LEO

Music stars honor Elvis Presley in NBC tribute to 1968 Elvis Presley had an impact on countless people, but Mac Davis was a direct beneficiary. The singer of such tunes as “Baby Don’t Get Hooked on Me” and “One Hell of a Woman,” Davis also is a prolific songwriter who co-wrote (with Billy Strange) “Memories” for Presley’s 1968 comeback special. Davis performs it as that show is recalled in NBC’s new “Elvis All-Star Tribute” Sunday, Feb. 17. Blake Shelton plays host to a lineup that also includes Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez, John Legend, Ed Sheeran, Alessia Cara, Pistol Annies, Little Big Town, Josh Groban, Shawn Mendes, Darius Rucker and more. The genial Davis says he appreciates “the respect they’re showing” to the comeback special and to Steve Binder, its director (who appears in the new program). “It was not an easy thing to do,” maintains Davis. “I was not in (Presley’s) close circle of friends, but I was around enough to know it was a difficult job to get him to do it. I’m glad he did, though.” “Memories” came to be when Davis was asked to write something Presley could sing both before and after one segment of the 1968 show. “I never did figure out how to do that,” Davis muses, “so I just wrote a song about looking back over the years, and it really was the beginning of my career. It was one of the best things that ever happened to me.”

You might have to deal with unexpected expenses. Fortunately, you’ll receive something lasting in return. With good negotiating skills, or by making proper arrangements, you’ll reach a favourable outcome.

VIRGO

Mac Davis performs in NBC’s new “Elvis All-Star Tribute” Sunday.

Presley also recorded the Davis compositions “In the Ghetto” and (also co-written with Strange) “A Little Less Conversation.” Davis modestly reasons, “I just happened to fall in there at the right time. After the comeback special had done so well, they decided to cut an album in Memphis, and they asked me if I had anything. Frankly, I sent ‘em everything I had at the time! I had a tape of 19 songs, just myself and a guitar.” Several talents in the new special also are heard on the companion album “The Best of the ’68 Comeback Special,” principally comprised of Presley cuts – such as a rendering of “Memories” that Davis, who also has been an actor (“North Dallas Forty,” Broadway’s “The Will Rogers Follies”), is pleased to see included. Davis recalls that at the time of his Elvis association, Presley was “upset by the fact that The Beatles had taken over at No. 1, and he wanted to start singing songs that weren’t just pulled out of his movies ... not that there weren’t some good songs that came out of them, but he wanted to be more of an artist than a movie guy. So, I tried to write something good, and it turned out to be good.”

You might have had a quiet week planned but the very opposite is what’s in store for you: there will be a lot of action and a number of unexpected events. Consequently, you will also experience considerable delight.

LIBRA Numerous changes will begin to make themselves felt in your life, both professional and personal in nature. You should teach yourself to relax so as to decrease your stress.

SCORPIO Your social life will become much more active. A few friends will motivate you to sign up with them for art lessons, a yoga course or some other wellness-based activity.

SAGITTARIUS Your boss will offer you a promotion on a silver platter. Even if you’re maddeningly short on time, you’ll be extremely motivated to take on new professional as well as personal challenges.

CAPRICORN A trip will likely be added to your itinerary. You’ll finally feel like you’re in the mood to celebrate and you’ll organize a gathering of friends. You’ll discover a new spiritual approach.

AQUARIUS Several intrusions might disturb your sense of calm. If you trust your family and friends to help you, you’ll come into a newfound sense of wonder and happiness.

