Lauren Ambrose stars in “Servant,” which begins streaming Thursday on Apple TV+.

‘Servant’ Shyamalanʼs thumbprints all over addictive new Apple series

BY GEORGE DICKIE

Dorothy Turner is a woman in denial. Or so it seems. As played by Lauren Ambrose in the Apple TV+ thriller “Servant,” which begins streaming Thursday, Nov. 28, she’s a TV reporter who by all appearances has it all: a promising career, a chic downtown Philadelphia brownstone and a successful husband, Sean (Toby Kebbell, “Fantastic Four”), a chef, with whom she has an infant son, Jericho. To help with his care, the couple hire Leanne (Nell Tiger Free, “Game of Thrones”) as a nanny. The only trouble is Jericho is a therapy doll given to Dorothy after the real child died suddenly in his crib and the devastated woman came to accept it as the real thing. So, in fact, does Leanne, leaving Sean at wit’s end and causing him to lean on his brother-in-law Julian (Rupert Grint, the “Harry Potter” movies), who also knows the baby isn’t real, for counsel and a dose of sanity. Then one day, Sean hears cries through the baby monitor and goes upstairs to discover a live infant in Jericho’s crib. Which makes him (and the viewer) wonder: Did Leanne steal someone’s child and place it there or is something else afoot? Executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan (“The Sixth Sense”) and created and written by Tony Basgallop (“Outcast”), the half-hour series is full of ominous tones and the type of pay-attention-or-you’ll-miss-it clues that are hallmarks of Shyamalan productions and designed to keep one wondering who is alive and who is dead – which is one reason Ambrose, a two-time Emmy nominee for “Six Feet Under,” signed on. “You know, every word has meaning – or rather a better way to say it is nothing is casual,” she explains. “You know, the whole show is subtext. With all the things that are going on with these people and you don’t know who

Rupert Grint, Lauren Ambrose and Toby Kebbell (from left) star in “Servant,” which begins streaming Thursday on Apple TV+. knows what and who’s perceiving what from which direction, you know, everything is subtext. So that was kind of fun to play in and to have these cool and talented actors to work with.” Working with Shyamalan, with his famously painstaking attention to detail and his elaborate South Philadelphia studio warehouse, was also a draw for the actress. “I feel pretty honored, actually, to be the one to get to try to do this really challenging role,” she says, “where it’s this ambitious lady who’s facing this tragedy and this failure. She’s a person who maybe in her life never failed and she has this ultimate failure and it spurs this tragic character and she’s this deeply flawed character. And of course, she’s dealing with grief in such a strange way that I think is an interesting parable for how we all sort of deny our human experience. I guess those are the main things. I mean, meeting with Night is like, ‘Wow, this guy’s amazing and I really want to try this.’ ”

NOVEMBER 23 - NOVEMBER 29, 2019

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 24 TO 30, 2019 THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: AQUARIUS, PISCES AND ARIES

ARIES

If your family is spread out across the country, you’ll start to plan a tour in order to visit everyone over the holidays. If not, you’ll take a trip with those closest to you.

TAURUS

You’ll master the art of speaking and negotiation. At work or else where, you’ll succeed in reaching an agreement, notably for financ ing a particular project. You’ll do everything in your power to please a maximum number of people.

GEMINI

You’ll have a great success at work, especially if you’re in sales. You’ll build your customer base to the point that management will have no choice but to promote you. You’ll also be very skilled at dealing with small details.

CANCER

At work, it’s important that you present yourself impeccably in order to be a success. A sense of levity will also be appreciated by your bosses. In your love life, pas sion will give way to a more seri ous commitment.

LEO

There may be some minor family conflicts to resolve. Don’t hesitate to speak candidly, because silence carries the risk of causing turmoil. You might bring your work home some evenings.

VIRGO

You certainly won’t keep your thoughts to yourself and there will be somebody to debate with in all circumstances. At work, you’ll expand your clientele and make some new friends.

LIBRA

Check the pockets of your winter coat to find some money forgotten there last year. In your love life, you must communicate openly, if only to get the affection you desire.

SCORPIO

You’ll be very dynamic this week and start to organize the different activities you’ll participate in dur ing the coming weeks. You’ll be generous and present at all of your holiday celebrations this year.

SAGITTARIUS

They say that speech is silver but silence is golden. You’ll benefit from an extraordinary source of inspiration. The comfort of your home will allow you to create a work of art or to open yourself to a spiritual practice.

