talk to local farmers about high prices, and we sit down with the new golf pro at The Players Course at Wyboo. Lake Marion plays host to some of the best summer days out there, and marinas and landings have survived the pandemic and are ready to get you out on the water. Check inside for insight from marina owners and managers and for a list of public, unmanned ramps and access points to the lake. To ensure you’re properly packed up for a summertime trip, we meet the owners of Crossroads Outdoors in Bishopville, who offer great equipment without the need to make a big-box visit. And, of course, we’re ready for programs. Camp Happy Days is returning to Camp Bob Cooper along the shores of Lake Marion, and the fair is returning to Sumter County. Rejoice! And prepare for sticky cotton candy fingers. What’s your favorite thing to do over the summer? What are you looking forward to most? Let us know! Email me at kayla@theitem.com. I’d love to share what our friends and neighbors are getting into. Whatever your summertime pastime is, please enjoy it. We all deserve it.

The Players Course at Wyboo has a new golf pro, and he is ready to support you on the course.

Holy heat, it’s hot. Remember last summer? When everything was closed, the virus squeezing us in its grip? While it cannot go unsaid that there is still much work to be done to rebuild and get many of our neighbors and the rest of the world back on track, this summer has more cause for celebration. We’re not back to normal. I’m not sure we want everything to go back to exactly the way it was before. However, I see a light at the end of the tunnel that was 2020, and in that light, I see gatherings with family and friends, and I see businesses regaining their foundation. I see people wanting and being able to move forward. I also see that mirrored inside these pages. Our summer issue is full of outdoor living. If you’re still focusing on home, we have some ideas on drought-resistant perennials that could be an easy and colorful addition to any home garden. For those wanting to get outside but keep some distance, berry season is in full swing, and there are a handful of local farms in our region that offer u-pick-em or pre-picked produce. I mean, if the cover of this magazine doesn’t get you wanting a cobbler or to eat berries picked straight from the field, I can’t help you. On the professional side of things, we

he new head golf professional at The Players Course at Wyboo loves the game and thinks he’s “in the zone” – as they say – with his new position at the course near Lake Marion. Taylor Jones started his new gig in mid-April at The Players Course and shared recently that the people and the course’s characteristics are some of his favorite aspects of the job. Jones, 31, comes to Wyboo from Rock Harbor Golf Course in the Shenandoah Valley of northern Virginia, where he served as head golf professional for about a year. A lover of the outdoors in general, Jones said he is tickled pink with the move about 500 miles

south from the mid-Atlantic region to the warmth of the Palmetto State. A few years back, he attended the Professional Golfers Careers College in Bluffton and worked also at Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head in Beaufort County, and Jones said he loves the South Carolina weather. Regarding the 18-hole course nestled along the shores of Lake Marion, Jones likes the uniqueness of each hole at The Players Course and also the fast speed of the greens, he said. The course is built within the Wyboo Plantation neighborhood, bringing a lot of members with their own golf carts and different personalities out on the course, which can be fun to see. Most of the

course’s 225 or so members are area residents or split the year with a lakeside home and another residence up north, he added. Jones also likes that the course is semi-private, which allows the membership and the public to come out and play. He said he thinks that aspect can help attract new members. The game of golf can bring out a variety of emotions in people, but he considers that part of a head golf professional’s role. “What I enjoy most is teaching people to fall in love with the game,” Jones said, “or, if they have fallen out of love with the game, to fall back in love with the game. The overall enjoyment that people get from coming out and playing golf is great to watch. People get to enjoy

the outdoors, and there is something that every skill level of golfer can always try to improve on.” According to Jones, the game can teach maturity and life lessons, including “how to dress, how to be patient and how to be humbled.” Currently holding a PGA Associate classification, Jones’ goal is to become a PGA Member by the end of this year. Having worked in the industry for about five years, he doesn’t get to play the game as much as he used to, he said. Looking back on when he played regularly, Jones described his own golf game as “up and down” and “consistently inconsistent.” “I played well,” he said. “Not good enough to be paid for it, but well enough to play.”

Recreation is getting back to normal on Lake Marion. Words by Sharron Haley

I

It’s June. Time for some fun and sun on one of South Carolina’s favorite recreational venues – Lake Marion. COVID-19 wreaked havoc with businesses throughout the state, nation and world, including local businesses that derive their livelihood from the waters of Lake Marion. While COVID-19 slowed down recreational and angler activity on Lake Marion in 2020, 2021 looks like these businesses are headed for a great year for the folks who own businesses that are directly related to boating and recreational water activities.