PISCES You’ll need to seriously consider the pros and cons before making a decision. It’s possible that others will pose numerous questions to

which you won’t always have a response.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January 29 and addressed to Mueller

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,

Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Bruce Willis’ Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN “Looper” (2012): Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt play the same character at different ages in this clever, time-tripping assassination story. “Red” (2010): Willis does everything he does best, in terms of action and humor, in this graphic-novel-inspired tale of former government agents who reunite to battle a common threat. “Sin City” (2005): It’s tough-guy time yet again for Willis, playing a down-andout policeman trying to protect a stripper (Jessica Alba). “The Whole Nine Yards” (2000): Spoofing his rugged image, Willis is amusing as a hit man whose stay in the suburbs isn’t as quiet as hoped. “The Sixth Sense” (1999): An understated Willis is as fine as he’s ever been as a tormented psychologist advising a boy (Haley Joel Osment) who sees dead people. “Armageddon” (1998): Willis is typically tough, and good, as an oil driller who leads his team into outer space to destroy an asteroid. “The Fifth Element” (1997): A cult-classic dip into sci-fi finds Willis as a futuristic cabbie who may hold the key to keeping the world intact. “Twelve Monkeys” (1995): Terry Gilliam’s effectively grim fantasy casts Willis as a prison inmate sent back in time to prevent a plague that will ravage the world. “Pulp Fiction” (1994): As a boxer whose plans are short-circuited, Willis is a big contributor to Quentin Tarantino’s superb ensemble cast. “Die Hard” (1988): Willis cemented his screen image as wisecracking New York cop John McClane, who’s in the wrong place at the wrong time when terrorists overtake the Los Angeles building where his wife works.

‘Glass’ has less shine than its forerunners Ever since his success with “The Sixth Sense,” which now goes back 20 years, it’s been clear that M. Night Shyamalan is a filmmaker who likes to stretch. That hasn’t always worked, but two examples where it has are “Unbreakable” and the relatively recent “Split.” The writer-director merges characters and situations from those movies in “Glass,” named for the character Samuel L. Jackson played in “Unbreakable.” He turns up again here, as does that film’s Bruce Willis, whose alter ego is a self-styled, special-powered vigilante on the trail of the multiplepersonality villain played by James McAvoy in “Split.”

“A STAR IS BORN” One of the most durable stories in Hollywood history became a hit all over again recently, with Bradley Cooper making his directing debut (and revealing hugely impressive confidence in doing that job) while also starring as a superstar singer-songwriter whose career downslide coincides with his discovery of an aspiring talent ... played by someone who really was born for the role, Lady Gaga. While Andrew Dice Clay and Dave Chappelle also are in the supporting cast, the standout performer in that realm clearly is acting veteran Sam Elliott as Cooper’s brother. Cooper and Gaga translated their teamwork into the real music world with the success of the soundtrack album, whose hit single “Shallow” accounts for one of the film’s eight current Oscar nominations. DVD extras: “making-of” documentary; four music videos; “Jam Sessions and Rarities.” ››› (R: AS, N, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

He also reprises his role here, and it’s only a matter of time before all of those figures converge – with Sarah Paulson in another American horror story as a psychiatrist who surveys all of them. That may sound rather dry, but don’t worry: The stuntmen and special-effects experts eventually earn their keep here. Shyamalan’s ambition with “Glass” is clear: It’s pretty bold for a moviemaker to go back to two of his earlier projects and attempt to merge them, but the director has built something of a cinematic universe of his own. He set the groundwork for “Glass” well, but the catch is to make the combination work fully. Fans of “Unbreakable” likely will enjoy seeing Willis in his role again as much as he appears to enjoy playing it again. Indeed, he puts forth more conviction and energy as he has in some time, and he’s been working quite a bit ... which speaks to his relative level of interest in each piece of material. Of course, he knew what he was getting into here, having worked with Shyamalan before. That also goes for Jackson and McAvoy, the latter of whom actually is given the most to take and run with. That could be a matter of his again playing several characters rolled into one, but he’s the real protagonist of “Glass,” being the fiend pursued by Willis. And he is still every bit the fiend, though “Split” was overall a stronger story on its own, the same argument that can be made for “Unbreakable.” It certainly helps to have seen “Unbreakable” and/or “Split” to get the most out of “Glass,” but it’s not an absolute requirement. The downside is that in trying to cobble all of the pieces together, Shyamalan makes “Glass” a mere reflection of its former selves.
