s you arrive and get settled in the community, you will soon discover the people of Suter have great patriotic pride in supporting the base mission, military personnel and their families and demonstrate an overwhelming show of support for deployed personnel and their families. Base personnel return that support to the community through their unselfish work to improve the quality of education, medical care, spiritual life and humanitarian activities. Shaw Air Force Base is located within city limits. City of Sumter government and staff works closely with Shaw on a daily basis, with a team of former and current elected officials, city staff and military retirees in support of Shaw’s airmen, soldiers and their families. Land use near military installations is always a concern. New residential and commercial development along with increasing competition for land, airspace and water access can constrain training, testing and other base activities. Sumter has an active land protection program around Shaw, with over 3,000 acres of land surrounding the base to keep development from encroaching too close.
