Air Solutions continues growth from garage office to Best of Sumter We at Air Solutions Heating and Cooling are a locally owned and operated HVAC business that was started in 2013 by Jimmy Davis and Richard Cook. With only a home garage as our initial office base, we hit the ground running. We worked hard to build our business and provide quality installation and heating services as best we could. Over the last eight years, our company has grown our business to 33 employees operating 21 vehicles, specializing in residential change-outs and new construction for more than 3,000 customers. We operate with a sense of urgency for every customer’s needs. Our 24-hour, on-call service technicians make sure that when people call, day or night, their questions are answered or their needs are met in the most timely manner possible. In an effort to be thorough from start to finish, we follow up with customers to make sure they had the best experience and service possible or ask how their experience could have been better. This helps us modify and improve the ways in which we serve our future clients. We at Air Solutions are

honored to employ veterans, as well as participate in the military appreciation picnic put on by Shaw Air Force Base to show our support of troops and their families both locally and abroad. We have been honored to have donated more than $10,000 in 2019 to such causes. Some of those community events include Sumter Feeds My Starving Children MobilePack, where we donate monetarily as well as volunteer a couple of hours to help pack hundreds of meals for some of God’s hungriest children around the world. In November, we participate in Operation Christmas Child by providing boxes filled with necessities and fun items to encourage and spread the Gospel to children worldwide. As far as local community outreach, we sponsor and provide HVAC services to the Sumter Pregnancy Center, which strives to support and educate women and men undergoing unplanned pregnancies. We also donate to the American Heart Association through various local events such as the always-fun Sumter Derby Day. We also participate in the Festival of Trees at Christmastime, which is put on by the Tuomey Foundation and benefits such services as hospice care provided by Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital. Archway Academy starts a lifetime of education on solid ground The Archway Academy team is honored to be named Sumter’s Best Child Care Center for 2021! Dr. Capers Lee finds service to God in dental profession Capers Lee, DMD, is a 1982 graduate of the University of South Carolina and attended dental school at the Medical University of South Carolina. He graduated in 1986 and recently completed his 35th year practicing dentistry. When Dr. Lee met a fellow dentist on a dove shoot in September 2003, little did he know that his life was about to radically change. Danny Gardner, a dentist in Charleston and an avid supporter of foreign and domestic mission work, mentioned taking a trip to Venezuela in the spring, and the rest is history. Dr. Lee contacted Dr. Bill Sasser of Charleston, a veteran servant with the Christian Medical and Dental Association, and away they went. For the past 20 years or so, Dr. Lee has been able to tap into Dr. Sasser’s trips abroad with the CMDA about two or three times a year, serving in Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador and his favorite, Honduras. “I really think that God is leading me to do this a lot more often, and I am waiting to see how He would work that out,” Lee said.” I could never have even dreamed of the blessings He has showered on our family since we started serving the world’s poor so intentionally.” He is in his 35th year of marriage to his sweet wife, Tilly. They have three sons, Hunter, Banks and Myles, as well as three wonderful daughters-in-law, Anna, Molly 8

and Bailey. They also have three young grandsons, Carson, Miller and Capers, and two granddaughters, Sutton and Addison. Hunter is a U.S. Air Force dentist stationed at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, and Banks is a U.S. Air Force dentist stationed at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. Myles is a College of Charleston graduate employed by Bynum Insurance in Sumter. “I can’t wait to see what God will do next,” Lee said. “I’m really looking forward to continuing to serve Him the rest of my days on Earth.”

Rep. Murrell Smith works through pandemic and state budget I am humbled to be acknowledged by my community in the Best of Sumter 2021 publication for the second year in a row. Thank you for the honor. As your voice in the S.C. House of Representatives, I have always worked to provide Sumter County with a level of public service for which it can be proud. The residents of our great community have given me the privilege of representing it on issues that will impact our future. My family and I cannot thank you enough for your faith in me. The past year has been extremely difficult for everyone. Aside from the expected challenges of improving education, modernizing infrastructure, attracting and keeping business and industry and protecting our environment and quality of life, we have had to suffer through a devastating global pandemic. As chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, I saw firsthand the problems with writing our state budget in uncertain economic times. We were presented with the unenviable task of creating an appropriations bill without really knowing how the pandemic would affect revenue. We had to make tough decisions that left many state needs unmet. I am pleased to say that by restricting spending to essential government services and bulking up our reserves, we were one of the few states that did not have to cut budgets during the pandemic. I believe the state has weathered the worst of the storm and that our economy is poised to bounce back quickly this year. I look forward to a rapid resumption of growth and opportunity for both Sumter County and the state. While the obstacles and hardships we have faced have been

