Week of December 16 to 22, 2018 ARIES You’ll have a hard time sticking to a budget when it comes to your Christmas shopping. You’ll want to give your loved ones gifts that are more expensive than you planned. You may find yourself being more generous with some people than others.
TAURUS At this time of year, you may find yourself being spread too thin financially. Prioritize your spending this week. You may have to choose between Christmas gifts, social events or a family vacation.

‘Timeless’ ends it’s time with two-hour NBC finale Sakina Jaffrey (left) and Abigail Spencer
Thanks in large part to its fans, “Timeless” has been given the time – two hours, to be exact – to wrap things up. Effectively, the NBC fantasy-drama about time travelers played by Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter and Malcolm Barrett was saved by very vocal devotees twice: first when it got a second season after having been canceled, and now for earning a finale to tie up its loose ends. Airing Thursday, Dec. 20, that last story resolves the fate of the supposedly deceased Rufus Carlin (Barrett) and also integrates a Christmas theme ... which executive producers Shawn Ryan and Eric Kripke and their team could plan for, courtesy of the scheduling. “We wrapped at 5 a.m. on a Saturday,” says the pleasant Spencer, alias the show’s history-inclined Lucy Preston, “and we had a blast! It was kind of like cheating death twice, so this felt like borrowed time. And it was so significant, because it was such a mirror to what the characters were going through on the show. Our approach to this last time was, ‘Let’s just enjoy it.’ “We know how much our fans love the show,” Spencer adds, “so when you’re doing it for the fans wholeheartedly, you laugh and sing songs and dance. We got to have this last hurrah – as far as we know – and it was really, really great.” Spencer notes that co-star Lanter “made a big deal out of” her final scene, “screaming and hollering.
Even if the festivities haven’t officially started, your home will already be full of people. If you have young children, expect them to set up camp with their friends before the holidays start.
CANCER You’ll let yourself get carried away by the magic of Christmas, even if you didn’t plan on it. You’ll spend your time and energy on social causes that are important to you and you’ll spread cheer to people who need it most.
LEO
BY JAY BOBBIN And we were freezing, because we were out in the cold.” Barrett shot his last “Timeless” scene a day earlier, and Spencer admits she “burst into tears” at that. “Even at the table read, I started crying. It was such a hard show to make, and I feel like we were putting good in the world with all of the historical components ... and all of the women and minorities who were at the forefront of story lines that we were able to put on network television.” Pleased that her son has enjoyed watching “Timeless,” Spencer is getting back into a series groove rather quickly. After also working on shows from “Mad Men” and “Rectify” to “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Suits,” she’ll soon appear in the YouTube action-comedy “Wayne,” playing someone she terms “a drug-addict, beauty-queen, Boston-based wreck of a woman.” She also stars in the Hulu revenge-story pilot “Reprisal.” Still, Spencer knows she’ll retain “Timeless” as a special experience, for numerous reasons. “It really affected me,” she confirms. “We told 30 different historical stories and went on 30 different adventures ... and what a feat. There’s really a sense of pride, and I hope the fans like the finale. It really is for them.”
Let yourself be swept into the holiday spirit. You’ll be surrounded by big groups of people all week. You’ll finish your Christmas shopping at a crowded mall, and you’ll have a great time. Enjoy the craziness of the season.
VIRGO You’ll want more this week. You’re craving adventure and new experiences, so you’ll start thinking about a trip to the tropics. You may even start to look into opportunities for working abroad.
LIBRA Going back to school may be just what you need to advance your career. You’ll be presented with an opportunity that can make you a lot of money, which will make your financial situation easier.
SCORPIO Re-evaluate who you keep in your circle of friends, and concentrate on your partner and family. Don’t waste your time on people who drain your energy or create drama in your life.
SAGITTARIUS Just as they do every year, the people closest to you will expect you to plan all the holiday celebrations. Don’t be afraid to delegate tasks to other people and give yourself a break.
CAPRICORN You’ll start to wrap your Christmas gifts. Take the time to infuse a little bit of magic to spoil your loved ones and children. You’ll impress a lot of people this year.
AQUARIUS A special project will make you the centre of attention this week. Maybe you’re planning a spontaneous trip for your family or a big event to celebrate the holidays.
PISCES You’ll receive many invitations from friends for different activities, but you’ll feel like staying home. At the last minute you’ll change your mind and you’ll be happy you did.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Mark Wahlberg’s Top 10 BYMovies JAY BOBBIN “Lone Survivor” (2013): Wahlberg does effectively intense work as Marcus Luttrell, the real-life survivor who made it out alive after a military mission against the Taliban went awry. “Ted” (2012): Wahlberg. Foul-mouthed teddy bear. Seth MacFarlane creation. ‘Nuff said.
