SUMTER ITEM FILE PHOTO Members of the Lakewood High School Choir practice in April 2018 before a performance at the New York City Jazz Festival.

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com The Lakewood High School Concert Choir along with guest singers from Morris College are among a select group of musical performers that were a part of Gov. Henry McMaster’s inaugural ceremony recently at the Statehouse in Columbia. A Sumter School District spokeswoman and a staff member from the state’s Inaugural Committee shared details Friday about Wednesday’s ceremony. Lakewood’s choir and three singers from Morris will sing as one performing group just before McMaster’s public swearing-in ceremony, said Caroline Anderegg, communications director for the Inaugural Committee. Only three other choirs from across the state will perform at the ceremony, according to Anderegg. Those include an ensemble from the private Hammond School in Columbia, the Claflin University Concert Choir from Orangeburg and a choir from the S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, based in Greenville. Each performing group was selected to participate in the event, she said. At the end of the swearing-in ceremony, all the choirs will perform “God Bless America” together, Anderegg said. Lakewood’s choir has achieved numerous accolades in recent years, including being recognized in 2015 as a Grammy award-winning music program in the education category. The choir has performed at the world-famous Apollo Theater for the New York City Jazz Festival, at Carnegie Hall and in New York City and in Chicago, among other cities.

The CW’s ‘Roswell, New Mexico’ joins the list of series revivals

WEEK OF JANUARY 13 TO 19, 2019 THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: CANCER, LEO AND VIRGO

ARIES There will be many unexpected events this week. At work, you’ll be trusted with a task that will require you to juggle large sums of money. Your salary will also see a boost.

TAURUS You’ll want to eliminate all of your negative feelings by getting into shape. You’ll get rid of lots of nervous energy by going to the gym.

GEMINI If you’ve been worried about your career path, you’ll finally see which direction it should take. You’ll also find the solution to a health problem you’ve been struggling with for a long time.

CANCER At work, you’ll be overwhelmed by a large number of clients. At home, there are many social events to manage and everyone counts on you to organize them.

LEO

BY JAY BOBBIN

Jeanine Mason and Nathan Parsons

Well rested, you’ll be able to tackle work situations with renewed vigour, which will result in a promotion. You’ll be offered your boss’ job but you may decide to start your own business instead.

VIRGO

As television’s revivals and reboots reach into the new year, the complicated love story of a human and an alien is among the latest. “Roswell” launched a number of careers during its 1999-2002 run on the now-defunct WB Network, including those of Shiri Appleby (“UnREAL”) and Katherine Heigl (“Grey’s Anatomy”). The saga is reborn as The CW – The WB’s successor – debuts “Roswell, New Mexico” Tuesday, Jan. 15. The cast is led by “So You Think You Can Dance” Season 5 winner Jeanine Mason as Roswell returnee Liz, and Nathan Parsons (who also worked for executive producer Julie Plec in “The Originals”) as old friend, policeman and secret extraterrestrial Max. With other characters also present again, such as Heigl’s Isobel (now played by Lily Cowles), the lively Mason stresses the revisited “Roswell” is a show for and about today. “We’re honoring Liz as she was in the original book series (by Melinda Metz),” she notes, “and acknowledging that this is a border town. The political climate is a part of our show.” Steven Spielberg’s supernatural-familiar Amblin firm is among the production entities involved, and delving into Roswell mythology held great appeal for Mason. She adds that the show also is “about otherness. Obviously, there are aliens, but it’s also about how we can all feel like an ‘other,’ and what it means to belong. Who are you, and how does that differ from the narrative that your family or your community or your government

might be telling you? It’s really up to us to decide who we are, and that is at the center of the series.” Mason has compared notes with the original Liz, since Appleby is the director of one of the “Roswell, New Mexico” stories. They’d crossed paths earlier at a farmers’ market, and Mason says, “When this came about, she was nothing but enthusiastic and supportive from the start. She reached out by e-mail, which was very kind, and wished me all the best. And then, it worked out that she directed our ninth episode! If we came back for Season 2 and she directed all 13, I would be happy.” Miami native Mason knew co-star Parsons from working on “Bunheads,” and she had a recurring role on “Grey’s Anatomy” last season. Given her background overall, it may not come as a surprise that “Roswell’s” new Liz gets chances to dance in the show. “We’ve been able to sneak it in a bit, which has been so fun,” Mason confirms with a laugh. “There’s a moment early on where Counting Crows music plays, and who doesn’t want to jam to that? And we found another moment later in the season, so it’s in there.”

