Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser revisit ‘Mad About You’ BY JAY BOBBIN

It’s taken quite a while, but finally, Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt are “Mad About You” again. After several false starts, the 1992-99 comedy series about spouses Paul and Jamie Buchman returns with new episodes as the Spectrum cable system – which has been offering the original show to subscribers – debuts the first of two batches of six fresh stories Wednesday, Nov. 20. Empty-nest syndrome is a major theme as the Buchmans see daughter Mabel (played by Abby Quinn) start college, leaving the couple facing their next chapter. “Any number of times when we were ready to go, it was like, ‘Let’s just forget it, this seems too complicated,” reflects Reiser, who created the show with Danny Jacobson. “There were all the logistics and legalities, but the one cookie was, ‘Yeah, but when we get to play, it’s gonna be fun.’ And I was happy to see that was what happened.” A four-time Emmy winner for “Mad About You,” Hunt also directed the revival’s premiere. (Despite her car accident last month, Spectrum still plans to release the other six new stories – which were in production then – on Wednesday, Dec. 18.) “We just wanted to be sure there were stories that we would be excited about,” Hunt says. “They should be what our show was, which was that life is happening and these people are trying to continue to love each other through it.” After the first series’ last episode flashed forward 20-plus years, “Helen and I both were very averse to ever coming back,” Reiser notes. “To me, reunion shows were just an excuse for people at home

to go, ‘Gee, he let himself go. And look at her. She looks bad.’ Why do that? We also were very proud of how we ended the show; we literally checked every box, covered all the ground we wanted to, and landed the plane successfully. But all these reboots were in the air, and people started asking us about it.” Back for the revival as well are John Pankow (as Paul’s cousin Ira), Richard Kind (Buchman friend Mark) and Anne Ramsay (Jamie’s sister Lisa). The theme song – “Final Frontier,” composed by Reiser and Don Was – has been retained, too, now as a duet by Lyle Lovett and Kecia Lewis. Also an Oscar winner for “As Good As It Gets,” Hunt gives special credit to veteran writer-producer Peter Tolan (“The Larry Sanders Show”) for bringing “Mad About You’s” new round to fruition. An executive producer along with Reiser and Hunt, he’s been “the captain of the ship,” Hunt maintains. “He knows we have the show in our DNA, but he’s also brought his supersmart sense to it.”

You’ll need to show patience to a member of your family. You may start to take out the Christmas decorations and make your house sparkle like never before. The idea of moving could also come up. For work or personal reasons, you’ll be on the move this week. By taking the lead, you’ll be able to resolve a conflict that’s been going on for a long time. Avoid criticizing your partner for small mistakes.

CANCER

If your financial situation is pre carious, you should be able to find a way to resolve it success fully. You won’t be able to keep your thoughts to yourself this week, which could lead to a man agement position.

LEO

Your thoughts will be all over the place this week. You’ll also start different projects without neces sarily finishing them. You’ll also have many ideas for activities with friends. At work, a task will take more time than you thought.

VIRGO

Stress will completely drain your batteries this week. It’s important not just to rest, but also to take steps towards making consider able changes in your lifestyle. You’ll also begin a spiritual practice.

LIBRA

You’ll benefit from a very active social life. Even if you crave some solitude, there will always be some one to pull you out of your isola tion and make you smile. Allow changes to guide you instead of resisting them.

SCORPIO

You’ll probably be in charge of an event that will bring many people together. At work, you’ll suc ceed in combining business with pleasure and fun will dominate the office, making everyone more efficient.

SAGITTARIUS

Even with nothing planned, you’ll take a last minute trip. Try to stay focused on learning something new. At work, take the time to analyze even the smallest details.

CAPRICORN

Your emotions will dominate this week. The situation will force you to learn to let go and to deepen your spiritual awareness. In your relationship, remember to take the time to have some fun occasionally.

AQUARIUS

You’re not always patient with your partner. It would be a good idea to break out of the routine of your relationship and expe rience new adventures. Professio nally, you’ll have enough confi dence to make necessary changes.

PISCES

You’ll take charge of all the little emergencies that pop up around you. This situation will prove to be profitable at work. In your love life, small details will show the inten sity of your mutual feelings.

Some notable names return to ‘Zombieland’

If there’s going to be a sequel to “Zombieland” 10 years later, the Halloween period recently ended certainly is the season for it. Though “Zombieland: Double Tap” has a definite feel of “been there, done that” – not only thanks to its own forerunner, but also to numerous other tales of survivors fighting the undead – there’s fun in seeing such “A-list” stars as Oscar winner Emma Stone and Jesse Eisenberg being willing to return to the genre, considering how much else they’ve accomplished in vastly different kinds of projects during the past decade. Along with fellow returnees Woody Harrelson and Abigail Breslin, their situation remains just what it was. They’re certainly more experienced in vanquishing zombies, but they’re still crossing a ravaged America after finding temporary shelter in (of all places) the White House. As they take their quest back on the road, they encounter characters played Rosario Dawson and Zoey Deutch. The daughter of actress Lea Thompson and filmmaker Howard Deutch (“Pretty in Pink”), Deutch is especially good here, getting plenty of mileage out of applying what she’s established as her offbeat sensibility to the now-quitefamiliar scenario of a zombie invasion. Still, that’s not to dismiss others whose connection to “Zombieland” franchise has been long established. After

