WHEN THE RAINBOW BREAKS, HOLOCAUST LECTURE WITH DR. HENRY KNIGHT Thursday, March 14, 2019 6:30pm to 8:30pm Free event, open to the public. The rainbow has been a sign
of divine promise and covenantal obligation grounding the shared values of civilized life. In the story of Noah, a rainbow follows the flood as a sign that God will not destroy the world by floods and as a symbol of human obligation for all peoples to follow the seven Noahide commandments expected of all human beings: • Prohibition against idolatry; • Prohibition against taking God’s name in vain; • Prohibition against murder; • Prohibitions against adultery and sexual immorality; • Prohibition against theft; • Prohibition against eating flesh torn from a living animal; and • Obligation to establish courts of justice. What does it mean for the binding values of civilized life to be utterly shattered? What does it mean for a transcendent God in covenantal partnership with humanity and all creation to sanction the slaughter of 1.5 million children by divine absence? These questions are the kinds that are raised when the rainbow breaks. Just as surely, one must ask what could lead to a sign of hope breaking forth in the aftermath of such a storm of destruction as that wrought by the Shoah. When the Rainbow Breaks is an exploration of these issues and questions.

‘American Idol’ winners: Where are they now? Some have had more success than others – in certain cases, much more – but they all share one thing: the title “American Idol.” As the singing competition starts its second ABC season (and 17th season overall, encompassing its initial Fox run) Sunday, March 3, more hopefuls will pursue the sort of career launch others have gotten from the show ... even if they didn’t win (Jennifer Hudson, Katharine McPhee, etc.). Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie will return as judges, with Ryan Seacrest back in his traditional role as host. And what of past “American Idol” winners? Here’s a look at where they are now. Kelly Clarkson (2002): Now in her third season as a mentor on NBC’s “The Voice,” Grammy winner Clarkson also is readying a syndicated talk show for this fall. Ruben Studdard (2003): Teamed with “Idol” runner-up Clay Aiken, Studdard made his Broadway debut over the past holiday season with a seasonal show. Fantasia Barrino (2004): In recent years, Barrino has toured with a concert show, and she released a Christmas album in 2017. Carrie Underwood (2005): With her sixth studio album (“Cry Pretty”) released last fall, multiple Grammy winner Underwood starts her newest concert tour in May. Taylor Hicks (2006): Hicks has been hosting the farm-to-tableadvocating food show “State Plate” on INSP. Jordin Sparks (2007): After starring in last September’s Lifetime special “Jordin Sparks: A Baby Story,” the singer has the YouTube baking series “Heart of the Batter.”
VIRGO This week, you’ll start to plan a spontaneous trip or begin thinking about working abroad to gain new experien ces. Professional training could prove to be invaluable.
Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest and Katy Perry (from left)
David Cook (2008): Cook recently released the single “Death of Me” and participated in the Chicago Bulls’ Pride Night. Kris Allen (2009): Allen has toured with other “American Idol” alumni in a stage show, and his most recent single was last year’s “When All the Stars Have Died.” Lee DeWyze (2010): DeWyze, who has released seven studio albums, is now wed to model and actress Jonna Walsh (“Baby Daddy”). Scotty McCreery (2011): In-demand country star McCreery tours frequently and released his latest album (“Seasons Change”) last year. Phillip Phillips (2012): Still claiming the top-selling song yielded by “Idol” (“Home”), Phillips toured last year both on his own and with Gavin DeGraw. Candice Glover (2013): Having released the 2014 album “Music Speaks,” Glover has said she wants to be a counselor. Caleb Johnson (2014): Johnson toured with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra last year. Nick Fradiani (2015): As a solo artist, Fradiani has released an album (“Hurricane”) and a self-marketed EP (“Where We Left Off”). Trent Harmon (2016): Troubles with Harmon’s record label were resolved, and he released the album “You Got ‘Em All” last year. Maddie Poppe (2018): A contestant on “The Voice” earlier, Poppe has released several singles, the latest of which is “First Aid Kit.”
LIBRA Needing a change, you’ll let yourself be guided by an inner voice telling you to follow your passions. As a result, your horizons will broaden considerably. SCORPIO You’ll discover some information that will lead you down a new path in life. A new passion will bring you happiness that could last for years to come. SAGITTARIUS You’ll negotiate with different groups at work to resolve a conflict. You’ll become more active in your union or within your community. CAPRICORN You’ll find professional success in a new company or governmental organization. You’ll be pleasantly surprised when a new treatment finally brings an end to a lingering health problem. AQUARIUS You won’t appreciate being in the spotlight this week, but enthusiatic applause and being the centre of attention are to be expected after a great accomplishment. PISCES You’ll begin seriously looking for a new place to live. If you rent, you might consider buying your own home. Your children will bring you moments of great joy.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January 29 and addressed to Mueller

