estivals. They're back. After two years of seeing large events and springtime celebrations not happen, a decline in COVID-19 cases this sping has sprung the ability to return to downtown main streets, garden rows and lakesides for a season of community festivals. I'm excited to once again have a spring issue of Lakeside where we dedicate a lot of the pages to festival information. From the Sumter Iris Festival's longawaited 80th year to Mayesville's Mary McLeod Bethune Legacy Festival, from Manning's Striped Bass Festival to Rembert's Black Cowboy Festival, the area has such a wide array of reasons to gather. Also inside these pages, we have two really great feature stories. Our cover story is about Allen and Victoria Bailey, a Sumter couple that bought and run what is now the area's only trophy and engraving shop. With
everything from Ja Morant's key to the city to everyday special gifts, they're eternalizing the stories of the community. The other feature is about an engineer at SKF who suffered an injury in a motorcycle accident that left him in a wheelchair. Through his engineering skills and want to pursue a hobby in this adjusted life, he delved into photography and created a mount for his camera on his wheelchair. There's also an article about mulching and how it can help your garden or yard this year. Whether you're here for the festival going or the storytelling, I appreciate you picking up a copy of this magazine. Happy reading, y'all.

Casting off 2-day Striped Bass Festival returns to Manning, Lake Marion for 1st time since pandemic
By Kayla Green
It’s been three years. Three years since fishing lines were cast or cotton candy was spun out of sugary thin air. Since girls pageanted, musicians belted, parade floats rolled, tractors revved, food smells wafted and families and friends perused arts exhibits, vendors, crafts and activities in downtown Manning. Now it’s all coming back. For the first time since 2019, and for the 41st year, the Striped Bass Festival will return to Manning and Lake Marion. With COVID-19 on a downward trend from the most recent omicron variant, the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce will host its flagship event April 29-30. From the opening ceremonies, street dancing, carnival rides and live music on Friday night to the parade, vendor booths, food, kids activities, car show and truck show, art show and namesake fishing tournament on Saturday, there will be something for everybody. Organizers hope everybody is itching to get back out.

2022 SPRING FESTIVAL GUIDE
A PUBLICATION OF THE SUMTER ITEM 9
“I think everyone is ready to do something normal. This brings people from all over the state,” said Carrie Anna Strange, festival committee chair. Striped Bass is a celebration of spring. It’s a tribute to the beauty of the county and the region, and it’s a salute to the fish that fill Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie, which make up Santee Cooper Lakes and put the region on the fishing map of the world. April in Clarendon County is a sight for winter-weary eyes. Festival goers will be surrounded by azaleas, wisteria, irises, tulips, geranium, roses, magnolias and more colors and blooms amid a landscape with strokes of rural countryside, smalltown architecture and lake views. The event is an economic driver for Manning and Clarendon County that has missed out on the last couple years as the pandemic, at one point or another,
shuttered everything from large-scale gatherings to indoor dining. Now the community can once again expect locals and visitors alike to spend money at hotels, restaurants, gas stations and bait stores, in addition to buying from the festival vendors directly. Entrance to the festival, such as attending the parade, listening to the live entertainment, checking out the vendors and watching weigh-in for the fishing tournament, are free. Other aspects, such as buying from the vendors, food options and participating in the fishing tournament, have fees. Festival T-shirts will be available for purchase at the event as well as ahead of time at the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce.

