Iris Festival
Letter from the Chair
The Sumter Iris Festival Commission is so excited to celebrate its 80th festival May 27-29, 2022, at Swan Lake Iris Gardens. After being interrupted for two years, we are back and better than ever! With this being the 80th festival, we are celebrating all things '80s, so read on! This event is Sumter’s oldest and largest festival. The first one was held in 1940, and from the very beginning it has brought thousands of people from around the state to our great city. This year’s festival has some special surprises in store that we hope you will really enjoy. We look forward to welcoming people from across the Southeast, and we hope their stay will be a great one. The Iris Festival is an annual tradition and has been named one of the “Top 20 Events” by the Southeast Tourism Society, as well as one of the “Top 100 Events in the United States” by the American Bus Association. The fun begins on Thursday, May 26, with the Taste at the Gardens. The “Taste” offers great food, prepared by local restaurants and individuals, and music for everyone to enjoy. No need to purchase food tickets this year. Cash will be accepted by the vendors. We are excited to welcome DJ Howie D as our musical guest during the Taste. Tickets are available at the gate for a $5 donation, and children 5 and under are admitted FREE. The event is 6-8:30 p.m. On Friday, May 27, while the Arts & Crafts and Marketplace vendors are setting up, Tandem Health will offer a free health fair at the Swan Lake Visitors Center from 9-11 a.m. The annual Shrine Day Parade will take place on Saturday, May 28, starting at 10 a.m. The parade will begin at the Sumter County Civic Center, move down Liberty Street and turn up Alice Drive.
Saturday night, things move downtown with an '80s Party at Sumter Original Brewery. The DeLoreans will keep things moving with a performance featuring music from the decade that brought us neon clothing and the Rubik's Cube. Put on your fingerless gloves and get ready to dance the night away! Tickets are $20 and available online at irisfestival.org. All three days of the festival are packed with things to see and explore along with live entertainment. Admission to Swan Lake Iris Gardens is FREE. Ongoing events throughout will include Art in the Gardens with featured artists Phil Tuggle and Alexandria Trapp, Gateway to Gardening, Arts & Crafts, Food Court, Marketplace, ”Just Kidding Around” Children’s Area (Fairway), Children’s Art in the Park and so much more. Check this Iris Festival Guide for the times of the events you would like to participate in. I would like to thank everyone who has worked with the 2022 Iris Festival and give a special thanks to the Swan Lake Iris Gardens staff, who keep the gardens beautiful all year. I would also like to thank our sponsors because without them, we could not offer this wonderful event to the public with free admission every year. Most of all, we want to pass along a big “THANK YOU” to our community for all the support and encouragement that it gives us throughout the year. It is truly special to offer this event each year, and it is only possible because Sumter is the BEST community anywhere! We hope you enjoy all the events, and we’ll see you at the gardens! Art in the Gardens
Art in the Gardens and Gateway to Gardening feature both local and regional artists and fine craftsmen. All art media are usually on display with some having emphasis on the Iris Gardens. Woodturning, photography, watercolor originals and even garden art is displayed around the gazebo area for the entire weekend. Back to the '80s
Do you remember when MTV actually played music videos? Whether you were around then or not, you doubtless know the 1980s as a time that has been remembered for bright colors, big sounds and bigger hair! Celebrate the 80th Iris Festival with '80s Night at Sumter Original Brewery on Saturday, May 28, 2022. Time-traveling band The DeLoreans will get the party started at 7 p.m. with the most memorable melodies from the era. The DeLoreans hail from Virginia, where they have been serving up a hot dish of '80s nostalgia since 2008. “We play every genre of music you can think of — pop, dance, rock, new wave, hip-hop, R&B.” band member Melanie Waters said. Veterans of more than 2,000
performances in seven countries, the band has performed for foreign heads of state, as well as three presidents of the United States. Their repertoire includes songs made famous by acts such as Billy Idol, Bon Jovi, Prince, Tears for Fears, Pat Benatar and many more. Unpack your hair spray (you, too, gentlemen!) and your leg warmers for this trip back in time! Sumter Original Brewery is an all-ages venue located at the corner of West Liberty and South Main streets. Leashed dogs are welcome on the third-floor rooftop. The brewery has a variety of refreshing locally crafted beers on tap, along with a selection of wine and soft drinks (proof of age required). Appetizers and sandwiches are also available for purchase. More information about Sumter Original Brewery is available online at sumteroriginalbrewery.com. Each ticket purchase includes one complimentary drink. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at irisfestival.org. Phil Tuggle
ARTIST Phil Tuggle
A
lthough an accomplished artist at heart, Phil Tuggle has an eclectic past. Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1949 to parents who traveled and moved a great deal, Phil was nurtured with his two older brothers. He lived in North Carolina, Florida and England in his early years but lived his teen years in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C., where Phil finished high school. Upon the father's retirement as a military sales executive (and a CIA resource, we now know), the family relocated to Wilmington, North Carolina, in 1968. Phil attended Emory and Henry College, UNC-Chapel Hill and UNC-Wilmington where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences. During school, he was involved in
graphic and theater arts as well as athletics, including track, tennis, swimming and basketball. After entering the workforce, he pursued a master’s degree in engineering management at George Washington University and Old Dominion University. Phil worked primarily in manufacturing process development for 35 years. All the while, he followed his deep interest in the graphic and sculptural arts. Throughout his life, painting, drawing, woodworking, photography and metalwork have consumed his"spare" time. His metalwork has been shown and sold locally as well as in galleries in Charleston, Beaufort and Fernandina Beach, Florida. His 13-foot steel sculpture "Pipe Dreams" is located at the Hasel Street entrance to the Sumter County Gallery of Art. He and his fine art photographer spouse, Mary Tuggle, have also exhibited together at Patriot Hall's Artists in Love show.