12 JUNE - JULY - AUGUST 2021 | LAKESIDE

From the end of March through mid-April 2020, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster had an executive order in place closing all public access to waterways in the state, including boat ramps, landings, piers and docks. So far in 2021, folks are flooding to Lake Marion. They’re ready to get out of the house and back to what they love to do: fish, boat, swim and just float around on the water with their friends. Located on the northwest corner of Lake Marion lies Pack’s Landing, 9890 Pack’s Landing Road in Pinewood, a favorite spot

for both anglers and recreational boaters. “Last year, we were slow,” said manager Jim Whitaker. “This year, we’re doing fine.” Right now, fishing is great, according to Whitaker. While Pack’s caters more toward anglers, recreational boaters interested in the upper portion of Lake Marion launch from their marina as well. Pack’s Landing is open seven days a week from daylight to dark. Another entry point to the lake’s northern shores is Elliott’s Landing, 2010 Eliott’s Landing Road, Pinewood.

“During the shutdown, we had campers who just wanted to get away from town. They wanted to get outdoors and away from crowds,” said owner Alice Weathersbee. Elliott’s is a favorite spot for both recreational water enthusiasts and anglers as well as folks who love a good ‘ole crawfish boil. “We have Louisiana Red Crawfish,” Weathersbee added. “We started farming them in 1987. At first, we couldn’t get folks interested in them, but now they’re in high demand. We’re selling out every weekend.” Not all businesses were negatively impacted from COVID-19, including Carolina King Retreat and Marina, 2498 Belser Road, Summerton, which is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Office manager Virginia Stamey said they stayed pretty busy last year. Like other marinas up and down Lake Marion, Carolina King has a convenience store stocked with snacks as well as gas on hand for boats and vehicles.

Taw Caw Campground and Marina, 1328 Joyner Drive, Summerton, is also staying busy. Taw Caw is open seven days a week and offers boaters a variety of goods from its convenience store. The New Scarborough’s, 1326 Fowler Road, Summerton, has been remodeled. Along with a full-service landing, it features Lakeside Paradise Restaurant where folks can eat in or take out for a full day on the lake. Randolph’s Landing at the end of S.C. 260 south of Manning is looking a little different in 2021. The RV area has been improved, and the area around the convenience store has been changed. Located adjacent to the dam, anglers can be seen almost every day fishing from the pier at Randolph’s. With a convenience store and a restaurant nearby, Randolph’s is a favorite for anglers, particularly folks wanting to reel in those monster cats that Lake Marion is known for. Randolph’s also sponsors catfishing

tournaments throughout the year. Located nearby is Lakevue Landing, 1543 Camp Shelor Drive. Lakevue is a marina along with a restaurant and bar. Boaters and anglers can launch right at the eastern end of Lake Marion and right into some of the prime fishing holes.

Need a reason to visit? For a list of fishing tournaments on Lake Marion, call the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce at (803) 435-4405 or go to www.clarendonchamber.net. For more information on the happenings as well as a list of marinas and campgrounds in and around Lake Marion, visit Santee Cooper Country, 9302 Old Number Six Highway in Santee, call them at (803) 854-2131 or go to www. santeecoopercountry.org.

T

he Sumter American Legion Fair will return for its 104th year with rides, food and even more entertainment after COVID-19 canceled everything but the food last year. The fair, located at 30 S. Artillery Drive at the Sumter County Fairgrounds, will take place on Oct. 19-24 instead of its usual September timeline to allow for more rides and entertainment for its return, as well as stay cautious of the ongoing pandemic.

“We’re just happy we can do it,” Fair Manager Peter St. Onge said. “It’s a safe, family friendly event.” Sponsored by American Legion Post 15 Sumter and Piggly Wiggly, the fair will have 35 rides, more than 30 food vendors and about 70 commercial vendors returning to the fairgrounds. According to St. Onge, a whole section of the county fair will be dedicated to motocross entertainer Cycle Circus, the largest FMX

freestyle entertainment in the world today that combines action sports athletes with the theatrics of a cycle circus. The fair will also feature Rosaire’s Royal Racers, with three pig breeds racing at each 20to 30-minute show throughout the day. St. Onge said Amusements of America will return with its 35 full rides after being absent for a couple of years. In the past, the fair collaborated with Amusements of America for 60 years, but the dates didn’t match up in the