Instead of fighting a losing battle, you’ll escape to a sunny destination and relax. This is a wise choice that will be lots of fun. You’ll come return home with a clear head.

LIBRA You’ll be extra sensitive this week and have the feeling that everything is working against you. Life is sending you the message that you need to make a change.

SCORPIO You’ll have to weigh the pros and cons of a situation quickly in order to make an important decision. There will also be an occasion to dress up, such as an important work dinner.

SAGITTARIUS There will be lots of work this week but make sure you don’t neglect any of the small details. You’ll redouble your efforts after a conversation reveals some important information.

CAPRICORN An accomplishment will put you in the spotlight. You haven’t always been comfortable being the centre of attention but you’ll overcome your shyness.

AQUARIUS You’ll start looking for a new house, or think about renovating or redecorating the one you currently have. Your family will take a lot of your energy this week.

PISCES You won’t bite your tongue this week, especially if someone wants you to stay quiet. Being outspoken will help get you out of a financial bind and may even bring in some extra cash.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,

Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Clint Eastwood’s Top 10 Movies “Gran Torino” (2008): Directing himself as an actor here, as he’s done many times, Eastwood is superb as a crusty war veteran forced to confront his bigotry. “Million Dollar Baby” (2004): Everything Eastwood does on this Oscar-winning drama is so superb, it’s easy to overlook that his performance as a boxing trainer is as sterling as his directing. “Mystic River” (2003): Eastwood directed Sean Penn and Tim Robbins to Academy Awards in this intense drama of grown friends from childhood. “The Bridges of Madison County” (1995): Eastwood shows wonderful tenderness – and stunning scene composition, as this story requires – as director and star (with Meryl Streep) of Robert James Waller’s story of middle-aged romance. “In the Line of Fire” (1993): Playing a hero with flaws became Eastwood, seen as a veteran Secret Service man trying to prevent a JFK-assassination repeat. “Unforgiven” (1992): Eastwood redefined the screen Western in this grim Oscar darling. “The Outlaw Josey Wales” (1976): Among Eastwood’s finest Westerns post-“Fistful,” this drama (which he also directed) casts him as a farmer who targets his family’s murderers. “Dirty Harry” (1971): No list of Eastwood’s best is complete without his initial, Don Siegel-directed turn as the maverick San Francisco police detective tracking a serial killer his own way. “The Beguiled” (1971): Also working with Siegel here, in a melodrama regarded in Europe as a classic, Eastwood took a gamble as an injured Civil War soldier trapped in a girls school. “A Fistful of Dollars” (1964): An international superstar was born with Eastwood’s original portrayal of the Man With No Name, which he did thinking it would just be fun to travel to Spain.

Clint Eastwood carries ‘The Mule’ Clint Eastwood is the Hollywood equivalent of the engine that could: Quite admirably, he just keeps going and going. And at an age where it might be challenging enough just to direct a movie, he also still puts himself front-and-center as its star. “The Mule” is the latest of those exercises, and it gives Eastwood a great character: a senior citizen whose personal life is on the ropes, to put it mildly, but he finds surprising redemption and financial success for himself in becoming a drug transporter – or a “mule” – for a Mexican cartel. Where this becomes much more than a standard crime drama is in the role and how Eastwood plays it. Regrets? This man has had a few ... actually, many more than a few, especially where his long-neglected ex-wife and daughter are concerned. The daughter is played by Eastwood’s own offspring Alison, giving their scenes together an authenticity you can’t buy. Past Eastwood colleagues Laurence Fishburne and Bradley Cooper resurface as DEA agents who eventually get clued into the old-timer’s activities, and Dianne Wiest has some heartbreaking moments as the ex-wife. However, there’s no doubt that “The Mule” belongs to Eastwood, and what’s especially impressive and gratifying is that he knowingly uses it to let his image show some wear and tear. Those with degrees in psychiatry might speculate how much the Hollywood veteran wants his latest alter ego to mirror the effects of the lengthy career run he’s had himself. For viewers, this might just be the most vulnerable Eastwood has allowed himself to be seen since “The Bridges of Madison County” – and that’s almost a 25-year gap. Even in recent films that he’s only directed, such as “The 15:17 to Paris,” brawn and bravado have been the qualities mostly in the spotlight. With “The Mule,” Eastwood gets a lot more personal on a very basic, human level ... and it’s somewhat endearing to see that from the man who has given pop culture such legendarily steely images as those of The Man With No Name and “Dirty” Harry Callahan. With “The Mule,” Eastwood generates a story and a character that keep you compelled and intrigued to find out how things will end up. That means everything in what principally is a two-hour portrait of a single figure, confirming that its driving force isn’t done making the day of moviegoers just yet. Jamie Lee Curtis