Mary McLeod Bethune Legacy Festival celebrates Mayesville education legend By Alaysha Maple
F
or over two decades, the Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Legacy Festival served as a source of empowerment and entertainment for Mayesville and surrounding communities. Back from its hiatus due to COVID-19, residents will highlight the legacy of its hometown hero again. Mary Jane McLeod, born July 10, 1875, was the 15th of 17 children and first of her family born free, according to National Women’s History Museum. At the age of 9, she was afforded the opportunity to pursue an education near Mayesville and later attended Scotia Seminary in North Carolina and Dwight Moody’s Institute for Home and Foreign Missions in Illinois. After graduating college, she taught across South Carolina and Georgia, the museum says. Married with an infant son, Bethune moved to Palatka, Florida, in 1899 and shared her educational passions with the state. She established a Presbyterian 12 APRIL - MAY 2022 | LAKESIDE
mission school in Palatka in 1899, the Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute for Negro Girls in 1904 and later merged with Cookman Institute in Jacksonville to become Bethune-Cookman University in 1929, where she served as president until 1942. As an educator and activist, Bethune served in many capacities nationally. She served as the eighth president of the National Association of Colored Women; founded the National Council of Negro Women in 1935; participated in presidential conferences on social issues concerning children; served as special adviser on minority affairs to President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Great Depression; was the first African-American woman to head a federal agency when appointed to the Division of Negro Affairs of the National Youth Administration in 1936; and served alongside W. E.B. Du Bois and Walter White as an adviser on interracial affairs at the
United Nations' charter conference. Bethune’s legacy inspires millions around the world and is the reason Mayesville will hold its 23rdannual Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Legacy Festival May 20-22. “The festival is significantly important to the town of Mayesville and Sumter County because we’re celebrating the history of one of our own,”Patina Calhoun, vice chairwoman of the festival, said. “She was born in Sumter County in the town of Mayesville and went on to have a notable career nationally as well as internationally, and so we want to pay homage back to her legacy and all of the things she has done to make our community better.” Until Clarendon County locations are confirmed, the three-day event will be held in Mayesville at the Mary McLeod Bethune Learning Center and Art Gallery. The festival parade on Saturday, May 21, will feature Academy Award-winning actor and humanitarian Louis Gossett Jr. as grand marshal, and the Gospel Fest on Sunday, May 22, is a “bring your lawn chair type of event.” Calhoun encourages those from all over to come see what they're missing out on, specifically from a historical aspect, during this upcoming tourist attraction. “Mayesville has a lot of history even though it is a small town," she said. They expect more than 3,000 visitors on their property at 4585 Spencer Road in Rembert come May 26-28. The festival’s origins came after the owners decided to host a local event to shine light on the

“Swan Lake is known for the Japanese iris, mostly, so believe it or not, we’ve had people that come from Japan, people that come from Australia,” festival chair Lynn Kennedy said. “I can’t believe how many people go around just to see flowers and that type of stuff, but it’s actually a wonderful festival that Sumter should be proud of.” The blooms along with the festival’s activities draw in 40,000-60,000 people throughout the long weekend event, according to Kennedy. However, the blossoms depend on the weather. The fun weekend will begin with an opening ceremony at

Swan Lake Iris Gardens' Heath Pavilion on Thursday, May 26, with the annual Crowning of the King and Queen followed by the Taste at the Gardens from 6-9 p.m. The ceremony will feature great music and great food from local caterers. Come Friday, vendors will begin setting up for the festival at Swan Lake Iris Gardens early in the morning before it opens to the public from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Kennedy said they’re expecting 125 vendors to attend this year. The vendors are strictly merchandise booths only; no information booths. She advised attendees to bring cash for purchases. The vendors they plan to bring in for this year’s festival are arts and crafts, planters and gardeners, food and more that showcase the culture of Sumter. “The Iris Festival is an event that was first developed to kind of showcase Swan Lake Iris Gardens,” Kennedy said. “It’s gotten to be more of a cultural event as the years progressed. We do have children’s art, artists that are coming from all around.” The vendors will be set up on Saturday from 10 a.m.,-6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The children’s area will be open and free all three days. Kennedy said Saturday, May 28, will be the big day as community members take part in the Sumter Iris Festival Parade before the festival opens at 10 a.m. The parade will begin at the American Legion Fairgrounds and travel to Alice Drive Middle School. “It should be an awesome Iris Festival,” Kennedy said. “We’ve missed it for two years, and we’re looking forward to getting back into the groove and have a great event for our community and the visitors who come into Sumter.” For more information or to become a vendor, sponsor or parade participant, visit www.sumtersc.gov/irisfestival.

Engineering the perfect shot Mike Bond developed a knack for photography after an accident bound him to a wheelchair. But his art and his engineering skills know no bounds. Words by Shelbie Goulding Photos by Cal Cary

ngineers are a unique breed. They’re a hands-on type who need projects to keep themselves busy in and out of the office. One engineer deems this true even though he can’t move one of his hands while the other has no feeling. He stays busy enhancing the quality of life for others like him who look to keep life moving forward. Life changed for Michael “Mike” Bond, an engineer with SKF in Sumter, after a motorcycle accident in 1993. The wreck resulted in a spinal cord injury that left him with an “incomplete” injury that was still “catastrophic.” He has no feeling down his spine, no movement from his left hand and no feeling to his right hand. Mike didn't let that stop him from living his life. He continued to work as an engineer and years later got into a hobby that could work for him thanks to his creative mind and wife. He joked that she couldn’t stand hearing the clicking of the chair anymore, so she gave him a push. “She was like, ‘Why don’t you pick up photography? You were always into photography, and your artsy part of your mind also leads you that way, so why not give it a shot?’” Mike said. “You’re too smart to be this bored,” Carol Bond, Mike’s wife, told him. “You need to go buy a camera. You took pictures before you got hurt. Go buy a camera." And that’s how that started. Carol said photography is something he adores and has a natural knack for. In 200607, Mike rolled out to their back porch, set up a tripod facing the pond on their