notable turns in “La La Land” and “The Favourite,” to name just two, Stone is marvelously game to play tough again as she takes on otherworldly opponents once more. Perhaps the distance doesn’t seem as great for Eisenberg and Harrelson, who frequently play characters on the edge, but they enjoyably keep their “Zombieland” mojo here. And Breslin carries with her the experience she’s gotten from being in other horror tales. One has to figure they all had a good time together the first time around, since reassembling a central cast in full after 10 years isn’t necessarily a simple proposition. To use Stone as an example, opportunities have to be plentiful for her, as her credits of recent times have borne out ... so for her to say “yes” to “Zombieland” again says a lot. The original director and writers also are back, which gives “Zombieland: Double Tap” a nice sense of continuity even after this long. Those who know the first film aren’t necessarily in for a lot of surprises here, but if you’re going to fight the undead, it doesn’t hurt to have familiar allies to do that with. “Zombieland: Double Tap”

and from there I give my creativity free rein.” Having confidence in the ability to create from a simple idea or vision is a stumbling block for many young designers, Chestnut said. “So many young designers are scared to go outside of the realm of the way people live and think,” he said. “They need to develop a confidence in their abilities.” Developing an artist’s confidence is what Chestnut strives to do with his Atlanta School of Floral Design. “I felt pushed to open a school where I can encourage young designers,” he said. “There are no manuals for creative people. They need to be open to the unknown. Creative people look at things differently than people who have formatted jobs where they do the same thing over and over.” Through his school, Chestnut said he gives new designers “timeless elements and techniques” that they can use in developing their own unique designs. “I give them an arsenal of techniques that they can go out and use to create timeless creations,” Chestnut said. “Then it’s their design. It’s something that is uniquely theirs and something that only they can do.” By giving young designers the techniques, Chestnut says he gives them the process needed to build their own signature designs so when someone looks at a creation, that person knows who the creative mind was that developed the design. Where does the inspiration come from to design the themes of an entire wedding, home or business? “Flowers and events are part of a person’s life,” Chestnut said. “One idea, one color, one thought, one desire can lead to the overall concept for an entire event, whether it’s a wedding and reception, a home designed for the holidays or a business. I’ve planned entire weddings, helped people choose everything for their new home from the colors on the walls to furniture and even the towels. People keep coming back. After I’ve planned a person’s wedding, they will come to me for their daughter’s wedding or their home for Christmas. They have complete confidence in me. They know that I will give them what they want, no

Orange Cranberry Biscotti By Jennifer with Bake or Break

Ingredients

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for shaping the dough) 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened 1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar

Stuffers

2 large eggs 2 teaspoons orange extract ¾ cup dried cranberries 2 tablespoons orange juice sanding sugar,40optional NOVEMBER2019 - JANUARY 2020 | LAKESIDE

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone liner. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt. Set aside. Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat the butter, sugar and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Mix in the extract and juice. Reduce the mixer speed to low. Gradually add the flour mixture, mixing just until combined. Transfer the dough to the prepared pan. Shape the dough into a rectangle about 3 ½ inches wide and ¾ inch tall. The dough will be a bit sticky, so dust your fingertips with a bit of flour if necessary to help you shape it. If desired, sprinkle with sanding sugar. Bake for 25 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes (or until it's cool enough to handle). Use the parchment paper or liner to transfer the biscotti to a cutting board. Cut the biscotti into ¾-inch crosswise slices.

love of music that was instilled at a young age from his father’s side of the family, along with a desire to create wonderful works of art using elements that were gathered while traipsing through the woods with his mother and grandmother, led to an incredible career as a sought-after interior and floral design master based in Atlanta. Born in Kingstree, Don Chestnut moved to Manning about age 19, and the slightly larger rural town became home. “I’ve always felt that Manning is my home,” Chestnut said. “All my memories from Manning are wonderful. I may have been born in Williamsburg County, but Manning is home.” Today, Chestnut resides in Atlanta. The large metropolitan city is not only home to Chestnut’s hugely successful interior and floral design businesses, but also to the Atlanta School of Floral Design, a school he founded to teach budding designers unique techniques to make a successful career out of their own creative designs. “My entire life has been creative,” Chestnut shared. “From my father’s side of the family, I got my love for music; and from my mother’s side of the family, I got my love for the arts and crafts. My grandmother and I would spend hours traipsing through the forests collecting things to make our arts and crafts.” As a teenager, Chestnut said he took a part-time job as the driver for a locally owned and operated florist delivering flowers, and it wasn’t long before his desire to work with all things botanical blossomed. Chestnut’s inspiration for his creations comes from everywhere -- his clients, his experiences, his students, his surroundings and even just driving from one place to another. On a recent trip from Manning back to Atlanta, Chestnut traveled past cotton fields, and immediately he began thinking of ways to use the cotton bolls to make wreaths and floral arrangements. “These days, I don’t do anything until I have a vision first,” he said. “I can sketch and draw three dimensionally. My creations start as a vision,