tremendous, it is important that we not lose sight of the silver lining that has arisen from this situation. Our nation, state and community pulled together to overcome this frightening virus. We are now experiencing the beginning of a return to normalcy, and I am confident that we will continue to work together to solve our collective issues. While I serve Sumter at the state level, my first priority will always be to the people of our community. For that reason, I have emphasized the pivotal role that quality of life plays in our county. By investing in improvements to local parks, trails and sports facilities, we have enhanced our recreational opportunities and made Sumter a more desirable place to live and visit. I want to thank my fellow Sumter Delegation members, Rep. David Weeks and Sen. Thomas McElveen. We work closely together with other locally elected officials as part of Team Sumter. I also want to thank my colleagues at the Smith Robinson Law Firm for their dedication and support, which allows me to work and serve in elected office. Most importantly, I could not do everything I do without the love and understanding of my wonderful wife, Macaulay, and our children, Bee and Murrell III. Thank you again for this recognition. CCTC takes pride in student support, ability to adapt to continue education What an honor it is to be recognized as not only the Best College/University, but also the Best Place to Work and as having the Best Professor. While our students are what drives us to be our best each day, it’s the faculty and staff who work as a team to ensure each one receives the attention and encouragement he or she deserves. It’s even more amazing to win the Best Place to Work award in a year when our employees have been tested like never before. Everyone has remained committed to our shared mission of providing pathways to success, and together we have created a caring and supportive culture that serves students even in this remote and online environment. Moving to a virtual format in 2020 meant professors had to learn how to teach and reach students in incredible new ways. Sometimes that meant a student would have a baby in his or her lap or a cat on the desk, but they persevered and so did we. Staff had to learn to support students using methods that were only previously reserved for special occasions. Everyone from custodians who worked to keep classrooms clean to the new president who got his start in early 2021 has learned to adapt and change along with the students. It’s that

adaptability that makes CCTC unique. We were one of the first technical colleges in the state to fully come back to the campus to be there for the students and each other. We did everything in our power to host an in-person graduation in 2020 because we know how much that walk across the stage means to our students. We take pride in knowing that we continued to educate frontline workers like nurses, pharmacy technicians and medical assistants in times when they are needed most. And we look to the future to impact the workforce in highdemand trades and occupations. Our Best Professor designation proudly goes to Pam Dinkins, the dean of Business and Public Service. Her tireless attention to student needs earned her this distinguished title twice. Pam is one of those rare people whose sincerity oozes from her with just one meeting. She is genuinely interested in her students not only while they are at CCTC, but long after they leave. We are looking forward to brighter days ahead. When students can roam the halls, ask for help in person and enjoy time on campus with friends. This is what college is about, after all, and why we are more than proud to say we are simply the best!

Baker’s Sweets finds its sweet spot in the Sumter community

Baker’s Sweets opened in the year 2000 and has been growing ever since. At 30 years old, Jennifer Baker opened shop. Starting with just a few sticky buns, muffins and, of course, the famous Nutty Praline cake, business started to thrive. Fast forward to the Baker’s Sweets that everyone knows today with tasty treats that are spread across a 12-foot display, not to exclude the full menu with breakfast, lunch and dinner. We now offer online ordering via our website, or you can download our new Baker’s Sweets app. With the pandemic came new ideas, which led to our curbside pickup and delivery options for our everyday menu. Finding ways to celebrate the good

The way we celebrated our Best of Sumter 2020 winners was unlike any other year because of the coronavirus pandemic. While we had to move our red carpet event to Zoom and our living rooms, we wanted to make sure we gave everyone the chance to walk – or drive – on a red carpet in a year when highlighting the positives was so important. So, we set up our massive banner, in our newsroom while our reporters worked from home, for winners to pose on the red carpet. Then we held a drive-through red carpet event in the parking lot of The Sumter Item to let winners pick up their winner's plaque and other goodies and take a photo on the red carpet – either standing or in their vehicle. We hope we’ll never have to do that again, but it sure was one for the books!

COVID-19 one year later: The Item is all in for Sumter The last year has been simultaneously a blur and a lucid dream, somehow at the same time going in the blink of an eye and at a glacial pace, but I will always remember the day it really hit me we were in for something unlike anyone alive has ever experienced. It'll be a question we can all answer years and decades from now. Where were you when you realized this novel coronavirus would change our lives in the present and for the future? I've covered crisis. Shootings, fires, weather. Those are terrible, but they come and go, and I've never been personally impacted by them in real-time, allowing me to look into the room as a spectator only.

