Convicts may be ‘Proven Innocent’ in new Fox law drama Its drama may be enhanced, but a new law series has a very real basis. Premiering Friday, Feb. 15, Fox’s “Proven Innocent” casts Rachelle Lefevre (“Under the Dome”) as a defense attorney with a vested interest in overturning wrongful convictions. She was a victim of one herself, sent to prison along with her brother (played by Riley Smith) in a media-sensation murder case. After a decade, she was freed by her current legal partner (Russell Hornsby, “Grimm”), but the prosecutor who had her sentenced (multiple Emmy winner Kelsey Grammer) still wants her incarcerated. Noting the existence of The Innocence Project, which uses DNA evidence to pursue exonerations, executive producer Danny Strong says “Proven Innocent” doesn’t depict situations “exactly as they happened in real life, but we’ll definitely have cases that are inspired by true-life cases, and then we’ll have cases that are also fictionalized. It’s an incredible number of wrongful convictions that exist in this country, so there’s this massive pool of true-life cases for us to pull from for inspiration.” “Frasier” veteran Grammer was cast after the “Proven Innocent” pilot was filmed. “It seemed like an interesting world for me to play around in,” he explains, “and maybe play an active role in starting the show up.” Grammer has had his own experiences with the justice system –
VIRGO
You’ll achieve a success of such a magnitude at work that your bosses will have no choice but to offer you a raise in order to retain your valuable services. You’ll feel proud of yourself.
LIBRA
Rachelle Lefevre and Kelsey Grammer
encompassing the loss of his younger sister – but he maintains, “I didn’t really think about anything other than the fact that I think (the series is) playable, and something I would like to play.” Fellow “Proven Innocent” star Lefevre admits to already having been a Grammer fan (“I’m not going to pretend that I’m not”) before she worked with him, but she adds, “I have had the good fortune of loving pretty much all of the actors I’ve worked with. When you are spending 15 hours a day on set, that’s not a job ... that’s a life, right? “We live together, so a lot of the time, I find myself in situations where I’m doing a scene with someone where we’re completely at odds. And this is somebody who (in real life) I had dinner with last night, or was holding me while I was crying because I was so tired, or whatever it is. It’s just a shift that you make, and I’m prepared to make it whenever the job requires.” “Presumed Innocent” creator and executive producer David Elliot reasons that “innocence is just a fascinating prism” for storytelling in the legal arena, “because whether you’re for or against capital punishment, presumably every person in the country is against killing someone who is innocent. I think it’s a fascinating place to start the dialogue about other issues.”
Faced with existential questions, you’ll look to introduce some big changes into your life so as to improve your outlook. In your relationship with your partner, the question of commitment will come to the forefront.
SCORPIO
You’ll be in a position to create a truce following a conflict within your group of friends. You’ll need to intervene rapidly, which will de monstrate your capacity for wisdom.
SAGITTARIUS
It’s going to be a stimulating week for you at your job. However, don’t inflate your expectations. Your success will be in direct proportion to the work you put in. Some tension might arise between you and one or more co-workers.
CAPRICORN
You’re going to be the centre of attention. Expect to receive some applause for your impressive achievements. This circumstance will raise your self-esteem.
AQUARIUS
You might spend a day at home puttering around, possibly waiting for a delivery. This circumstance might bring you to change the decor in certain rooms of your house.
PISCES
If you’re going to be behind the wheel, ensure that you have the correct directions; otherwise you’ll lose a bunch of time trying to find your destination. A map or a GPS will prove useful in this circumstance.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January 29 and addressed to Mueller

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Keanu Reeves’ Top 10 BYMovies JAY BOBBIN “Knock Knock” (2015): A real change of pace for Reeves, this drama of an on-his-own family man who makes the mistake of opening his door to strangers is completely harrowing. “John Wick” (2014): Reeves is effectively moody as a former hit man who dusts off his skills to seek revenge against those who viciously attacked him. “Something’s Gotta Give” (2003): Reeves rises to the occasion opposite some old pros, playing a young doctor who becomes Jack Nicholson’s unlikely romantic rival for Diane Keaton. “The Matrix” (1999): One of the blockbusters in Reeves’ career thus far, the filmmaking Wachowskis’ hugely original fantasy makes his character the hero of an alternate, high-tech world. “The Devil’s Advocate” (1997): Just for enduring Al Pacino’s nonstop homestretch yelling, Reeves deserves credit for this melodrama about an attorney who discovers his boss’ true identity. “Speed” (1994): Here’s the other Reeves blockbuster, a smartly plotted thriller that sets up his L.A. cop against a vengeful bomber (Dennis Hopper) whose device will destroy a passenger-packed bus if it goes slower than 50 mph. “My Own Private Idaho” (1991): Reeves and River Phoenix are solidly intense as male hustlers. “Point Break” (1991): Reeves is perfect as an athlete-turned-FBI agent sent to infiltrate the gang of a bank-robbing surfer (Patrick Swayze). “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” (1989): You may not expect to find this goofy comedy on the list, but Reeves and Alex Winter are downright iconic as the dim-bulb time travelers. “River’s Edge” (1986): Several talents including Reeves, Crispin Glover and Ione Skye were launched by this drama of murder among friends.