most recent years until now. The fair will also focus on children’s involvement by holding an art exhibit for local students and running a cattle barn with kidfriendly activities. “Tommy Newman and Brittany Stevens will be running the cattle barn this year,” St. Onge said. “They’re planning to bring back a lot of the categories that we haven’t had in years and expanding reach.” The fair will be reaching out to surrounding counties, such as Lee, Clarendon and Kershaw, to participate in the fair this year, bringing more spectators into Sumter. The cattle barn will also bring a taste of 4-H activities back, which will also bring in more people. “We’re going to have a horse show,” Stevens said. “Mainly for the

kids, we’re going to have a costume contest. We’re going to have a lot of halter classes. Hopefully, we’ll have some of the draft horses.” St. Onge said the Sumter County fair’s full return will be a must-see event for families this year after so much was canceled last year due to the pandemic. “Coming back out to the fair gives them a sense of normalcy,” he said. “It brings back a family environment and a local community environment. A berry good season ... and plenty of places to pick fresh fruit nearby

Words by Kareem Wilson Photos by Micah Green

A PUBLICATION OF THE SUMTER ITEM 25

It’s that time of the year again for fruit fans to rejoice: the long-awaited pick-your-ownberries has arrived. As the crisp summer breeze and sunny days are finally here, farm fields are quickly turning black and purple with clusters of blueberries and blackberries. Berry picking has been one of the most popular outdoor recreational activities in the Midlands during the summer season. Though most may be sad to learn that pick-your-strawberries season is over, you still have the opportunity to pick some other juicy berries this summer. Whether you bake them in a pie, churn them into ice cream or pile them in a bowl and sprinkle them with sugar, the sweet flavor of a freshly picked bursting berry will bring huge crowds out this summer. For many, you don’t have to go far to spend sunny days picking juicy, ripe berries with family and friends with these local farms.

SUMTER COUNTY Dorr Farms 5225 Dorr Acres Road in Gable After marrying, Marie and Maynard Dorr started the small family farm in 1991. The one-acre garden quickly expanded to the now 10-acre garden with two acres of strawberries and one acre of blueberries and blackberries. Located on the edge of Sumter and Clarendon County, the farm is a fan favorite attraction for pickers to enjoy a taste of the rural part of the county. Dorr said the farm always sees swarms of visitors on the weekends and speculated they could see more as blueberries start ripening. Visitors can start picking their own blueberries in June, and it will last through the last week in August. Besides berries, the farm also grows a wide variety of farm-fresh foods, including squash, zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, sweet corn, sweet potatoes, broccoli, collards, beans, red potatoes, watermelon

and sweet onions. They also sell pure raw honey and honey-based products. The Dorrs started the Sumter Farmers Market in 2017 at USC Sumter as a way for local farmers and vendors to sell their produce and products. The farm is Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. The farm is open for school trips, private groups and all ages. Besides picking, people can also enjoy playing with the farm animals or enjoy the calm nature scenery. For more information about scheduling or questions, call (803) 495-2639. Hilton Farms 2691 Wedgefield Road in Sumter Located a few miles from the heart of Sumter, Hilton Farms produces certified organic ‘Heaven on a Hill’ blueberries. You may pick your own blueberries and your own pecans or purchase the already-gathered items. Besides blueberries, the farm produces paper shell pecans and coastal Bermuda hay.

William James, a mid-size, Sumter County row crop farmer, and Scott Mickey, a farm business consultant with Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service, spoke in late May on hopes for summer harvesting of corn and soybeans in the Midlands. For row crop farmers, this year featured the first spring of optimism since about 2013 with a tight worldwide supply on

corn and soybeans pushing up prices. But supply chain shortages on inputs – such as fuel, fertilizer, chemicals and labor – as a result of the pandemic have driven up planting costs by 35-40%. James provided the example of nitrogen. It is a major input for growing corn and also key for cotton and from January to May. Nitrogen increased from $180 per ton to $350 a ton. Input costs impact profit margins, and

people do not always understand that big picture when they hear that prices are going up. Then, a very dry April and a projection for a hot and dry June created big concerns for corn yields. A long-time farmer with about 2,000 acres in the Rembert/Stateburg/Dalzell areas of northern Sumter County, James said it has been an unfortunate set of recent circumstances. “In the big picture, the farmer is coming off four or five, more or less, lean years,” James said. “Then as soon as the prices look good – like he might come out of the hole – the inputs increase in price and the dry weather comes in.” A good rain can change a farmer’s perspective, though, and James was hoping for that by early June.