property and took his first photograph. He immediately fell in love with the art. “My very first shot was right behind you, and it was across the water, and it was a beautiful February afternoon,” Mike said. “Got one of the most beautiful sceneries I’ve ever shot.” Carol has been astonished at his work ever since. He then made flowers his main focus for practice. “When he started shooting, I would see
his photo and I’d be like, ‘What in the world are you looking at? I don’t see that,’” Carol said. “It was his vision. I mean, how can a mechanical engineer with that much out of the frame have so much of a good left side?” “The reason I started with flowers, they can’t get away from me,” Mike joked. He spent a couple years learning how to work with a Canon, adjust the lighting and settings, editing tools and more. He used a tripod for a while, but it wasn’t the best

match for his situation, especially when he got into wildlife photography of nesting birds, ducks in flight and his favorite subject, the hummingbird. “I had to do something different, and my camera started getting bigger,” he said. “I can’t get close enough to a lot of the objects, therefore, my camera lenses started getting bigger, and I couldn’t hold them anymore. “I don’t have the ability to hold the camera like a, let’s just say a typical able-body person would use both hands, one to steady and one to do the shutter button. I can’t even feel the shutter button.” A tripod ended up not working either. It restricted him from getting the perfect shot. “It worked great, but it didn’t have movement,” he said. “If I wanted to turn the camera, I had to turn my

chair.” The engineer in him knew this was going to be a challenge, but it was one he was excited to tackle. He needed a mount with free range motion that could shoot above his shoulders and rest on his chair. “I’ve actually named the product. It’s called C4 Freedom, and mainly that came from my neck injury. It was a C4 that caused my paralysis,” Mike said. Carol told Mike he looked like a kid at Christmas the first time he got the mount attached to his wheelchair, but it took time to get his design to where it is today. In less than a couple minutes, C4 Freedom was attached to his wheelchair. He first cranks the apparatus holder onto the side of the wheelchair before sliding the apparatus into it. The apparatus arches over the top of his chair, stopping in front of his face; it can be adjusted up and down over his shoulders. The camera is then attached at the top, and it is ready to go, able to move in a 260-degree range, Mike said. “It’s pretty quick and easy,” Mike said, noting the total weight is 20 pounds on his chair. The most unique part about the design happened by accident. For a while, Mike was missing shots because his right hand couldn’t feel the shutter button, but in 2013, he had a plunger style button that kept dangling from his camera that got on his nerves. He put it in his mouth and accidently hit it with his tongue, taking a photograph. “That’s how I catch the hummingbirds,” Mike said with pride. “Now I got this hand to the steady, this hand is just pushing the lens around, and I’m snapping the photos with my tongue.” All set up, Mike rolled to the back yard with the equipment floating on the apparatus. He stationed himself in a spot, adjusted the lens and flipped his hat backwards, looking into the camera for his perfect shot. “It’s a neat design, and there’s not another one in the world,” Mike said. “It is my own, and it’s patent-pending right now because people need it.” The process of making the mount was originally about solving his own problem, but he realized many like him needed this device for other hobbies and activities. Mike joked that the mount could even help with target practice; he is an avid hunter and fisherman. 30 APRIL - MAY 2022 | LAKESIDE
WHERE DOES MIKE TAKE THE PERFECT SHOT?
Mike began taking photos in his backyard, a place he calls a “Hummingbird Haven” that starts blossoming in late April, early May. He also frequents local parks and gardens like Swan Lake Iris Gardens. One of his favorite places to photograph is Magnolia Plantation and Gardens in Charleston.
WHERE CAN I FIND MIKE’S PHOTOGRAPHS?

