Ann Curry reunites Vietnam vets in Season 2 opener of PBS’ ‘We’ll Meet Again’
THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: ARIES, TAURUS, GEMINI
Week November 11 to 17, 2018 ARIES You’ll be at the head of a group taking part in a highly memorable activity. The outcome will reflect the effort you put into the project. And you’ll overcome a bit of shyness in the process.
BY GEORGE DICKIE
TAURUS You’ll have to adopt numerous responsibilities this week. You’ll succeed at effectively arranging your priorities. Additionally, people close to you will help you draw up a strategy for being more efficient.
GEMINI Planning a return to school isn’t easy. There’s always the matter of deciding on the most favourable courses, ones that correspond to your values and life goals. Perseverance and support from those closest to you will be your keys to success.
CANCER When faced with a choice that will have a big impact on your future, you’ll have to weigh the pros and cons before deciding. You might also join a spiritual movement, which will allow you to significantly broaden your horizons.
Ann Curry hosts “We’ll Meet Again,” which returns for its second season Tuesday on PBS (check local listings).
As PBS’ “We’ll Meet Again” returns for its second season in this week of Veterans Day, host Ann Curry kicks things off appropriately enough with a tale of two Vietnam vets searching for the men who saved them five decades ago. Premiering Tuesday, Nov. 13 (check local listings), the opener of the nine-episode sophomore round of this series that brings together people whose lives intersected at pivotal moments in history, introduces viewers to Dave Johnson, a U.S. Army colonel seeking the helicopter pilot who risked his own life to save Dave after a crash in Cambodia; and Roger Wagner, an Army finance clerk who looks to reunite with the surgeon who saved his leg after he was hit by enemy fire. Curry, who with her team helped affect the reunions, says she’s honored and sometimes a little embarrassed when people come to her with details of their most intense and often traumatic experiences. “One of those men has been to Vietnam three times ... . This is Dave,” Curry says. “And you’re sitting and you’re talking to this guy and you’re trying to get him to talk to you about what his experience was like. “And then he gives it up for you,” she continues, “and then he tells you in a way that you would never get from a history book, you’d never get otherwise what it really was like walking through the jungle and trying to keep your men alive.
LEO You should thoroughly mull over even the smallest decisions you’re faced with, even if others are pressuring you to hurry along. Your intuition will guide you towards the correct answers, and your patience will beget solutions.
VIRGO
And then this moment that happens. In all these stories there are these moments that happen and they’re live-or-die moments, not always physically die but emotionally die because of the pain of the moments.” And that’s where Curry must walk a fine line as an interviewer, as she must get her subject to talk but she must also be mindful of causing further pain. “These guys still have nightmares, so that is a heavy responsibility,” she says. “When you’re interviewing somebody telling you about a traumatic event that they don’t want to remember – they don’t want to go there, they don’t want to talk about it – there’s a responsibility not to cause any damage, any further damage. But on the other hand, giving them an ear so that they can actually tell someone they barely know something and maybe never see that person again, maybe that’s also a benefit. So the question is, when you go in, where are they on that spectrum?” Other stories in Season 2 include Holocaust survivors searching for those who gave them hope in the darkest days; people whose lives crossed after the devastating 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens; reunions of people separated after the Vietnam War and during World War II; and survivors of the great Alaska earthquake of 1964.
You’ll need to spend plenty of time preparing for a negotiation so that it turns out favourably for you. You’ll succeed at finding miraculous solutions to all your financial problems or to obtaining your dream job.
LIBRA After having carefully calculated what you’re able to spend, you’ll update your wardrobe with clothes from the best shops. You’ll go to extra trouble with your appearance so that you can fill more important roles at your place of work.
SCORPIO It won’t always be easy to get out of the house. However, you might be able to do part of your job from the comfort of your own home and in doing so, double your efficiency. You’ll also undertake a big household cleaning.
SAGITTARIUS Some confusion might arise between you and a family member. Set the record straight sooner rather than later. Drawing out the process is in no one’s best interest, and it’s essential that there’s no doubt as to who’s making the decisions. Otherwise, you won’t see the light at the end of the tunnel.
CAPRICORN You’ll receive an unexpected promotion — perhaps following the departure of one of your co-workers. There will be nothing stopping you from sitting in for the boss while he or she is away on vacation. In any case, you’ll get a salary raise.
AQUARIUS The conditions are ripe for quickly resolving a bunch of your concerns. At your job, a sudden flash of inspiration will guide you in your projects and make it possible for you to accomplish your goals.
