Spring is a highly anticipated time of the year. It brings warmer weather, longer days, blooming flowers and the Inspire! Festival. This will be the second year of this festival, which will take place March 25-April 3, 2022. We are excited to announce the diverse and dynamic lineup of events that the Inspire! Festival has to offer. Some highlights include: Lee Brice Live at Patriot Park Headlining the festival is Sumter native Lee Brice. Lee is very dedicated to Sumter and has made a commitment to play an integral role in supporting the local art community. The opening act for this concert is the very talented Lewis Brice. Every attendee will be beaming with pride to be at Patriot Park experiencing the artistic gifts of these two hometown brothers. The gates will open on March 31 at 5 p.m., which is when the “Parking Lot Party” begins. Sumter Original Brewery will be featuring a new “Inspire!” libation along with many of their crowd-pleasing beers. Sidebar, Willie Sue's and other local restaurants will be serving up delicious party cuisine. Lewis Brice will then open up the show at 7 p.m. followed by Lee Brice at 8 p.m. This concert will SELL OUT! Buy your tickets now.
Walk of Art - Downtown Main Street Artwork by Sumter artists will soon be installed at about 20 stops in historic downtown Sumter for the public to enjoy. A selection of beer, wine and food will be available at each stop, including an Inspire! Festival special-edition beer from Sumter Original Brewery. The Notes Rose up in Flames Temple Sinai Jewish History Center This exhibit explores a different aspect of music during the Holocaust. The amount of talent displaced, suppressed and destroyed by the Holocaust is immeasurable. Through actual documents, concert programs, photos and stories, the visitor is invited to marvel at the accomplishments, be staggered by the restrictions and grieve at the demise of this rich, musical talent. Even when they were forbidden to play and were deported to ghettos and concentration camps, music kept them alive, a touchstone to their humanity. Charleston Symphony Sumter Opera House The Charleston Symphonyʼs season is focused on the artistic celebration of the orchestraʼs ability to bring communities together through shared experiences of the greatest orchestral music in the world. Roger Ackerman was a devoted family man who was passionate and deliberate in what he chose to do in his lifetime. He was a successful businessman who volunteered his time to countless community entities, was the lead in Music Man and the founder of the CART fund. The CART fund has raised millions of dollars for Alzheimerʼs research. The life of Roger Ackerman embodies the following quote from the world-renowned artist, Pablo Picasso: “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” Written on behalf of the Inspire! Festival planning committee by Danielle Thompson.

Roger Ackerman loved the arts, he loved people, and he loved Sumter. He may no longer be with us, but those dear to him are making sure his love of life, his passion for the arts and his impact on the Sumter community continue on in his memory with this 10-day celebration of some of what he held most dear.
Roger Ackerman loved the arts, he loved people, and he loved Sumter.
When Roger passed, his friends, with the blessing of his wife, Deane Ackerman, a talented artist herself, established the Inspire! Festival in his memory. All the events celebrate what he loved and would have attended and financially supported. All the proceeds benefit organizations and causes he either focused his philanthropy on or helped found himself. The Inspire! committee ensures that by having established the Ackerman Legacy Foundation, a nonprofit that funnels money to the four beneficiaries you will find more information about throughout this book. “Roger loved people. He was best at 6
connecting people,” Inspire! committee member Johnny Hilton said. Roger served on a variety of boards and community groups, including the Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce, Sumter Family YMCA, Sumter Little Theatre, Sumter County Gallery of Art, Sumter County Cultural Commission, Sumter Industrial Association and Covenant Place of Sumter. He served as co-chair of the 2002-03 Building Fund for the gallery and was named the YMCAʼs Humanitarian of the Year in 1997. He was an active member of the Sumter Rotary Club for more than 50 years and served as president from 1978-79. He was recognized as Rotarian of the Year in 1982 and 2017 and was named District 7770 Rotarian of the Year in three different decades. He has received Rotary Internationalʼs Distinguished Service Award and was given the Service Above Self Award in 2006, the highest honor given to an individual Rotarian. Roger received the Order of the Palmetto in 2008, the highest civilian honor awarded by the governor for excellence in service. He received Sumterʼs highest honor, the Gamecock City Society Award, in the last months of his life. Instead of receding in illness, he spent his last years dedicated to preserving Temple Sinai and opening the Jewish History Center in June 2018 with an assurance it would be maintained by the Sumter County Museum for its long-term viability. Roger died in September 2018. “He had a goal to make the world a better place,” Hilton said shortly after his friendʼs passing in 2018. “You know the saying leave a campsite better than it was when you arrived? His campsite was the world.” To all who knew Roger, he was an inspiration.