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Bryan Cranston’s Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN
“Why Him?” (2016): Some sly nods to Cranston’s series “Breaking Bad” are incorporated into the script for this comedy, casting him as a dad who is less than sold on his daughter’s (Zoey Deutch) entrepreneurial boyfriend (James Franco). “Wakefield” (2016): Cranston is superb as a troubled lawyer who makes himself disappear by going into hiding. “The Infiltrator” (2016): A customs agent (Cranston, again making the most of a showcase role) plays a risky game by participating in drug-money laundering under an alias. “All the Way” (TV, 2016): Cranston solidly reprises his Tony Award-winning stage performance as President Lyndon B. Johnson during the latter’s consideration of the Civil Rights Act. “Trumbo” (2015): The blacklisting of noted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo during the socalled communist “witch hunt” is depicted by Cranston in an Oscar-nominated portrayal. “Cold Comes the Night” (2013): Cranston makes a terrific villain, playing a sighttroubled criminal bent on recovering some cash at a rundown motel. “Argo” (2012): As part of an excellent ensemble cast led by director and fellow star Ben Affleck, Cranston plays a CIA higher-up involved in a plan to rescue U.S hostages from their Iranian captors. “Total Recall” (2012): Playing a duplicitous politician is right up Cranston’s alley in this remake of the futuristic sci-fi adventure. “Little Miss Sunshine” (2006): Cranston makes his presence known in a memorably blunt supporting role in the tale of a family on a road trip to get a young member (Abigail Breslin) into a pageant. “That Thing You Do!” (1996): It’s only a short bit, but Cranston is purposely and hilariously stiff as astronaut Virgil “Gus” Grissom, a definite fish out of water as he makes an appearance on a television variety show.

Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart see ‘The Upside’ It’s getting harder to remember the time when Bryan Cranston mainly was known as the frequently flummoxed father on “Malcolm in the Middle.” Though it doesn’t always happen for actors principally seen in one way, Cranston has gotten to display his versatility in many other projects – thanks mainly to the huge image overhaul he was permitted by the makers of “Breaking Bad” when he was cast as Walter White in that milestone cable series. While he’s currently displaying that range again as television newsman Howard Beale in the Broadway staging of “Network,” he also gets to do it in “The Upside,” an Americanization of the much-lauded French film “Les Intouchables.” The seriocomic picture makes Cranston and stand-upcomedy veteran Kevin Hart an unlikely acting team, but their differences are precisely the reasons the movie works. Cranston plays a rich businessman left quadriplegic by a hang-gliding accident, while Hart plays a parolee who needs gainful employment ... which brings him to the home of the Cranston character, where the chip on Hart’s shoulder almost prevents him from taking a job that will turn out to be life-changing for both men. As much as that may sound like a predictable progression for “The Upside” to take, it’s very much to the credit of both central performers that it never becomes cloying nor trite. They maintain a certain edge that keeps it fascinating to watch them play off each other, and while Nicole Kidman also is present as Cranston’s assistant, the picture clearly belongs to the men. Not surprisingly, Cranston has the bigger challenge, since he has to convey everything without making full use of his usually animated physical being. His alter Michael B. Jordan ego’s condition leaves him to convey everything
facially and vocally, and if he wanted to put himself to the test that way, he surely does here. Director Neil Burger (“Limitless”) appears to leave Cranston and Hart largely to their own inventions, which is a smart idea. He knows he has two talents confident in what they bring, and though they have to adhere to certain turns in the script, they pretty much do what they’re expected to do here. Which is not a bad thing. There can be an upside, indeed, to putting polar opposites together on the screen. As the current gatekeepers of that theory, Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart confirm that it’s still quite valid.