Sumter Scene “Dora and the Lost City of Gold”

from the couch

BY JAY BOBBIN

“THE KOMINSKY METHOD: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON” Veteran sitcom producer Chuck Lorre (“The Big Bang Theory,” “Mom”) has fared very well with his move into the streaming realm, since this Netflix series – which recently debuted its Season 2 – picked up a couple of Golden Globe Awards, as well as several Emmy nominations, for its first round. Michael Douglas plays a Hollywood acting coach still grappling with the disappointment of not having a substantial performing career of his own, while also trying to cope with his aging against the view of an industry that generally favors youth. The excellent Alan Arkin also stars as his agent, who shares his concerns over the changes that life brings, particularly in one’s later years. Nancy Travis and Sarah Baker are in the regular cast as well, with Jay Leno, Patti LaBelle and the late Eddie Money making guest appearances as themselves. Longtime Douglas pal Danny DeVito also turns up here. ››› (Not rated: AS, N, P) (Also on Blu-ray) “THE HANDMAID’S TALE: SEASON THREE” The most recent round of the acclaimed Hulu adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s novel earned Emmy Awards for recurring cast members Bradley Whitford (“Perfect Harmony”) and Cherry Jones (“24”). Their characters are among those potentially threatened as Gilead’s women mount a plan to strike back against their oppressors. Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) is among the leaders of that charge, while June (Elisabeth Moss) goes her own way, with an eye toward protecting the society’s children. Alexis Bledel, Joseph Fiennes, Ann Dowd and Samira Wiley are among the saga’s other continuing stars, with Christopher Meloni (“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”) and Elizabeth Reaser (“Twilight”) among cast additions. DVD extra: “making-of” documentary. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray) “BLINDED BY THE LIGHT” As the title might suggest, Bruce Springsteen’s music plays a key role in director Gurinder Chadha’s (“Bend It Like Beckham”) fact-inspired comedy-drama about a teenager (played Viveik Kalra) who becomes a poet to deal with the challenging times of the late-1980s England in which he lives. “DORA AND THE LOST CITY OF GOLD”

The popular animated character Dora the Explorer becomes a live-action heroine in this adventure, as played by Isabela Moner (“Instant Family”). Having grown up in the wilds with her parents, Dora has a tough time adjusting to the domesticity of high school ... until she leads some of her new classmates on a trek through the jungle to find her parents (Eva Longoria, Michael Pena), who vanished while seeking the title city – a quest that some treasure hunters with questionable ethics also are on. Temuera Morrison also appears, and the voices of Benicio Del Toro and Danny Trejo are heard. Expectedly, the movie division of Dora’s home network Nickelodeon had a hand in making the picture. DVD extras: four “making-of” documentaries; deleted and extended scenes; outtakes. ››› (PG: AS) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

he discovers the work of music’s “Boss” and gets additional inspiration – and courage – to express his own views, though he has to contend with some parental disapproval. “Badlands” and “Born to Run” are among the Springsteen cuts heard in addition to the title song, and popular tunes of the time by Tiffany and Human League also are on the soundtrack. Hayley Atwell (“Marvel’s Agent Carter”) also appears. DVD extra: “making-of” documentary. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “CATCH-22” Joseph Heller’s darkly comedic novel yielded a 1970 movie (starring the aforementioned Alan Arkin), but it was revisited recently by George Clooney, serving as an executive producer and a director as well as a star of this Hulu limited-series version. Clooney plays a World War II military superior, but the central role of Yossarian goes to Christopher Abbott (“First Man”), portraying a pilot stationed in the Mediterranean and caught in the dilemma indicated by the title – trying to get out of dangerous bombing missions by purporting to be insane, yet being considered too rational for that reasoning to be accepted and to cause his dismissal. Kyle Chandler, Hugh Laurie, Giancarlo Giannini and fellow executive producer and director (and longtime Clooney associate) Grant Heslov are among other notables in the cast. DVD extras: “making-of” documentary; deleted scenes; outtakes. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) “I AM EVIDENCE” Mariska Hargitay’s dedication to “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” and its viewers, took her in a related direction as a producer and the (briefly seen) host of this Emmy-winning HBO documentary. She focuses on a subject the drama has covered – the many untested kits submitted by rape victims – with directors Trish Adlesic and Geeta Gandbhir keeping the cameras largely on victims and medical and legal professionals who discuss the submission of such kits and their importance in the pursuit of prosecutions. Hargitay is making sure that the topic remains prominent on “L&O: SVU,” since her dialogue in the opening moments of a recent episode referenced it. ››› (Not rated: AS, P)
