Patient have health care rights, also responsibilities BY HOLLY CHASE DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, TANDEM HEALTH Health care is a partnership. As a patient, you have both rights and responsibilities. You have the right to receive treatment provided to you with dignity and respect. Patients should never be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, sexual preference, national origin, handicap or source of payment. You should be provided education by your provider about your health, illness, treatment options and effects of any prescribed course of treatment. When talking about a health care provider, the word provider can refer to any variety of highly qualified doctors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, Certified Nurse Midwives, dentists, licensed counselors and many more. A “provider” is anyone who provides health care for you

and your family. Never be afraid or hesitant to ask questions of your provider or let them know if you do not understand something about your illness or treatment. The law allows for and outlines your right to privacy. You also have the right to review your health record as allowed under the law. Health care facilities are required to make available to you their Notice of Privacy Practices. This is usually available for you to have a copy of, posted in patient areas. You have the right to know the name of your provider and the names of other health care staff that have direct contact with you. You have the right to know their role and qualifications with regard to your health care. As an adult,

you have the right to accept or refuse care unless you have been legally deemed unable to make your health care decisions. Patients have the right to know the cost of their health care and be informed of any applicable payment options or reduced fee options that are potentially available. You have the right to change medical providers if you feel it is necessary. Patients also have the right to know how and where to report concerns and to do so anonymously, if desired. Patients also have the responsibility to “own” their health care. Limit health care costs through appropriate us of medical services. Always use a primary care provider for non-emergency health needs. It is important to proactively seek treatment when needed and

have recommended wellcare activities. Utilize emergency rooms for critical and urgent needs. If you do not have a primary care provider, locate one and begin your routine wellness care. Do not use the emergency rooms for your primary care needs. Continuity of care and appropriate follow up are important. Make sure that your provider has your complete medical history so that they can treat you appropriately. When you withhold information from your provider, you often prevent them from having a complete understanding of your health history and needs. Patients should follow their treatment plans and engage in necessary lifestyle changes to positively impact their health as directed by a provider. Be respectful to

providers and other patients. Always keep your scheduled appointments or reschedule with the provider’s office. Make sure that your provider is aware of all of the medications that you are taking, and take your medications as prescribed. Bring your medications with you to each visit. Never share your medication with others. One critical step to being healthy is “owning” your care. Find the provider that is right for your health needs. Seek routine medical care and follow up as directed. Know your rights and responsibilities as a patient, and always ask questions when things are unclear. It is your health, so find the best health care partner to help you get on the road to a healthier and more informed you!

Prisma Health using the latest technology in the fight against breast cancer

BY PRISMA HEALTH Prisma Health is proud to provide the latest technologies to aid in the fight against breast cancer. In recent months, the team in Sumter and across the Midlands has added two new tools that help with efficient identification and treatment of breast cancer, resulting in opportunities for improved patient experience throughout the cancer journey. In Sumter, the team is now using the Brevara® Breast Biopsy System, a new system that is considered a breakthrough in biopsy efficiency for its ability to streamline what can be a very invasive procedure for patients. The system allows radiologists to x-ray samples immediately and in the same room as the patient. This reduces the time of the procedure and allows the provider to quickly find the areas of concern, reducing the number of samples required for analysis. The system is the only technology that offers this immediate x-ray capability. “Our goal in mammography and breast imaging is to carefully screen and work up breast abnormalities affecting our patients. Then we can guide the patient and their provider to determine the best biopsy technique available that will help direct the course of treatment,” said Dr. Gilbert “Bert” Parker, diagnostic radiologist with Prisma Health in Sumter. “Implementation of this technology helps our team conduct these procedures quicker and with more accuracy than ever before.” In 2020, Prisma Health introduced another new tool that helps to improve patient experience during the treatment phase. The Magseed® device is a small, radiation-free, seedlike device that is easily placed by the radiologist up to 30 days before surgery. It is designed to accurately mark the site of cancerous tissue and help with its removal in surgery, enabling a more flexible and precise tumor localization, while also reducing the need for invasive day-of procedures involving placing a wire or wires through the breast tissue. Smaller than a grain of rice, the device is highly visible using ultrasound and other imaging techniques. This allows the device to be accessed by Prisma Health surgeons from any approach and offers guidance to the distance of the cancerous lesion using a magnetic indicator. Bringing this new product to Prisma Health patients was led by the senior medical director of Oncology Services at Prisma Health–Midlands, Dr. Julian Kim, who thinks the less invasive procedure offers increased dignity to patients who may already be dealing with the emotional toll of losing part or all of their breast. “My female patients

have often shared what it feels like, emotionally, to essentially lose a part of themselves that is so closely connected to their femininity,” Kim said. “Older techniques involving long wire detectors the morning of surgery can compound this feeling, degrading the patient experience. I believe it is our jobs as physicians to seek innovative ways that can save lives, but also preserve dignity.” The introduction of both technologies demonstrates Prisma Health’s continued focus on elevating the patient experience and improving patient outcomes. When should you get a mammogram? Kim reminded the community that the breast cancer survival rate is improving because people are starting to detect it sooner. Two ways you can detect breast cancer are through a self-examination or a mammogram. “A mammogram can detect breast cancer anywhere from two–10 years before that cancer grows large enough to be felt in an examination. Mammograms are key,” Kim said. The guidelines around this can be confusing be-

cause they are constantly changing. Kim offered these tips: • After the age of 40, you should be getting a mammogram once a year. • If breast cancer runs in your family, consult your doctor. It might be beneficial to start getting mammograms before the age of 40. • If you have any questions, don’t skip your mammogram – ask your

doctor. It could save your life. • For more information or to schedule an appointment at the Breast Center in Sumter, call 803–774– 9188.