“THE FAVOURITE” One of the big players in the latest film-award season, this royal tale earned 10 Oscar nominations including best picture, actress (Olivia Colman) and supporting actress (both Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone). Colman plays Queen Anne, whose poor health and unpredictable temperament prompt the coverage of her national duties by Lady Sarah (Weisz), who also supervises a new servant (Stone). The latter two women then vie for the queen’s favor, a competition that could have far-reaching consequences for all of England. Nicholas Hoult, Joe Alwyn and Mark Gatiss also star ... but as all the award bids have confirmed, this really is the ladies’ picture DVD extras: “making-of” documentary; deleted scenes. ›››› (R: AS, N, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) 12 • The Sumter Scene • March 3 - March 9, 2019

After the big success of the first follow-up to the “Rocky” series, a sequel could have aimed as strictly another moneymaker, with little or no art involved. Luckily, those retained from the first film help to ensure that doesn’t happen, including Michael B. Jordan and – in his eighth turn as Rocky Balboa, Sylvester Stallone, who also co-wrote the picture. It expands an earlier plot point as Apollo Creed’s son, played by Jordan, prepares for a boxing match against the son of the man who killed his father in a professional fight. Dad, alias Ivan Drago, is played again by Dolph Lundgren ... and fans who know their “Rocky” history will enjoy booing and hissing him all over again. While there’s action to spare, there’s also room for development of one of “Creed’s” standout points ... the hero’s romance with a singer played by Tessa Thompson. Phylicia Rashad also is back, and “Rocky” loyalists also should enjoy seeing Brigitte Nielsen again. DVD extra: “making-of” documentary. ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “INSTANT FAMILY” In this effective “feel-good” movie, based on experiences of director and co-writer (and adoptive dad) Sean Anders, Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne play a house-flipping couple who fear they’ve waited too long to become parents. They try to catch up fast by adopting not one child but three ... siblings who are old enough to be set in their ways, giving their new mom and dad big challenges in trying to put their own stamp on raising the kids. The film does indeed feel like it comes from someone who knows what he’s talking about, encompassing scenes with Octavia Spencer and Tig Notaro as adoptionagency operators – and despite some predictable turns in the script, such as the reappearance of the kids’ biological mother, the picture remains generally enjoyable in its approach and its performances. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “BEN IS BACK”
ISN’T IT ROMANTIC
PG, 1 hr 47 min Action/Adventure, Animated, Comedy
Julia Roberts challenges herself in the independent-film world as the center of writer-director Peter Hedges’ involving drama, about the effect of a recovering addict’s return to his family at holiday time. The titular Ben is that returnee, played by Lucas Hedges (the filmmaker’s son), and he strikes authenticfeeling notes as he maintains he’s getting sober – but he also leaves enough doubt for others to be concerned about his renewed presence in the household. The main skeptics are his stepfather (Courtney B. Vance) and his sister (Kathryn Newton), but his mother (Roberts) withstands their worries to put her faith in him. That’s a risky emotional bet, though, since others including drug suppliers pose hurdles for Ben. DVD extras: audio commentary by Peter Hedges; photo gallery. ››› (R: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
THE PRODIGY (2019)
“HOUSE OF CARDS: SEASON SIX”
R, 1 hr 32 min Horror, Suspense/Thriller
The Netflix drama – which did a lot to put original streaming series offering full seasons at a time on the map – concludes as Claire Underwood (Robin Wright, also an executive producer and the director of the final episode) faces mounting challenges to her position as the first female U.S. president, having succeeded her husband Frank (absent here, as is his portrayer Kevin Spacey, for plot reasons that are explained) in the office. Especially troublesome are two siblings (Diane Lane, Greg Kinnear) who try to manipulate Claire, then scheme to engineer her downfall. Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Campbell Scott and Patricia Clarkson are among others who return to wrap up their roles. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

Natalie Portman offers one of her biggest image changes to date in writer-director Brady Corbet’s drama, about a music star whose fame is built on her haunting memories of an incident from her youth. She and her sister (Stacy Martin) base a hit song on their experience of surviving a school shooting, with the Portman character continuing her music career into adulthood ... but celebrity can have its price, as she learns in a tragic way. Jude Law plays her driven manager, with Jennifer Ehle also starring and Willem Dafoe narrating the story. Raffey Cassidy has dual roles as the younger incarnation of Portman’s Celeste, then as her daughter. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