C4 Freedom is something in demand for those unable to take a photo or do other activities. He hopes it will make a difference for others as it has for him. “I know there are other people who need this apparatus in order to take them to another quality of life. It will get them there,” Mike said. “This one, particularly, is not available yet, and hopefully in the near future it will light up somebody’s eyes like it did mine.”
INSPIRING PHOTOGRAPHERS AND FRIENDS
Walking into the Bonds' household is like Mike’s personal art gallery. A portrait of his own hangs in every room, sometimes more than one to a room. “You are your worst critic. I don’t need anybody else to beat me down. I’ll be my own,” Mike said. He’s never hung his work in an art gallery. However, he has submitted his photos to magazines across the state and nation, as well as submitted a few works in a national contest. In 2018, Mike won a national bird 32 APRIL - MAY 2022 | LAKESIDE
photography contest with Birds & Blooms Magazine against 5,000 entries. His winning piece: “Nooks and Crannies.” “I was shocked as much as anyone,” Mike said after winning. It all happened thanks to a friend, Mike said, who convinced him his photographs were good enough to submit. A lot of Mike’s work is actually thanks to friends and other photographers who inspire him. They saw his talent while Mike knew he had to push himself to compete with other wildlife photographers in the game. “I’ve got to be able to do the same thing if I want to keep up with the mainstream and stay in line with top photographers,” he said. Mike has many photographer friends who share “gifts of the trade” with him, but none compared to his first friend since the accident. Johnny Horton, of Tennessee, was a roommate with Mike after the accident; both experienced spinal cord injuries around the same time and went through rehab together. “It’s one of those kind of bonds that you have with someone because you’re
sharing the same incident. You’re sharing the same points in life – everything has changed,” Mike said. “I started modeling my photography behind him.” Horton was a welder before he broke his neck a month after Mike’s accident. The pair had similar interests of riding bikes, racing, hunting, fishing and even photography. They became inseparable. “We were in the same room together,” Horton said. “We palled around the whole time we were down there and done a lot of things we shouldn’t have together, sneaking off and going to bars, and the nurses and doctors didn’t know where we were at,” he laughed. “We had a blast and made the best of it.” That inspired Mike to live life to the fullest, and he always went to Horton for advice, especially when he got back into photography more than a decade later. “I guess I inspired him a little bit there,” Horton said. “He’s done really well. I’m really proud of him. The photographs he’s taking is really amazing. He does a great job.”

o-owners Allen and Victoria Bailey say their business’ motto is “We are here to make you shine.” It is Sumter Trophy Shop, “but it’s not your average trophy shop” since the business offers an array of products and touches every aspect of the community, according to the Baileys, who recently sat down to discuss the full-scale trophy and engraving operation. First off, it is important to know that sports and recreational trophies only represent about 50% of the shop’s business, Allen Bailey said.

“If you need something engraved, we engrave it,” Victoria said. Take that literally. Bibles, belts, bracelets, guns, sabers, wrenches and tools, liquor bottles, car engine parts, even stethoscopes. The list goes on, they said. Plaques are also a key part. “I like to say we memorialize heroes, celebrate champions and shine the light on community angels,” Allen Bailey said in describing the work. Gifts for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, retirements (including military) and numerous other occasions are part of the business model now as the Baileys have learned “to think outside the box” to be successful in today’s world, he said. The Baileys got their start in 2012 when they bought C.A. Harler Trophy Shop. Now, they are the only business in town after Danny’s Trophy Shop closed a couple of years ago. In January, the business name

was changed to Sumter Trophy Shop, or Sumter Trophies and Engraving, LLC, to be official. “When we started, we thought we were just going to be doing trophies, and we do build a lot of trophies,” Bailey said. “But we do plaques, nametags and on and on. The best way to say it is we interact with every aspect of the community, whether it’s a church, a school, a cooperation, government. Everything from participation, to medals, to the key to the city, to the winner of the upcoming dog show.” The shop is basically the only trophy shop now in five counties – Sumter, Clarendon, Lee, Orangeburg and Williamsburg – and that generally serves as its service area, according to Bailey. He described the work as “seasonal,” but there are a lot of seasons. Fall, winter and spring sports to name some. Spring is especially busy with so many festivals and outdoor activities occurring and weddings also, the Baileys said. At times, Allen Bailey used to put

in 90-plus-hour weeks. But Victoria is usually at his side. “It was just two people servicing five counties for a long time,” he said. “It was just us two.” Now, the business is up to four employees, and the 90-hour weeks for Allen are less common but still occur at times. But the Baileys consider the work “a service ministry” to others. An example is the shop makes memorial plaques for several area funeral homes when people pass away.

The work is always “purposeful and gratifying,” they added, since they are generally honoring “people who have done wonderful things in the world,” to include the military and police officers. Among all the news stories on death and strife in the world, the business is uplifting, Victoria Bailey said. “Then, you come in here and you are
putting together an award ‘for 25 years of amazing service’ or you are engraving something that is about servanthood and fellowship, and it feeds us,” she said. “That’s why I know we are right where God would have us to be.” The couple is from Sumter, love their hometown and believe the work is their mission.