CAPRICORN

Friends are an important part of your life, and it’s time to clean up your social circle. You may also de velop friendships with colleagues after certain events.

AQUARIUS

It’s normal to let loose after a bril liant accomplishment or finishing a longterm project. You won’t have to wait too long before being asked to celebrate with friends and colleagues.

PISCES

You’ll have a great time and pro crastination will dominate every thing. It’s necessary to relax from time to time. Fortunately, you’ll work hard later on in order to avoid any type of delay.

Naomie Harris’ Top 10 Movies

THE SUMTER ITEM

MOVIE REVIEW

BY JAY BOBBIN

BY JAY BOBBIN

“Collateral Beauty” (2016): In this underrated drama, Harris is excellent as a therapy-group leader who has a big impact on a member (Will Smith) seeking the answers to some of life’s biggest questions. “Moonlight” (2016): Harris was an Oscar nominee for writer-director Barry Jenkins’ Academy Award-winning drama, playing a crack addict who has concerns other than her son (Ashton Sanders) – who falls under the influence of a drug dealer. “Our Kind of Traitor” (2016): A Russian mafia member

(Stellan Skarsgard) seeking asylum causes problems for a couple (played by Harris and Ewan McGregor) in this tense thriller.

“Southpaw” (2015): In this deeply emotional drama, Harris’ socialworker character facilitates a troubled boxer’s (Jake Gyllenhaal) separation from his daughter (Oona Laurence).

Naomie Harris elevates the action in ‘Black and Blue’

“Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” (2013): The role of South

African icon Winnie Mandela doesn’t go to just anyone, and Harris delivers the anticipated impact in this film of Nelson Mandela’s autobiography.

Naomie Harris has distinguished herself in a variety of projects, whether she’s playing Miss Eve Moneypenny to Daniel Craig’s James Bond or earning an Oscar nomination for the gritty “Moonlight.” She’s the kind of talent who takes such command of the screen, filmmakers know that she can shoulder the load when the script might not be up to the highest standard. That turns out to be the case with “Black and Blue,” which casts her as a military veteran turned New Orleans police rookie who catches a couple of other cops being less than legal – and her bodycam catches it, too, ensuring permanent evidence of the wrongdoing. And the bad Harris elevates the action in ‘Black and Blue’guys know it. That makes her a fugitive, since she’s not sure who she can trust ... except for a figure from her past played by Tyrese Gibson. Mike Colter (of the television series “Evil”) also factors in as a very angry drug kingpin, and even though the cop on the run is a native of the Big Easy, she finds that geographic loyalty is just about nil as most others leave her to her own inventions to survive. “Black and Blue” does have a certain kinetic energy as it follows the Harris charac-

“Skyfall” (2012): Right from the opening scene, Harris makes her presence known opposite Daniel Craig’s James Bond, but it isn’t until the end of the film that she makes her quick-witted and resourceful character’s identity fully known: Miss Eve Moneypenny. “Street Kings” (2008): As the wife of an ill-fated policeman (Terry Crews) skeptical about his former partner (Keanu Reeves), who ends up implicated in his murder, Harris has some telling moments. “Miami Vice” (2006): Harris nicely reinterprets Olivia Brown’s television role as Miami police detective Trudy Joplin in director Michael Mann’s big-screen version of his style-setting series. “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” (2006):

In her first of two turns in the Disney adventure franchise, Harris plays voodoo priestess Tia Dalma to the mystical hilt.

“28 Days Later ... ” (2002): Director Danny Boyle’s effective chiller gives Harris a solid role as one of the handful of survivors of a virus that has ravaged London and turned people into vicious, rampant assailants.

ter step by perilous step through her waking nightmare. That’s thanks also to director Deon Taylor, who notably showed his penchant for telling such tales with the Paula Patton-starring melodrama “Traffik,” which also offered a strong female heroine battling forces including corrupt law officers to survive. The tradition of movies about honest cops vs. dishonest peers is a long and notable one, encompassing such standout examples as “Serpico,” “Prince of the City” and “Training Day.” Some of them have been more cerebral than “Black and Blue” is meant to be, though the central figure gets ample opportunity to show how smart and resourceful she is. It certainly doesn’t hurt that she has a background as a soldier, which admittedly stacks the odds in her favor as she has to get inventive in outwitting her enemies. For any and all of its more clever elements, though, the picture also has a lot of genre cliches because of a screenplay that ultimately can’t avoid them. That’s a shame, but if you want to see how much one performer can elevate a movie almost entirely on her own, Naomie Harris offers a textbook example in “Black and Blue.”