34 JUNE - JULY - AUGUST 2021 | LAKESIDE

He said he finds it’s best not to put a lot of weight in long-term weather forecasts, such as 30-day outlooks or longer. “The weatherman can’t seem to predict the weather and what’s going to happen in two or three days,” James said, “so I don’t put much stock in the long-term because he has a hard time doing day to day.” Just by its nature, farming is a risky business, and weather is a worry every year. He puts his trust in what he believes is a higher power. “My hope is in the Lord, and He will send me a rain when I am supposed to have one,” James said. “All I have to do is go to work every day and do the best that I can.”

A section of William James' cornfields is shown from late May. The disparity from an irrigated section and non-irrigated section of farmland is obvious. Many row crop farmers have irrigation systems, but none have full irrigation for all acreage. It's very common for less than 25% of farmland to be irrigated, according to Clemson Cooperative Extension agent David DeWitt.

STATEWIDE PERSPECTIVE

Mickey, the consultant with Clemson Extension, said it has been an economic struggle for state farmers since before the floods of 2015. He added it would be unfortunate to have a weather event this year and the

crop is not as good, especially since the prices are really high comparatively. A good year could “put some more fuel in the tank” for farmers, Mickey said. “Because we have had to pull out some these last couple years when it has been pretty tough financially,” he said. “It’s

not like we are going to hit home runs and score lots of runs, we’re basically just getting back in the game. A good year will help us rebuild some working capital, rebuild some equity in the business. It’s not going to solve everyone’s problems, but it's going to help."

Parts of Interstate 95 from mile marker 77 around St. George south to the Georgia state line remained closed Thursday afternoon because of icy patches. Dozens of other roads remained treacherous, according to the DOT. Major roads less traveled were even worse. And troopers warned any water from melted ice left behind after dark would refreeze as temperatures across the state again fell below freezing.

A large order

Sumter may not have the rolling hills found in cities farther north, but one neighborhood road between Alice Drive Elementary School and Second Mill Pond was slanted enough for those barely broken-out speedsters to provide hours of entertainment the morning after a handful of inches of snow powdered, then iced, the area. The Associated Press reported the largest snowfall — 8 inches — was found in Williamsburg County near Andrews but claimed areas around Sumter picked up 7 inches. There were about 4 inches on the lawns lining the street where a group of kids were playing Thursday morning. “I think it caught us all off guard,” said Robert Jones, whose two sons, Wyatt, 8, and Jeremiah, 12, were taking turns racing on

Beat any summer drought with these perennials Story and photos by Melanie Smith

D

uring what feels like an already very dry spring this year, every drop of rain can feel like a blessing. And while our grass withers and sounds crunchy under our feet sometimes and the annuals we've planted seem doomed if they aren't watered three times a day, the perennials are often still the plants shining and showing off. As our climate warms, drought-tolerant perennials (plants that survive the winter and grow again the following spring) will become even more important in our gardens for reliably beautifying our landscapes and keeping the butterflies and bees coming around. Some perennials can also be a source of food for migratory birds who visit our area each year. Clemson University Extension encourages watering plants well when adding them to your landscape until their root systems are established or through long dry periods when the plants are still new. Only then can they withstand hot, dry conditions. "Root establishment can take from one to several years, depending on the original size of the plant. Larger plants will take longer to establish," according to the extension's website. There is plenty of variety and something for every color palette and interest among perennials that do well in our climate. Here are a couple categories with examples for you to try, taken from the extension's page of droughthardy plants. For its full list of drought-tolerant trees, shrubs, perennials and more, visit https://bit.ly/2R9bLss.

Century plant, in the agave species — This plant has large, fleshy leaves with serrated edges and can grow to be quite large. It could be used as a focal point in your garden or in a grouping. It will only bloom once in its life, but it might not bloom for decades. Hens and chicks — These little plants are available in a variety of leaf colors and shapes. As their name implies, the "mother" plant will produce numerous offspring. They like a sunny spot in well-drained soil. Stonecrop, in the sedum species — There are many varieties to choose from, some more tolerant of dry soil than others. But according to the blog for Plant Delights Nursery in Raleigh, North Carolina, "If you are not sure whether it is time to water a stonecrop, err on the dry side ... when it doubt, give it drought."

