dedicated to developing technologies to conserve and restore ocean ecosystems impacted by anthropological activities.
2017 Alumni Reunion!
With the determination to get back into the field, Ellie began her search by looking at all oceanbased nonprofits in Florida. When she saw Dr. Edie Widder was the founder and CEO of ORCA, she realized the Island School connection. Although Ellie was on the Stingray Team at IS, she had heard about Dr. Widder’s work from the Deep Sea Team’s deployment of the Medusa; the camera that captured the first images of the giant squid and Dr. Widder’s most famous discovery. Ellie interned with the ORCA team on the Fast Assessment of Sediment Toxicity Program (FAST Program). The Fort Pierce area, where ORCA is based, has experienced extreme algae blooms in the last few years. Through the sampling and analysis of the Indian River Lagoon, ORCA has made “pollution visible.” Using a state of the art water sampling system called Kilroy, and the results from FAST, ORCA has created a user-friendly map of nitrogen levels within the Indian River Lagoon. With this knowledge and tool the community and stakeholders can be empowered to resolve the problem.

With this experience, Ellie is well on her way to a career in marine conservation. Working with Dr. Widder and a team of passionate and driven scientists, Ellie, although young, was challenged to work independently and trusted as a member of the FAST team. When asked what impacted her the most from her internship with ORCA she said, “Dr. Widder has never lost her inspiration and passion for the ocean, and that inspires me.”

By building relationships and creating opportunities with our neighbors, our outreach mission is to support the long-term resilience of the community in this beautiful place where we live. Our tradition stretches back longer than The Island School, and the impact is reflected in the data below and the stories of growth and achievement. Local Schools Program

We provide an opportunity for Bahamian children to experience environmental stewardship and gain exposure to options for how to live well in a place by: 1. Developing environmental education resources that are locally relevant. These resources align with the primary and secondary benchmarks of the Bahamian National Curriculum. 2. Providing on-going professional development in environmental education methodology to increase level of instruction and knowledge for teachers. 3. Facilitating opportunities for students to develop, test and apply new ideas and new knowledge while gaining an understanding of the ecosystems of Eleuthera.
In March of this year, Chris and Pam Maxey volunteered at the Pardada Pardadi School (PPS), which is about 4 hours drive east from New Delhi. Under the leadership of two-time Island School parent Gigi Goldman, co-founder of the charity We Share Solar, a dedicated team of Island School alumni helped build a Solar Suitcases, a portable solar electric system, for Pam and Chris to take to India. They carried four separate units and worked with the students at PPS to install these resources

Chris and Pam demonstrated the installation of the first kit which inspired the girls to assist with various parts of the installation process and encouraged them to take initiative in setting up the remaining panels. This has helped each of them grow more confident, as they know how to adjust and mount the panels for optimum usage.
Local Schools Program
In 2017 The Local Schools Program: • Reached 1,215 local students from Eleuthera, that is 11% of the total population of Eleuthera. • Facilitated professional development for 43 public school teachers on Eleuthera • Provide transport, a nutritional meal and materials for all participants • Reached 131 students over summer break through day programming and hosted 29 students for 5 day, overnight summer camps
After Schools Program The After Schools Program offers a range of consistent extracurricular opportunities to children from the settlement of Deep Creek in South Eleuthera. The Open Learning Center program focuses on literacy and numeracy support and homework completion. Offered twice a week, it is a key program for the youngest members of the settlement.

Open Learning Center
The Deep Creek Primary School Community Garden is a local garden at the primary school tended by the with the help of its students. This program has cultivated a lot of interest and introduced farming skills to the young people of Deep Creek. Check out this video to learn more! After school sport offers an opportunity to come together in productive ways and be physically active. A concerted effort is being made to meet a variety of ages and to involve adults from the community and from the Cape Eleuthera Island School.

Swim Club grew out of the passion of staff members to promote basic swimming and snorkelling skills as a way to be safe and to explore the water that surrounds the island. In 2017 The After Schools Program: • Reached 46 students through the weekly after school enrichment program • 32 staff volunteered to support this program contributing a total of 330 volunteer hours • Provided children with transport and materials to participate in programming