and from there I give my creativity free rein.” Having confidence in the ability to create from a simple idea or vision is a stumbling block for many young designers, Chestnut said. “So many young designers are scared to go outside of the realm of the way people live and think,” he said. “They need to develop a confidence in their abilities.” Developing an artist’s confidence is what Chestnut strives to do with his Atlanta School of Floral Design. “I felt pushed to open a school where I can encourage young designers,” he said. “There are no manuals for creative people. They need to be open to the unknown. Creative people look at things differently than people who have formatted jobs where they do the same thing over and over.” Through his school, Chestnut said he gives new designers “timeless elements and techniques” that they can use in developing their own unique designs. “I give them an arsenal of techniques that they can go out and use to create timeless creations,” Chestnut said. “Then it’s their design. It’s something that is uniquely theirs and something that only they can do.” By giving young designers the techniques, Chestnut says he gives them the process needed to build their own signature designs so when someone looks at a creation, that person knows who the creative mind was that developed the design. Where does the inspiration come from to design the themes of an entire wedding, home or business? “Flowers and events are part of a person’s life,” Chestnut said. “One idea, one color, one thought, one desire can lead to the overall concept for an entire event, whether it’s a wedding and reception, a home designed for the holidays or a business. I’ve planned entire weddings, helped people choose everything for their new home from the colors on the walls to furniture and even the towels. People keep coming back. After I’ve planned a person’s wedding, they will come to me for their daughter’s wedding or their home for Christmas. They have complete confidence in me. Orange Cranberry Biscotti By Jennifer with Bake or Break

Ingredients

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for shaping the dough) 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened 1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar

Stuffers

2 large eggs 2 teaspoons orange extract ¾ cup dried cranberries 2 tablespoons orange juice sanding sugar,40optional NOVEMBER2019 - JANUARY 2020 | LAKESIDE

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone liner. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt. Set aside. Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat the butter, sugar and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Mix in the extract and juice. Reduce the mixer speed to low. Gradually add the flour mixture, mixing just until combined. Transfer the dough to the prepared pan. Shape the dough into a rectangle about 3 ½ inches wide and ¾ inch tall. The dough will be a bit sticky, so dust your fingertips with a bit of flour if necessary to help you shape it. If desired, sprinkle with sanding sugar. Bake for 25 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes (or until it's cool enough to handle). Use the parchment paper or liner to transfer the biscotti to a cutting board. Cut the biscotti into ¾-inch crosswise slices.

love of music that was instilled at a young age from his father’s side of the family, along with a desire to create wonderful works of art using elements that were gathered while traipsing through the woods with his mother and grandmother, led to an incredible career as a sought-after interior and floral design master based in Atlanta. Born in Kingstree, Don Chestnut moved to Manning about age 19, and the slightly larger rural town became home. “I’ve always felt that Manning is my home,” Chestnut said. “All my memories from Manning are wonderful. I may have been born in Williamsburg County, but Manning is home.” Today, Chestnut resides in Atlanta. The large metropolitan city is not only home to Chestnut’s hugely successful interior and floral design businesses, but also to the Atlanta School of Floral Design, a school he founded to teach budding designers unique techniques to make a successful career out of their own creative designs. “My entire life has been creative,” Chestnut shared. “From my father’s side of the family, I got my love for music; and from my mother’s side of the family, I got my love for the arts and crafts. My grandmother and I would spend hours traipsing through the forests collecting things to make our arts and crafts.” As a teenager, Chestnut said he took a part-time job as the driver for a locally owned and operated florist delivering flowers, and it wasn’t long before his desire to work with all things botanical blossomed. Chestnut’s inspiration for his creations comes from everywhere -- his clients, his experiences, his students, his surroundings and even just driving from one place to another. On a recent trip from Manning back to Atlanta, Chestnut traveled past cotton fields, and immediately he began thinking of ways to use the cotton bolls to make wreaths and floral arrangements. “These days, I don’t do anything until I have a vision first,” he said. “I can sketch and draw three dimensionally. My creations start as a vision,

View from the couch

BY JAY BOBBIN “DON’T LET GO”