“The Fighter” (2010): Wahlberg’s determination as a producer got this true story of a boxer (played by Wahlberg) and his half brother (Christian Bale) made. “The Departed” (2006): An Oscarnominated Wahlberg is superb as a Boston policeman helping an undercover comrade (Leonardo DiCaprio) try to get the goods on a mobster (Jack Nicholson). “The Italian Job” (2003): This fast-paced update of a robbery caper, with Wahlberg as a betrayed conspirator looking to get even, has a memorable getaway sequence involving Mini cars. “Rock Star” (2001): Wahlberg makes a great transformation as a member of a tribute band enlisted to become the lead singer of the real group. “The Perfect Storm” (2000): The true story of a fishing boat crew’s battle against nature finds much of its heart in the love story of the characters played by Wahlberg and Diane Lane. “Three Kings” (1999): Several soldiers, one of them played by Wahlberg, devise a gold heist in the immediate aftermath of the Persian Gulf War. “Boogie Nights” (1997): The acting breakthrough for Wahlberg came with his performance as Dirk Diggler, porn movie star. “Fear” (1996): Wahlberg made a big impression as the obsessive suitor of a teen (Reese Witherspoon) whose eventual rejection of him sets her family up for danger.

Mark Wahlberg starts an ‘Instant Family’ It’s always nice to get what’s known as a “feel-good movie” during the holiday season, and “Instant Family” certainly is that. Its plot may have you thinking you’ll know exactly what’s coming – and you will, but it’s still very agreeable. Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne play a house-flipping couple who fear they’ve waited too long to become parents, so they try to catch up fast by adopting not one child but three ... siblings (portrayed by Isabella Moner, Gustavo Quiroz and Julianna Gamiz) who are old enough to be set in their ways, giving their new mom and dad big challenges in trying to put their own stamp on raising the kids. “Instant Family” was directed and co-written by Sean Anders, who also worked with Wahlberg on the “Daddy’s Home” comedies. (Both are among the producers here as well.) Anders is an adoptive parent himself, and the movie does indeed feel like it comes from someone who knows what he’s talking about, certainly in the scenes that feature Octavia Spencer and Tig Notaro as adoption-agency operators. There’s also a sense of authenticity in the moments at home, as the adults and the youngsters alike try to figure out their place with each other. They’re savvy in their own ways, but when they’re in juxtaposition, they’re fish out of water. Where “Instant Family” is smart is in not depicting the Wahlberg and Byrne characters as sitcom-like bumblers; yes, they err, but they’re still real and relatable. That works particularly well for Wahlberg, who’s intentionally been all over the map with his screen work, playing serious parts as well as virtual caricatures. Here, he hits somewhere in the middle of that range, leaning toward the more grounded end. Byrne has had a similar performance path over the course of her roles, and she proves a good match for him. It’s also hard to complain about a picture that makes solid use of the gifts of Margo Martindale (“The Americans”) and Julie Hagerty (“Airplane!”), both cast as in-laws. Michael O’Keefe and Joan Cusack are among other familiar and welcome faces in the supporting cast. The film does take some predictable turns – for instance, the kids’ biological mother isn’t completely out of the picture – but it’s so generally enjoyable in its approach and its performances, “Instant Family” is like a newly met relative you hit Rose Byrne and Mark Wahlberg it off with right away. And that’s a good thing.
