DEPARTMENT OF THE AIR FORCE 20th FIGHTER WING (ACC) SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, SOUTH CAROLINA

Dear Patrons, Welcome to Shaw Air Force Base, home of the men and women of the 20th Fighter Wing, Headquarters Ninth Air Force, U.S. Air Forces Central Command and U.S. Army Central Command! We are extremely pleased, after a 4-year pause, to once again open our gates on May 21-22, 2016, to showcase the professionalism and capabilities of your United States Air Force and that, coupled with its Department of Defense and international partners, make it the greatest air power fighting force in the world. Throughout the weekend, you will learn how the Wing and our Team Shaw partners comprised of the world’s best Airmen, Joint, and Coalition Partners provide combat-ready forces to meet any challenge, anytime and anywhere. The 2016 Shaw Air Expo and open house — “Thunder Over the Midlands” — is the first of two 20th Fighter Wing events organized to formally commemorate Shaw Air Force Base’s 75th Anniversary. By celebrating the Installation’s rich history and heritage, we publicly recognize the base’s successful partnership with the citizens of Sumter, the Midlands, and across the great state of South Carolina. This is our simple way to give back to our friends and supporters who, for the past 75 years, have exemplified “uncommon patriotism” matched by unwavering support for all the men and women of Team Shaw. It is truly an honor to serve and protect our nation among such fine citizens. On behalf of Team Shaw, we are privileged to share this incredible experience with you and truly hope you’ll enjoy the 2016 Air Expo and open house! Please keep in mind that a variety of factors could result in changes to the event calendar, so please continue to check www.shaw. af.mil/Home/Air Expo for the most up-to-date information. Once again, welcome! Sincerely

STEPHEN F. JOST, Colonel, USAF Commander 4 SHAW AIR FORCE BASE

F-80/T-33 SHOOTING STAR Designed, built and delivered to United States Army Air Forces in just 143 days during World War II, the F-80 Shooting Star was the first jet fighter used operationally by the USAAF. Although built during WWII, the F-80 did not see combat until the Korean War, where it served with the U.S. Air Force. As the U.S. armed forces’ first successful turbojet-powered aircraft, the F-80 is credited with helping to usher in the “jet age” in the USAF. The closely-related T-33 Shooting Star jet trainer remains in service worldwide.

Nicknamed for its tendency to shake as it approached its stall speed, the BT-13 Valiant trainer became the most widely-used American training aircraft of World War II. As part of a three-phase training program, pilots would complete primary training in a PT-13, PT-17 or PT-19 before moving on to the more complex BT-13 for more advanced training. Shaw’s first operational trainer was the BT-13, which arrived in 1941.

Known as both a “living museum” and “aerial monument” of U.S. Air Force history, the U.S. Air Force Heritage Flight features modern fighter and attack aircraft flying alongside aircraft from World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The result is an aerial display of modern and historic U.S. air power that honors the sacrifices of the men and women who have served in addition to those who are currently serving.

U.S. ARMY OV-1 MOHAWK

Built as a joint U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps project for a modern battlefield surveillance aircraft in the late 1950s, the OV-1 Mohawk was the first turboprop aircraft to enter U.S. Army service. Although the aircraft was notoriously slow, its triple-fanned tail and engines mounted on top of the wings gave the OV-1 great maneuverability. Although retired by the U.S. Army in the mid-1990s, it still actively serves in Argentina.

P-51 MUSTANG "QUICKSILVER" Among the best and most well-known fighters used by the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, the P-51 Mustang operated primarily as a longrange escort fighter and ground attack fighter-bomber. Originally overlooked by the USAAF, the P-51 did not see action with American forces until 1943. Once its potential had been developed, the aircraft was utilized in nearly every combat zone during WWII, and later fought in the Korean War. Reserve and Air National Guard units continued to make use of the P-51 until it was phased out in 1969.

F-4U CORSAIR "KOREAN WAR HERO" Nicknamed “Whistling Death” by the Japanese due to the distinctive sound caused by the engine’s air intake, the F-4U Corsair carrierbased fighter performed effectively in World War II and the Korean War. Introduced in 1942, a time when the Japanese seemed to be an impossible enemy to defeat, the addition of the F-4U to landbased U.S. Marine fleets on Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands permanently turned the tide of air combat in favor of the Allied Forces.