Since it’s thematically similar to a movie turned television series called “Frequency,” in which a radio signal enabled someone to communicate across time with their late father, this melodrama may seem awfully familiar to some viewers. A detective (David Oyelowo, “Selma”) is grieving over the murders of several of his relatives, so imagine his surprise when he gets a cell-phone call from a person who apparently is his recently slain niece (Storm Reid, “A Wrinkle in Time”). If it’s really her, has time somehow bridged itself for the two of them? And can he prevent her from being killed again. That set-up leaves the potential for a lot of loopholes in the plot, so the best thing is to have good actors who sell the premise hard enough for the audience not to think much about those holes – and luckily, Oyelowo and Reid are two such performers, giving the tale from screenwriter-director Jacob Estes the level of urgency it needs. Mykelti Williamson and Brian Tyree Henry (“Atlanta”) also are featured. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

“MASTERPIECE: THE CHAPERONE”

Elizabeth McGovern already has a wide following among publictelevision viewers for her work on “Downton Abbey,” and she reunites with writer Julian Fellowes and director Michael Engler on this drama based on Laura Moriarty’s best seller, and released on home video in the same week it’s televised. The tale traces the relationship between then-celebrity -to-be Louise Brooks (played by Haley Lu Richardson, of “Split”) and the by-the-book society staple and family woman (McGovern) who accompanies her through a New York summer in the early 1920s. Despite the differences in their ages and backgrounds, the two women end up having a profound effect on each other. Victoria Hill (a producer of the project as well, as is McGovern), Campbell Scott, Blythe Danner and Miranda Otto also star. The movie launches a new Masterpiece Films division spun off from the long-running PBS anthology series. ››› (Not rated: AS)

“ANGEL HAS FALLEN”

The reason the original adventure in this franchise – “Olympus Has Fallen” – worked wasn’t just Gerard Butler as a Secret Service veteran, but his teamwork with Aaron Eckhart as the president he had to protect from White House-invading terrorists. “London Has Fallen” largely repeated the same plot overseas, and in this second sequel, it’s the Butler character who’s the suspected terrorist. He’s alleged to have launched a drone attack on the chief executive ... now played by Morgan Freeman, who’s gotten government job promotions from movie to movie in the series. You just know the accused man is going to go after the real perps, so this largely is an exercise in watching him escape custody, then go on the lam while evading every branch of the law. Fortunately, Butler makes an appealing hero once again; there’s also another solid supporting cast that includes the particularly entertaining Nick Nolte (as Butler’s father), Jada Pinkett Smith, Piper Perabo, Tim Blake Nelson and Danny Huston. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) pretty much fuels the plot, with Blanchett playing the Bernadette who disappears ... something quite unusual for her, since she can’t stand even to leave the house. Her school-age daughter (Emma Nelson) spearheads the search for her, and that hunt eventually yields some big surprises as to where Bernadette went and why. The notable cast also includes Billy Crudup, Kristen Wiig, Judy Greer, Troian Bellisario (“Pretty Little Liars”), Laurence Fishburne, Steve Zahn and Megan Mullally. DVD extras: two “making-of” documentaries; photo gallery. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

“MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: SEASON 12 – THE GAUNTLET”

Netflix gave renewed life to the popular premise that sees, to put it charitably, less-than-great movies openly mocked by a silhouetted cast of wiseacres as the pictures unspool. In this latest round, satellite occupant Jonah Heston (played by Jonah Ray) and his robot companions are challenged to sit through six such films in a row ... their snarky remarks getting ever more rapid and intense. Among the attractions this time: “Killer Fish,” with Lee Majors and Karen Black fighting – well, you can guess – and “Mac and Me,” the saga of a youngster (played by Jade Calegory) and the extraterrestrial he discovers. (If that sounds just like another, much more famous movie, it’s not a coincidence.) Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt also appear in the newly produced segments. ››› (Not rated: AS, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

“OFFICIAL SECRETS”

Political espionage fuels this true drama set in 2003, when the question of sanctioning an invasion of Iraq was faced by the United Nations. Keira Knightley plays an expert on British intelligence operations who debates whether to carry out orders to find information with which U.N. Security Council members can be blackmailed unless they approve the invasion. Instead, she endangers herself by deciding to leak the plan to the media, which sparks alarm in both the British and American governments – and leads to her arrest. Ralph Fiennes plays “WHERE’D YOU GO, BERNADETTE” the attorney who represents her in director and co-screenwriter Gavin Hood’s (“Ender’s Game”) cast, which also includes former “Doctor Though she’s renowned for her regal and classic roles, Cate Blanchett Who” Matt Smith, Matthew Goode and Rhys Ifans. ››› (R: AS, P) (Also on gets a contemporary showcase in director Richard Linklater’s (“Boyhood”) take on the best seller by Maria Semple. The title question On Demand)