Keanu Reeves is still the real deal in ‘Replicas’ Keanu Reeves certainly has kept himself in the game, especially since redefining himself as an action star in “Point Break” and “Speed.” Lately, his “John Wick” movies have done much to keep his career strong, but you have to appreciate that he’s still willing to change things up ... even if the results aren’t completely successful. He did that a few years ago with the thriller “Knock Knock,” and now he tries it again with “Replicas,” about a scientist who has found a way to transfer deceased people’s minds into physical clones of them. Sure, that might sound like a big reach on the surface, but take a look at science

and technology headlines on any given day. Soon, and maybe sooner than we think, it might not seem such a wild idea. The efforts by Reeves’ alter ego become even more driven after a car accident claims his wife and three children, but there’s a big decision he has to make: He only has the tools to preserve three of the four. “Replicas” doesn’t play that dilemma through as fully as it might, but it still gives Reeves the means to portray real agony, and it’s much to his credit that he “sells” it. It’s easy to take pokes at a story like “Replicas,” since it basically positions itself as a modern take on “Frankenstein” and other such life-generating or -regenerating fantasies. It’s a somewhat bold move to make that attempt, and a big challenge to try to carry it through to a similar impact – especially in adding contemporary aspects to the theme, by necessity. Under the direction of television veteran Jeffrey Nachmanoff (“Homeland,” “Chicago Fire”), Reeves and a cast that also includes Alice Eve (as the deceased-then-revived wife), Thomas Middleditch and John Ortiz give it their best shots. Keeping performances grounded while dealing with a somewhat fantastic plot is a task for any movie of this sort, and the basic realism Reeves brings with him can’t – or at least shouldn’t – be underestimated. “The Matrix” certainly is another example, and as the captain of this team, he does what’s expected. Even if “Replicas” ultimately doesn’t hold up all the way to the finish line, it still lets Keanu Reeves reaffirm he’s a true movie star ... not a replica of one.

“BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY” Rami Malek’s (“Mr. Robot”) dynamic, thoroughly committed performance as lead singer Freddie Mercury – recently honored with a Golden Globe Award, as was the overall film – clearly is the strongest suit of this profile of the rock band Queen, now up for five Oscars including best picture and actor. The Anthony McCarten screenplay adds new flavor to the traditional rise-and-falland-rise-again premise of dramas about music acts, largely by focusing strongly and logically on Mercury, whose personal life ended up having meaning far beyond his inner circle of friends and associates. Credit goes to Dexter Fletcher, who finished the movie after original director Bryan Singer was removed from it, for holding the result together. The cast also includes Lucy Boynton, Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy, Joseph Mazzello, Aidan Gillen and (in a smart turn as a record producer) Mike Myers. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) 12 • The Sumter Scene • February 10 - 16, 2019

Hugh Jackman followed his success in “The Greatest Showman” by starring in director and coscreenwriter Jason Reitman’s (“Juno”) profile of Sen. Gary Hart, whose presidential aspirations basically were demolished by the revelation of his extramarital affair with Donna Rice (played by Sara Paxton) – one of the biggest scandals in the history of American politics up to that time. Also in the impressive cast are Reitman’s “Up in the Air” alums Vera Farmiga and J.K. Simmons, as well as Alfred Molina, Ari Graynor (“I’m Dying Up Here”), John Bedford Lloyd, Mike Judge, Kevin Pollak and two veterans of the series “Last Man Standing,” Kaitlyn Dever and Molly Ephraim. Matt Bai, whose book “All the Truth Is Out: The Week Politics Went Tabloid” inspired the film, also worked on the screenplay. DVD extras: “making-of” documentary; audio commentary by filmmakers including Reitman; deleted scenes. ››› (R: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
“NOBODY’S FOOL” With her star generally on the rise in the comedy world in the last couple of years, Tiffany Haddish got a big nod from Tyler Perry by landing the central role in his tale of an ex-convict taken in by her sister (Tika Sumpter) after her release. She then tries to protect her sibling from an online suitor whose actual existence becomes highly suspect. Director Perry’s script gives Haddish plentiful chances to play drama as well as humor, and he typically casts very well around her ... with Omari Hardwick, Whoopi Goldberg, Missi Pyle, Mehcad Brooks (“Supergirl”) and Amber Riley (“Glee”) also featured. ››› (R: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
“THE HAPPY PRINCE” Oscar Wilde’s name has long been legendary, but the man behind it comes into very sharp focus as Rupert Everett serves as star, writer and – in his first time in the job – director of this dramatization of the celebrated and controversial author’s final days, spent in Paris. With a title borrowed from one of Wilde’s stories, the film traces his relationships with various people as he tries to come to terms with them in the fleeting time he has left. Colin Firth, Colin Morgan, Emily Watson and Tom Wilkinson are among the actors working with and for Everett here. DVD extras: “making-of” documentary; deleted scenes; Q&A with Everett. ››› (R: AS, N, P)
“AMERICAN VANDAL: SEASON ONE” With the Funny or Die outlet among its producers, this Netflix series spoofs true-crime shows – such as the streaming service’s own “Making a Murderer” – as it investigates a high-school prank. Here, the crime in question is the damage done to faculty members’ cars, but some others don’t believe the student pegged as the prime suspect actually is responsible. The cast purposely is made up of relative unknowns, though Griffin Gluck has co-starred in such shows as “Back in the Game” and “Red Band Society,” and Lifetime viewers may recognize Saxon Sharbino from the oft-repeated movie “Stalker’s Prey.” This series did get a second season revolving around a different “crime.” ››› (Not rated: AS, P)
“THE KEY TO REBECCA” It’s heartening to see home-video companies still going back to release TV movies and miniseries from the era when such projects were frequent, and this is another example of one of the better ones. The adaptation of Ken Follett’s novel casts veteran actor Cliff Robertson as a British military man who pursues a German spy (“Starsky and Hutch” alum David Soul, clearly stretching himself to achieve the role’s demands). The chased agent tries to steer the course of World War II by secretly plotting to facilitate the taking of Egypt by “Desert Fox” General Erwin Rommel (who’s portrayed by Robert Culp, of “I Spy” fame). The 1985 drama also stars Season Hubley, Anthony Quayle and David Hemmings (who directed the project as well). ››› (Not rated: AS, V)