UNIQUE FOLIAGE

Purple heart plant — This has small pink blooms on purple leaves that spread out from the center of the plant. It makes a great accent plant in the front of a flowerbed that stands out because of its color. Lamb's ear — This plant has fuzzy leaves you'll want to reach out and touch. The fuzziness of the leaves almost makes them appear silver or gray. They will produce new plants near the parent plant each year.

PHOTOS BY MELANIE SMITH Above: Hens and chicks – These hens and chicks already have numerous “offspring” plants. Bottom right: Purple heart – This popular purple heart plant provides great foliage color with small pink flowers.

PLENTY OF BLOOMS

Echinacea — Also known as coneflowers, this plant native to eastern and central U.S. has an abundance of flowers throughout the summer and into fall. It's available in many varieties and hybrids, but the most well-known is the purple type. "Coneflowers have a high degree of drought resistance once established, making them a great addition to a water-wise landscape. They are also deer resistant, meaning that deer do not prefer to eat them,"

according to the extension. Butterfly weed — This native plant with orange flowers attracts butterflies and requires a sunny spot. Butterfly bush — There are many varieties of this plant that flowers all summer, and can grow quite large, up to 15 feet. It also requires a sunny location.

Everything you need RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER Story and photos by Kareem Wilson In the town of Bishopville hangs an arrow sign overhead on a lamppost downtown that introduces a small brick store with a giant sign in sandy writing that reads: Crossroads Outdoors. This is Bishopville native Jack Smith’s store. Smith is the owner of Crossroads Outdoors, an outdoor sporting goods store that specializes in equipment such as fishing rods, camping lanterns, hiking shoes, outdoor sports equipment and more of what’s needed to go hiking, swimming, hunting, fishing, camping and anything else outdoors. Smith opened the store in May 2015 after noticing people in Bishopville wanted to purchase sporting goods and outdoor equipment but didn’t have a close enough store to shop at. “We decided then that we would see

what we could do about giving Lee County a sporting goods store,” Smith said. Smith remembers seeing other outdoor and hunting supply stores in Bishopville years ago, but they either closed or moved out of town. For the first three to four years, Crossroads experienced slow traffic sales as residents were used to going to other locations to get outdoor supplies. “When years pass and something’s not available in the area, people find places to get what they want, and then they have to form new habits after a new business shows up here,” he said. It took some time, but eventually, Crossroads found its footing within the community. “It’s getting much better,” he said. He even said that while the coronavirus pandemic sent shock waves through the

business and food industries with many retailers shutting down, the outdoor industry instead saw a growth in activity because more people were going outdoors to enjoy nature during the pandemic, which meant a sales boost in sporting goods supplies. He said he thinks most people like coming to his store because of the “slowness” and variety of equipment. “With a small community like this, it’s easy to get in and out. There’s not the hustle and bustle here like there is in a larger town, and some people are attracted to that,” he said about his customers. “It’s definitely more than we expected." He’s ecstatic to see his business booming during such a time of hardship for others and also

attributed the store’s growth to Diana Rollins, the manager of Crossroads. Rollins has been the manager for a year now. During that time, she has increased the store’s brand

awareness on social media. She said sometimes people will come in and be surprised at what they have to offer at their small country store. She updated the store’s website, handles their social media and helps spreads awareness of the store. She said it must be paying off because they’ve attracted more visitors to their store since last year. She said she thinks because Bishopville is a rural area sandwiched between other cities such as Sumter, Hartsville and Florence, visitors stop in town to shop and pop into some of local stores including Crossroads Outdoors. “We’re in a perfect location – we get a lot of traffic coming through from those areas, so people see we’re in a good spot downtown,” she said. She said many of their loyal

customers love the “small-town feel” of the store and the personal connection they have with their employees and customers. If a customer asks about a specific item that’s not in-store, Rollins will order it for them and let them know when it arrives. “I have a whole notebook full of names and phone numbers,” she said. Both Rollins and Smith have repeat customers they personally know because of the time and attention they give to each person who steps through their doors. “It is that personalized, oneone-on-one attention that we give our customers, and I think they appreciate that (more) than a big-box store where you’re just someone coming in and out,” she said. So, whether people are planning camping trips or weekend fishing outings or looking to get out of the house for some recreational activity, Crossroads Outdoors will have the supplies they need for any outdoor adventure this summer and for the rest of the year. However, for Smith, it’s more than selling items. “We’re just trying to bring some business back to this small county and small town,” he said. “From what I can tell, it seems to be working.”