“A SIMPLE FAVOR”
Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively
12 • The Sumter Scene • December 16 - 22, 2018
Jamie Lee Curtis
When so many movies don’t have a solid leading role for one actress, it’s interesting to see a film that offers two. This one does that, with Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively teamed by director Paul Feig (“Bridesmaids”) ... but here, he’s working in suspense more than comedy. Kendrick plays a video-blogging widow and mom who meets – and is dazzled by – the stylish Lively, both having children who go to the same Connecticut school. They become fast friends, leaving Kendrick puzzled and dismayed when Lively suddenly disappears. Of course, she’s determined to find out why. Henry Golding (“Crazy Rich Asians”) and Andrew Rannells (“Girls”) also are present, but the picture clearly belongs to the women, who appear to have a great time with it and with each other. DVD extras: six “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by cast and crew members; deleted scenes; outtakes. ››› (R: AS, N, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS
“THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS” Adapted from John Bellairs’ book by Eric Kripke (“Timeless,” “Supernatural”) and directed by Eli Roth (“Hostel”), this fantasy casts young Owen Vaccaro as an orphan who teams with a warlock and a witch (Jack Black, Cate Blanchett) to find – and to find the meaning of – a clock that his parents hid while they were alive. Otherworldly elements have a very big place in the story, letting the picture’s special effects team have a field day. Roth gives himself an acting part here, and Kyle MacLachlan and Tony Awardwinning “Hamilton” alum Renee Elise Goldsberry also are featured. ››› (PG: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
“THE SINNER: SEASON TWO” Jessica Biel stayed on board for the sophomore round of the USA Network melodrama as an executive producer – with much of the heavy lifting acting-wise remaining with Bill Pullman, who returns as Detective Harry Ambrose. The sleuth is drawn into the probe of another shocking, seemingly inexplicable crime after an 11-year-old (Elisha Heni) kills his parents. The investigation takes Ambrose back to his rural New York hometown, where an old friend (Tracy Letts) and a mystery woman (Carrie Coon) factor into the case. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V)
“LITTLE WOMEN” Louisa May Alcott’s classic story of the March sisters has gotten all sorts of screen retellings over the years, but this is an especially fruitful time for it, given a recent PBS/BBC television version and another movie edition currently in production with Meryl Streep, Laura Dern and Emma Watson. This spin on the tale gives it a modern sheen, with Lea Thompson as Marmee and Sarah Davenport, Allie Jennings, Melanie Stone and Taylor Murphy as her emotionally close daughters. The project was released to commemorate the 150th anniversary of “Little Women’s” original publication. ››› (PG-13: AS)

Celebrate Christmas at Brick Church on Dec. 16
Congregation invites public to Lessons and Carols 14 • The Sumter Scene • December 16 - 22, 2018
The congregation of Salem Black River Presbyterian Church invites the public to attend its Christmas service at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16. Church organist William Scobee, who is also choir director and organist for St. James Lutheran Church in Sumter, will direct the St. James choir and friends in a service of Lessons and Carols. Carols will alternate with readings from the Bible. The historic church is undergoing some renovations in order to preserve it for many more years, but Martha Greenway, member of the Session and church treasurer, said, “Although the interior looks pretty rough, I’m sure the Christmas spirit will prevail!” She said the plaster walls and ceilings have had the paint sanded off, so that the congregation can decide what steps should be taken next to deal with a moisture concern. None of this should interfere with the service or the acoustics in the sanctuary. Among the carols on the program will be “Praise Ye the Lord of Hosts,” from Camille Saint-Sa ns’ Christmas Oratorio; “O Come, Divine Messiah!,” arranged by Hal Hopson; Charles McCartha’s arrangement of “The King Shall Come When Morning Dawns,” with accompaniment by Michael Baier on cello; “What Can I Give Him?” with text by Christina Rossetti and music by Timothy Sharp; and “Glory to God in the Highest” by G.B. Pergolesi and Philip W.J. Stopford. Scobee said, “The congregation and choir will sing together the carols ‘Once in Royal David’s City,’ ‘Silent Night’ and ‘O Come All Ye Faithful.’ (These) beloved carols of the season will be augmented by soprano descants by Philip Stopford and Mark Andrews.” The Christmas service will be led by the Rev. David Cozad, now retired and living in Montreat, North Carolina, with his wife, Dana. A graduate of Eckerd College, he also holds a Master of Science in Planning degree in Urban Planning and Social Policy from Florida State University, a Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Columbia Seminary in Atlanta, with an emphasis in Stewardship. Cozad is Pastor Emeritus of First Presbyterian Church of Aiken, from which he retired in 2012. In 2014, he came out of retirement temporarily to serve for two years as senior pastor and head of staff at Shandon Presbyterian Church in Columbia and then for another two years in the same position at Central Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. Salem Black River Presbyterian Church, also known as Brick Church, was built in the Greek Revival style in 1846 and has stood as a noted example of the architectural style since, although the architect, if there was one, is unknown. Scobee noted that “the early settlers and their descendants were refined, educated folk, who had at their disposal classical knowledge of architecture and the wherewithal to employ a capable builder.” Brick Church was built by J. Lomas & Co. of Columbia for $5,620 using locally produced clay bricks. The public is invited to attend the 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, service of Lessons and Carols at Salem Black River Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow in the Meeting House. The church is on S.C. 527 about 2 miles east of U.S. 378.