Early detection using 3D mammography improves survival BY RAVNEET BAJWA, M.D. MCLEOD ONCOLOGY AND HEMATOLOGY ASSOCIATES At the McLeod Center for Cancer Treatment and Research, our goal is to provide personalized

Did you KNOW? A 2017 study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention found that about one-third of women diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in the United States live at least five years after diagnosis. Also known as stage IV breast cancer, metastatic breast cancer is the most advanced stage of the disease. Metastatic breast cancer refers to breast cancer that has spread beyond the breast and nearby lymph nodes to other parts of the body. Patients diagnosed with breast cancer also should know that improved treatments may further their chances of surviving a diagnosis, even a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer. In fact, the American Cancer Society notes that survival rates are based on women who were diagnosed and treated at least five years earlier. In the time since those survival rates were documented, treatments could have advanced even further, potentially improving the five-year survival rates for metastatic breast cancer.

cancer care. We do not look simply at the patient. We also study the tumor to see if they have certain receptors on them so that we can fine-tune, customize and personalize the treatment for each person. One treatment does not fit all — we individualize it to each and every person. Dedicated to the early detection and treatment of breast cancer, McLeod is the only Breast Health Center in the area accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. McLeod received this prestigious acknowledgement of the quality of care it offers to breast cancer patients in 2010 – the first breast program in the region to achieve this designation. Annually, breast cancer is the most commonly treated cancer at McLeod Regional Medical Center. Because a tremen-

dous volume of breast cancer patients are cared for at McLeod, the hospital, staff and physicians have put considerable effort into ensuring state-of-the-art care for women with breast cancer and that the NAPBC standards are met or exceeded. Examples of how McLeod meets and/or exceeds the NAPBC standards include: • Each week at McLeod, the cases of breast cancer patients are presented at the McLeod Breast Conference, which includes at least one attending physician from each of the following departments: medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgery, radiology and pathology. This ensures that each patient’s case is considered from all aspects and in its entirety. • Every new breast cancer patient treated at McLeod is reviewed by the breast conference. • Sentinel lymph node biopsy is performed on women with earlystage breast cancer. • Women are considered for and offered entrance into clinical trials and research protocols. • College of American Pathologists guidelines are followed in the treatment of all breast cancer cases.

• Community breast cancer education, prevention and screening programs are offered in the region. 3D Mammography In 2018, McLeod installed the most accurate mammogram available – 3D Mammography™, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, McLeod Health Dillon and on the McLeod Mobile Mammography Unit. Since that time, this technology has been installed at McLeod Health Cheraw, McLeod Health Clarendon, McLeod Health Seacoast and McLeod Health Loris.

MAMMOGRAPHY SAVES LIVES

Breast Cancer is the leading cause of cancer among women and early detection significantly influences your chance of survival. The National Cancer Institute recommends that women start having annual mammograms at age 40. At McLeod Health, each of our hospitals offer 3D mammography, the most advanced technology for early detection.

How Community Health Centers benefit patients and local quality of life BY HOLLY CHASE DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, TANDEM HEALTH

Community Health Centers, or Federally Qualified Health Centers, are consumer-driven and patient-centered organizations that serve as a comprehensive and cost effective primary health care option for America’s most medically underserved communities. CHCs are nonprofit and assist patients who are confronted with financial, geographic, language, cultural and other barriers. CHCs provide high- quality, affordable primary and preventive health care and often provide pharmaceutical and behavioral health services, as well. CHCs increase access to health care and provide integrated services based on the unique needs of the

and curbside testing sites, delivering 160,000 COVID tests per week. As of August, CHCs across the communities they serve. Located in areas where care country administered 13 million COVID-19 vaccines is needed, they improve access to care for millions of and tested over 12 million Americans regardless of the patients for the virus. Another key to health centers’ accomplishments is patient involvement in service delivery. Governing boards – the majority of whose members must be patients, according to grant requirements – manage health center operations. Board members serve as community representatives and make decisions on services provided. Active patient management of health centers ensures responsiveness to local needs and helps guarantee that health centers improve the quality of life for millions of people through improved access, cost-effective and high-quality care, reduction of health disparities, effective management of chronic illnesses and improved birth outcomes. Health centers not only deliver good quality care but also serve as critical economic engines helping to power local economies. Community owned and operated businesses; health centers employ over 255,000 people and provide 114 million patient visits annually at about 14,500 health care sites across the nation. Every $1 in federal investments generates $5.86 in economic activity across South Carolina. In total, health centers in South Carolina delivered over $1 billion in economic activity. In addition to primary care services, which contribute to a healthier local workforce, health centers provide a comprehensive range of services that promote economic and workforce development in the community and make a significant contribution to the economic viability and growth in the community. Local CHC Impact Tandem Health, a local Community Health Center in Sumter County Tandem Health provides comprehensive primary and preventive health care and social services to medically underserved individuals and families in Sumter County regardless of their ability to pay. Its patients not only get the care they need, but they are treated as individuals, with dignity and respect. This is what health care should be.