LEE
BRICE LIVE AT PATRIOT PARK
Lee Brice, who grew up in Sumter
and is known for country radio hits such as "A Woman Like You," "Rumor" and "Hard to Love," will be joined on stage by recording artist - and his brother - Lewis Brice for an all-Sumter celebration. When he isn't selling out arenas, writing and recording songs or building new brands like American Born whiskey, you likely can find Brice with his wife, Sara, and two young boys and a baby daughter. Meanwhile, nearing 3 billion spins on Pandora, Brice continues to enjoy massive success at country radio, digital streaming services and on the road. He was inducted into Pandora's "Billionaires Club" in June 2018, becoming only the second country artist behind Keith Urban to receive the plaque. Brice is a Grammy and seven-time CMA nominee and has won two ACM awards. He has taken seven singles to No. 1, also including "I Drive Your Truck," "I Don't Dance" and "I Hope You're Happy Now." In October 2020, "One of Them Girls" became his seventh chart-topping release, according to a CMT.com article linked on Brice's official website. Brice and Carly Pearce won Music Event of the Year for "I Hope You're
Happy Now" at last year's ACM awards. Garth Brooks, Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney and others have recorded his songs, and he has performed on numerous TV shows, including NBC's Today and The Voice, ABC's The Bachelor and FOX's Miss USA 2018. "Rumor" is a single from his self-titled fourth studio album, "Lee Brice," which was released in 2017 on Curb Records. The RIAA Certified Platinum single, his sixth No. 1 hit appearing in the top spot on Billboard, Mediabase Country Radio and SiriusXM's The Highway Top 30 charts, has also surpassed 250 million on-demand audio and video streams in the U.S. with more than 300 million worldwide. His fifth and most recent album, Hey World, was released in November 2020. He performed a New Year's Eve concert at the Sumter Opera House to ring in 2010, the year his song "Love Like Crazy" was the top country song according to Billboard Year-End. That song was the title track of his first of five total studio albums. Gates open at 5 p.m., and the show begins at 7 p.m. with Lee's brother,
Lewis Brice. This is an outdoor event and will be held rain or shine. Chairs and blankets are encouraged! Coolers and tents are not allowed. Pets are permitted onleash only, and you are responsible for cleaning up after your pet. Violators may be asked to leave the premises. The CART Fund
The CART Fund provides funding for cutting-edge research to cure Alzheimerʼs disease. Ackerman helped start CART started in 1996 by getting his fellow Rotary Club members to voluntarily empty their pockets and purses of change at their weekly meetings. The initiative has grown from the Sumter Rotary Club to others in Sumter County, around the region and even made its way across the Carolinas and Georgia. Every penny of donated funds goes to research via grants the nonprofit distributes. As of May 2020, CART awarded $9.2 million dollars in 55 grants to recognized U.S. research institutions All administrative expenses of the fund are paid from interested earned from invested contributions. For the first time, in 2019, grants totaling $1 million were awarded.

Explore the halls of the gallery and experience some of the most exquisite contemporary art in the nation. The Sumter County Gallery of Art is a nonprofit whose mission is to present and promote the visual arts and provide art education opportunities to Sumter, Clarendon and Lee counties. Housed in a renovated state-of-the-art facility next to Patriot Hall, it features rotating shows of both traditional and contemporary art by local, regional and nationally recognized artists. Its three formal exhibition galleries are considered by many in the South Carolina arts community as one of the best exhibition spaces in the state. In 1969, the 4-year-old Sumter Artists Guild decided to open a local gallery to showcase their work and host other artists. After first being housed in the Old Carnegie Library on Liberty Street, with the school district agreeing to lease the building for $1 a year, the gallery moved to an Antebellum Greek revival-style home on North Main Street in 1977. The builderʼs granddaughter, Elizabeth White, became one of Sumterʼs most talented artists and gained national and international recognition. She requested her home be used to promote the arts to the public after her death. The house, which is on the Nation-
al Register for Historic Places, remained the galleryʼs home for 26 years. When the county renovated the former Edmunds High School into a performing arts center, Patriot Hall it was suggested the science wing become the galleryʼs new home. Its current doors opened in 2003. The gallery offers art classes including an adult acrylic painting class and a youth comic book class that being on the Thursday of the festival. Other Spring 2022 classes include in pottery, painting, fiber art, sculpture, color pencil drawing, sequential art, jewelry-making, claymation, yoga and much, much more! Free group tours are available by reservation, and there are catered, opening receptions for all exhibitions. A gift shop is filled with unique items and works of art made by local and regional artists.

The Sumter County Museum is a nonprofit whose mission is to promote the history of Old Sumter District while providing historical and modern educational programming. The museum and its partnering organization, Temple Sinai Jewish History Center, both present a variety of programs throughout the year. The museum features a 1916 historic home, exhibits related to Sumter County, an interactive 1750-1850 homestead and the beautiful Martha Brice Gardens. Be an archeologist and dig for Sumter County treasures in the permanent history exhibit, learn about Sumterʼs namesake, Gen. Thomas Sumter, and wander through structures from the 1800s to discover what life was like in this part of the state at that time. The Jewish History Center, which Roger Ackerman spearhead its establishment, has presented exhibit such as the Anne Centerʼs two-person play titles “Letters from Anne and Martin,” which imagined a correspondence between Anne Frank and Martin Luther King Jr. The accompanying exhbit featured more than 70 seldom-seen photographs from the Frank family. The center offers tours for visiting students for 5th grade and up. Tours can also be tailored to specific ages and interests. Permanent exhibits include an introduction to Jewish traditions, the exploration of Jewish immigrants, stories from Sumter residents, lessons from the Holocaust and oral histories. Sumterʼs only synagogue, opened in 1913, has seen its congregation dwindle, so Ackerman and Jay Schwartz decided to act. When it opened in June 2018, the exhibits represented the only Holocaust museum not only in the Palmetto State but between Atlanta and Richmond. There is always something exciting to see and experience at both venues, including art exhibitions, chamber music, readings, book signings and historical programs.