"The Sumter Item will be there to tell your stories. Because it's our story, too." This has been different. Don't get me wrong. I've been privileged. I have been able to work mostly from home, and our operations haven't dramatically changed. My husband and I haven't gotten sick, and other than my dear professional friend Ken Bell who passed away in January, my family and friends who have become sick from COVID-19 have recovered without hospitalization. Health officials announced South Carolina's first two cases of COVID-19 on March 6, 2020. We reported the first cases in Sumter and Lee counties in The Sumter Item on March 19, 2020. Since those first cases came to light, hundreds of thousands of South Carolinians have tested positive for the virus, and thousands have died. Since then, events have been canceled, schools have struggled to connect with students, businesses have shuttered. People have lost jobs or stood on the front lines daily. We stopped hugging and started Zooming. This virus has exacerbated disparities that were already present in our society, showing us the glaring economic and racial gap between that has placed a disproportionate burden on rural communities, people of color and those who cannot work from home. Through it all, our team at The Sumter Item has both been experiencing the pandemic while at the same time telling your stories. In this last year from roughly March 2020 to March 2021, our small news team wrote nearly 850 articles and produced about 120 Sumter Today episodes about COVID-19, from providing information on testing and vaccine clinics to reporting mandates, updates and ordinances. We told stories of businessowners and classrooms trying to adapt. We talked about how the virus is impacting every aspect of our lives, from

domestic violence to the burden on nurses to volunteers holding drive-by birthday parades. We memorialized neighbors and friends. One year later, our mission has only become more resolute as vaccines show a light at the end of the tunnel. We think local news is critical to a community. Without it, you wouldn't know what's happening in your children's schools, in the offices of local officials you elected, in your neighborhood and around town. One of the reasons I love working in local news is the opportunity to meet people I never would. In the past year, our team met nurses who are putting their lives on the line to care for others, teachers finagling students in the classroom and on a computer and people trying to help those in need. It has been an honor to tell their stories. One of those storylines has been the redevelopment of downtown Sumter. On such an upward trend, a major milestone was the opening of the county's first brewery and taproom. That's the day I will always remember. Prepared to walk over from our office to cover Sumter Original Brewery's opening day on March 17, 2020, our newsroom instead was dulled as we watched Gov. Henry McMaster stream a press conference to announce all restaurants and bars must close dine-in services, effective the next day. I think there's no way we go back to life completely as it was before. One day, hopefully sooner than later, we can all gather, maybe even hug. Businesses can flourish, and we can talk about progress. Until then and after, The Sumter Item will be there to tell your stories. Because it's our story, too.

We spent the last year covering a global pandemic, an election and national calls for racial justice, and we told stories in each of those realms that wouldn't have been told anywhere else, whether that was reporting first-hand knowledge of what's happening in front of the city's police department, delving into who are the candidates seeking your vote for local office or telling you where you can get tested for COVID-19 or memorializing our family and friends the community has lost. The Sumter Item was recognized on a state level for its coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic among 25 awards the newsroom earned from the S.C. Press 100

Association's annual news contest for work done in 2020. Awards earned this year, which were publicly released in March, spanned the newsroom from sports to news writing, from print design and photography to video, from individual to staff recognitions. "Two of the recognitions we received involved the entire newsroom: our COVID-19 coverage and the general excellence category, which earned second place and looks at the entire newspaper that was produced on two specified days. Also, every person who submitted an individual piece for the contest earned recognition," said Kayla Green, executive editor. "To me, that speaks to the strength of our entire newsroom and our ability to work together to bring our readers the best. In a small, family owned business like The Sumter Item, which has been

around for 126 years, every person plays a crucial role, and I'm so proud of the dedication our newsroom has shown day after day during such a hard year where reliable, local news is so important." The Item's first-place win for its coverage of the pandemic considered all platforms and all content published involving COVID-19. The staff submission included articles from every reporter on every beat; how the newspaper was designed to present information and tell stories; video coverage; photography; and social media. Also included in the submission was a special magazine The Item published in August 2020 called "Community & COVID-19" that included information people could use to make decisions for themselves and their family as well as features on and a photo story of people in the community to share their experiences. After winning the reporting in-depth category last year for his coverage of Sumter School District's former financial crisis, he was awarded first place for the education beat this year, with specific articles discussing the district's reopening plan, a look into a hybrid classroom and the process of Brewington Academy's move to the Crosswell community. Shelbie Goulding, in her second year as a reporter with The Item and after being recognized in her first as well, won two awards this year: first place for her coverage of the local government beat with articles detailing mayoral candidates' public records, potential election result scenarios and the legality of live-streamed government meetings based on the Freedom of Information Act. Goulding won second place for her police beat reporting with articles discussing the sheriff's office's push for salary increases, telling the story of a former state corrections officer who was shot in an attempted inmate-orchestrated hit and a look back at a fatal Halloween shooting that changed the nation's view of trick-or-treating. Melanie Smith won second and third place for front page design featuring 2020 U.S. Census information and the Sumter Opera House's 125-year anniversary. Micah Green earned six individual awards, including first place in spot news for a photo of a mother and her two children, one wearing a firefighter's helmet, looking on as firefighters exit their home after putting out a fire. Green's second-place awards were for a portrait of a respiratory therapist at Prisma Health preparing to conduct a pulmonary function test outside a mobile health unit in COVID-19 personal protection equipment and for a pictorial shot of two swans forming a heart shape at Swan Lake-Iris Gardens. His third-place awards were in spot news for a photo of a man guiding two women in a canoe from NHCSumter after rain from Hurricane Sally flooded their parking lot; for a