“HALLOWEEN” What if the original thriller “Halloween” hadn’t yielded several decades of follow-ups and only had a direct, decades-later sequel? That’s the refreshing conceit of this marvelously effective latest edition, which basically erases all those other movies and plugs right into the very first one. Franchisekeepers David Gordon Green and Danny McBride clearly are huge fans of that film, and they hold very true to it as murderous Michael Myers (played partially by the original actor, Nick Castle) wreaks havoc on the small Illinois town of Haddonfield again. You just know former babysitter Laurie Strode still has to be around, and Jamie Lee Curtis returns to the part with new reasons for the character to be wary of the newly escaped Myers ... namely, her daughter and granddaughter, played by Judy Greer and Andi Matichak. Series originator John Carpenter is an executive producer here. DVD extras: five “making-of” documentaries; deleted and extended scenes. ››› (R: AS, N, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

CREED II

“THE OLD MAN & THE GUN” This fact-inspired portrait of a career criminal who just can’t give up robbery, though time clearly is working against him, suits Robert Redford ideally. Besides being his own character, the crook folds in many reminders of other Redford alter egos – very particularly, the Sundance Kid. Directorscreenwriter David Lowery casts very well around the star, with Danny Glover and Tom Waits as felonious associates, Casey Affleck as a cop on the robbers’ trail, and a wonderful Sissy Spacek as a woman Redford’s alter ego encounters while he’s on the run. Though Redford had said this would be his last acting project, he’s since dialed that statement back. DVD extras: five “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by Lowery; photo gallery. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “GOOSEBUMPS 2” Originally subtitled “Haunted Halloween” to coincide with the season of its theatrical release, this edition of the R.L. Stine-inspired franchise finds two youngsters (Jeremy Ray Taylor, Caleel Harris) unwittingly unleashing ventriloquist dummy Slappy (who’s given voice by Mick Wingert) ... and causing a whole bunch of horrifying trouble by doing so. Author Stine himself becomes part of the action, as personified by Jack Black, who reprises the role from the preceding “Goosebumps” movie – though the actual Stine also makes an appearance here as the principal at the boys’ school. Wendi McLendon-Covey, Madison Iseman, “Saturday Night Live” alum Chris Parnell and Ken Jeong also are featured. DVD extras: five “making-of” documentaries; deleted scenes; outtakes; sing-alongs. ››› (PG: AS) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “SPEED KILLS” John Travolta plays several characters rolled into one in this fact-inspired action tale, casting him as a vastly wealthy man who also happens to be a speedboat-racing champion ... a trait that may be an asset as his covert dealings in the drug trade position him very uneasily between DEA agents and mobsters. Katheryn Winnick (“Vikings”), Jennifer Esposito, Matthew Modine, James Remar and Kellan Lutz also are in the cast. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “LEGO JURASSIC WORLD: THE SECRET EXHIBIT” Shown by NBC and Syfy during the recent holiday season, this animated adventure plays off the video game inspired in turn by the enormously successful movie series. The plot here – set between the “Jurassic Park” and “Jurassic World” film sagas – involves the effort to move several cloned dinosaurs in time to enhance the top-secret exhibit suggested by the title, but that mission proves to be quite complicated. Owen and Claire, characters played by Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard on theater screens, are represented in Lego form. DVD extra: bonus content. ››› (Not rated) “THE PINK PANTHER CARTOON COLLECTION: VOLUME 4” Though the character originally was conceived for the opening credits of the first comedy to star Peter Sellers as inspector Clouseau, the animated Panther took on a life and popularity of his own that enabled this group of short subjects initially released between 1971 and 1975. Some of the tales attempted to factor in topics that were becoming prominent at the time, such as preserving the environment and advocating for animal rights. ››› (Not rated) (Also on Blu-ray)

Sumter students compete using TechFit

Students at Alice Drive Middle School have been creating a game since class began in August using elements of technology and physical exercise. The activity follows a TechFit curriculum, which seeks to spark science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) interest in middle-schoolers by getting them to design and implement technology-based fitness games. The students were going to compete with their dodgeball-like game at Purdue, which was canceled because of snow, but got to compete virtually via Skype.