PISCES Rejuvenate your body and mind adequately and you’ll manage to improve your standing in all domains of your life. Inspiration will help you bring about the transformation necessary for your well-being and will make you more open to a deeper spirituality.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,

Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Ryan Gosling’s Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN “Blade Runner 2049” (2017): An excellent choice to carry forerunner Harrison Ford’s weathered weariness forward, Gosling succeeds greatly – in part, opposite Ford himself – in this 35-years-later fantasy-mystery sequel. “La La Land” (2016): Gosling was an Oscar nominee again for “First Man” director Damien Chazelle’s tribute to the Hollywood musical, mirrored by the relationship of a lovestruck couple. “The Big Short” (2015): In an Oscarwinning screenplay, Gosling portrays an investor trying to take advantage of the U.S. housing market’s fates and fortunes in the mid-2000s. “The Place Beyond the Pines” (2012): Reteaming with filmmaker Derek Cianfrance, Gosling is memorable as a stunt cyclist whose path crosses unfortunately with a rookie policeman (Bradley Cooper). “Crazy Stupid Love” (2011): Humor is also in Gosling’s wheelhouse as he plays a committed bachelor in this seriocomic tale from pivotal members of the “This Is Us” creative team. “Blue Valentine” (2010): Gosling and Michelle Williams are powerfully effective as a troubled couple in director and co-writer Cianfrance’s drama. “Lars and the Real Girl” (2007): It’s no small thing to make a relationship with a life-size doll convincing to viewers, and Gosling achieved it. “Half Nelson” (2006): Gosling was an Oscar nominee as a teacher whose drug habit is discovered by one of his students. “The Notebook” (2004): In one of the most popular romantic dramas to date, Gosling and Rachel McAdams are hugely effective as socially diverse young lovers in the 1930s. “Murder by Numbers” (2002): Within a rather conventional context, Gosling makes his presence known as one of two clever students trying to befuddle a police detective (Sandra Bullock) by staging the perfect murder.

Drama recalls Neil Armstrong, ‘First Man’ to walk on the moon Movies have made sure that we remember the achievements of the U.S. space program, thanks to such films as “Apollo 13” and “The Right Stuff.” As the title suggests, “First Man” concentrates on one astronaut – and in particular, the accomplishment that made sure he would be a part of history forever: Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the moon. The picture reteams Ryan Gosling and director Damien Chazelle after the huge success they had with “La La Land,” and they proved to be as skilled as partners in this genre as they were in a musical. What’s especially impressive here are the flight sequences, which are as realistic as any have been on the screen ... and that even Sissy Spacek and accounts for the things that seem to Redford go Robert wrong, though known fact has established that Armstrong survived all his missions. (It probably goes without saying that, given the dimensions of space capsules and simulators, claustrophobes may want to avoid this film.)
Ryan Gosling
Those hair-raising moments are the highlights of “First Man,” but Gosling also is very credible in the quieter biographical scenes, playing Armstrong who wasn’t always entirely comfortable in the spotlight if at all. The actor’s quiet, edgy intensity works quite well for him here – and if you look at footage of the actual Armstrong, you see that their public images match up favorably. The impression is that a lot of deep stuff is running beneath those supposedly still waters. And for Armstrong, it was, particularly in family terms. Personal tragedy made him painfully aware of the fragility of life, and recent Emmy winner Claire Foy (“The Crown”) also is fine in “First Man” as the spaceman’s wife, who shares the fears of those married to others in dangerous occupations – especially since she knew that in its early stages, NASA literally was flying by the seat of its pants. The busy-ness of the space administration during missions is another element of “First Man” that Chazelle gets right. The energy and the anxiety of officials and technicians are conveyed appropriately, to the degree where strange terminology should feel to most viewers like a second, naturally acquired language. Though it’s ultimately unable to resist the temptation to be a touch on the lengthy side, “First Man” is everything you could want it to be for the story it tells, and from several angles. It’s absolutely worth a trip to the theater, if not necessarily to the cosmos.
Homegrown benefits Sounds of Grace
PHOTOS BY CHRIS MOORE / THE SUMTER ITEM On Thursday, Palmetto Health Tuomey presented Homegrown at the Sumter Opera House. The event, a fundraiser for The Sounds of Grace music ministry, featured local musicians who performed a wide variety of music to benefit the nonprofit organization that “seeks to provide peace and healing through music” to those in need of comfort. The concert also honored the memory of Lexie Kinder, who benefited from the music ministry. Kipper Ackerman, harpist and vocalist who founded the ministry, says its mission is to bring peace and healing by placing musicians in classrooms and hospitals for those with special needs, as well as in other settings where comfort is needed.