Apprentice Program

Young Men’s Leadership Program There is a global epidemic of young men being overrepresented in jails, unemployment and substance abuse. Causes such as absent fathers, lack of community involvement, and an overburdened education system have become expected all over the world. Young men of South Eleuthera are facing similar circumstances, in the last five years only 37% of young men in South Eleuthera have graduated high school. The Young Men’s Leadership Program is an extracurricular mentorship program dedicated to the success of young men in South Eleuthera. Apprentice Program The Apprentice Program is a paid six week summer program that offers young Bahamians an opportunity to work closely with CEIS staff and divisions across the whole organization. Through training and potential employment, young people are empowered and become aware of opportunities for employment. Apprentices partake in a professional development workshop every week covering the following content: • Successful Work Behaviours • Verbal & Nonverbal Communication • Professionalism: Resumes & Applications • Coaching & Interview Practice • Financial Management Introduction • Conflict Resolution
City Bridge partnerships enable The Island School to strategically expand our accessibility to high-potential students from a diverse set of family backgrounds. In 2012, we worked with our first City Bridge partner, African Leadership Academy. Since then, we have worked with 33 City Bridge scholars. Hurricane Island Outward Bound Open Enrollment Courses (January and May): A 30-foot open sailboat serves as both home and classroom on this journey through the tropical wilderness of the Bahamas island chain. Students travel to the most secluded sections of the Bahamas island chain on shallow-draft vessels; learn to navigate them and discover a remote and beautiful marine ecosystem.
expeditions Through expeditions the Island School’s mission, leadership effecting change, has the opportunity to extend throughout the world. Exploration in remote and untouched landscapes presents students with the unique ability to be immersed in a new culture and environment, and make a difference. The Cape Eleuthera Institute and Island School are excited to expand horizons and support expeditions. We are thrilled with our continued partnership with Hurricane Island Outward Bound School. Our joint courses are held at our base camp and on Sharpie Schooner pulling boats. These specialized sailboats do not have a motor. They are propelled solely by the wind and oars if the need arises. This lack of fossil fuel use supports our mission for sustainability. Island School Expedition courses being offered in 2018:
Hurricane Island Outward Bound Maine to Bahamas Environmental Gap Semester (October-November): This 80-day semester expedition explores the wilderness ecosystems of Maine’s forests and the Bahamas’ subtropical seas. Students learn to travel by canoe and sailboat along Maine’s rocky coast and around the Bahamas tropical waters, backpack and rock climb in Maine and participate in long running science projects at the Bahamas’ Cape Eleuthera Institute.
Island School Expeditionary Summer Term is not only academically rigorous, but takes place in a physically intensive environment. Throughout the 18 days at sea, students develop sailing and navigation skills in a multitude of open water conditions. Training includes understanding points of sail, weather patterns and tidal effects. Another unique aspect of this course is the opportunity to spend time in the Exuma Cays Land and Sea park. This 176 square mile sanctuary is the world’s oldest marine protected area. During the program, students will be assigned to research project in partnership with the Cape Eleuthera Institute

20 Year Celebration
Please mark your calendar and plan to join us Saturday January 5th, 2019 at the New England Aquarium in Boston to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the start of The Island School! It will be a great time to reconnect with old friends, make new ones, and celebrate the entire Island School family. We will meet in the late afternoon in the IMAX theater to hear about the future of the ocean from explorer and researcher Edie Widder, and afterwards gather around the main aquarium tank to commune with the penguins and octopus, the fish and turtles, and together raise a glass to cheer on the next 20 years of The Island School!
Life on campus depends on getting out on the water. Since 2008, the waterfront has been the heart of activity for science, exercise, scuba diving, boating, and all kinds of exploration. It’s where we host student presentations, welcome parents and guests, do yoga, gather our community, do homework, and just sit and look at the horizon. You can see the rays jumping, barracuda hunting, and silverside fish schooling. If you are lucky the manatee will laze by looking for a freshwater drink. The limestone sculpture (unveiled in 2016) by Bahamian artist Antonius Roberts stands sentry on the jetty waiting for boats to return home.

Work is starting in 2018 on a waterfront upgrade to: • Expand the boathouse and dock to become the Sydney C. DeVos Center for Exploration • Establish an Ocean Exploration Fund to expand & upgrade the boat fleet with a vessel named Reefrat, in honor of super-volunteer and first-parent Anne Maxey's 20 years of service • Build a solar powered boat maintenance facility with boat ramp • Double our dive fleet with an all-electric concept dive boat called RED Runner
More and more people want to join in the fun. We've added housing for 40 research interns on campus last year with the Anderson-Cabot Hall at Cape Eleuthera Institute so that more graduate students can lead cutting edge projects. And 10 additional visiting university programs have been added *each year* since 2008. Increasing our capacity to get people out in boats to field sites and underwater to explore and research is a priority.