sports feature photo of Sumter High School's Justus Boone in their 5A state playoff loss to Gaffney; and for a photo story of Cpl. Andrew Gillette of Sumter County Sheriff's Office being remembered and laid to rest after being killed in the line of duty. Sumter Today, produced and created by Ty Cornett and Micah Green and hosted by Kayla Green, won five awards, including first place for news video of a Prisma Health community testing site and second place for news video of a community march against racism led by local pastors and law enforcement. With unseasonably low temperatures at night in the tri-county region since Monday, residents have been buying up portable space heaters and pipe fittings and related parts for burst pipes, according to local hardware stores. Staff at Lowe’s, Tractor Supply and Simpson Hardware & Sports said Thursday that space heaters have been big sellers all week. Simpson was the only one that reported Thursday afternoon to still have an assortment of heaters on hand. After Wednesday’s snowstorm dropped 4 to 6 inches of snow throughout Sumter County and about 3 inches in Clarendon and Lee counties, utility providers only reported a limited number of home power outages in the tri-county region. Duke Energy spokesman Ryan Mosier said the provider only had a handful of reported outages associated with the cold and snowstorm on Wednesday night in the three counties. Black River Electric Coop. representative James Moye said the co-op had about 95 home outages in the area, but everyone had their power back on by 5 a.m. Thursday. The stretch of cold nights seem to be causing more problems than Wednesday’s snowfall. According to National Weather Service

Parts of Interstate 95 from mile marker 77 around St. George south to the Georgia state line remained closed Thursday afternoon because of icy patches. Dozens of other roads remained treacherous, according to the DOT. Major roads less traveled were even worse. And troopers warned any water from melted ice left behind after dark would refreeze as temperatures across the state again fell below freezing.

In the time that The Sumter Item has done the Best of Sumter competition, Simpson Hardware has won Best Sporting Goods (including this year), Best Shoes (including this year), Best Fishing (including this year), Best Fitness (including this year), Best Outdoor Furniture (including this year), Best Guns, Best Hardware and Best Propane. We were also awarded Best Locally Owned Business in 2019. Simpson owes any success to our loyal, wonderful customers and talented, helpful associates. We are so grateful! Over the years, Simpson has grown to four stores in Sumter and Manning with over 130 associates. Simpson Hardware Co. was founded in 1951 by the late Carl Simpson Jr. with the purchase of a store in Camden. Several years later, a second store was opened in Hartsville. After selling both locations to extended family members, Mr. Simpson purchased Boyle Hardware in Sumter. That store was opened under the Simpson Hardware name on West Liberty Street in 1961 and became the first ACE Hardware store in South Carolina in 1963. After one move several blocks away, the original Simpson Hardware in Sumter remains on West Liberty Street.

Later that year, a second location was founded at the Palmetto Plaza Shopping Center on Guignard Drive under the guidance of Carl Simpson III. That store expanded rapidly and moved twice within the shopping center. With growth, this basic hardware store became widely known for its sporting goods and lawn and garden departments. The Palmetto Plaza location burned to the ground on April 9, 2000. After several temporary moves, Simpson Plaza Hardware opened in its new building on Wesmark Boulevard in 2002. The other two stores in the company are located on Pinewood Road in Sumter and North Brooks Street in Manning. Each has undergone major renovations in the last nine years. During this recent crisis more than ever, we have remained open to serve our community with essential and nonessential items alike. In the coming years, the Simpson Hardware company plans to grow and expand beyond its current four stores. We currently have varying and new products in fishing, sporting goods, grilling, clothing, gifts, footwear, sunglasses, paint and more. We welcome you to visit any and all locations of this family owned local store.