Gallery After Hours
If you think an art gallery is a place to quietly observe art, think again. The Sumter County Gallery of Artʼs Gallery After Hours will feature The Queen City Jazz Trio with vocalist Nicci Canada from Charlotte, North Carolina. The trio is composed of three long-time professionals – Derrick Exum (who is a Wells Fargo executive in his spare time) on keyboards, Bob Feldman on bass and Billy Bowman on congas. Two are from New York City, and one is from Chicago. Individually, they have worked with some of the finest musicians, including Buddy Rich, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, The Shirellas, Frank Wess, The Belmonts, Lenny Welch, TK Blue, Chuck Jackson, Jim Neely, Frank Caruso and many others. They have been playing together in Charlotte since 2015 and have performed at the Mint Museum, Stowe Botanical Gardens, The Steinway Gallery, South Park Hilton, Charlotte Aviation Museum, The Capitol Grille and many private functions. They play jazz standards, bossa novas and smooth jazz. Canada, a native of Charleston, West Virginia who now lives in Charlotte, was

destined to sing. Her warm, sultry vocals are reminiscent of artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone, but her amazing sound is unique to the gifts and talents she has been given. Canada has performed with many groups in Charlotte as well as the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. The gallery will be open for viewing as music serenades patrons perusing The Supper Table and Maria Brittonʼs Dream Bodies, the former a piece of installation art and the later a mixed media exhibit featuring combinations of painting and sewing. Both exhibitions feature female artists and celebrate women and feminism. Small bites will be provided, and the gift shop will be open.

Artist Talk Micah Green, Grainger McKoy When: Tuesday, March 29, 5:30 p.m. Where: Sumter County Gallery of Art, 200 Hasel St.
Cost: Free, but the gallery accepts
donations Photo by Mia Lee Photography Join Micah Green and Grainger McKoy as they have a conversation about Greenʼs exhibit of photographs on display at the Sumter County Gallery of Art. Micah Green was born in Texas and lived much of his childhood in Mississippi. His nomadic way of life has taken him to Georgia, South Carolina and now Alabama. A graduate of Mississippi State University, Green began taking photographs while working at a shortstaffed newspaper and has since become an accomplished photojournalist working with The New York Times, Bloomberg, Reuters and numerous regional publications including The Sumter Item. Self-taught through experimentation, Greenʼs observations through his camera lens and also his heart have given him an understanding and an emotional tie to the region he calls home. In Greenʼs ongoing series “Hands On, The South” at the Sumter County Gallery of Art, the focus is on the hands of the people he has met through his work as they work and worship, play and protest. Stories that often reflect ugly, entrenched truths abound in the South but there are also stories that radiate life and hope. This duality permeates each story that Green tells as he interacts with, rather than reacts to a scene. Green approaches his work with a sense of wonder. He spends time with the people he photographs, develops relationships, has conversations, and his documentary style becomes softer, more personal - through the
eye of an artist. Karen Watson, executive director of the gallery, notes, “Although Green goes all over the country documenting stories with his lens, the pieces in ‘Hands On, The Southʼ have a decidedly local appeal, taken mostly in Sumter and South Carolina. From Trevor Lawrence greeting a throng of fans at Death Valley to a hug captured at the funeral of a fallen deputy, to Deaconess Selena Smith preparing for a bodybuilding competition, these are Sumterʼs stories.” Green shares his profession, his art and nomadic travels with his wife, Kayla Green, a journalist and writer. He will be joined at the gallery by Grainger McKoy, who along with his wife, Floride, helped furnish the exhibit. McKoy is a world-renowned artist and sculptor.

Brews, bites, views and good company. What more could you want ?
All can be found at Sumter Original Brewery, the first brewery and taproom in Sumter County. SOB (initials intended) opened in March 2020 and features a 15-barrel brewing system. Within the 30,000-square-foot facility are three stories. Watch the game on the first floor, play your own oversized games on the second or take in the view from the third-story rooftop. Gray Shuler started working in the beer industry 14 years ago and tapped into a passion for craft beer. He always dreamed he would one day own a brewery, but he didnʼt think it would be as grandiose as what now sits at 2 S. Main St. Gray then transitioned his career into the restaurant
industry to become an expert in both managing a restaurant and in what makes downtown Sumter tick. Sumterʼs first-ever hometown beer is being brewed by Troy Bervig, who quit his job at a research laboratory to follow his passion. To create. After gaining 11 years of experience in breweries around the country, combining his love of chemistry, his knowledge from his medical years and his passion for brewing, he is ready to welcome Sumter to the brewery scene.