Mulch gives your landscape more than good looks By Melanie Smith
I
n our climate of high summer heat and the possibility each year of drought conditions, a simple addition to our property that can make all the difference for plants and the landscape is mulch. Using mulch will help keep moisture in the soil, reducing the need to water plants and making them more resilient to that week of 100-degree temperatures the Midlands always seems to experience each summer. It will also keep weeds from sprouting in your flower and vegetable beds and can help smother existing weeds before they spread and lead to more. Over time, as organic mulch breaks down, it will also feed the soil and make your landscape healthier as a result. Mulch can also help pull your various garden areas together to give them a more cohesive and beautiful look. One of the best (and free) sources of mulch is what some call “gardeners’ gold” – leaves. Instead of bagging them to put at the curb to be taken away to a landfill in the fall, put this resource to great use and spread the leaves around your plants. As the leaves decompose throughout the year, plants will get a good dose of natural nitrogen fertilizer. If you have plenty of pine trees, rake their needles and add these to your garden beds. Don’t forget to add some to your vegetable garden, too – it will help keep the weeds from robbing your beefsteak tomatoes of the nutrients they need. If your yard has more leaves than you can use at one time, try leaving a pile of them in an out-of-the-way corner or spot in your backyard or in black plastic trash bags with a bit of water for moisture inside, and let them break down there. In a year, you’ll

have what’s called leaf mold, which is a fantastic soil conditioner or mulch. You can dig this into garden beds or simply spread it on top. According to Clemson Extension, this type of mulch “may only last for 1 to 2 years before completely breaking down and moving into the soil. But, in doing so, it adds significantly to the soil structure and quality. In a vegetable garden, it can be tilled into the soil at the end of the season.” So, how much mulch to add, and when? The extension service advises that it depends on what type you use, but for established plants,
springtime is the best season to put down new mulch, before weeds have a chance to dominate. The faster the mulch decomposes, the more frequently you’ll need to replenish it. Pine needles can last 2 to 4 years, while leaves break down quickly. According to the extension, “As the plants grow and fill in the bed areas, less and less mulch is needed.” If you use wood mulch or another mulch with small pieces, use a layer 2 to 3 inches thick. More than that can negatively affect your plants’ roots. Grass clippings and leaves shouldn’t be more than 2 inches thick
to avoid matting, which will prevent water and nutrients from flowing through to the soil below. The only mulch the extension service advises to avoid completely is hay because of all the weed seeds it contains. Straw similarly can have seeds which will sprout, but straw can still be used in your vegetable garden. Mulch is a great way to add beauty and resiliency to your garden and has many benefits. Happy gardening this spring and summer.
BENEFITS OF MULCHING — Mulches keep the soil cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, thus maintaining a more even soil temperature.
— Mulches protect the trunks of trees and shrubs from damage by lawn equipment. — Mulches help prevent soil compaction.
— Mulches prevent soil splashing, which not only stops —Mulched plants have more erosion, but keeps soil-borne diseases from splashing up onto roots than plants that are not mulched because mulched the plants. plants will produce additional roots in the mulch that — Mulches prevent crusting of the soil surface, thus improving surrounds them. the absorption and movement of Source: Clemson University Extension water into the soil.

Do I still have to wear a mask? What about kids? BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The government's new guidance on masks for vaccinated people has left some Americans confused and sent businesses and states scrambling to adjust their rules. Target and CVS on Monday became the latest retailers to say vaccinated shoppers and workers don't have to wear masks in stores. New York said it will adopt the new mask advice this week, while California said it
will wait a month. About 123 million Americans — 37% of the population — are fully vaccinated against coronavirus, and more than 157 million, or 47%, have received at least one dose.
WHAT'S THE NEW ADVICE? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week said people who are fully vaccinated no longer need to wear a mask indoors or outdoors and can stop social distancing in
most places. Fully vaccinated means two weeks after the second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, or two weeks after the one-dose Johnson & Johnson shot. "If you are vaccinated, we are saying you are safe, you can take off your mask, and you are not at risk of severe disease or hospitalization from COVID-19," Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the CDC director, said on "Fox News Sunday."

Gov. McMaster’s order allows students to opt out of mask use FROM STAFF REPORTS South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster’s executive order on May 11 allows parents to opt their children out of wearing masks in public schools because of widespread coronavirus vaccine access for adults in South Carolina. Parents of children in public school must fill out a form to opt their children out. The form developed by the state Department of Health and Environmental Control is available for Sumter School District students at www.sumterschools.net. It can also be downloaded from DHEC’s website at https://bit.ly/3eYb7az. A separate form must be filled out for each child. The governor’s order also limits local governments from issuing mask ordinances based on his prior emergency declarations related to the COVID19 pandemic. Those governments will have to find justification for such mask rules within their own ordinances.
